  • W hen it comes to down to life?s most simple pleasures, most style stalkers would agree that there are few activit ies that can provide more enjoyable gratif ication than the experience of shopping. Were it not the case, the concept of ?retail therapy? would certainly be less popular in our society. However, shopping for clothes only fulf il ls a personal need; it is something we do to otherwise prepare ourselves for our interactions with the rest of the world and often used as a means to boost our own self-confidence. Few can argue with that familiar feeling that occurs when we?ve found the perfect dress or the relief when f inally discovering the appropriate attire for work. Yet it?s ult imately not a feeling that we?ve all shared mutually because not everyone has the luxury of shopping for new clothing whenever mood strikes them. It can be dif f icult to afford the latest styles and trends in clothing (or even clothing at all) when faced with the responsibil ity of having to maintain other f inancial responsibil it ies in a struggling economy. It doesn?t matter if you?re a starving college student or a parent trying to make ends meet, we all

have bills to pay and groceries to buy. Surely that new blouse or pair of shoes can wait until we have some loose change to spare, right? But what if a lack of cash was no longer the problem?

Located at Reclaimed Art Supplies in the heart of downtown Las Vegas, the Open Closet Project provides everyone with the opportunity to give back to the community through a mode that we can all relate to - a need for clothing. Centering purely around trade-based transactions, the OCP offers access to apparel for all sizes and genders, welcoming donations from anyone who is will ing to contribute. This means that visitors can drop by with a bag of their gently used clothing, browse for some prospective pieces to add to their wardrobe, and leave with a bag equally f il led to the brim with new additions of gently used items donated by other people in the community. Money is never exchanged and nothing is ever appraised for an estimated price; this is an organization powered by pure trade, nothing more and nothing less.

If the idea of wearing someone else?s clothes makes you feel a bit apprehensive, rest assured that all of the clothing present at the OCP has been washed carefully prior to placement on the racks. In fact, everything is washed beforehand in a natural detergent and then blessed personally by local Reiki Master Brianna Coleman. This is just one of the aspects that makes shopping at the OCP an experience that is truly unique on its own. The Open Closet Project focuses greatly upon the concept of offering a ?karmic clothing encounter?, enabling members of our community to pay it forward in one of the most simple ways imaginable. Just as positive energy spreads almost effortlessly, I could sense that the donations here really do go towards making a positive impact in more ways than one. What can you expect to f ind at the OCP? Although I was told that the amount of inventory tends to vary throughout the month based upon donations, I would say that there was a fairly reasonable selection of clothing items to choose from, including shoes and accessories.

The racks were full of clothes for men and women alike without any discrimination on style! There were shelves that held a modest amount of shoes, a few hats draped above on nearby furniture, and even a mannequin or two that showcased suggested fashionable combinations. There was a decent range of sizes available among everything and it wasn?t long before I found a cute litt le ensemble to rock out on my own vibe. What I l iked the most about my experience browsing the clothing racks at the OCP was that everything I encountered style-wise was literally unpredictable! There?s no way of knowing what people are going to donate, which means checking in regularly could be beneficial to local fashionistas that are looking for something a litt le vintage or a litt le funky.

Having spent one or two hours shopping around there myself , I can see where the concept behind the OCP is def initely appealing and can ultimately benefit the community. Certainly, it

  • Just as positive energy spreads almost effor tlessly, I could sense that the donations here really do go towards making a positive impact in more ways than one.

