Dear Readers,

I would like to take this time to thank all of you from

my heart. Your devoted readership each month has assured me that the information we provide every month is valued and appreciated by you the reader. You have done the same for our advertisers as well, as you utilize Healthy Beginnings as a resource to build their businesses.

Ffjorren asked me to write this month’s “editor letter” as she is burning the candles at both ends these last months, while she edits by day and by night, and directs the community theatre play “The Wizard of Oz” in Tracy, California.

April’s lineup of articles brings not only new thoughts regarding health issues, yet also insightful messages to ponder in healing heartfelt relationships. After reading Andy Drymalski’s article on “Love Mockery,” I went inside myself and asked, “who pays me false admiration?” Sometimes it is people that are close to me; sometimes it is the government. I have never appreciated institutions that tell me how to think and what to think. I believe in accountability, I do not believe in the blame game.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine’s core mission is based on one simple element. Our mission is to present unbiased articles on the topics of health. The topic of health encompasses the whole person, body, mind and spirit. Our goal is to present the information; you the reader can discern for yourself what may or may not be a benefit to you and your life’s journey.

Please enjoy the articles we have for you this month. Let us know your thoughts; we want to know what you think.

Best in Health and Happiness,

Dawn Gowery

PUBLISHER’SLETTER

“The tree has meant many things to many people throughout history, but the theme that runs through them all is humanity’s psycho-spiritual journey from ignorance to consciousness. With roots that reach deep into the earth, arms that reach up to heaven, and trunks that connect the space in between, trees mediate between heaven and earth, thus symbolizing the soul’s journey through the manifest world in both its sacred and mundane aspects.”

-Jean Raffa

When I think of trees, I smile and say Thank you. Trees are the lungs of our planet; they provide shelter for so many wonderful creatures like birds, bugs, squirrels, bunnies, humans and more. They provide us with wood to build our homes, shade to keep us cool and shelter belts to corral the wind. From a growth and spiritual point of view, I have always lived my life like a tree. A tree continues to grow until it dies, it does not say “I was 25…and now I am 55 and I know everything I need to know, so I’ll quit growing.” No a tree continues to grow, no matter the situation; be it adversity or calm, a tree keeps growing. How majestic and noble, the tree.

There’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a

sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

and/or nuts) that contains parent omega-6 and omega-3 PEO’s and few, if any, omega derivatives.

One other thing to clear up is that many physicians and nutritionists claim that supplementing any omega-6 is bad because it will cause an increase in inflammation. Understanding the real biochemistry proves this to be wrong. The function of omega-6 derived prostaglandins (such as arachadonic acid) is to prevent, not cause, inflammation unless it is required by the body to seal a wound. In fact, some of the prostaglandins, and other derivatives of the parent omega-6’s called eicosanoids, are known from medical textbooks to have fast-acting anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing properties.

So what’s a person to do? The simple answer is to take a teaspoon of organic hemp oil morning and evening. Another way to arrive at the ideal 6/3 ratio is a mixture of 1/3 walnut, 1/3 sunflower, and 1/3 flax oil at the same dosage. There is also a formula available online at www.yessupplements.com.

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

The term “Parent Essential Oils” (PEO’s) refers to the only two true essential fatty acids: parent omega-6 (LA) and parent omega-3 (ALA). The term “parent” is used because these are the whole, unadulterated form of the only two essential fats your body demands, as they occur in nature. Once PEO’s are consumed, your body changes a small percentage of them –about five percent--into other biochemicals called “derivatives,” while leaving the remaining 95 percent in parent form.

Fish oils are made up almost exclusively of omega-3 derivatives (EPA & DHA). To be clear, your body doesn’t need or want these derivatives, because it makes its own derivatives out of the PEO’s you consume, as it needs them. Taking too much fish oil (or other derivatives) can be very harmful.

Fish oil recommendations are worthless, or even hazardous to your health! Studies have shown that omega-3 derivatives, taken in the doses often recommended by physicians and nutritionists, in particular from fish oil, will significantly decrease a wide range of immune cell responses. Other studies have shown that fish oil is worthless for helping prevent coronary atherosclerosis as well as arterial inflammation.

If the above information wasn’t shocking enough, there is more bad news regarding fish oil supplements. A 1989 study showed that administration of it to people with diabetes caused a worsening of their blood sugar control. Experiments performed between 1988 and 1992 conclusively showed abnormalities in brain tissue resulting from administration of fish oil.

So what is the right thing to take? The latest recommendation is to take a plant-based omega formulation (from various seeds

The subject of why or whether to grow industrial hemp in the United States is often debated yet much misunderstood. The controversy surrounding the plant obscures much of its historical and potential impact — and its adaptability to diverse industries.

It never used to be that way. From the first plantings in Jamestown, when it was illegal not to grow hemp, to our Founding Fathers’ hemp plantations, to the hemp sails and rigging of the clipper ships that sailed the 19th century seas, to the hemp canvas-covered wagons of the pioneers headed west, to the sturdy hemp Levi’s pants of the original 49ers seeking their fortunes in the California hills, to the massive “Hemp for Victory” government program of WWII, hemp has

developed a long and illustrious history in America. In fact, hemp has been used extensively for millennia in cultures around the world and belongs to humanity’s common agricultural and commercial heritage.

The seed was known for its healthy protein and rich oil. The outer bast fiber from the stalk was used for clothing, canvas and rope. The useful inner core fiber (or hurds) was used for construction and paper production. In fact, the Declaration of Independence was drafted on hemp paper, and the finest Bible paper remains hemp-based even today. In the early 20th century, some researchers were beginning to look at using the cellulose from hemp as an affordable and renewable raw material for plastics. Henry Ford actually built a prototype car made out of agricultural fiber bio-composites, including hemp.

Why Industrial Hemp?Written by David Bronner

Hemp-- Controversy and Comeback Despite large renewed domestic production during WWII, hemp’s cultivation and use in the U.S. was essentially discontinued in the mid-20th century. This was largely due to missing-formed and misguided fears that industrial hemp is marijuana, and hemp became demonized during the “reefer madness” craze that swept the country over much of the last century. Despite easily discernible and widely accepted differences between the two distinct plant varieties, serious misconceptions continue to persist to this day.

Industrial Hemp Defined Industrial hemp varieties of the Cannabis plant, also referred to as “fiber” or “low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)” hemp, should not be confused with psycho-active “marijuana” varieties of the plant. In fact, they are quite distinct varieties or breeds of the same plant species, much like a St. Bernard and a Chihuahua are very different varieties of the same canine species. It is not possible to get “high” from hemp.

The majority of Western countries recognizes this distinction by differentiating Cannabis based primarily on THC content and permits the farming of low-THC hemp varieties for fiber and seed. This distinction is formally affirmed in Article 28(2) of the 1961 United Nations’ Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, to which the U.S. is a signatory party. The Article reads: “This Convention shall not apply to the cultivation of the Cannabis plant exclusively for industrial purposes (fiber and seed) or horticultural purposes.”

Hemp has a well-established meaning in the international community, referring to non-psychoactive Cannabis varieties. Regulations in the European Union and Canada conservatively mandate less than 0.2% and 0.3% THC in the flowers, respectively. In contrast, marijuana varieties generally contain between 3% and 15% THC in their flowers. Because of their minimal THC content, flowers and leaves from hemp have absolutely no value as a psychoactive recreational drug.

