April, 2017

Note from Rabbi Goldstein,

Dear Members and Friends,

March 15th marked the end of my first five months

here at Temple Emanuel. It has been a busy five

months filled with all of the normal processes of

getting to know one another. From my personal

perspective it has been a rewarding and productive

time, and I look forward to continuing to learn more

about our community and the extended family it encompasses. In the

days ahead we will be celebrating Pesuch together. There are several

adult education courses on the schedule and there will be continued in-

reach and out-reach to the members of our community.

There is a story I want to share with you. I am not sure of the source,

nor can I vouch for it being true, but it contains a powerful message for

all of us. The story goes like this –

His name was Josh. He has wild hair, wears a t-shirt with

holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his

wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant,

kind of profound and very, very, bright. Although born to

Jewish parents, he didn’t really observe Judaism until he

attended college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very

conservative synagogue. They want to develop a relationship

with the students but are not sure how to go about it.

One day Josh decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes,

jeans and his t-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already

started so Josh starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The

synagogue is packed and he can’t find a seat. By now, people

are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says

anything. Josh gets closer and closer and closer to the bima,

and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down

right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the

air is thick. About this time, the Rabbi realizes that from

way at the back of the shul the Rabbi Emeritus is slowly

making his way toward Josh.

Rabbi’s Goldstein’s Letter Continued

Now the elder Rabbi is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair and a three-piece suit. A Godly man,

very elegant, very dignified, very courtly, and he walks with a cane. As he starts walking toward

this young man, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for what he’s going to

do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on

the floor?

It took a long time for the man to reach the boy. The shul is utterly silent except for the clicking of

the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The young

Rabbi can’t even deliver the sermon until the elder Rabbi does what he has to do. And now they see

this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down

next to Josh and worships with him so he won’t be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the young Rabbi gains control, he says, “What I’m about

to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. Be careful how

you live. You may be the only Torah some people will ever read”.

Sincerely,

Rabbi David Goldstein

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:

Dear Congregants,

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather to our start of Spring. This past

Winter season we experienced many beautiful events at the Synagogue including sev-

eral Bat Mitzvahs, our wonderful fundraiser, many holiday celebrations and of course

our Rabbi Goldstein’s Installation Ceremony. We’ve also shared in the memory and

losses of some of our long-time members that were taken from us over the past few

months.

As we look ahead to the calendar, Rabbi Goldstein and the many committees of volun-

teers are working hard to make sure our programming and holiday celebrations are warm and meaningful. In

addition, Rabbi and our Ritual Committee continue to work together with the congregants to provide relevant

and meaningful Shabbat Services. Please continue to check with the weekly message as well as Facebook for

the most up to date happenings at the Shul.

As many of you know, we are currently leasing the education building to The Monarch School. Our

relationship with the school remains strong and all commitments, including financial, by them and us have

been fulfilled and are current as outlined when our partnership began. As a reminder, please be respectful of

their property and the fact that they are leasing the building from us and so access to the property, if nec-

essary, should be requested through our office.

One area of concern that I have received a lot of feedback from our congregants has to do with safety around

the Shul. We have met with both the Lakeland Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department to express

our concerns to them. Both agencies have been overly supportive of assisting us including providing us with

Rhoda Wolf

Temple Emanuel is deeply saddened at the passing on January 11, 2017

of Rhoda Wolf. She was a loving and vibrant component of the essence

and vitality of life at Temple Emanuel for over 50 years. There was not a

facet of the welfare at the synagogue that Rhoda and her beloved

husband, Leonard, did not contribute to. Their continuous outpouring

of energy, expertise, enthusiasm, devotion, and financial support was

unmatched through the years. Rhoda tended to our Temple as she did

to her own lovely roses. She carefully set up the library, with close

attention to detail and precision. She, herself, professionally presided

over the library for many, many years each Sunday morning. She

worked tirelessly at all the bazaars and fund raising, baking, cooking, knitting and serving year

after year. She chaired function after function with great excitement and fun, and always with

great results. She was everyone's favorite. Her warm-hearted personality made everyone feel

wanted, and needed. We were truly blessed that she called Lakeland her home.

