This month, Mark S. Ramsey, a registered professional engineer, author, researcher and founding member of the Technical Advisory Board of Cabot Specialty Fluids, will discuss Onsite Continuous Hydraulic Optimization (OCHO).

Ramsey has more than 25 years of multi-disciplined research and drilling operations engineering experience and has chaired technical sessions for the SPE, IADC and OTC. He has served on the SPE drilling editorial review committee, the Drilling Technical Advisory Group of the Gas Research Institute and represents clients at meetings of the DEA and the DEA-Europe. He also chaired the Horizontal and Directional Drilling subcommittee of the AADE in Houston. He was an invited guest speaker of the Japan National Oil

Corporation at their International Symposium on Horizontal Drilling.

Ramsey was named a Charter Member of the Texas Tech Academy of Mechanical Engineers for his outstanding contributions to the profession and earned the Distinguished Instructor Award from Exxon. He also assisted Amoco in developing its successful Training to Reduce Unscheduled Events and spin-off workshops now being conducted worldwide. His Value Improvement Planning (VIP) workshops have saved drilling and completion operations millions of dollars in costs.

Known as an innovator, Ramsey holds more than 30 U.S. and international patents and has authored several papers, trade journal articles and formerly the monthly Imagineering column for The Brief. Ramsey investigated intelligent completion technologies for GPRI and BP; was selected by Schlumberger to author the drilling module of its online Oilfield Glossary; and he created Amoco's first internal website for drillers.

He holds a BSME from Texas Tech University.

This month's featured speaker will be Mark S. Ramsey, a registered professional engineer, author, researcher and

founding member of the Technical Advisory Board of Cabot Specialty Fluids, who will discuss how to optimize your wellbore

hydraulics for improved efficiency and cleaning in eight easy steps at 11:30 a.m. April 15 at the Petroleum Club in Lafayette.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS TODAYAADE members and their guests with reservations are $20, and walk-ins will be $25. Sign up to attend online by clicking the 123SIGNUP link at

www.aade.org, emailing [email protected],or calling 337-237-4406 by noon Friday, April 12.

Nomination ballots will be available at the April General Meeting for the 2013-2014 election year. Board positions

available for nominees are President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

Voting for nominated candidates will be held at the May 20th General Meeting.

At the March General Meeting, speakers William "Bill" Koederitz and Kirt McKenna of NOV discussed real-time optimization through the use of automated drilling technology. Here, the

speakers pose with AADE Lafayette Chapter President Derrick Daigle.

Real-time Optimization Discussed

Uno, Dos, Tres ... Ocho! Onsite Continuous Hydraulic Optimization is a proven field technique that allows you to optimize your wellbore hydraulics for improved efficiency and cleaning in eight easy steps. Ramsey will describe how clever use of wellbore and surface data can improve drilling efficiencies.

Many techniques exist to pre-plan the best use of available hydraulic energy on a particular rig. Often when these pre-planning tools are used, optimum hydraulics are not achieved due to a variety of factors.

With today’s mud systems and bit technology, a significantly different hydraulics regime may exist at the end of the bit run compared to the conditions existing at the beginning of the bit run. A straightforward and accurate predictive technique will be presented which modifies the exponent factor commonly used in hydraulic software programs. This modification accounts for longer bit runs and anticipated fluid property changes.

In addition to compensating for the exponent factor, Ramsey will discuss ways to account for limitations such as control drilling, mud motors, directional drilling, MWD/LWD and hole cleaning considerations.

Come and be our guest at this month’s meeting.

The Lafayette Chapter AADE has been hosting our scholarship sporting clays tournament for Twenty years. The “fund raising” event has grown considerably over the years as well as the proceeds it generates for petroleum industry scholarships. This year’s tournament was no exception.

This year’s event was held at Cajun Elite Shooting Complex in Jennings, LA on March 22nd & 23rd. Beautiful spring weather prevailed on both days. The course was challenging, however the majority of the competitors had scores above the 50% mark. Safety was a priority and on the forefront of everyone’s thoughts throughout the entire event. There were no incidences.

Fifteen food sponsors provided an array of foodstuff over the two day event from fried fish, pork chop sandwiches, ribs and chicken to mention only a few of the many delectable dishes. In addition to the food sponsors, there was an additional 90 sponsors that provided tents, shooting station representation, door prizes, fun shooting events and many other bits and pieces that made up the tournament. There were also scores of

volunteers from service companies and committee members that donated their valuable time to help make the event a success. Without these countless sponsors and volunteers and committee members, the event would not have been possible. Although there are too many sponsors to list here, I would like to give special thanks to our Platinum sponsors; Baker Hughes, Knight, NOV FluidControl and Martin Energy Services.

As in the past, proceeds from this event will help fund oil industry scholarships at ULL, Nicholls and LSU. Everyone who participated in the event from sponsors to the shooters played a large part in helping the AADE accomplish our mission.

The Lafayette Chapter AADE Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament is a premiere event in the oil & gas industry. We look forward to next year’s event and invite those who could not be with us this year to join us for next year’s tournament. The scores and winners for this year’s event are posted on the AADE website at www.aade.org/chapters/lafayette.

The AADE Lafayette Chapter will begin accepting technology features submitted by AADE Lafayette Chapter members to appear in an upcoming issue of the Lafayette Driller newsletter.

Submissions should focus on new technology being used in today's oil and gas operations and include a write-up ready to publish that clearly explains the technology and how it is being used in 350 words or less.

A high-resolution image showcasing the technology or tool may accompany a submission for consideration. Submissions should

focus on technology, tools and applications, not sales.

A URL may be included if additional information is offered, but phone numbers and email addresses will not be printed.

Submissions will be reviewed by board and committee members to ensure content is appropriate and accurate.

Please email your submissions to [email protected].

Thank you in advance for participating in this effort to help educate our members on the latest technology at work in our industry.

SUBMIT YOUR TECHNOLOGY TO APPEAR IN THE LAFAYETTE DRILLER

2013 LAFAYETTE OIL DIRECTORY

Directory now includes nine* (9) Parishes:
