EDITORIALDear reader,

Before Pigeon team started the April edition, we had a hot discussion on what the next newsletter should look like…All of us had a very different view according to their background and their interests…and at one moment I was afraid that we would never find one common theme suitable for expressing all of us…Who are you, the ПИГЕОН reader, for whom are we creating the articles?

It reminded me of a situation at one party I attended – it started as an ordinary party with the regular people I usually meet. And suddenly a friend of mine asked us: “Say 5 things you think you are”. Simple. Is it really easy to describe yourself? What I am doing in my life? Some of the people there started to identify themselves through nationality, education, gender...family, life style, ambitions…Well, I am still developing this topic myself…I guess all of you contemplate the same theme from time to time – who are we?

Let’s try to develop this question and get closer to the answer in this edition.

Identity crisis, anyone? Well at least you’re not alone. Many of us can feel quite lost upon approaching adulthood, when there is no Cinderella or Spiderman to identify with, or an emo/jock/preppy/hipster category to fall into for that matter. Better to translate that into the milieu of Serbian teenagers: if you spent most of your time watching your fake nails grow out, then you’ve probably never developed a taste for Goldfrapp or Sepultura. If your mum enrolled you in a music school to learn to play the violin, then you never really felt anything in common with a hard core Rad supporter. In case your mum enrolled you in a law school because that’s supposed to be good for you, then you most likely have troubles realizing just exactly what lies at the core of your being and if asked to describe yourself, all you could say would be: ‘I’m Serbian, Orthodox Christian, from Uzice.’ and are in dire need of growing some balls and some intrapersonal skills.

However, I really wouldn’t like to delve into what influences in a person’s surroundings or at what an extent their personal inclination have a go at molding their innermost identity. In other words, what makes them tick and who or what set the mechanism of what makes a person and wound it. I don’t profess to be Freud. In fact, it can sometimes get tricky to find tour own compass due to the abundance of those circumstances and influences.

But I’m getting too brooding and abstract. The thing is, nobody can tell you for sure what you are and in what direction you should navigate the sea that is your life. Nowhere does this statement ring true so obviously than when you get to choose your career path or a partner – and what a better way to tell about identity than to confess about one’s own. In my romantic history, to name but a few boys who made their way to my heart: a consultant, a few musicians, a certain hockey player, an architect, a couple of writers and a politician constitutes the current addition to the lot. How strange are the ways of the heart, and what psychological influences make one choose one guy and not another? The history of relationships imprinted in early childhood, or

did one inevitably lead to another? And what about my endeavours? I dabbled in becoming a singer, a musician, a diplomat, a town floozie, a devoted girlfriend, to name but few. Reading has been my passion since age 7, and after a number of years I could not do without writing as well. Surprise, surprise.

I didn’t turn out bad I’d say, actually. I know it’s hard to grow up with a constant feeling of political, financial and social uncertainty, to put things in the context of the surroundings of our beautiful but non-giving and highly underestimated country, how I see it. The colourful social tapestry of Serbia is also a thing to consider! What is your taste in friends does affect you in developing in a certain way. If you enjoy partying on the boats of Sava singing Sinan’s songs, fine by me if you enjoy it. However, if you run into an old friend who came up with the topic of the latest episode of Suleiman, and you don’t really feel like sharing her enthusiasm, then may the Force be with you and turn the conversation in another direction, being a true Jedi that you are. After all, there is a small thing called mental hygiene. I almost forgot: if you’d take my advice, be sharing, be bold and daring, try different things, be curious – it does count when trying to find the Holy Grail that is yourself.

Extend your acquired knowledge to the way you perceive the world and the people around you. Maybe some postulates need challenging? The Rad supporter might deeply appreciate Proust, for example, for all we know. Notice the didactic tone? That’s because you’re reading to the comment of a certain teacher.

The meditative journey has reached its final destination. Best of luck in your journey of self-exploration!

