Caring for People with Addictions and Mental Health Needs in Ways that Develop Supportive
Relationships and Lead Toward Greater Wholeness…
As we move forward in implementing Advent’s strategic priorities, we will be providing updates from time to time in The Candle as to the work of the various committees that have been formed to help execute our strategic plan. One of those committees which has been meeting regularly is being championed by Karen and Bob Kemery. It is focused on the strategic priority of caring for people with addictions and mental health needs. The committee is exploring opportunities for our congregation to become more engaged in this important matter and to identify where Advent could help make a difference. This includes educating the congregation and community as to the resources that exist in Lake County for helping people get access to the help they may need. On March 4th a speaker from NAMI Lake County spoke to the committee about some resources available to all Lake County residents for gaining access to such care. (NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness). Upon learning of these resources, the committee wanted to share it right away with the congregation - through this article and other venues to come. The first of these is “2-1-1 Lake County”, a free hotline that connects people to social, health and government services. Anyone can dial 2-1-1 to speak confidentially with an information and referral specialist who can help you find answers to a wide range of questions and connect you with area resources that may be able to offer assistance. The service is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one
another, as good stewards of God's
varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10
The Measure of Giving “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.” --I Corinthians 16:2 In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul emphasizes the need to be purposeful in routinely and systematically saving for God’s work. He asks that each one in the church of Corinth set aside a sum of money the first day of the week for later distribution to the church in Jerusalem. By taking this approach (instead of making a massive effort at the last minute), Paul made it easier for the church to achieve its goals. Paul also wanted the church in Corinth to be proactive in their giving. Their earnest desire to contribute to God’s work would be demonstrated by setting aside a sum of money before he arrived…not after. Finally, Paul was giving a personal challenge to each believer. He asked each individual to examine their income and give accordingly. In the same way, Christ challenges us not only to give our money, but also our time and talents. We can examine the gifts God has given us and give back in a purposeful, proactive, and personal way.
SAVE THE DATE! Clean-up Day ▪ May 20th ▪ 8:30am - 'til we finish.
Attention all gardeners, maintenance folks, window washers, cooks and everyone who is willing to come together as a group to give our Church the curb appeal it deserves. We will be pulling out the high bushes in the front of the church, fixing the exterior of the building in preparation for painting (new color scheme to be determined) and putting in new landscaping. I am sure you can tell by now that this will require many hands. As at all Lutheran events, we will feed you well. With our Strategic Plan for our future, we need to anticipate that we will be reaching out to our communities. Let's put on our best face! Sandy Kehler [email protected]

Meals for Project Hope
As part of our long
range planning, Advent is now providing
meals for Families Moving Forward at
Project Hope every Wednesday. These are
single parents with children who are
homeless, or in crisis, and feel hopeless as
well as hungry. Each night approximately
15-20 people including small children stay
at Project Hope where they receive a hot
meal at 5:30pm and are treated with love
and dignity. Won't you help show the love of
Jesus by signing up for a Wednesday? Two
people can sign up to make it easier. There
are no diet restrictions so anything is
acceptable. Meals need to be dropped off
at 25 Freedom Rd, at Door #4 in Painesville
by 5pm. If you are not able to deliver the
meal, please call me at 440-346-3120.
There is a sign up sheet in the narthex.
Thank you for living out our mission:
“Loved by God, we share Christ's
love with all!”
God's peace, Christine Noble

Addiction and Mental Health Focus Group
We will be having the next meeting of the focus group for addiction and mental health on Saturday April 1, 2017 at 4pm. This focus group will meet regularly on the first Saturday of every month. This group’s goal is to find ways to best express our Strategic initiative to provide “Caring for people with addictions and mental health needs in ways that develop supportive relationships and lead toward greater wholeness.” All are welcome to attend and share their ideas as to how Advent can lovingly share Christ’s love with all who are in need of His care. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Bob or Karen Kemery - 440.376.4059 or [email protected].

