Our Faith Journey
As many of you know, I spent a number of years in South Louisiana where Mardi Gras shapes the entire calen-
dar! The revelry of Mardi Gras is something to behold with its colorful characters, exuberant parades, and
unique customs. On Ash Wednesday, the day after the highlight of the Mardi Gras season, the world takes on a
different hue. The colors fade, leaving the somber ashes of Lent as a curtain over everything. It’s not quite
spring, so there are few flowers to brighten the day. Winter is losing its grip. It is truly an in-between time. The
Lenten season is very much a desert experience, one of serious grounding as we contemplate who we are and
whose we are.
On Ash Wednesday, a group gathered in worship to mark the turning of the year and of our lives to a time of
looking inward, to considering our own call as the people of God in this time and place. The central question for
our holy conversation: Why are you here? The answers were as varied as the number of people in Magnolia Hall
that evening. Yet, a theme emerged from all the differences. We are here for something greater than ourselves.
We then offered those hopes to God. When Easter arrives with the hope of resurrection and new life, those an-
swers (which are currently in a jar on my desk!) will reappear as reminders that our Lenten journey is but a mi-
crocosm of our faith journey. When we gave back our dreams to God, each person also took a word, their Len-
ten word. The word each received is a reflection that, for all we question and give, God always has the answer
and all we need for this journey of life.
During Lent, you will notice that worship takes on a more somber tone. There are no ‘Alleluias’, the music is
more intense and contemplative, even the sermon and its text are filled with a greater urgency. At the end of
our Lenten walk is Easter, the hope that all will be well, that God is faithful, that new life awaits. Meanwhile,
while we look to God’s tomorrow, let us embrace this season that is upon us. As a congregation in transition, it
can be challenging and even difficult as what was familiar is shaken and moved around while the future still
seems less than clear. Hold on. Just as God was faithful in bringing those first followers of Jesus to the glorious
wonder of that first Easter morning, God will be faithful as we make our way through these days.
Grace and peace,
Melodie

Glimmers of Holy
How goes your Lenten journey? Did you pick a particular practice to observe this season of faith? For me,
many times, Lent becomes wrapped up in preparation of all the activities that fill the time. I find that my
own personal disciplines get lost in the shuffle of busyness. I even find that my faith falters wondering if
there is a deeper meaning to all this. Lent cautions me to slow down, to let my doubts and questions wan-
der freely, to wait for an awareness of God. In her book Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis (HarperOne, 2012),
Lauren Winner writes:
“Some days I am not sure if my faith is riddled with doubt or whether, graciously, my doubt
is riddled with faith. And yet I continue to live in a world the way a religious person lives in
the world: I keep living in a world that I know to be enchanted, and not left alone. I doubt; I
am uncertain: I am restless, prone to wander. And yet glimmers of holy keep interrupting
my gaze.”
Lent offers us those glimmers of holy. We push the pause button of our living and wait. We listen, we let our
musings free from their bounds; and we trust that God is in those moments that can seem so dark at times.
Wherever you are, take a deep breath. Feel the loving touch of Lent fill you and surround you. Then, open
your eyes to God’s Spirit blowing into our lives. Where are you seeing glimmers of holy in your Lenten walk?

Chuck is an Appleton/Menasha boy… started out in broadcasting at the tender age of 14
at Wisconsin State University River Falls. After graduating from Menasha High School
and a short stint in the Air Force, Chuck returned and started his 50-year career in
broadcasting.
In addition to radio broadcasting, he has
been a TV weatherman in Buffalo, New York, and was a fill-in host
for the AM Buffalo television show. He was the booth announcer
for the Buffalo Sabres TV broadcasts and has hosted top-rated
radio shows in Buffalo, Rochester, San Diego, Washington, DC,
Milwaukee and Portland, Oregon... and was a nominee for Radio
& Records Large Market Personality of the Year!
Now, after retiring from broadcasting, Chuck continues to enter-
tain crowds as an emcee, DJ and Auctioneer; and he still enjoys working with many charities throughout the
area. He also has a DJ service for company parties, weddings, and emceeing.
On a personal note, Chuck and his wife, Barb were married here at First Presbyterian in Oshkosh, have been
together 43 years, are the proud parents of 2, grandparents of 9, great grandparents of 3, and best friends of
three “4-leggers” – Howie, Bella, and Markie … and Rosebud, the Parakeet!

I grew up worshiping at First Presbyterian Church. My parents, Dick and Marti Norton, have worshipped here
since moving to Oshkosh in the late 1960’s. I returned to First Presbyterian Church in 2003. I have been on the
Church Session for four years and served on the Worship Committee and the Nominating Committee. My most
rewarding service to the church was my involvement as Chairman of the Search Committee for our current
Transitional Pastor.
After graduating from Winneconne High School, I attended college at UW Madison. I lived in Madison for 11
years after college and then ended up moving back to Butte des Morts. I missed living on the lake. I now live in
the house next door to my childhood home with my wife Romi and my children Carter and Brinley. I spent
about 10 years rehabbing and adding on to my home. Other than remodeling, my hobbies are boating, water-
skiing, kite surfing and Frisbee in the summer. I serve on the National Ski Patrol in the winter, both at Nordic
Mountain and Big Snow in the U.P. I also enjoy mechanical puzzles and collecting (and drinking) tequila.
I am an avid entrepreneur. I currently run four companies that are
all related to real estate. I have not only purchased 100’s of houses,
but traveled the world teaching others how to invest in real estate.
I am a real estate broker/agent, and I started a non-profit housing
counseling agency to help people avoid the foreclosure of their
home. I am now one of the top promoters of the number one rated
real estate investment education companies in the country. I work
out of my home office and have designed my life to be able to work
when I want and where I want, whether it is on the boat or on the
ski hill. I love helping people solve their real estate and financial
problems. I also am teaching classes at local banks on how home-
owners can pay off their 30-year mortgage in under 10 years on
their current income, without double payments and “Eating rice and beans, beans and rice.” I teach people
how to get out of debt and catch up on their retirement plans.
I love being a part of our church because the people make me feel so welcome.

Join us for worship this week as we journey from the cross to the
empty tomb, from sin to forgiveness, and from death to life.
Holy Week is a special time in the life of the church. Throughout
these days, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the high of
Palm Sunday through the somber moments of Maundy Thursday
and Good Friday. Then, on Easter Sunday, we will rejoice again in the
Resurrection of our Lord. Make plans to be part of each of these spe-
cial opportunities to deepen your faith as we move through this very
holy time.

Oshkosh Chamber Singers to perform Handel’s ‘Messiah’ Sunday, April 14 (Palm Sunday)
3:00 p.m.
Most Blessed Sacrament Parish
605 Merritt Avenue, Oshkosh
George Frideric Handel’s beloved masterpiece “Messiah” will be
performed in its entirety on Palm Sunday, April 14, by the Osh-
kosh Chamber Singers, in partnership with the Oshkosh Sympho-
ny Orchestra.
This will be the first time since 1990 that “Messiah” is performed
in Oshkosh in its entirety.
The Baroque-era oratorio originally was an Easter offering and
was premiered during the Lenten season in 1743. It is written in
three parts: the first prophesizing the birth of Jesus Christ; the
second including the crucifixion and resurrection, honoring his
sacrifice for mankind; and the final section lauding his resurrec-
tion, eternal life, and victory over sin. Included is the well-known
“Hallelujah” chorus.
Messiah has become one of the most enduring choral works of all
time and one of the best-known and most frequently performed
choral works in Western music.
Ticket information is available by calling 920-312-8290 or at
www.OshkoshChamberSingers.org.