Šta je identitet? Ko smo mi? Da li je identitet ono što nam po rođenju pripada, ili je to stvar izbora, ili pak modnog stila. Može biti sve to – rezultati su mini-ankete koje je sproveo Pigeon. Identitet predstavlja sliku koju čovek stvara o samom sebi. Ona je vrlo često realna, a još češće i nerealna, što predstavlja posledicu ljudskog delovanja u grupi kojoj pripada – pišu udžbenici sociologije. Postmodernistički period izrodio je mnoge oblike i pojave identiteta: Tedi bojsi, hipici, skinhedsi, modsi, Srbi, Islanđani, Utopljani, demokrate, socijalisti, levičari ili desničari – čovek ima potrebu da bude deo neke grupe. U toj grupi on pronalazi sebe i daje sebi identitet. Čoveku je potrebno da se oseća sigurno i on teži da pripada, teži da se izrazi na sebi svojstven način, da bude individua. Svoju individuanost on, ipak, mora podeliti sa drugima – onima koji će ga prihvatiti takvim kakav je. Kako rezultati ankete govore, mladi u Srbiji svoj identitet posmatraju iz više uglova. Imajući u vidu da je to generacija koju je zaobišao talas burnih devedesetih godina, teret nacionalističkog delovanja i razmišljanja je naizgled izbegnut. Oni su, pre svega, ono šta osećaju pa onda državljani neke države i stanovnici nekog mesta. Razmišljanja iskazana u anketi, ohrabrujuća su i govore da postoje mladi na ovim prostorima koji grade svoj identitet iznad nametnutih okvira.

„Srbija ima odličan košarkaški tim“, rekla mi je Rasa iz Vilnjusa. Bilo je prirodno da krenemo od košarke, budući da se u vreme našeg razgovora igralo Evropsko prvenstvo u njenoj domovini. Tako je u Litvaniji započelo moje putovanje i potraga za mladim ljudima širom sveta u želji da saznam što više o njihovoj kulturi, umetnosti, jeziku i načinu života. Priče koje sam sastavio na osnovu tih razgovora objavljivao sam u okviru rubrike „Razglednice“ na svom blogu. „Da budem iskrena, ne znam mnogo toga o Srbiji“, rekla mi je Rasa. „Znam da se nalazi u Evropi – njeno ime mi je savršeno poznato. Međutim, ne znam gotovo ništa o vašoj istoriji ili kulturi. U litvanskim školama se sva pažnja posvećuje velikim ili susednim državama. Osim po košarci, Srbija mi je poznata po tome što je pobedila na Evroviziji pre nekoliko godina.“

Razgovaram, potom, sa To Hujan Tun Ci. O Vijetnamu sam znao koliko i ona o Srbiji. Vijetnamski rat bio je moja prva asocijacija na najistočniju državu Indokine. „Srbija… Kosovo… To je prvo čega se setim“, rekla je inženjerka vodenih resursa iz Hanoja, vijetnamske prestonice. Sledeći sagovornik bila je Sara Fong iz Singapura. Kada je čula da sam iz Srbije, oduševljeno je rekla: „Oh, Srbija! Zemlja prelepih ljudi, fantastičnih pojava! Andrej Pejić

je čudesan: toliko ga obožavam da to teško mogu da opišem rečima! Da li u Srbiji žive samo lepi ljudi?“ Zastao sam na momenat. Da li je moguće da jedna Singapurka zna nešto o Srbiji što ja ne znam? Andrej Pejić? Gugl mi je pomogao da saznam da se radi o našem manekenu koji jednako dobro nosi i muške i ženske revije. Sara je o njemu nekoliko puta frenetično pisala na svom blogu.

Luis iz Mozambika rekao mi je da zna da smo nekada bili ujedinjeni sa Crnom Gorom, te da ga je raspad državne zajednice prilično iznenadio. „Znam i to da je Srbija južna slovenska država, ali je ne mešam sa Bugarskom, Slovenijom, Slovačkom, Hrvatskom ili Rumunijom, kao mnogi moji sunarodnici. Poznata mi je još i po slavnom režiseru, Emiru Kusturici.“ Dejvidu iz Londona Novak je bio prva asocijacija na Srbiju. Rekao mi je da se nada da će Novak i Endi igrati finale Olimpijskih igara. U Srbiji je postalo pomodno ne voleti Novaka. Jer, Bože moj, to je tako mejnstrim. Ali, hvala Bogu, sada ne moram ljudima da objašnjavam odakle sam govoreći „Serbia… Yugoslavia…“. Mnogo lepše zvuči „Serbia… Đoković!“

Leipzig – Theatercamp on Refugees and MigrationNumber: DE-SCI 9.99Time: 12.8. – 1.9.2012The camp is being run in cooperation with an independent theatre, with a community project in Leipzig (“Zolle1”) and a local community initiative (“Gieszerstraße”). The international volunteers together with 4 teenagers from a local refugee centre will first discuss and formulate their ideas & expectations and these can be expressed using theatre methods. Afterwards they will learn and practice techniques and expressions of acting (playing in a group, voice and breathing, improvisation, body language, methods of non-verbal communication). Finally, the theatre, renovation and building work will hopefully culminate in a final public performance or in the form of a street action that can take place in the city.

