Potentates Message, April 2019
Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Aad Shrine.
I’m excited to come to you this month with the news that I have had the opportunity to
assist in the fezzing of 4 new Nobles during cold sands ceremonies in the first couple of
months of this year. I would like to welcome new Noble Bruce Holm and three members
from the Brainerd area, Noble Brian Hendrickson, Noble Paul Edwards and Noble Paul
Lauer. So, whenever you meet one of these new Nobles, greet them and welcome them
into the Fraternity. Our Imperial Potentate likes to remind us of the 4 “R” s of
membership: Recruitment, Retention, Restoration and Relationships. Relationships being
so very important to the other three “R” s. Let us build a new relationship with these new
Nobles and help them to become active, involved and important members of Aad Shrine.
This past month we hosted the 10th Annual Winter Wine Down. It turned out to be one of the best events we have had.
We were introduced to the local artist Lee Zimmerman, who very graciously gave of his time to do a live painting during
the event. He told of his story as a former Shriner Kid and how the help he received as a young child changed the
course of his life. It was a very moving and wonderful night to have been a part of.
We have a very busy April ahead of us including the Hospital Dads on April 4th. We will have a report from our Board of
Governor’s member Past Potentate Richard Eisenmann about the updates to the Twin Cities Health Care Centers.
We are also preparing for the upcoming Aad Shrine Circus on the 13th and 14th of April. That will include several dates
for advertising the circus and selling tickets at the opening show of Dumbo at the Marcus Duluth Theaters at the DECC
and at Miller Hill Mall. We also have yard signs about the circus available to be placed in front of any of your
businesses or residence.
Then, we will be hosting Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on the 20th of April. This is the first year for this event and we
are hoping for a great morning for the kids.
I would like to thank all the people involved with all the events and programs we have accomplished this year, as well
as those we are currently working to make a success. As a Mason Shriner, I am very proud of the opportunity to be
able to have the friendships and developed the relationships over the 30 plus years. Thank you, Brothers.
Let’s try to follow in our Brother Benjamin Franklins words.
Fraternally Yours,
Kevin J Baker

Oddmen Report:
Winter Wine Down
The 2019 Winter Wine Down is
behind us and it was a fantastic
success! Thank you to
everyone who pitched in and
made the 10th Annual the
biggest and best we have ever had!
The Oddmen would like to thank our vendors:
McKenzie’s Bar and Grill, Kurtz Catering, Famous
Dave’s, Rich’s Fine Cuisine, Lake Superior Catering
(Farley and Carly), Stokke’s Meat Market, and Keyport
Liquor. These businesses donated their time and
materials to our event and without them we could not
have succeeded.
We would also like to thank all the businesses and
individuals who donated items to the silent and live
auctions. The generosity of our community is truly
humbling.
If you missed out this year don’t worry, the Winter Wine
Down will return in 2020 on February 27!
Fraternally,
Nick Katich
Winter Wine Down Committee Chairman
The Burger Nights have grown, and it is time for a change! The Chef’s Unit will now be cooking all the
burger nights and expanding the menu. The Shrine still needs Clubs and Units to host the Burger
Nights. The new duties will include working the room for drawings, fundraisers, fellowship, and
clean-up. Please sign up with the Shrine Office if your Unit or Club is looking to host a Burger Night.
Next Burger Night will be May 23, 2019 from 4 to 7 PM.
(FOR THIS MONTH ONLY, Burger Night will be replaced by the Boat Raffle Fish Fry. See ad on page 5)

The Storage Building is ready to be completed! Last fall, we moved in all the “stuff” that was spread out around Shrinedom. This spring, we need to pull it out, sort it, finish our shelves, stake out territories, build work benches, and get the parade units running. There will also be a couple of work parties coming up as the ground thaws and dries to plant grass, smooth out dirt, and make the place look nice. Watch the Aad News for upcoming work dates or contact Nick Katich at 218-310-7401 or [email protected] with your ideas. Thank you!
Nobles, Ladies, and Friends,
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18th.
Aad Shriners will be tackling our semi-annual highway cleanup
consisting of two miles on Hwy 53 in front of the Temple. We
will be meeting in the garage/parking lot at the Shrine at 9:00 to
start picking up debris and then “socializing” afterwards. Please
contact Nick Katich if you have any questions at 218-310-7401 or
See you here!

FROM THE DESK OF THE RECORDER... Here we are a quarter of the way through 2019 and it seems as though just yesterday we were installing our officers for the year. This month it is definitely time to talk about the summer session for Midwest Shrine Association in Aberdeen, South Dakota. We were very fortunate in getting our rooms at one of the headquarters hotels which is attached directly to the convention center where most of the indoor activities will take place. We need to have your reservations to Yelduz Shrine by June 1. That is the absolute cutoff for rooms and any rooms not spoken for by that time will be released. It will be handled much differently than last year. Get your room requests into the AAD SHRINE OFFICE before June 1. We will make the reservations for you, but you will pay at the hotel with your own credit card when you check in. Remember, the event is earlier than usual. August 1-3, 2019 are the dates. Some of you will want to go out on Wednesday, July 31, and the rooms will be available for you, but please let us know at the office which day you plan to check in and which day you plan to check out of your room. We will need to know if you want a room with a king bed or two queens. The sooner you get your reservation into our office, the more likely you are to get the kind of room you want. If you are part of a unit and your unit is planning to attend as a group, let us know how many and what kind of rooms you need. You will be able to register online and Imperial has gotten very strict about registrations. You must be registered if you plan to be in a parade and your dues must be paid for 2019. There can be no exceptions to this. Be sure your dues card is up to date. Also, proof of insurance coverage must be sent to Yelduz prior to the event. I cannot stress too strongly how important it is to make sure your dues are paid. The monthly payment plan is a great way to go because it brings a steady income to the office over the whole year. Call the office and get it set up. Also, the plan includes your circus tickets so you don't have to pay dues and then pay for circus tickets later. Nobles, it's a great plan. USE IT! We have a wonderful new storage building on our property now. It was long awaited and much needed. Now we need to pay for it. Your Divan is always open to suggestions as to how to increase our income and our raffles have been successful. Also, kudos to Chief of Staff Nick Katich and his committee for the fabulous job they did with making our recent Winter Wine Down the most successful one we've ever hosted. It was easy to see that attendance was great and there was money being spent. Congratulations, Nick and committee, for a job extremely well done. Don’t forget to purchase your Boat Raffle tickets...that drawing is scheduled for April 18 and will be here before you know it. Until next month...