In spite of this, the DEA continues to intentionally confound non-psychoactive hemp varieties of Cannabis with psychoactive marijuana varieties. The U.S. is the only major industrialized nation in the world to prohibit the growing and processing of hemp. However, non-viable hemp seed, oil and fiber are all currently legal for import and trade in the U.S., and domestic industry has continued to import them for diverse uses every year since the Marijuana Tax Act, effectively making marijuana illegal, was passed by Congress in 1937. Industry estimates put the total North American retail market for hemp products at approximately $450 million in 2012.

to dismantle Cannabis prohibition generally and directing their state legislatures to enact industrial hemp farming programs in particular. They join other states such as North Dakota that are ready and willing to cultivate industrial hemp as soon as the federal government gets out of the way. Fortunately, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) are currently spear-heading efforts in the Senate to do just that: direct the Department of Justice to allow states the choice to regulate industrial hemp with-out federal interference.

Moreover, due to the strong ethical consumer base that drives the U.S. hemp market, the development of that market is poised to spur pioneering domestic fair trade certification in the U.S., just as it has been doing in Canada via the leadership of the Farmer Direct Co-operative (which supplies Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps with hemp seed oil for various products).

For more information and resources visit Votehemp.com and hemphistoryweek.com

This is not the case for our “neighbors to the north,” however. For the past fifteen years, Canadians have shown that they can distinguish the difference between hemp and marijuana in their farming communities.

Common sense, thankfully, has an ability to shine through even the cloudiest situations. Environmental and economic interests are beginning to cut through the U.S. policy murk, and support for hemp is forming into a broad political base, including:

• Farmers: hemp can help farmers looking to diversify their farm operations. Hemp fits well into increasingly popular organic, low-input and sustainable methods of agriculture.

• Reform-Minded Businesses: hemp’s valuable fiber and significant biomass productivity can help companies “go green” by creating a wide variety of opportunities and supplementing or replacing more commonly used, problematic and stressed-out raw material sources.

• Nutritionists and Health Food Advocates: hemp’s oil-rich seed has an exceptionally high content of vital essential fatty acids (or EFAs, Omega-3 and Omega-6) that nutritionists have found to be commonly deficient in our diet. A diet rich in EFAs can help alleviate and prevent many common ailments. For similar reasons, hemp oil is increasingly employed in the natural body care industry as well.

Hemp, of course, is not in itself a total panacea for the social, economic and environmental woes that plague our planet today. Indeed, no single crop can be. But, with focused and sustained research and development in both the public and private sectors, hemp and other qualified annual crops are poised to spur dramatic — and certainly vital — change. These renewable resources will transition our major industries from depending on non-renewable, fast-disappearing resource bases to being driven and supported on a sustainable economic basis by the annual agri-industrial produce of the Earth’s fertile fields.

With thirty-one other nations growing industrial hemp and the U.S. representing the largest consumer and industrial market for their hemp products, we are poised to take advantage of an unprecedented opportunity. Americans are becoming more aware each day of the significant possibilities and benefits that hemp presents.

We are in the midst of a sea change on Cannabis policy in America, with both Washington and Colorado recently voting

Approximately one half of peripheral neuropathy patients (people with pain and/or numbness in hands or feet) have diabetes as the cause of their condition.Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

Syndrome” where their body mass index is elevated; they may have hypertension, unwanted belly fat in males and fat around the pelvis in females, and high cholesterol.

If this process is not halted, over time the pancreas is not able to produce the amount of insulin it once was able to, and therefore when we eat the bagel, we cannot produce enough insulin to coral the glucose. This is diabetes. Now, because there are excess amounts of blood sugar, more extensive damage occurs to the peripheral nerves (think feet and hands), kidneys and retina.

Early in this sequence of events, mentioned above as pre-diabetes, the mildly elevated blood sugar levels will draw fluid into namely the small fiber neurons (nerve cells) which are uncovered or poorly protected. These nerve fibers experience pain, temperature sensation, and carry information regarding how large or small the blood vessels should be. This fluid accumulation will be greatest at night when the person is not on their feet, and the nerves will swell due to the high glucose levels, causing pain and or burning sensations. If the person’s examination findings are consistent with changes primarily in pain and temperature sensation, this is termed a small fiber peripheral neuropathy, and out of all the categories of polyneuropathy, this can be one of the most miserable to suffer with. If this process occurs for long enough, the high blood sugar levels will ultimately result in all nerve fiber types being involved. This can result in tingling, numbness, or burning pain.

Patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes who work on peripheral neuropathy not only see improvements in sensation in their feet, but often times, their symptoms are changing. More importantly, they are getting their blood sugar under control through diet and at times supplementation. In essence, they are forming habits to be far healthier for the rest of their lives.

The first step with any patient who is pre-diabetic or diabetic is to work on their diet. However, many patients are resistant to this as it takes incredible discipline, work and diligence. When someone does not want to change their diet, then of course their Medical Doctor will have to put them onto a medication or multiple medications to corral the issue, which will still not solve the problem.

In addition, for the 25-33 percent of peripheral neuropathy patient’s who do not have a known cause of their symptoms, pre-diabetes accounts for upwards of 40 percent of these cases. The bottom line is that patient’s with peripheral neuropathy need to be screened for diabetes as well as pre-diabetes.

Diabetes is classically defined as having blood glucose above 125 milligrams per deciliter on three separate occasions, and an HbA1C above 6.4-6.7 percent. HbA1c is a marker used to see how high the person’s blood sugar has been over the last three months. It in essence tracks how much sugar is attached to a red blood cell, and because a red blood cell lives for three months, this allows us to see what the blood sugar has been over the last few months. Pre- diabetes is defined as the individuals fasting glucose being between 100 to 125 mg/dL, and HbA1c above six percent, and an oral glucose tolerance test above 140 mg/dL after two hours. So what does all of this mean?

Diabetes and pre-diabetes are issues of blood sugar regulation. When we eat carbohydrates, a bagel for example, those carbohydrates are broken down into their individual building blocks, termed glucose. Glucose then enters from the gastrointestinal tract, into the blood stream. The pancreas is situated anatomically such that it is one of the first organs to be exposed to the blood coming from the gastrointestinal tract, giving it the opportunity to sample the quantity of sugar in the blood. Normally, as glucose levels rise in the blood stream, insulin is produced by the pancreas, in order for glucose to enter most cells of the body, such as muscle tissue. Glucose once in the cell, provides the basic foundation for the cell to make energy.

Unfortunately, in pre-diabetes and diabetes, there is a trend towards the pancreas not being able to make enough insulin to coral the glucose coming into the blood stream from our diet. In pre-diabetes, the process starts as our cells become less responsive to insulin. As a result, if we eat that same bagel, we have to secrete more insulin to get the same amount of sugar into the cells. During this process, a point is reached where not enough insulin can be produced on all occasions, such that blood sugar may rise above what it should be after we eat. These elevated sugar levels can then draw water into the cells of our nerves, especially in our feet, the cells of our kidney’s and into our retina. Patients with pre-diabetes often have what is termed “Metabolic

Water--it’s what makes life possible on planet earth. It nurtures life by surrounding and protecting the human infant (90 percent water) in the womb with amniotic fluid (water based). It is the same way with the baby’s brain (80 percent+ water) being surrounded and protected by cerebral fluid (water based). It is this water cushion between the brain and skull that protects the brain from being damaged by slamming against the skull bone due to falling or contact sports. If there is insufficient fluid, brain damage can result.

Like water, the brain is absolutely necessary for human life and function. It’s the body’s control center because every cell is stimulated and directed by the brain. The brain communicates within itself and with the rest of the body via electrical impulses conducted through water. It’s no wonder the brain can’t do its job properly when it doesn’t have enough water.

When dehydrated, the human body has a water-rationing priority system, with the brain being first and most important, followed by the lungs, liver, kidneys and glands. By the time the brain registers water deprivation, the rest of the body is already in trouble because there isn’t enough water elsewhere to draw from for the brain.

The brain can register its thirst by creating headaches. Pain is the body’s distress signal so we will do something about it. We tend to view pain as something to get rid of with painkillers, which only mask the reason the pain exists. By taking a painkiller, we are telling the brain to shut up and quit bothering us with something inconsequential as water.