When you go on EVS you usually meet people that ’are like you’, people that are into intercultural exchange, into meeting people from other countries, for peace and would definitely describe themselves as very open. This is the experience I have had so far, living and working with people that have travelled and all in all live a more international life and dedicate their volunteering to a peace-organization/ breaking down stereotypes, but then in the end of February, after a little over a month in my EVS, I was hitchhiking from the Romanian border to Vršac and I met some people that were wonderful and very helpful to me, but on the other hand shared some stories that show a political view far away from „open“.

The two people who in the end did not just drive me to Vršac, but all the way to Pančevo, were a father and a son. They had been driving for 20 days by the time I met them, getting goods from far away and transporting them to Serbia. The first ten minutes we just exchanged the typical hitchhiking stories – Where are we from? Where are we going? And what do we do?

After only about ten minutes the conversation took a completely new turn though and without any question of mine leading there the two men started telling me their view on Serbia and the wars. The father had fought in the first half of the 90s and after that served in the military police. He was a fierce nationalist and had taught his son to be exactly this as well. I heard stories about the war, about Albanians bringing on a new war because of their behaviour, about Kosovo being the part of Serbia with the best natural resources, etc. They were very proud of their participation in the wars, their racist and nationalist views on the Balkans and the rest of the world, their aggressive approach towards gays... In the beginning I was rather irritated and did not know how to react, but as the evening was descending in the middle of the countryside of a country which language I didn’t speak, I decided to just spend my time in this truck listening. All I did for the next hours was basically ask „Why?“.

Why am I writing about this in the identity-edition of the ПИГЕОН? The experience was interesting for me in two ways: Firstly I am an anthropologist and I met a completely different

part of the Serbian society than I had ever met before. I learned a lot this evening about their view on Serbia and the world and listened to all the arguments carefully, as the situation did not give me space to argue back.

Secondly, before I left my home I had to fight against the prejudices Austrians and others hold against Serbians because of the wars in the 1990s and one of the people I talked to about my EVS actually referred to Serbians as „bad people“ because the only thing she knew about Serbia was from a book written by a Kosovarian war-orphan. I think when I tell her about these two men she will say that she told me so and that these are exactly the people that she was talking about. But why would I declare them as bad people? Yes, they have views that I strongly oppose to. Yes, they have a very aggressive and racist attitude, and in my opinion a harmful approach to the world around them and as a peace activist I would love to see views like this put into history. But, on the other hand the younger one, after 20 days of traveling, went two hours out of his way instead of going directly home, because he wanted to take me to the bus station in Belgrade to make sure I made it home safely. So, yes, I will probably not spend time with these people in the future because I think their actions for example against homosexuals in the demonstrations were horrible, but I will not declare them „bad people“, because even though they might hold those views, in another situation they are more supportive than all those leftist people that describe themselves as open, but in the end did not stop to take me into their cars.

This to me was another reminder to myself to listen to people and their stories before I judge them, which does of course in this case not mean in any way that I would adopt any of their views, and also to think outside the box again – a view or an action of a person seen through my eyes that I would never ever agree with does not make that person a bad person. This is what EVS and volunteering is all about to me and in the philosophy of SCI and I learned it again in an extraordinary situation.

The multiple identities which divide humanity are numerous. Ranging from gender, race, ethnicity, to less fixed identities such as political preference or social class; what each of these have in common is that they can all be defined with a reference to both Self and Other, to a ‘me’ and ‘you’ or an ‘us’ and a ‘them’. What is particularly interesting is why humans adopt (and in several instances fight for) these divisions. This paper will explore these reasons, as well as offer an explanation why some identities, such as nationality or ethnicity, are most common and dominant in the world we live in.

The first observation I will offer is that as well as developing individual identities, most of us also have a need to construct specific social identities. Each should be considered distinct from each other, and relevant depending on specific situations. For example, if I were to be attacked in public, my personal experiences, skills, recollections etc. would prove dominant in deciding how to deal with the situation. If I define myself as a tolerant, non-violent individual, it is these characteristics which would determine how I solve the situation. They are my personal qualities, and they will confront a very personal situation. In contrast, in a time of war for example, when the threat to the ‘group’ is supposedly the highest, experiences, responses and attitudes (which include stereotyping) are often conceptualised through a ‘group lens’. But why? Does this apply to everyone? Surely many of us rejected anything to do with ‘our’ nation when it went through all the wars in 90’s?

