Babysitting 101

My oldest daughter is approaching the age when she will be on the hunt for babysitting gigs to supplement her less than meager allowance. She doesn’t have the benefit I had of many younger brothers and sisters to practice on, plus she refuses to read

the “Babysitters Club” books my mother-in-law thoughtfully bought her, so we’ve sought out other ways to learn the basics. Thankfully most of my friends have kids younger than mine, and are more than happy to lend us their little ones for diaper changing and bottle making tutorials. The next step will be an American Red Cross babysitting class, where she can learn first aid and other emergency skills my friends wouldn’t be quite so willing to lend us their children for. But while the experts are more than welcome to provide my daughter with a certificate of course completion to include with her cardstock resume when the time comes to attract clientele, the teaching of the most important elements of child care will come directly from my husband and me: love, forgiveness, patience, quality time, communication, and possibly even a raise of her meager allowance.

PARENTINGPERSPECTIVES

Two local parents sound off about life, parenting, and relationships.

Adventures in babysitting is more than an 80s movie starring Elizabeth Shue. It is also what all parents go through at one time or another. Who to call? How often to use them? What happens

when no one on your regular list of sitters is available and you desperately need that date night? Here are some tips to help deepen your pool of sitters, as well as how to begin preparing your child to enter the babysitting years.the truce of the battle of the sexes

PARENTING PERSPECTIVES

HE SAIDIf you want to forever solve your babysitting dilemmas, find a job at a college and you’ll have an endless supply of 20-year-olds eager to spend a night away from mom and dad’s house or their dorm rooms to hang out with your kids. Some of them might even try to pay you! That’s what we’ve done anyway.

We have been very fortunate to have many people help out through the years with watching our kiddos. Even though we have a wide range of people who would be willing to watch our children, here’s what we look for in choosing the right person for the job. One of our kids’ favorite sitters is a 6’4” former men’s college basketball player. We knew he would be great by the way he interacted with our kids when we went to watch his games. He was always so happy to see them and interacted well with them so when we decided to ask him to babysit one night, it was a perfect fit. The kids had a great time and often ask when he can come watch them again. Definitely not your traditional babysitter, but fantastic nonetheless. With the other sitters we have used, it’s been nice that my wife has been able to pre-screen them because she works with them daily so she knows more about them personally and can identify who are the most responsible and trustworthy.

We try to not use babysitters all the time, but when we do go out for the occasional date night (more on that next month!) we know that our children are being well taken care of. This helps us relax and enjoy ourselves rather than making calls every fifteen minutes to make sure everything is OK. If it’s a babysitter you’re using for the first time, definitely ask for references if you don’t feel 100 percent sure of their ability or skill level. Also, don’t be afraid to look outside the box. This could include looking

at nephews or male cousins who could be easily overlooked. The main reason boys don’t babysit as often as girls is because they’re not asked as often but if you know of a boy who could be a good fit, don’t hesitate to ask. We found our kids’ favorite that way.

Justin Farrell is a married father of two living in Vancouver. With a deep pool of available babysitters, he is always willing to help connect people with the right sitter. You can connect with him through his blog at courageousvancouverdad.wordpress.com to start a conversation if you’re in need of a sitter. PS: If it’s been longer than two months since your last night out without the kids, definitely make it a priority to get in touch with him.

SHE SAIDAt 12 years of age, my daughter is eager to start babysitting. I want her to be well prepared, so we’re doing our homework. As we talk with other parents about what they are looking for in a babysitter, there are a few key qualities that consistently arise. Overall, parents want their children to be cared for by a responsible person. What does that look like?

1. A responsible babysitter is engaging. As Justin shared, the babysitters kids most love are those who sit down and play. They want to be there. (And they don’t rely on the television for entertainment.)

2. A responsible babysitter is focused. One mom mentioned she wants a sitter who will “put away the cell phone.” The child is the main event. Parents also want to leave instructions and know that they will be followed.

3. A responsible babysitter is trained. This means that the sitter has had plenty of experience. Ideally, he or she has also taken a class in emergency preparedness. Many

parents today look for sitters who are able to drive and who have access to a cell phone.

With these points in mind, there are a few things that my daughter and I are doing in order to bring her to the point of readiness. The first step has been to give her plenty of opportunities to play with young children in our home. I’ve also asked a few friends with young children if my daughter can practice babysitting in their homes. Two or three times a month, she cares for a child or two while the mother is present. She is learning to change diapers, guide behavior and feel comfortable in an authoritative role.

Because she has continued to show enthusiasm for this venture, our next step will be to enroll her in a babysitting course—perhaps through the Red Cross—in order to make sure that she feels completely confident on her own. I know this confidence will serve her well, and she’ll be ready to join the ranks of engaging, focused and well trained babysitters.

Julianna Lawson and her husband, Jamie, make their home in Vancouver where they are raising their four children, ages 7 to 15. Julianna also writes at petuniajune.blogspot.com.