Beginning dehydration signs are dry or sticky mouth, decreased urine output, no eye tears and lethargy. But with continued water deprivation, the brain will decline in function and demonstrate other symptoms. Then one may experience lack of balance, problems with coordination, slurred speech, or muscle weakness

because brain signals cannot reach the intended muscles. One may even develop a soft spot on the top of the head like an infant. Ultimately brain dehydration changes its cell structure which leads to cell deterioration and even death.

Using MRI, scientists at the English Centre for Neuroimaging Science gauged dehydration effects on ten healthy adolescents before and after exercising. First, subjects were given a series of problem solving and reaction time tests. Then they exercised on bicycles for 90 minutes wearing impermeable plastic clothing to increase sweating and water loss. When dehydrated, their brains had to work harder to carry out the same tasks. Their MRI’s showed increased neural effort in key parts of the brain used in problem solving and learning. The participants exerted a higher level of brain activity in order to achieve the same performance level, suggesting that reduced water may adversely impact executive functions such as planning and visual-spatial processing.

Continued brain dehydration results in memory problems and confusion, leading some medical researchers to conclude that Alzheimer’s disease is simply the result of chronic brain dehydration. A seriously dehydrated person lost in the desert may eat sand believing it is water. This is the same loss of brain function that causes an Alzheimer’s patient not to recognize a spouse, child or friend. Since so little research is done on brain dehydration, one can only speculate that perhaps it can also result in any of the other mental disorders such as ADD, autism, schizophrenia, depression, aggression and violence.

For some, only a two percent drop in hydration will make short term memory so fuzzy that they will be unable to remember friends’ names, have trouble doing basic math, and forget where the car keys are. Since 75 percent or more Americans are chronically dehydrated, it’s no wonder people think they are losing their minds.

ADD and HeadachesHomeopathic Medical Doctor Corazon Ibarra counsels each new patient to begin hydrating because she believes body drought is an integral part of all the tough cases she works with.

One patient was a nine year old boy with Attention Deficit Disorder. He had already been asked to leave two private Reno schools and was about to be kicked out of a third when his desperate mother brought him to Dr. Ibarra. She asked the mother to write a list of ten liquids her son drank regularly. Of the ten liquids, none was water.

Dr. Ibarra believes no other liquid can take the place of water in the healing process. After only three weeks of proper water and electrolytes, the boy’s attention span was so extended that his grades were already improving.

A Mid-East Veteran presented with unbearable migrane headaches. Serving in a dehydrating environment with life-threatening stress had taken a toll on the man’s brain. After three weeks on Dr. Ibarra’s re-hydration program, the soldier’s migraines were completely gone because his brain cells once more contained around 85 percent water. “Headaches of all kinds are signs the brain or body is low on water,” she says.

Dr. Ibarra believes water is the sine qua non for health.

Hypnobirthing is both a philosophy and a technique, built on the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, English Obstetrician and author of “Childbirth without Fear.” Dick-Read was an advocate for natural birth at a time when more and more births were taking place with the aid of sedating drugs. The hypnobirthing method helps women discover that in the absence of fear and tension, as long as there is not some other special medical circumstance, labor can take place without severe pain.

The muscles responsible for birth are designed to work in perfect harmony, and are able to do so more easily when the body is relaxed. When the body is being flooded with fear and stress, this process becomes uncomfortable and difficult. The physiological effects of fear manifest in the automatic nervous system (ANS) and its two subsidiary systems: the sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic system is triggered by

If you’ve watched pretty much any movie or TV show that includes a child birth scene, it would be easy to walk away with the impression that giving birth is one of the most excruciating, torturous, painful experiences that a woman will ever go through. Whole generations of women have been imprinted with this expectation that giving birth equals extreme suffering. But, are these stereotypes of birth actually true?

Thankfully, many doctors, midwives and childbirth educators have come to realize that childbirth does not need to be a fearsome experience. The solution is not drugs that block the sensation of pain, but rather, understanding how fear and tension affect how a woman experiences labor and birth. Hypnobirthing is one example of many emerging approaches to achieving a gentler, more peaceful birth.

Hypnobirthing

stress and fear. It is designed to prepare the body for dangerous situation, so the body will respond with a “fight,” “flight,” or “freeze” response. When this happens, blood is directed away from the uterus since the body does not recognize it as necessary for survival in an extreme situation. The birthing muscles tense and tighten, and contractions are perceived as being more painful. The parasympathetic system on the other hand, is designed to keep the body in a state of well being, and slows the firing of harmful neuropeptides.

Midwife, Ina May Gaskin has also observed the affects that emotions can have on birth, in her landmark book, “Spiritual Midwifery,” she explains, “There is a sound physiological explanation for why some women experience more pain in labor than others. A woman who is the center of positive attention, feeling grateful, amused, loved and appreciated has a higher level of the class of neurohormones called endorphins. Endorphins actually block the perception of pain. On the other hand, there are also adrenalin like substances which may be secreted by the body during labor, especially when the woman is afraid, cold, angry, humiliated or experiencing any other disagreeable emotion. Adrenalin is part of the body’s protective mechanism when it is presented with danger; the heart rate quickens, the muscles tense, labor contractions may be inhibited, and the perception of pain is intensified.”

By using visualization, deep breathing, conscious relaxation, and deepening of focus, women are able to go through labor without fear, and thus, less pain; and in some cases, no pain at all. It is not so much that hypnobirthing puts the mother in a trance, but it gives her the deep focus she will need to allow her body to do the powerful work it is designed to do. Marie Mongan’s book, “Hypnobirthing,” includes a CD with several guided visualizations that are designed to help practice deep relaxation in preparation of birth. By reframing our perspective of childbirth as something healthy and empowering, rather than something that is horrible and traumatic, we are giving a powerful gift to future to generations. Perhaps one day the birth scenes we see in popular media will be calm, peaceful and ecstatic.

The world’s healthiest nuts and seeds include:

Almonds – Almonds are a good source of protein, vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, copper, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and phosphorus. Almonds are also concentrated in protein; a quarter-cup contains more protein than the typical egg. Although one-quarter cup of almonds contains about 18 grams of fat, most of it (11 grams) is heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. Eating almonds can lower bad cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, provide protection against cardiovascular disease and diabetes, boost energy, and help prevent gallstones. Whole almonds (with skins) provide the most heart-healthy benefits.

Cashews – Cashews are high in antioxidants and have a lower fat content than most other nuts; additionally, 75 percent of their fat is unsaturated fatty acids. Cashews are also a good source of monounsaturated fats, copper, and a good source of magnesium and phosphorous. Eating cashews promotes good cardiovascular health, even in individuals with diabetes.

Flaxseeds – Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds may provide anti-inflammatory benefits, protect your bones, and protect against heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes. Eating flaxseeds also lowers blood pressure in men with high cholesterol. Flaxseeds are also rich in fiber and manganese and are a good source of folate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), magnesium, phosphorous, and copper, and lignan phytonutrients. You’ll need to grind them up first (or purchase ground flaxseed) to gain the most nutritional benefits.

Peanuts – Peanuts are a good source of heart-healthy monosaturated fat, flavonoid (resveratrol), antioxidants, phytosterols, phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate), and folic acid, making them heart-healthy, a good way to reduce your risk of stroke, and possibly even cancer. Peanuts are also a good source of vitamin B3 (niacin), folate, copper, manganese, and protein, and are a significant source of resveratrol, a chemical studied for potential anti-aging effects.. Peanuts and peanut butter may also help prevent gallstones and protect against Alzheimer’s disease. It’s wise to ensure that peanuts, especially raw ones, are stored

in a cool, dry, environment (such as a refrigerator or freezer), as an extremely toxic and highly dangerous fungus (aflatoxin) can easily grow on peanuts when the temperature is between 86-96°F (30-36°C) and humidity is high.