would have its appeal for those that are looking to free themselves of clothing that no longer f its or meets their own style standards, but there?s far more value beyond these basic reasons. On a deeper level, I think of how there are people in a variety of demographics that don?t have the luxury of being able to go shopping for clothes whenever they want to because of f inancial restrictions. For these people, having access to new clothes doesn?t matter; just having access to a change in style from what they?ve worn regularly over the past months is a cherished gif t. You

can f ind this exact scenario in the children and teenagers that can?t always get clothes for the new school year or even that one employee at work that wears the same one or two outf its every week. Trade-based transactions like what is presented by the Open Closet Project enable people in these situations to exchange their used clothing for something that is indeed ?gently used? but otherwise ?new? to them. Considering that point, one might also f ind that donating to the OCP would have more appeal than donating to a local thrif t store in

terms of paying it forward to the community. Of course, there is nothing wrong with donating to thrif t stores because they also provide opportunities to people within our community, but keep in mind, donating to the OCP holds two advantages that a thrif t store doesn?t. Thrif t store donations ultimately stil l require monetary transactions, which isn?t always the most convenient option because there are some instances where money can?t be spared at all for the luxury of clothing. Moreover, unless an individual has a huge interest in the typical tax deductions associated with thrif t store donations, there?s not much of a beneficial return on those donations as a whole. As an alternative, those who donate to the Open Closet Project not only have the gratif ication of taking a few items home with them from their visit; they also have that personally rewarding knowledge of knowing they?ve donated to a cause where other people can enjoy and benefit from their items on an equal trade basis, without worry of f inancial l imitation.

Whether you?re seeking to spice up your wardrobe with a few vintage pieces or simply wishing to contribute to the positive vibes in our community, the Open Closet Project is def initely worth checking out next t ime you?re out exploring downtown.

  • Has Florence Become the

    Next Fashion Capital?

    - By Asia T hornton

  • N ewYork,Paris, London and Milan. Since the dawn of t ime in the fashion realm, these four cit ies have been the mecca of all things surrounding groundbreaking, avant-garde fashion for the rest of the world to witness and obsess over. It is in these four cit ies which each house their own week (but we all know to really be month) of showcasing the latest collections from powerhouse designers for the upcoming season. As most would understand, it is evident that in this fast paced industry, above all else, these four cit ies dominate the selling and exposing of collections not otherwise seen by the public eye. Even with the astounding glamour and seniority imposed by the original capitals of the fashion industry, there has now arisen another, which in high speculation, may become a contender in joining the ranks as the f if th off icial fashion capital of the world, Florence, Italy. With all of the recent hype surrounding fashion week season, Suzy Menkes International Vogue editor, has announced that the f irst ever Cond Naste International Luxury Conference is to be held in none other than Florence, Italy. This conference marks the expansion of hard luxury from watches and jewelry to innovative new aged technology and the merging of

all three. More importantly, the goal is to establish a prevalent relevancy in adapting high end designers with electronic devices, appeasing a competit ive and fast-growing market. The event has been announced to commence in April 2015 with many respected delegates on the board including: Karl Lagerfeld, Tory Burch, Roberto Cavalli, Alber Elbaz, Clare Waight Keller, Marigay McKee, president of Saks Fif th Avenue, Antoine Arnault, CEO of Berluti, and David Lauren, executive vice president of the Ralph Lauren Corporation. The Luxury Conference will go to a dif ferent country each year, but when asked why this particular destination was selected to represent the premiere, Menkes made a statement saying it is ?such a great example of past, present, and future. These noble Renaissance buildings we look at were once the avant-garde of architecture. I want our delegates to sit in the Palazzo Vecchio, where we are honored to hold this conference, and ref lect the enduring elements of true luxury? as opposed to the f leeting world of fast fashion.? (style.com) Pitt i Immagine, a series of fashion events held

