GROWS HERE

Jasper County 4-H is on

Dear 4-H Families,

April is both a busy and exciting month as we move our clocks forward and

spring into spring. The garden plants that we started indoors will soon be moved

to the garden, field work will quickly move to a hurried pace, and in no time at all

we will have to mow the grass that is just now becoming a beautiful green.

Green is one of the colors of 4-H, representing life, springtime, and youth. The

other 4-H color is white and represents purity. The 4-H colors and what they stand

for are reminders to all 4-H members of the importance of having the energy and

enthusiasm to dedicate themselves to their clubs and their projects, and to show

honesty and integrity in everything they do.

We can look all around us now, and see the new life of spring. The trees are

budding, birds are singing, wheat fields are a luscious green. The days will soon

be longer, and filled with sunshine. All around us plants and animals awaken with

new life.

We share this feeling of renewed life in springtime as well. Spring brings us a

breath of fresh air, and precious, gentle rain. It stirs within us a feeling of hope, of

new chances, new choices, a new beginning.

Spring gives us a new feeling of youth and energy, like a freshly recharged

battery. For 4-H members this should be a time to direct their energies toward

completing their projects as we look forward to the end of school in a few weeks,

and the start of a new fair season. With so much work soon to be done outside, we

need to make the most of our time, and challenge ourselves to be finishing what

we started. An admirable characteristic of youthful energy is the ability to accept

challenge. As you look forward to the days ahead, challenge yourself to make the

most of your time during this spring season.

The freshness and newness of spring is probably seen most clearly in the purity of

animals that are newly born. These animals are a picture of innocence and purity.

They also demonstrate the same sense of energy and youth that all of us feel at

this time. 4-H members should remember the innocence and purity of newborn

animals as they work together in accomplishing the 4-H tasks they have chosen to

perform this year. Sharing, cooperation, and playing square with others are part of

what 4-H is all about, as in our motto, “Making the Best Better” should be what

we always strive for.

Remember to put some green and white into your life during this spring season.

Have a great April!

Jasper County 4-H Parents’ Association

Parent Association meetings are

open to all. The next meeting TBA at

the extension office. Please call the

office or check the website for the

date. It is important for every club in

the county to have a representative

come to these meetings; that way

your club has input in the County’s

4-H Activities.

JCYF 4-H t-shirt design contest

Due April 22 to the 4-H office.

The 4-H Parents’ Association has had

to make some very tough decisions

regarding trip reimbursements.

The funds that are used to pay for

these trips have dwindled

substantially.

So starting January 1 changes will be

implemented.

As an FYI we receive $500 a month

from the Carthage Area United Way.

The concession stand at the fair

averages between $2,500—$3,000.

These funds are used for trip

reimbursements, year-end awards,

member banquet meals, JCYF award

sponsor, JCYF t-shirts, Weights Work

Wonders project, as well as general

expenses.

EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2019

State and national contests:

The 4-H Parents’ Association will pay

the entry fees for state and national

contest entries, but not expenses

incurred on/for the trip.

Reimbursements for national contest

expenses may be considered on a case-

by-case basis and will be subject to

availability of funds.

Leadership trips:

The 4-H Parents’ Association will

reimburse 50% of trip expenses when

accompanied by receipts. To be eligible

for reimbursement, the member must

turn in at least one end-of-year project

report by 4:30 pm on the due date.

Project specific trips:

Project specific trips will not be funded

by the 4-H Parents’ Association.

Changes Made — Trip Reimbursements

Policies for 4-H organizations Did you know that our 4-H Clover has

the same prestige and protection as the

Presidential Seal or the Olympic

Symbol? All of us care deeply about

4-H programs and young people. As

“keepers of the clover,” we are

responsible for ensuring that all aspects

of the 4-H program are of the highest

quality and in accordance with

approved 4-H policies.

Good financial management is an

important aspect of our responsibility

to 4-H. Since 1998, the required

financial policies for any Missouri 4-H

organization (clubs, county councils,

committees and other groups that use

the 4-H name) have been laid out in

the publication Missouri 4-H

Treasurer’s Record Book Y672.

All entities (clubs, councils,

committees) that use the 4-H name

MUST use this record book and

meet or exceed the policies outlined

in this publication.

Jasper County Youth Fair (JCYF)The fair board meets the first Monday

animals must have a legible scrapie

tag in their ear. Each exhibitor is

allowed to tag up to 5 animals of

IMPORTANT! Please read.

Fair time is quickly approaching.

Remember 4-H members must

have 6 hours of project time to

compete in fairs.

If you are still showing pending in

4-Honline, it means we have not

therefore, you are not an active 4-H

member.

Please contact the office ASAP so

that we can get this resolved.

Clover Kids Corner Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share, and work in groups, explore

their interests, and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity,

information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing

experiences that introduce five to seven-year olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing.

Project volunteers have a lot of responsibilities when it comes to keeping youth engaged and excited about 4-H project work

across the span of several months. Be sure to check out Session 7: Creating a Project Plan resource. This outstanding training

was put together through the national 4-H Military Partnership. Access this and other practical volunteer resources by going to

Thank You Notes Teach a Lifelong Skill

Have you considered helping your Clover Kids write and send handwritten thank you notes? Teaching children to write thank

you notes is a simple act that goes a long way in the development of good social skills. Here are a couple of suggestions to

help you get your Clover Kids going:

• Be positive. Briefly explain that the gift-giver will feel good knowing the present is appreciated. The way you talk about

thank you notes will influence whether your children think of writing them as a chore or as something thoughtful they can do

for someone who has done something thoughtful for them. • Give choices and help make writing thank you notes fun. For

children that don’t yet write encourage them to draw pictures. Provide a variety of interesting and colorful paper, pens/

pencils, crayons/markers, glitter and glue. Let them choose the ones they will use. • Make the handwritten note a special

message from the heart. Help children understand the effort they put into creating a thank you is just as valuable as the gift

itself. • Be a good example and write letters! Children learn to be courteous and responsible by watching other adults.

Ideas for Making Thank You Stationery

• Stamps and pads • Stickers • Decorate plain note cards • Stencils • Use decorative-edged scissors • Cut thank you

postcards from card stock • Make thumbprints with washable ink pads (make balloons, flowers, patterns, people, words, or a

clover

Seed Sprouts: Does Light Make a Difference?

Materials • Sandwich bags • paper towels • navy beans • permanent marker • sprayer or mist bottle with water

Directions Give each child two bags, two paper towels, and six to eight navy beans. Help them label their bags. Label one bag

“with light” and label the other bag “without light.” Fold the paper towels to fit inside each bag. Spray with water until the

paper towels are saturated. Place several seeds in each bag. Seal the bags.

Ask the children to take the bags home; tape one to a window and put the other one in a closet or somewhere with no light.

Keep the paper towels damp. Check on the seeds daily. What happens?

Related activity: Take the children on a walk. Look under rocks or logs for seeds that have sprouted without the help of

sunlight. What do they look like? What do you think will happen if they are kept in the sun?