Pumpkin seeds / pepitas – Eating the green, hulled, pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas) may promote prostate health, protection for men’s bones, anti-inflammatory benefits for those with arthritis, and help lower cholesterol. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of the essential fatty acids, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, and copper, protein, and vitamin K.

Walnuts – Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Walnuts are also a good source of manganese, and copper. Walnuts are also an important source of healthy (monounsaturated) fats. Eating walnuts may benefit your cardiovascular system, improve cholesterol in individuals with type 2 diabetes, help brain functions, protect bone health, and help prevent gallstones. Walnuts also have bio-available melatonin, which helps regulate sleep. A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (Oct. 17, 2006) found that eating walnuts after a meal high in unhealthy fats can reduce the damaging effects of such fats on blood vessels. Walnuts also contain l-arginine, which is an essential amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide, necessary for keeping blood vessels flexible.

but themselves. This attitude is the antithesis of love.

It is sad that these people are so blind to the spiritual dimension of the universe and of relationships. But before you start feeling too sorry for them you should keep in mind that any compassion you show them will just be used as further proof of your gullibility. They will eat it up, pretend that they are touched, and then laugh all the way to the bank.

As you move through life you will encounter people who make a mockery of love. They won’t come out and tell you this. In fact, they may even present themselves as very loving. They may be quick with a smile, a hug, or a “love you” when they say goodbye. But somehow it all seems a bit hollow or insincere.

These people, who could be a friend or a relative--even a child, spouse, or parent--are engaged in a game of pretend. Deep down they don’t really believe in love. They say one thing, but their actions show otherwise. They lie to you or try to manipulate you. They do not show you respect. Their words are empty and their actions are for effect. They want to convince you that they really care about you, but they don’t.

These people live out of their ego without any real connection to their soul. Many will deny that the soul even exists, much less God. Their love is “ego-deep,” which is to say that it’s not love at all, for love can only come from the soul. In fact, they are at war with their soul. Their ego is like a malignant tumor. It seeks to engulf and dominate the larger personality. They want control, not vulnerability. They want power, not love. They want the soul and God to serve them rather than the other way around.

These people derive a hidden pleasure in fooling you. They feel superior to you when they trick you into believing that they genuinely care about you. This affirms their belief that love is for fools, the naïve, the stupid, and suckers. They make a mockery of love because they do not want to serve or be accountable to anyone or anything

DENTALHEALTH

Taking care of your mouth is part of taking care of your body. If you have diabetes, it is even more important that you take care of your mouth. Diabetes makes one more susceptible to gum disease and other oral infections. And it works both ways. Periodontal disease and oral infections can worsen a person’s ability to maintain control over their blood sugar levels.

The Center for Disease Control reports that More than 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes. Diabetics contend with decreased insulin levels and/or insulin resistance, which cause blood glucose levels to become too high. Controlling blood glucose levels is a major goal in controlling diabetes. HbA1c is a lab test that shows the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the previous three months; it shows how a person’s diabetes is being managed. This test has been shown to be more accurate than a glucose fasting test. The CDC reports that adults age 45 years and older with poorly controlled diabetes (defined as HbA1c >9%) were 2.9 times more likely to experience severe periodontitis than adults without diabetes. Diabetes that is not properly controlled can lead to periodontal disease in patients of any age.

Diabetic individuals are predisposed to periodontal (gum) disease through several mechanisms. Poorly controlled diabetics have diminished salivary flow, leading to xerostomia (dry mouth). Saliva has a natural cleansing effect, washing food particles away from your teeth and gums. It also helps to neutralize acids which can erode enamel, leaving teeth more prone to decay. Patients with dry mouth are missing the protection against decay and

gum disease that saliva normally provides. Hyperglycemia also diminishes the body’s ability to kill oral bacteria. White blood cells, neutrophils in particular, have more difficulty finding and killing bacteria. In addition, poorly controlled diabetes leads to higher glucose levels in mouth fluids, allowing growth of bacteria that contribute to gum disease. High blood sugar levels lead to elevated glucose levels in gingival crevicular fluid hindering the wound healing capacity of fibroblasts.

Evidence also indicates that periodontal disease can worsen blood sugar control. It is well established that infectious and inflammatory processes increase insulin resistance, leading to higher blood sugar levels. Periodontal disease has both infectious and inflammatory components.

The good news to take home: periodontal therapy has been shown to improve blood sugar levels in diabetics. Visiting your dental professional for treatment of gum disease can lead to better HbA1c levels three to six months after treatment. You will also be educated about how to keep your mouth healthy, which leads to a healthier body. Since diabetics are more prone to dental infections, we hope that you are now more motivated to be proactive about getting your mouth healthy early.

Memory Issues and FixesOf all the wondrous qualities of life memory must surely be one of the most magnificent and difficult to grasp and quantify. Fortunately, scientific study of the brain has given us a better understanding of some of the properties of memory, especially neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) such as acetylcholine. It is widely regarded as one of the main brain chemicals associated with memory. Many other aspects of chemistry also reflect on memory such as blood circulation, hormone deficiencies, viruses, bacteria, electromagnetic fields, allergy, heavy metals, blood sugar, fatty acid metabolism, musculoskeletal alignment, bowel health and much more.

CDP Choline and Acetyl L CarnitineThese are two of many molecules that are most effective in increasing memory. CDP choline, cytidine-5 diphosphocholine 250 mg is an important player in memory. It easily enters the brain and increases acetylcholine (Ach). I love it for lecturing, learning difficult material, remembering names and old scientific information and facts. The recommended dose is one per day, and sometimes two or three per day can even be more helpful.

Acetyl L-Carnitine is also a precursor (molecule that makes) to Ach to improve the memory. The capsules are 500mg or 800mg, one or two twice per day. It is a fatty acid and the brain loves to work on fat, as does the heart and cellular energy machinery in our mitochondria (energy powerhouses of the cells). It is

great for memory, mood, energy and anti-brain aging. Other good fats for the brain include coconut oil and its derivative MCT oil, mean chain triglycerides. One author postulated that her moderately Alzheimer afflicted husband couldn’t use blood sugar any more to fire his brain and started coconut oil supplementation with remarkable positive effects. Again feeding the brain good fats instead of just relying on blood sugar may have a positive effect not only on Alzheimer’s but also ALS, MS, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative illnesses.

Blood FlowDementia is frequently related to lack of blood blow to the brain and can be improved with chelation therapy, which removes heavy metals from the body. We all have 1,000 times more lead in our bones than the average pre-industrial man who wasn’t exposed to fossil fuel burning in the atmosphere. Removing the lead from our bodies with chelators, orally and intravenously, can reduce our body’s heavy metal load and improve circulation. Chelation comes from the Greek word chelos, the claw to grasp or bind, such as the eagle’s talon or the crab’s claw. These chelating chemicals, herbs and amino acids take out the heavy metals and calcium and remove them from the body and brain to improve circulation and notably improve memory.

Bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori not only cause ulcers but also dementia in 80 percent of chronically infected patients.

H. pylori can be removed with herbs and minerals. Viruses such as Herpes simplex are found in the brain autopsy specimens in 100 percent of Alzheimer’s patients. Virus testing and routine treatment can remarkably help memory. Mold, environmental and food allergens, and psychological stress can cause microcirculation to go into spasm, inhibit blood flow to the brain and greatly reduce memory.

Of course, bio-identical, natural hormones decline with aging. Low levels of thyroid, adrenal, estrogens and testosterone can aggravate memory decline as well.