Points from your Parish Nurse . . . April is National Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month.
As most of you know, my husband Keith has Parkinson's, so this is a topic close to my heart. Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects 1 in 100 people over the age of 60. There is no definitive test or biomarker for Parkinson's, so the rate for misdiagnosis is high. Recent research indicates that at least one million people are living with Parkinson's disease in the United States and 5 million worldwide. Today we understand PD to be a disorder of the central nervous system that results in the loss of cells from certain parts of the brain that produce Dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical messenger responsible for transmitting signals within the brain that allows coordination of movement. Loss of Dopamine causes neurons to fire without control leaving patients unable to direct or control their movements. The exact cause is unknown and there is no cure for Parkinson's disease. That is why research and awareness are so important. Keith has been fortunate in his journey with PD. He was diagnosed in December, 2000 and is still able to drive (although it worries me), and manage most things independently after nearly 17 years. If you know anyone with Parkinson's, please invite them to join the Lake County Parkinson's Support Group which meets at the Mentor Senior Center on the First Tuesday of each month at 4:15pm for an hour. For more information, contact the group leader, Phyllis Hinkel at 440-951-7758. If anyone is interested, the Annual Parkinson Symposium is held every April for the Northeast Ohio Parkinson's Foundation. This year it will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 10am-2:30pm at the Hilton Garden Inn Twinsburg, 8971 Wilcox Dr., Twinsburg. Check in begins at 9am. Topics will be Nutrition and Parkinson's and Developments in PD Management. There is no charge for this event. Door prizes and free lunch are provided. Register by April 14 by calling 1-800-630-3193 or go to http:/ohparkinson.com/events/. This is the 19th year for the symposium and it is a worthwhile event to attend. One last interesting side note-the flower dedicated to Parkinson's is the tulip, so each April I try to have a bouquet of tulips in our home!
Our next Caregivers Support Group will be Thursday, April 20 at 12:30pm-1:30pm at Advent. Please note the date change as the second Thursday is Holy week. If you know anyone who can benefit from this group, please let them know all are welcome.
Blood Pressure screenings will be held on April 22 at 7pm and April 23 at 10am in the Parish Nurse office. As Easter is the third Sunday this month, we will move it to the next week. Hope to see you there.
Next Nursing Home visit will be postponed until May 3 at 2:30pm. Place to be determined as the date approaches.
Since October Advent has been providing weekly meals on Wednesdays for Project Hope's Families Moving Forward. Meals will feed 15-20 persons including children and are delivered to 25 Freedom Rd at Door #4 in Painesville by 5pm each Wednesday. There are no restrictions on the diet. 1 or 2 persons can sign up each week to make it easier. Pizza is always an option if you are unable to cook a meal. A sign up sheet is in the narthex for January and February. Please check your calendars to see if you can help these needy families. If you have questions, or cannot get the meal delivered please call Missy Knight at 440-413-8621 or my cell at 440-346-3120. One of our guiding principles is serving joyfully to continue the work of Jesus. “Loved by God, we share Christ's love with all.”
Next Care Team meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at 9:30am. If you have sent a card, made a phone call, said a prayer, or visited someone, made a meal, then you are part of the Care Team Ministry! Please feel welcomed to join us at any of our quarterly meetings.
As always, "When in doubt, Point to the Cross!"
Your servant in Christ,
Christine Noble

Prayer Chain Do you wish to feel strengthened and fulfilled by offering your time to help others? Nothing could be more gratifying than lifting someone up in prayer in their time of need. The Prayer Chain is an intentional ministry focused through a network of callers/emails. The Advent prayer chain is looking for more people who would like to become part of this powerful ministry. Being a member of the prayer chain, prayer requests are sent to you either by e-mail or via the phone tree, then, we ask you to pray. (caring for people, continued from page 1)
Please note that 2-1-1 is not an emergency line. If you have a situation that requires police, fire or medical assistance for instance, you should call 9-1-1 immediately. The 2-1-1 hotline is a service of Lake County Lifeline, Inc. More information is provided in the promotional card below: The other resource is “The Compass Line”, an initiative of the Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board. The Compass Line was created in 2012 to make it easier for Lake County residents to know where they could go for help – for themselves or their loved ones – if there might be a need for mental health care and/or substance abuse services. The Compass Line is designed to shorten the journey between seeking help and getting help. It’s free, confidential and available Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. More information is provided in the promotional card below: These promotional cards, plus related information about the opportunities and resources available to our congregation and all residents will be available in the Narthex in April. Please share them with your friends, colleagues and family members as you may wish. The committee continues to focus on these and other opportunities for caring for people with addictions and mental health needs. It meets regularly on the first Saturday of every month, from 4:00p.m. to 5:30p.m. All are welcome to attend and share their ideas as to how Advent can lovingly share Christ’s love with all who are in need of His care.