twice a year in Florence, is also helping to solidify the city?s role as the f if th fashion capital. Raffaello Napoleone, CEO of the company, had a vision of ?how Florence could build a powerful marketing sales business while other capitals were focused entirely on shows.? (style.com) In forging to a dif ferent playing f ield, Napoleone has made strides to ensure that the city is looked at in a serious business light of fashion, not only looked upon for merely displaying garments on a catwalk. He also plans on expanding the cit ies potential by incorporating a broader range of emerging designers from Africa, South Korea, and Turkey. Florence has already birthed many amazing powerhouses such as: Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Ermanno Scervino, and Salvatore Ferragamo, so it is not too crazy of an idea to suggest that this city is, depending on the overall success of the conference, off icially our newest fashion capital addition. • It may stil l be Spring, but Vegas is heating up fast. And just because the air is dry does not mean your skin has to be too! Here are a few tips for healthy skin in these warmer months. 1.) Natural Sunscreen. Brands like Alba, Burt?s Bees, and Jason keep both the sun AND the chemicals out. Pores absorb what you put on your skin, so keeping a bunch of toxins out is a must. 2.) Aloe Vera. For days when you slack on that afore-mentioned sunscreen. Aloe Vera is great in gel form, but if you want to go all-out Whole Foods sells fresh stalks in their produce section 3.) Coconut Oil. Putting coconut oil on like lotion before bed works miracles after a dry, hot day. Plus, it smells l ike you?re in the tropics- doesn?t get better than that! 4.) Papaya, organic blueberries, and lots of water! Papaya and it?s powerful enzymes help make your skin smooth and radiant. And of course, hydration is key. • FFLV: When did you realize you wanted to design? What did you start out making?

I realized I wanted to design in order to make my own costumes. I wanted to stand out with my unique costumes at raves and music festivals. I started to make tutus for friends and embellishing garments for friends. I then realized I would rather make a living doing a craft I enjoyed rather than being miserable at a job I didn't care for.

FFLV: What types of pieces are you making now and what materials do you like to work with?

I am currently working on a collection for fall. The fabrics I l ike to work with are latex, tulle, and chif fon.

FFLV: Where can we see your work?

My work has been photographed by the amazing Tolga Katas. You can see some of my pieces on his website as well as on his social media.

    FFLV: Who are your influences?

My biggest inf luences are Nicola Formechetti, Thierry Mugler, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, and Lady GaGa.

FFLV: Do you have a style icon that your pieces would be perfect for?

I have many style icons. Some include Bjork, Marilyn Manson, Lady GaGa, and many famous drag queens. Ideally my pieces are for bold, daring and rebellious people.

FFLV: I think we could help you out . When can we come over?

Contact: [email protected] from StPeterGore in our upcoming video, stay tuned!

Hoor ay!The rumors are true, a bookstore has sprouted up in DTLV. Writer?s Block, opening just a few months ago, has already won the hearts of the FFLV staff .

We spent the last few weeks scouring the shelves for our favorite books, getting to know the owners Drew and Scott, and petting The Baron, a literary scholar who happens to be a bunny.

For those of you who yearn for the smell of real books, this could very well become your new stomping ground. In fact, if you are really serious, you could move into the Airstream Village across the street for the utmost proximity. What else does one need? I mean? there?s a bunny!

  • From My Blog...Wom en Who Creat e Pow er

Let me sit back and bring you guys a list of women who make being a woman worth celebrating. Yes this list even includes you! We have been powerful and inf luential creatures since the dawn of t ime. I want to celebrate women who are doing more than making words but creating change with actions and words. So ladies, t ime to celebrate us!Nicki Minaj has brought a new sense of what it means to compete in a boys game. Hip Hop has always been a male dominated area where let?s be honest, women don't always last.

This f ireball has not only set the record high for upcoming women but proved she is the best at doing so. The only woman who is breaking records with Beyonce and selling 2 mill ion plus copies in the U.S. and she's also 4x's platinum with her Bang Bang Album. A black female artist or any female artist hasn't hit these records yet besides Queen B! So really men? Is rap just for the guys? Malala Yousafzai has a voice and a will; youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner at the age of

17 and truly magnif icent. In her country they tell girls they're not even allowed to read. She took a stand and was almost assassinated to prove we are freaking equal!

We all know fashion seems so male dominated with designers creating and innovating the new styles for women. But, let?s not forget this woman who brought us the original black dress and freedom from corsets. Thank you Madame Chanel!

Now if that doesn?t create some women power than I don't know what will. Ladies get up and be strong, whether you're a college student, stay at home mom, a business owner or professional, we all have a voice to create power in this world. You can do it! Girl Power and just l ike Nasty Gal former CEO, Sofia Amoruso said ? be a # GIRLBOSS!