May her memory be for a blessing.

Ritual Committee

Friday Night Prayer Book

The Kabbalat Shabbat prayer book we are using has the prayers and readings for Friday night Shabbat services. The right hand page has the Hebrew and a good transliteration, so everyone can follow along with the Hebrew. The book gives choices for most English readings and other readings can be easily added. We are undertaking a 3-month trial and will determine after the trial if we continue using this Friday night prayer book.

Shabbat Morning Torah Reading and Services

The Rabbi and the Ritual Committee have undertaken a 3-month trial of the Triennial Torah Reading.

This means the Shabbat Torah Reading will be shorter (1/3 the length), and it will take three years to

completely read through the entire Torah Scholl instead of the usual one year. (This is what is now

commonly done in the majority of conservative synagogues). The intent is to allot more time for the Rabbi

to discuss the Torah Reading, make it more meaningful and at the same time allow services to end by

noon. It is our hope that the Triennial Torah Reading will result in a consistently greater attendance at

Shabbat services. If it does not, we will revert back to the traditional Annual Torah Reading. With the

new format, the Rabbi is making every effort to end the Shabbat service by noon on Saturday. For this to

occur, we need to have a minyan in attendance by 10: 00 am. If we have to wait for a minyan, this delays

the Torah Service and results in the service ending later.

We encourage everyone to give the Saturday morning services a try. Please be on time so the Torah

service can start timely and enjoy a delicious kiddush lunch and the camaraderie of your fellow Temple

members, friends, and guests following services.

High Holiday Services

The Ritual Committee has begun preparations for the upcoming High Holiday Services.

Selichot

We are planning a special tribute to honor one of our congregants for the many years of contributions, devotion, and hard work given to the Temple. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend on Saturday night, September 16

th. Details to follow.

Kol Nidre

Michael Sedloff did a very meaningful rendition of Kol Nidre at the Selichot concert last year. Several congregants asked that it be repeated during the Kol Nidre prayer this year. The Cantor would chant Kol Nidre twice and we would have the cello rendition for the third. To be sensitive all our congregants we would like your feedback before we decide on the cello.

High Holiday Cantor

We received many compliments and requests to have Rabbi/Cantor Joel Fox come back and assist Rabbi Goldstein with the High Holiday services. Rabbi/Cantor Fox agreed and will serve as our Cantor for the High Holidays. We look forward to having very meaningful and enjoyable High Holiday Services with Rabbi Goldstein and Rabbi/Cantor Fox officiating. Please forward any comments you might have concerning our Shabbat or High Holiday Services to Allen Shane T .

About the Archives Polk County Jewry, Pesach and Births by Cat Eskin

Just a year ago I was preparing for a presentation at the Polk County History Center

in Bartow about the pioneering Jewish families. I was finishing up a period during

which I was privileged to meet and interview a wide variety of Temple Emanuel’s

native-born sons and daughters. As a youngest child, I have always felt important at

Passover - I got to sing the 4 Questions each year - and lucky that I didn’t, as did my

older brother, have to fast!

Regardless of where you land in your family, Passover includes us all, and especially

children. That we retell the story is a very real example of generation to generation. In

celebration of Pesach and spring, I thought I’d share some ephemera from Jewish

births in Polk County during the first half of the 20th century! Enjoy.

The bill from the Lake Wales Hospital for the birth of Celia Friedlander shows off her new baby girl, Edwin Friedlander in July 1931 ($125.10!) Evelyn Friedlander (1924).

in our system. This information is critical to making sure that you re-

ceive the most current information and Temple announcements both

electronically, and in paper form, as quickly as possible.

Please make sure to review each item listed on your profile. It is divided into sections for

each person listed, including children and Yahrzeits. Simply put a line through anything

that is not correct and add the correct information.

We would like to have these forms back not later than May 17th, so we can get the

database updated as quickly as possible. If you have any questions please do not email

the Temple. Please contact Tammy Serebrin.