It’s a wonderful world out there and it is very important to maintain our memory. By following a few simple steps, you might not only help save and improve your memory, but you might also prevent

Cellular memory is being created every moment. Dr. Bruce Lipton, author of The Biology of Belief, has found that every cell has consciousness as well as memory and therefore responds to its environment. Thoughts, beliefs and emotions have vibrational frequencies that are positive, neutral or negative. Thoughts that are being created on a minute to minute basis are a big part of the cell’s environment because each thought floods all 50 trillion of our cells with either beneficial, neutral

or toxic vibrations, causing that pharmaceutical company inside our bodies to create chemicals and hormones which match the thought. Therefore, we have a great deal of power over our own health and wellness by controlling our thoughts.

Dr. Candace Pert found that human placental DNA could be transformed in shape and size depending upon the emotion of the person holding the test vial containing that DNA

everything and to stay well? For one thing, negative cellular memories, beliefs and intentions as well as conscious negative scenes and memories can be removed using acupressure, a type of energy therapy. This is a quick and permanent process. You have the acupressure meridians and points built into your body, ready to be activated. A different quick acupressure technique can be used to remove daily stress so that it will not add to the build-up of anxious memories that are already in your mind and cells. This easy 14 point process simply resets your nervous system and calms you down, making it possible for you to smile at daily stresses instead of fume. Once you learn how, you can do these easy processes yourself.

Cellular memories, as well as memories stored in the subconscious mind, have a tremendous effect on our health and our lives. We are finally becoming aware of ways to release negative memories so that we can “live happy.” This is the first in a three-part series detailing the research and mind/body/spirit practices that make it possible for us to reach our highest mental, physical, emotional and spiritual potential.

sample. The DNA could even be healed later by the positive emotion of the research subject after it had already been damaged by harmful emotion! Constantly recalling negative memories can damage our own DNA! This damage creates a situation where disease can manifest. Those memories can also negatively affect our self esteem, energy level, and performance in every area of our lives.

Fear in our society seems to be settling in for a long visit. A quick look at the news tells us that people are fearful about the economy, their jobs, the future, corruption, crime and their feelings of powerlessness. The cost of this fear is often stress and anxiety. The result is an astronomical increase in the incidence of disease and depression. So what’s the end result of this fear/illness cycle? A health care system in absolute chaos, skyrocketing health care costs and a society addicted to painkillers and depression meds.

But wait, Dr. Lipton and other epigenetic researchers realize that the diseases that are overtaking us are not coming directly from external circumstances, but rather from what’s going on inside us. Even though he believes that 95 percent of all ailments have stress as an indirect cause, we all have cancer cells or other potential ailments in our bodies, but we don’t all manifest those diseases. What we think and feel on a day to day basis informs and affects our immune system. A healthy immune system suppresses and controls those diseases. In other words, we have the power to choose how we react to stressors in our lives and that reaction immediately affects our immune system. Have you noticed that you often get a cold or the flu soon after a big drama or stress in your life? So how many months or years does it take for chronic negative thoughts and emotions to cause an organ or system in the body to begin to break down and lose its healthy vibrational frequency? It depends on how the person handles stress.

So what do we do about all this to feel better about

What we think and feel on a day to day basis informs and affects our immune system ... We have the power to choose how we react to stressors in our lives and that reaction immediately affects our immune system.

What power does that memory wield?

“Going Within” Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott,

Author and Spiritual Life Coach

SPIRITUALHEALTH

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a life time. Take a look at your circle of friends present in your life right now. Regardless of why or how they might have come into your life, why are they still there? Are you calling someone your best friend, but in your heart you really see them as merely an acquaintance?

For the last two years, I’ve been single and dating. It’s given me the opportunity to reevaluate everything and everyone in my life. I never could have imagined that I would be single at 59 years of age, but here I am. It’s been nearly 20 years since I’ve been single and needless to say, the rules of the dating game have changed. The benefit for being more mature and otherwise

content with my life, dating doesn’t have the same significance as it did in my youth. If someone is going to share my life, they must be an equal partner. Their values must align with mine. No one will be allowed to enter into my Intimate Circle (the area nearest my heart) unless I see it as an equal partnership.

I invite you to imagine four orbits around your heart. The one closest to your heart is what I call the Intimate Circle. The Second orbit is your “Inner Circle” and is reserved for the closets of friends and family. The third orbit is your “Centermost Circle.” It is the realm for acquaintances and extended family members as well as work colleagues. The fourth orbit is known as your “Village Circle” and is for your

chosen community. Everything else, outside of those obits, is your Universe. Everyone in your life belongs in one of those orbits. You get to choose who resides where. You get to decide if they get to enter into an orbit (or circle) closer to your heart.

I believe someone in your “Intimate Circle” earned the right to be there, because they want to be there--for a lifetime. Those in your “Inner Circle” are the four or five people you desire to interact with daily, or several times a week. You think of them as your very best friends, your chosen family; a mentor or a treasured relative. You genuinely care deeply about their happiness as they do for yours. Folks in your Inner Circle cannot wait to share in your life experiences. Geographically, they might be halfway around the world, but when you hear their voice or read their words, it’s as if there is no time or space. They may drift into your Centermost Circle from time to time. That’s okay; don’t judge it. Siblings that you were inseparable with in your youth may drift away as they raise their own families, but then once they become empty nesters, they may drift effortlessly back into your Inner Circle. If this happens, celebrate it.

You interact with those family members, friends and acquaintances residing in your Centermost Circle from time to time, but still by choice. They are the people that it just feels good to be around. They might be the associates at work in which you enjoy working on a project with, or the person you hope to run into when you volunteer at church or school. They might even be the wacky and cool aunt that lives in another state.

Everyone else in your Village appears to be there randomly. It’s your next door neighbor, your dry cleaner, the new employee at work. If they befriend you, be discerning. As Maya Angelo says, “When people show you who they are--believe them.” Let them reside within that outer circle known as your Village for a while. Watch how they live their life. How someone treats a waiter or customer service person, will be how they will treat you when the chips are down. You can see the end in the beginning, if you look.

A few weeks ago, I had yet another “first date.” However, this time the conversation quickly turned to Spirituality, values and trust. On our first date, the other person said, “I’m going to do it differently this time. For me, to be in relationship again, it has to be an equal partnership; we must have aligned values.” I just smiled. If what I say is true, and you can see the end in the beginning, then I like how my future looks. I’m ready to carve some new initials into my tree of Life.

HERBS&SPICES

Clary Sage, or Salvia sclarea, is a hardy biennial that flourishes in dry, rocky areas. Native to southern Europe, and the Mediterranean region, and is widely cultivated around the world today. It can grow to at least a meter in height, producing large, oval shaped leaves with a pungent, balsam-like aroma, and small purple and white flowers.

One of the traditional uses of Clary sage has been to treat the eyes. Distilled flower and leaf water can soothe tired eyes. Seeds that have been soaked in boiling water produce a mucilaginous substance. Using a cotton swab that has been dipped into this liquid, when placed in the corner of the eye, foreign matter, such as dust and debris is drawn to the swab, clearing the eye.

A traditional use of Clary sage that has fallen out of favor is its use in alcoholic beverages. In sixteenth century Europe, German wine merchants infused wine with Clary and elder flowers, which made the wine extremely potent. Clary sage has also been used as a substitute for hops in beer. It is not advisable to combine Clary sage with alcohol, however. It has been said to cause both nausea and nightmares.

Clary sage has antispasmodic, astringent and carminative properties. Nerol, a constituent of the plant’s essential oil is thought to be responsible for the antispasmodic actions. Inhaling the essential oil can be relaxing for women experiencing menstrual cramping. It can be used to help women in labor cope with contractions. However, it should

not be used during pregnancy, because there is a risk that it can induce early labor, or even miscarriage. It can be used to relax discomforts related to stress, fatigue, and asthma as well.

