Support Smiles for LifeWhen teeth-whitening

débuted back around 1990, Itried it out on friends, family, and team members (shucks, most of mi famiglia had alreadysurvived my early clinical foraysin dental school.)

And yeah, at first, I thoughtteeth-whitening was pretty su-perficial stuff. But before long, Ichanged my mind. Teeth-whit-ening really worked and it wassafe.

I had no idea where whiter, brighter smiles would lead. Butbecause of teeth-whitening, wedetected oral pre-cancers, diag-nosed periodontal disease, andscreened for hypertension.

Patients reconnected withoral health; we even saved a fewlives. But we were clueless abouthow many lives we could reallytouch.

This year is the 17th year ofSmiles for Life (SFL). And since1998, participating practiceshave raised more than $35 mil-lion.

SFL began March 1 and con-tinues through June. With thesupport of Crown Council andUltradent Products, we’ll indeedbe providing teeth-whitening for

patients at reduced fees with allthe proceeds going to helpingsick, disabled, and disadvan-taged children.

This year, half of the fundswill again be distributedthrough the Crown Council tocharitable organizations like St.Jude Children’s Research Hospi-tal and Kids Cancer Care Foun-dation. The other half of theproceeds will go to an organiza-tion chosen by the participatingdental practice.

This year, we’ll be looking tocreate whiter, brighter, flashiersmiles while, for the third year,we raise funds for our own lo-cal/national/global treasure,City of Hope.

During the past three years, cancer and diabetes claimed thelaughter, spirit, and love of toomany of our amazing TempleCity Dental Care friends andfamily. And we do hold a grudge.

Please join us in holding can-cer accountable.

By William A. Cohen, Ph.DAre you the “nice guy,” the

“shrewd guy,” or “that guy” inyour daily leadership practice? Here are eight researched tactics present this analysis?

The shrewd guy moves:Repudiating: Declaring your

ignorance. Jim, I’m just horriblewith numbers, and you’re awhiz. I think that you may be theonly person here who can dothis.

Indirecting: Getting Jim todo something without asking forit directly. If Jim is responsiblefor the financial analysis buthasn’t started, start working onit yourself, but let him notice.

Redirecting: Giving the issuea different focus. Jim, if I can getyou to do this financial analysisit will help me to convince theboard to give you the promotionI told you about last month.

that are useable in different cir-cumstances. If one doesn’t work, try another. In this hypotheticalscenario, you are trying to getJim, your direct employee, to complete an important financial

analysis by the end of today. The nice guy moves:

Enlisting: Just asking. Jim, Ineed your help. Can you do thisfinancial analysis?

Persuading: Asking and ex-plaining why. Jim, our board isexpecting a full review this Fri-day, and this analysis will be acentral piece of it. Can you dothe financial analysis?

Negotiating: Compromising.Jim, if you can do the financialanalysis, I’ll get someone else todo the marketing analysis that Iassigned you.

Involving: Getting Jim in-volved. Jim, what are yourthoughts about how we can best

The that guy move:Directing. Jim, do the finan-

cial analysis. This certainly won’tengender Jim’s devotion to you. However, if time is short and youhave the authority, it may be themost effective tactic in your lead-ership arsenal. Be careful toweigh the long-term conse-quences.

Hello Emmy: I overlooked a1099-MISC form and inadvert-ently left off some freelance in-come earned in 2013. Should Ireport it on this year’s tax re-turn and what penalties can Iexpect?

Answer: If this income wasearned in 2013, it should notbe reported for a different, andincorrect, tax year. 1099 formsthat you receive are also re-ported to the IRS, so the gov-ernment knows about yourtrue income. Filing an amend-ed 2013 tax return using form1040X would be more appro-priate.

Amended returns aren’tmandatory when you discoveran error after the fact. The IRShas three years to send you abill for the discrepancy.

However, knowingly sub-mitting an inaccurate tax re-turn is a punishable offenseand (dis)proving your com-plicity can be difficult. Filing anamended return before the IRSrecognizes the discrepancy isbest.

When amending a tax re-turn, don’t redo the entire re-turn, unless your schedule at-tachments change. Just updateany changed figures resultingfrom the additional income. Besure to include the 1099-MISC

with the amended return andinclude a payment for any taxyou may owe.

If you earned $400 or morefrom self-employment during2013, you also need to updateor file Form 1040SE, which listsyour income subject to self-em-ployment tax. Also, be sure toreevaluate your state tax return.

Generally, the IRS imposesa late payment penalty of 0.5percent per month that taxes

remain unpaid. This penalty iscapped at 25 percent, except foran error greater than $5,000 or10 percent of your annual in-come. This may trigger evenlarger penalties.

Oak Ave. Intermediate School seeksdonations for Character Garden

Oak Avenue Intermediate School’s newest vision is to create aCharacter Garden where students are surrounded by messages fo-cusing on character and staff have a unique environment to teachlessons that reinforce Oak’s six character traits: respect, responsi-bility, integrity, compassion, perseverance, and honesty.

Oak’s Character Garden will pay tribute to three exceptional Oakemployees who over recent years lost their battles with cancer: OfeliaArroyo, Bill Schmidt, and Donna Wherry. Students will be inspiredby the lives of these amazing individuals.