YOUR MONEY'SWORTH

APRIL IN CLARK COUNTY MEANS that the cabin fever of winter is finally behind us! The sun is starting to peek out from behind the clouds a little bit more and families begin to look for some fun activities around town. Since school won’t be out for a few weeks yet, now is a great time to plan some outings that are fun, frugal and educational all at the same time.

Here are some local hotspots that are sure to please, without breaking the family budget:

Ridgefield Wildlife RefugeThe Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge covers more than 5,000 acres and is home to an astonishing array of wildlife. Birds migrating through the Refuge use the area as a stop on the Pacific Fly-Way, a major north-south bird highway route that stretches all the way from Alaska to the Southern tip of South America. In addition to birds at the Refuge, raccoons, deer, coyotes and beavers can also be spotted in the area.

If you plan to visit the Refuge, be sure to pick up a bird identification book and pack your binoculars. As your family explores the Refuge, keep an eye to the sky to spot eagles and hawks circling overhead. Beavers are hard at work constructing massive dams and the lucky visitors might get an up-close view of a family of raccoons returning from a fishing trip. Kids can also experience history at the Cathlapotle Plank House, an authentically reconstructed

Chinookan home designed to appear just as the

famous explorers Lewis and Clark would have encountered when they traveled through the Clark County area more

than 200 years ago.

The Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge actually consists of two distinct locations, River “S” Unit and The Carty Unit. The River “S” Unit is a 4.2 mile auto tour designed

f o r v i s i t o r s to visit the Refuge from the comfort and convenience of their own car. A seasonal 1.2 mile hiking trail is also available at River “S” Unit. At the Carty Unit visitor will find a 2.0 mile self-guided nature trail as well as the Cathlapotle Plank House.

The Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge does charge a daily entrance fee of $3.00 that can be used for visits to both Units. Special events are also held at the Refuge throughout the year, so check the calendar at www.ridgefieldfriends.org.

Build something fun at Home Depot or Lowe’sEach month Home Depot offers free hands-on workshops for kids ages 5-12. Workshops are held on the first Saturday of each month. Each child receives a kids’ workshop apron, a commemorative pin and a certificate of achievement. Home Depot supplies all of the necessary tools and materials and kids are able to keep the craft they create. In April kids will build a birdfeeder and in May kids will build an herb planter. In June the craft is a lawn mower pencil holder and be sure to check out July’s workshop with a surprise craft based on the movie, “Despicable Me.” For more information and to register your child for a workshop, please visit www.homeimproverclub.com.

Lowe’s also hosts free craft workshops for kids at its store locations. Each child receives an apron, goggles, a patch and more. All supplies are provided at Lowe’s and kids can keep the crafts, however Lowe’s workshops are limited to a specific number of children per session. Workshops can fill up quickly, so be certain to visit www.lowesbuildandgrow.com for more information and to register for upcoming workshops.

Water Resources Education CenterLocated near the Columbia River off Highway 14, the Water Resources Education Center is open 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission to the Center is always free!

Be sure to v i s i t

the Center on the Second Saturday of each month from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Each second Saturday is special at the Center. Families are invited to explore the Center’s monthly theme through a variety of hands-on activities and special events. The Second Saturday theme for April is “Snakes, Lizards and ‘Gators Up Close” and includes a live critter show at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Second Saturday theme for May is “Swamps, Marshes and Bogs.” For more information, visit www.cityofvancouver.us/watercenter.asp.

Getting out to see the sights of Clark County doesn’t have to be expensive. Family fun outings can be found all over the area. Whether you see the wildlife in Ridgefield or your kids build something of their own at a crafty workshop, Clark County has a lot to offer that is entertaining and educational all at the same time.

Pamela is a home school mom that has lived in Clark County for more than a decade. Her hobbies include “birding” so you just might spot her over at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge as well. You can find her writing about homeschooling teenagers, books and downsizing her life at www.lavishbookshelf.com.

Feature Article: Rockhounding for Treasure

What’s a rockhound? By definition a rockhound is an amateur collector of rocks and minerals. The reality? A rockhound is a treasure hunter. As all parents know, kids are natural treasure seekers and collectors, and this is why rockhounding can be such a great activity for families. Don’t worry if you can’t remember the difference between sedimentary and igneous rocks. You may have forgotten most of what you learned about earth science, but soon you’ll be digging into a stunning mother “lode” right alongside your kids.

To get started, find a field guide to rocks and minerals at your library and begin looking at the beautiful pictures—glassine quartz crystals, ornate agates, sparkling pyrite, and more. There are many guides written for kids, and these often introduce information in simple terms—perfect for the parent lacking a PhD in geology! After you’ve piqued your child’s interest, plan a family rockhounding excursion. You’ll be amazed at the treasure trove lying just outside your door. Here are some tips to make your first adventure successful:

Keep it simple. Many experts recommend the seashore or a streambed for a first excursion. The equipment needed at such sites is minimal. Garret Romaine, author of “Gem Trails of Washington” says, “Picking up pebbles does not require any special equipment—you can load up your pockets to your heart’s content, or recycle the baggie your sandwich came in.” He also notes that “modest goals are best.” Some children may be satisfied with collecting a few pretty treasures to show their friends. Others will be interested in sorting and identifying the rocks and minerals they’ve collected. Follow your child’s lead.