In the kitchen, Clary leaves can be used in much the same way as typical culinary sage. The flowers may be used too, and they make an attractive garnish. Tea can be made from the dried leave and flowers, and can be used to soothe digestive upsets.

Clary sage grows easily in our arid, high desert climate. It prefers dry conditions and will develop root rot if over watered. It likes soil with good drainage. Clary sage is easily started from seeds sown in early spring. Once the seedlings are a few inches high, thin them to about nine inches apart. The plant will flower in its second year, and self sow seeds. Cover plants with hay or evergreen mulch to protect them during the cold winter months.

made me work really hard to achieve our goal, and we won a silver medal for our efforts!

4. Get information about the colleges you are looking at going into--now, not later. It is never too soon to tour colleges and request information from them. It will only help you decide what college you really want to go to, what you are looking for, and what’s the best place for you to attend to get the education you need for your future career.

5. Learn about scholarships. If you have been working hard to keep those grades high and steady, also working really hard on a certain sport, you are most likely eligible for some type of scholarship.

6. Create a portfolio. Keep record of excellent school work, copies of report cards, nominations or special awards, recommendation letters, or any other letters that document your success while in high school.

7. And at the end of each quarter, evaluate your success and you failures; which goals you didn’t reach that you would like to reach next time. Create new goals, and make sure you are still on track for meeting your long-term goals; like high grades, straight A’s, doing better in a sport, joining a club, getting a job, etc.

8. Challenge yourself. If you can, take honor classes. Those always look better on your transcripts than just regular classes.

And in the end, you will know yourself better and maybe find out something about yourself that you didn’t know before. You will be better prepared, and when the time comes for college application letters, well…you are ready! Have a great month of April!

Happy April! With spring break here and gone in a flash, it only reminds us that school is coming to an end. Summer is almost here, and while the weather is getting hotter, school seems to be getting easier as well; make sure to keep those grades up. Now is not the time to slack. Grades are always important--they are important for the rest of your school career, and they will decide your future!

I recently took a field Trip to FIDM, a Fashion Institute; I went with my Academy for Business and Law class. We went to San Francisco and toured the campus. Even though I am just a freshman, this field trip really seemed to slap me in the face and tell me that even though I still have three years left in high school, I still need to know what I want to do when I get older, what my main goal is when I get out of high school…Go to a major college, or to a fashion college; what do I want to become or be when I get older? How will my grades affect this? Do I need to work harder? What can I do to make sure I get into a college? All of these questions buzzed in my head as the tour guide was talking about FIDM. Then it hit me: I wasn’t as prepared for my future as I thought. I realized that I really needed to think about all of these things. Starting with these few simple steps:

1. Keep your grades up. Colleges like to see a steady grade book, and they especially love to see those A’s.

2. Know yourself. Get to know yourself more, really think about what’s important to you, and what you really want to be or become when you get older. You should know, or at least have an idea, of what you are looking when following the steps below!

3. Join clubs that will provide you with experience. I recently went to the San Joaquin Delta College for a Skills USA competition; it gave me an experience of the workforce. It

Not all eggs are created equal. While there is much misinformation circulating that an “egg is an egg is an egg,” there is plenty of emerging evidence that suggests diet and lifestyle of the laying hen affects the quality of her eggs. There are a lot of different labels on egg cartons these days, and that language can be somewhat confusing.

Below are some basic terms to understand:

Conventional (no special label): Your average USDA egg is produced by chickens that have less than half a square foot of space per hen, which means they don’t even have enough room to spread their wings. They are usually fed “layer crumbles” a processed feed that often contains low quality corn and soy

In an eggshell

eggs and conventional USDA eggs are compared side by side. A 2007 study by Mother Earth News, where eggs from 14 flocks of pastured hens were compared with the official egg nutrient data from the USDA for conventional eggs, showed dramatic differences. On average, the eggs from pastured hens were found to contain:

1/3 less cholesterol

1/4 less saturated fat

2/3 more vitamin A

Two times more omega-3 fatty acids

Three times more vitamin E

Seven times more beta carotene

A link to the full study can be found in the references at the bottom of this article. Several other studies that have been carried out since the 1970’s have found similar results. If we can agree that food we eat impacts the health of our bodies, isn’t it only logical to conclude that the diets of the animals we eat impacts their health, and by extension our own? Supporting local ranchers who raise pastured hens is a great way to support your local economy. Raising your own hens is surprisingly easy and cost effective too! Eat real food that has eaten real food, and support happy, healthy animal production!

ingredients, which are often from GMO sources. These chickens are often loaded with antibiotics to prevent disease conditions that are more likely to occur in these cramped conditions. They may also be given hormones to boost egg production.

Cage Free: At first glance, this sounds like a good thing right? Way better for the chickens than the conditions mentioned above. Cage free hens are often kept in a large barn and are able to move about without being kept in cages. This does not mean that they have access to the outdoors however. Often times, these hens have part of their beaks burned away to prevent them from pecking at themselves and others, a behavior that is a sign of distress.

Free Range: While seeing this label would make one think of chickens frolicking across lush green pastures, this is not necessarily the case. All that is required to qualify under this heading is for the chickens to have access to an outdoor area, such as a small door for them to exit the barn. This does not mean that the chickens will actually be outside, or if they

are, that they are provided healthy pastures where they can forage for food, as they would naturally.

Organic: This means the hens were fed organic feed, from a non-GMO source, but not necessarily well rounded, natural diet. These chickens are not given hormones or antibiotics.

Vegetarian: The hen is fed vegetarian feed. On the one hand, this is good because the hen is not being fed any feedlot by-products from say, other chickens. However, chickens are omnivorous animals, not vegetarians. They naturally want to eat bugs and grubs, so vegetarian fed hens are not given access to pasture or their natural diets.

So far, all these labels spell out a pretty grim picture for life as a laying hen, don’t they? So what is the best choice for a healthy egg? Your safest bet is to purchase eggs from a local producer, that way you can see for yourself exactly what kind of conditions the hens are living in. An ideal situation for a laying hen is one in which they are able to range freely on pasture, or are housed in movable coops that are frequently moved. This gives the chicken access to forage for bugs, grubs and greens. It is ok if their diet is supplemented by organic chicken feed.

Yes, these eggs will likely be more expensive than the conventional grocery store variety, but you are getting what you pay for. There have been several studies in which true pastured

GARDENING

“A Rough Patch”

Written By Teresa Howell

My sister Beth and sister-in-law Becky dropped by my house unexpectedly this week. Late February is the official beginning of my gardening season, and I was preparing to plant some seeds that need an exceptionally early start.

I was working at the table, so I moved a bag of potting soil and a stack of clear plastic salad containers so they could sit down. I like to start seeds in those containers; the lids seal and make an ideal greenhouse environment, allowing in light and retaining moisture and heat.

“I see you’re making room for the relatives,” Beth said. “It’s funny how some members of a family are beautiful, and some useful.”

“And some are both,” Becky said.

“There’s no need to argue,” I soothed. “You’re both very attractive.”

“Plenty useful, too, as you ought to know,” Beth said. “But we were talking about the new types of seeds you’re preparing

to plant. They’re relatives of things you’ve had in the past.

Sure enough, they were.

I’m replacing the artichokes I grew last year with cardoon. They’re so closely related they can pollinate each other. They look and taste very much alike, but cardoon is grown for the fleshy stems, while artichoke is grown for the flower buds.

Both artichokes and cardoon are perennial in warmer climes, and I piled garden debris on the artichokes last fall, hoping to cozy them through the winter, but I’m sure they didn’t survive our cold snap. Artichokes produce tastier and bigger buds the second year, and that second year is elusive in our zone. So I’m trying cardoon, which takes the same conditions, with the hope that the quality is good even the first year.

