When they die the stones are pouredout over their body. If there are morewhite stones than black stones thewhole community celebrates. If it is theother way round everyone goes home.May those of us who believe the Easterstory live our lives to the full, not just forourselves but for the welfare of allhumankind, so that the number of whitestones will always overflow intocelebration.+Peter Taunton

From the Bishop of Taunton The fullness of life nowI was struck by an article by JanetStreetPorter in the Independent onSunday which was titled, ‘Better a fulllife than an endless one’. She wascommenting on some new researchbeing funded by a group of technologybillionaires, Mark Zuckerberg ofFacebook being one of them, who werelooking into the possibility of extendinghuman life.In her classically direct style sheconcludes, “I can see no reason toextend my life beyond what is normaland have no intention of copying MrZuckerberg and turning into a wrinkly125 year old reliant on gadgets andsupplements to get me through mydreary day.”We are in the Easter season and thereis always a temptation to considereternal life as the promise of some kindof endless life in the future, but thegospel of John in particular is keen toemphasise that the promise of Easter isnot fullness of life in the future, butfullness of life NOW. Of course that isnot simply a selfish hope that my life willbe full, but rather a gospel imperativethat those who believe in the Easterstory should work and pray for fullnessof life for all humankind, not leastamongst the poor and thedispossessed.A native Indian tribe in North Americahas a tradition. At the end of each day, each member of the tribe is invited tocollect a stone – a white stone if it hasbeen a good day and a black stone if ithas been a bad day.

Folly FieldThe picture on the front cover thismonth shows the new plaquecelebrating the registration of ourplaying field with Fields in Trust as aQE II Field. The purpose of the Trust(set up by HRH Prince William incelebration of his grandmother’sJubilee) is to protect playing fields inperpetuity. The field was already protected bybeing a registered charity but the newtrust deed will add to that protectionand will help with achieving grantsshould we want to improve facilities inthe future. The name given to the field has notbeen changed but is now even longer! It’s full title is: The Wynne Willson WarMemorial Recreation Ground, A QEIIField but I suspect most people willstill refer to it as The Folly Field.Anyone seeking further explanation canhave their questions answered at theAnnual Parish Meeting on 15 April.Stan Cherry, for Bathford ParishCouncil.