Deliver the goods. You don’t want your kids to walk away with empty pockets on their first outing, so go to a site with a proven track record. Several print guides list collection sites by state or by region. (Try the “Gem Trails” or “Falcon Guide to Rockhounding” series.) However, you’ll also want to get current “insider” advice on kid-friendly sites from an active rockhound in your area. Mineralogical societies abound in the Northwest, and the members of these “rock clubs” are prime sources of information. (Try the Washington State Mineral Council at www.mineralcouncil.wordpress.com for a list of groups near you.) Christina Daniels, mother of two young rockhounds and adviser for the Junior Club of the Southern Washington Mineralogical Society, always takes new kids to a spot along the Salmon River on their first outing. She says, “They find carnelian, red and yellow jasper, petrified wood, and sometimes coprolites [fossilized dung]. Kids are always successful here.”

Know what you’re looking for. You’ve decided on a site, and you know what you’ll find there. Or do you? Rarely do the beautiful isolated photos in your field guide match the material at the collection site. Quartz crystals need to be scrubbed and polished and agates need to be sliced or tumbled to achieve the radiance you see on the page. Find pictures of the raw

Safety Tips

• Dress in long pants and shoes with covered toes.

• Use eye protection if you (or anyone in the group) are using a hammer/chisel.

• Park safely off the highway when collecting from a road cut.

• A reliable vehicle is a must if your excursion takes you onto rough or rarely used roads.

• Be aware of any other recreational uses for the site (ATV use, hunting, etc.).

• If you are on public lands, make sure collection is permitted.

• Always ask for permission before collecting on private property.

• Supervise children closely when collecting at mines and quarries. Never enter mine shafts or abandoned buildings.

specimens you’re seeking, and take them with you. Better yet, ask your local expert (from the rock shop or mineralogical club) to show you some raw samples.

Enjoy your outdoor family time. You’ve probably heard the saying, “There’s no such thing as a bad day of fishing.” Well, the same might be said of rockhounding. Why? Because there’s more to the experience than finding rocks (or catching fish). Kids love to scrabble in the dirt, pounce after crickets, and watch the clouds pick up speed as the weather changes. In many ways, there is no treasure more precious than experiencing these things with the ones you love. Christopher Williams, a coastal geologist and environmental educator, fondly remembers family hikes and building “size of a bedroom” sandcastles on beaches of the Northwest. He concludes, “Many of my best talks with my parents and five siblings and now my spouse have happened not at home, but out in the beauty of nature.” Romaine echoes this sentiment. Having been a rockhound for years, he has a substantial collection, but admits, “My favorite specimens are the ones handed down from my grandparents.” In the end, your child’s collection will consist not just of rocks, but of crystalline memories and rock-solid connections too.

Ashley Talmadge is a freelance writer who lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two wild young rockhounds. She looks forward to many years of adding to the family treasure collection.

My Kid’s Got Rockhound Fever! Now What?• Join a local rock club. Benefits include field trips, mentorship, opportunities to trade specimens, and access to expensive lapidary equipment and services for low or no cost. Some members have been rockhounding for decades and their practical knowledge is immeasurable. Membership fees are low (usually $15-25 annually) and sometimes family memberships are available.

• Invest in some equipment. A magnifier (or loupe) is handy, and if you’re interested in collecting material from stony outcrops and road cuts you’ll want a rock hammer/pick. A gold pan will help separate the gravels if you’re spending time in streambeds, and a rock tumbler will bring out the shine in your specimens. Your child will want some boxes and trays for storing and displaying her finds. Seek recommendations, and don’t buy a piece of equipment based on price alone.

• Go to a gem and mineral show. These exhibitions occur throughout the year all over the country. Kids get to see a vast array of rock and mineral specimens, many of which can be purchased inexpensively. Fun activities often include games with prizes, digging for treasure, and rock-related crafts. Try www.rockngem.com for an extensive list of 2013 mineral shows nationwide.

• Plan a rockhounding day on your vacation. Whether it’s petrified wood near Yakima, or star garnets in Idaho, or sapphires in Montana,

your kids will be enthralled with the specimens they’ll find in far-flung locales. Williams, the coastal geologist, has a sand collection containing samples from every continent, including Antarctica! Stroll through a museum with a rock exhibit, or pop into a local rock shop and talk to the proprietor. You may want to try a “fee-to-dig” site. These are usually privately owned properties. Owners charge a fee, ranging anywhere from $5-$200+ per person (less expensive for material like thundereggs, more expensive for gemstones). In return they regularly turn the soil, scrape embankments, or separate gravels on a conveyer belt—whatever it takes for customers to leave with bona fide treasure.