The other relative is a little charmer named Roselle. If you’ve ever had tea with “hibiscus” in it, chances are, you’ve made her acquaintance. We associate hibiscus with Hawaii and other tropical places, and Roselle doesn’t like cold. But if you can provide her with a sunny window until the weather warms up, she should do fine in our area. She’s drought tolerant, and needs only mildly fertile soil.

By now, the reader is probably peering at Roselle like an elderly aunt at a family reunion. “Now which branch of the family do you come from?” I can hear you ask.

Roselle is a member of the malvaceae, or mallow family. She’ll grow to five or six feet tall--if she lives up to the hype on the seed packet--and her red foliage will beautify the garden. Her less exotic cousin is the still-beautiful Hollyhock, which readers will recognize as a supremely well-adapted ornamental. She’s also related to the Rose of Sharon shrub, another good choice for Nevada landscapers.

Still another relative, one less likely to show up at the family reunion, or in Nevada gardens, is . Scarlet grows wild in the Great Basin. Although she’s a wild one, she will locate happily in your garden, where a little extra water will keep her blooming all summer. Scarlet globemallow plants used to be available from High Country Gardens, which did not survive the economic downturn. However, seeds are still available.

Hollyhock, Rose of Sharon and especially Scarlet might as well be wallflowers when Roselle is around. I’m expecting her red leaves will set off the silvery ones of the cardoon perfectly. They’ll be the most dashing members at the family reunion this summer.

When Teresa Howell isn’t trying to decide which of her relatives is the most beautiful, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

her grandmother’s wall. She was not religious, and had never been what she calls a “big Jesus fan,” but she knew the face. She writes, “The love was so vast and complete it saturated me with sensations for which I don’t have words to describe. The feelings were not of this world.”

Although there were no words spoken, she knew that she had the choice to stay or return to her life on Earth. She had a long time to decide. There was no pressure. Then, when her two boys suddenly appeared before her, she realized what she wanted to do--return to her body, get well, take care of her family and get on with her physical life.

She returned to her body and slept through the night, something she was rarely able to do because of the constant

This is the story of one woman’s journey of healing from Crohn’s disease, an “incurable” condition. At her lowest point, one of incredible pain and misery, lying in the hospital hooked up to every imaginable device, she just decided to die and get the whole thing over with. All this was way too much of a struggle for herself and for everyone in her family. It was then that she had an out-of-body experience where she found herself rising through the ceiling of her hospital room, moving through the next floor and the next, until she found herself outside, looking up at the stars and smelling the clean fresh air. She felt no pain; an incredible peace. She felt surrounded by love, and then realized she was lying on something: she was being held by two very large hands! And then she saw the face of Jesus that she recognized only from an old picture on

It was like a door opening into a room inside her own house that she’d never visited.

The author takes the reader through many experiences as she regains her power and heals her body. There are times when she lets herself go into pity-party mode, but her body immediately shows her what she’s doing by giving her the beginning symptoms of Crohn’s disease again, a wake-up call. As she changes her thoughts and emotions, the symptoms disappear. Although this is a true story, it reads like a novel. There are many wonderful quotes in this book. All are appropriate for the lesson that the author was learning at that time. Most are universal truths that it would be beneficial for all of us to understand.

The bottom line: when we have negative thoughts about others we are disempowering ourselves. Those people you resent or hate? The political tribe in power that is not your tribe? You may feel they don’t deserve your good thoughts. But YOU do! You deserve your good thoughts about them. That is what the Art of Allowing is all about, allowing your own well-being. pain. The next morning, her doctor bounced into the room all excited about the improvement in her white cell count. He knew she was trying all kinds of mind/body/spirit therapies, but he didn’t believe in any of them. He asked her anyway, “What did you do last night?” She was still processing the experience, and would be for many years, so she just said, “I’ll tell you someday.”

But she did remember to ask the doctor something that her father requested she ask: “How many people have you cured

of Crohn’s disease?” His answer stunned her. He said, “None. This disease is incurable. You will have it for the rest of your life.” That cruel statement was the beginning of her healing; from that moment on, she realized she could not afford to be susceptible to adopting another person’s opinion as her own because in doing so, that would affect her life in countless ways. She realized that if she considered that person an authority figure then it was even more likely that she would consider their truth as the ultimate truth. Doubly so, if she was paying them for it!

The night before she had seen things as they really were, and realized on a very deep level that she was much more than her physical body, and that she could put her attention on what she wanted, and thereby cause it to become a reality in her experience.

Many more realizations lay ahead, the most important being to forgive all the resentments and negative or hurtful scenes that she was holding onto. She also continued to realize how much she had adopted other’s ideas and beliefs, how much she had swallowed their truths without deliberately examining them for herself. Where did she get these beliefs?

Do you eat these harmful foods that AGE you faster? Some are even deceptively marketed to you as “healthy” by giant food corporations. Avoid or minimize these and look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis, some foods age you FASTER than your real age, while other foods help to FIGHT aging.

Eat the wrong foods regularly, and you can look and feel 10 or more years OLDER than your real age (not fun!). But eat the right foods, and over time, you can start to look five to10 years YOUNGER than your real age.

Three of the processes that go on inside your body that have a MAJOR impact on your rate of aging are called “glycation,” “inflammation,” and “oxidation.” When we talk about aging, we’re not just talking about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is...we’re also talking about factors that you can’t see, such as how well your organs function, and whether your joints are degrading.

Yes, I’m sure you’ll agree this is much more important than just how you look on the surface (although we’ll show you how to improve BOTH!)

So let’s dig right in and I’ll show you how your rate of aging can be directly related to the foods you might eat every day, and how to protect yourself...

Food #1 Wheat (yes, even “whole wheat”)

Before I tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let’s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body… This deals with “glycation” in your body, and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your

joints, and of course, wrinkled skin.

So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levels over time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type II diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age. But, this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics. It can affect everyone.

So, let’s get back to how “whole wheat” relates to this... Here is a little-known fact that’s often covered up by the massive marketing campaigns by giant food companies that want you to believe that “whole wheat” is healthy for you. The fact is that wheat contains a very unique type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A, which has been found in some tests to spike your blood sugar higher than even pure table sugar.

In fact, amylopectin-A (from wheat) raises your blood sugar more than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth, based on blood sugar response testing.

This means that wheat-based foods such as breads, bagels, cereals, muffins, and other baked goods often cause much higher blood sugar levels than most other carbohydrate sources. As you know now, the higher your average blood sugar levels are over time, the more AGEs are formed inside your body, which makes you age FASTER.

You’ve probably heard about the potential health-damaging effects of gluten (also found in wheat) in the news recently, but this blood sugar aspect we just covered is not talked about that often, and is yet another reason to reduce or eliminate wheat-based foods in your diet. Your body will thank you by aging slower and looking YOUNGER!

These Four Foods Accelerate Aging

Food #3 Sugar, sugary foods, certain starchy foods

Again, we get back to the relationship between your average blood sugar levels and blood sugar spikes over time, and how that can increase those age-accelerating compounds called AGEs in your body.

Sugar is an obvious one to avoid. You’ve heard how bad it is for you a thousand times before for many other reasons, including your waistline and developing type II diabetes. But now you also understand the aging effect of sugar.

Instead of sugar, consider using a natural non-caloric sweetener like Stevia in your daily coffee, tea, in baking, or other sweetening needs. This dramatically helps you control your blood sugar response and thereby help slow aging.

So this also means to think twice about sugary desserts, sugary cereals, candy, and other sweets that are contributing to aging you faster.

My personal trick to satisfy my sweet tooth is to only have one to two squares of dark chocolate after dinner instead of a normal full dessert that most people choose. You only get about two grams of sugar in one to two squares of dark chocolate, as opposed to 40-80 grams of age-accelerating sugar in a typical cake, ice cream, or brownie type of dessert.

Keep in mind that some starchy foods like white rice, oatmeal and white potatoes can also have significant impacts on your blood sugar, and thereby can increase formation of AGEs in your body. These foods are best kept in smaller portions if you decide to eat them, and balanced with healthy fats and protein to slow the blood sugar response.

Food #4 Soybean oil, canola oil, or other “vegetable oils” I know these have been marketed to you over the years by giant food companies as “healthy,” but if you understand a little biochemistry about how these highly-processed oils react inside your body, you would quickly see how false that is.

First, anything labeled soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, vegetable oil, or cottonseed oil (these are in a lot of processed foods you probably eat) most times have undergone a refining process under extremely high heat and use of chemical solvents such as hexane.

This leaves you with an oil where the polyunsaturated fats have undergone a lot of oxidation and are therefore VERY inflammatory inside your body, producing free radicals, damaging your cell membranes, contributing to faster aging, heart disease, and other possible health problems.

If you want to avoid the health-damaging effects of soybean, canola, corn and other “vegetable oils”, make sure to avoid them as much as you can, and instead opt for truly healthy oils and fats such as extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, virgin coconut oil (a healthy source of MCT fats), and grass-fed butter (a great source of healthy CLA fats).

* www.truthaboutabs.com

In fact, my own dad, who is in his mid 60’s now, just removed 95 percent of the wheat from his diet about three months ago (aside from a little bit on one cheat day per week), and he’s noticed that his chronic joint pain has completely disappeared! Not only that, he also commented that he’s finally lost those “love handles” on his sides that have been plaguing him his entire adult life...all by reducing his wheat intake!

Another problem with wheat-based foods and aging:

As it turns out, baked wheat products contain carcinogenic chemicals called acrylamides that form in the browned portion of breads, cereals, muffins, etc. These carcinogenic acrylamides have been linked in studies to possible increased risk of cancer and accelerated aging. Note that acrylamides are also found in high levels in other browned carbohydrate sources such as french fries or any other browned starchy foods. Don’t worry though, there’s a trick that you can use to protect yourself from these carcinogenic acrylamides, and it has to do with eating the RIGHT foods that COUNTERACT damage from these nasty chemicals.

Food #2 Corn-based foods -- corn syrup, corn cereal, corn chips, corn oil

This is quite a variety of stuff that you might eat every day. We’re talking corn chips, corn cereals, corn oil, and also the biggest health-damaging villain that gets most of the media attention, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

We already talked in detail in the last section about wheat regarding the blood sugar process and it’s relation to age-accelerating formation of nasty “AGEs” in your body.

Well, corn-based starchy foods such as corn cereals, corn chips, etc also have a big impact on blood sugar levels and therefore can increase AGEs in your body and accelerate aging.

But here’s another nail in the coffin for corn…it turns out that scientists have found out that the fructose in HFCS causes ten times more formation of AGEs in your body than glucose! Yes, that’s right, that means the HFCS you consume daily in sweetened drinks, and most other processed foods (yes, even salad dressings and ketchup) contribute to faster aging in your body, as if you needed yet another reason to avoid or minimize HFCS!

We’re not done yet with corn...it gets even worse: Another major issue with corn-based foods and corn oils is that these foods contribute excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids to your diet, which causes an imbalance in your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio and leads to inflammation and oxidation within your body. Once again, it is another example of corn-based foods aging you FASTER.

My advice: Avoid or reduce corn-based foods like corn chips and corn cereal as much as possible. These aren’t as bad as wheat in relation to blood sugar, and they don’t contain gut-damaging gluten like wheat does, but they are still bad for you. When it comes to corn syrup or corn oil, avoid as much as you can if you want to stay lean and young looking.

You know what they say: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. As it turns out, that couldn’t be truer. Apples offer a wealth of benefits for your body, helping you to feel healthier and to avoid disease. Eating this fruit regularly is a great way to treat yourself to a sweet (or tart) snack while also giving your body a little health boost. Check out this list of 10 remarkable health benefits you can get from eating one of the most affordable and delicious fruits out there.

1. Lower CholesterolHaving high cholesterol counts can lead to several health problems in the long run. By eating apples, you consume phytonutrients, which can lower your LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. One study found that eating two apples a day has the potential to lower cholesterol levels by as much as 16 percent. For that much of a reduction, eating apples may be the easiest way to lower your cholesterol.

2. Improved DigestionFor people with digestive problems, apples are an easy way to get you back on track. Apples are packed with fiber, which helps regulate your digestive system. That means regular, smooth bowel movements and less pain and discomfort from indigestion and constipation. In the long run, apples can also help you avoid certain stomach disorders by keeping your digestive system in check.

3. Energy Boost The natural sugars in apples are good for more than just their sweet taste. They also provide a natural energy boost. That’s why apples are a great choice for an early-morning snack or a post-workout treat. They taste great while also giving you the perk you need without having to drink caffeine or energy drinks.

4. Anemia TreatmentApples are packed with iron, so they offer a convenient way to treat anemia. Iron increases hemoglobin levels in the body, which counteracts the effects of anemia. That’s why it can help to eat an apple if you happen to feel weak or faint. The natural sugars combined with the rich iron content will help give you the boost you need to feel alert again.

5. Reduced Risk of CancerApples have several health benefits that may help you reduce your risk of certain types of cancer. The fiber in apples helps regulate your digestive system, lowering your chance of getting colon cancer in the future. Furthermore, several studies have also shown a strong link between eating apples regularly and a reduced risk of breast cancer. Apples are also one of the few fruits and vegetables that have been shown to lower a person’s risk for lung cancer. Overall, apples are quite exceptional in the area of cancer prevention.

6. Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular DiseaseApples are often noted for their rich antioxidant content. As it turns out, the fact that apples contain antioxidants actually makes them one of the more heart-healthy fruits. By consuming apples, people can protect lipid peroxidation (the oxidation of fats) from occurring. This lowers the risk for a long list of chronic heart problems, including cardiovascular disease. Since the risk for heart problems increases with age, it’s never too late to start eating apples to improve your heart health.

7. Relief for AsthmaIf you suffer from asthma, drinking apple juice can help give you a little relief from your symptoms. Studies have linked drinking apple juice at least once a day to a reduction of wheezing and other breathing problems associated with asthma. The scientific proof for this health benefit lies in the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients found in apples. For the best results, make sure that the apple juice you are drinking is fresh. Expectant mothers can also take steps to prevent asthma in their children by eating a lot of apples while they are pregnant.

8. Better Diabetes ManagementPeople with diabetes can encounter serious long-term effects related to the disease, including neuropathy, kidney disease and vision problems. By eating apples regularly, those who have

diabetes can help prevent some of these long-term risks. That’s because apples have pectin, which alleviates the body’s need for insulin. Furthermore, the polyphenols in apples help to improve the regulation of blood sugar in the body.

9. Improved EyesightEye problems are often unpreventable, but fortunately, apples can help to ease some of the effects of poor eyesight. Apples contain a considerable amount of both vitamin A and vitamin C, which help to treat night blindness. They also strengthen eyes and can help to prevent eyesight from worsening.

10. Prevent Alzheimer’sOne of the most amazing health benefits of apples is their ability to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Though studies are still being conducted in this area, several have already found that a special ingredient in apples called quercetin can protect brain cells from free radical damage, the kind which has been shown to cause Alzheimer’s disease. This discovery has given fruit eaters just one more reason to love apples.

So next time you’re at the grocery store, consider picking up a few of your favorite apples. Whether you’re dieting, trying to eat healthier or just plain living your life, they’re a great investment with excellent results.