The study on social identity first emerged in the late 1980’s by a group of psychologists, who started with the argument that deep, deep down most of us have a desire for a sense of belonging. Agree? In other words, we need a concept of ‘us’. As children we find this in our family; it is they who surround us, and the home is the little world that we know. As we grow into society and meet not only different families, but different languages, colors and interests, our sense of collective also has to expand. However, the way we define ‘us’ or ‘who we are’, is by meeting ‘them’ or ‘who we are not’. Let’s go back to 1990’s Serbia.

Sure, not all of us bought into the regime’s propaganda calling for a strong Serbia against the ‘other’: the Croat, the Albanian or even the unpatriotic student protestors. Sure people even took to the streets in rage against the regime and to show the world that there were deep divisions in Serbian society and not everyone was a nationalist killer; but what really gave solidarity to these ‘Serbian’, ‘Orthodox’, ‘student’, ‘pacifist’ or ‘navijacki’ identities, if not that strong desire to show others, as well as ourselves, who we are and who are absolutely not! The need for a ‘us’ and ‘them’ works both ways, as do the stereotypes, lack of social understanding and ignorance that follow.

What’s more, not only are these identities in no way permanent, but they are ever-changing, from situation to situation, from place to place. Ever felt proud to be where you’re from, your culture and your country whilst in another country, even though you would never consider yourself a proud-Serb whilst back at home? Why? Because who ‘they’ are has changed. The social divisions you dealt with on an everyday basis at home have been replaced with the Germans, Swedes or French you now deal with on an everyday basis, and so has the way you define yourself!

Think back to Egypt last year. In a society bitterly divided between its Muslim and Coptic populations, it was these religious identities which dominated the divisions in society for decades. Then, as the revolution to remove the Mubarak regime suddenly exploded in January 2011, these deep divisions almost instantly evaporated. It was no longer important if you were Muslim or Coptic, but only if you were pro or anti regime, the concept of ‘us’ and ‘them’ had altered in days. Images around the world of Muslims and Coptics praying together in Tahrir square could have even given the hope that Egypt would come out strong and united from this socio-political crisis. In reality, of course, as soon as the crisis died, as did the temporary ‘other’, and the old religious identities came back into play. The vendettas, riots and bombings which followed are history...

i.e. don’t have such strong, natural lines of division such as ethnicity or religion, this psychological need for a sense of belonging is so strong that new lines are created. Ever wondered why so many of Serbia’s youth divide themselves by football, even if our domestic quality is one of the worst in Europe? In these young, urban circles, not divided by social class (population is overwhelmingly poor), nor by ethnicity or religious segregation (there are no more Siptari or Ustase to hate); the most apparent divide is between ‘red’ and ‘black’. It is whether one is a Zvezda or Partizan fan which can influence who he socialises with, which flag and anthem he celebrates, what perceptions he has of members of the other group and which ‘temple’ he attends every Saturday afternoon.

Outdoor Museum ModraNumber: CZ-INE 9.8Time: 6.8.- 18.8.2012The project is held in the outdoor museum of the village Modra in the beautiful region of South Moravia. The museum shows everyday life and agricultural production in one of the most remarkable periods of the Czech history. It offers scientific presentations and educational programmes (like pottery and experimental melting of metal). In the area archaeological exploration is being done continuously. The work takes place outdoors, mainly in the archaeological open-air museum. Help with the construction of new buildings for the open-air museum, archaeological exploration (diggings), help with the organization of local cultural events and participation in them, help with gardening works in a newly created area nearby the outdoor museum, other manual work according to the current needs of the museum. Study part: Learn more about local history: An excursion to the Great Moravian Empire Monument in Stare Mesto, which offers an exhibition documenting this important era of Czech history and a professional guided tour of the open air museum held by Ludek Galuska, Ph.D., will be organized for you.

Završen je još jedan veliki derbi dva najpoznatija tima naše države. Kao u većini slučajeva, jedan od timova je odneo pobedu dok je drugom opet ostala vera u uspešniji rezultat na nekom od derbija koji predstoje. Stotine navijača i jednog i drugog tima na dan velike utakmice obavlja standardne rituale koji im ulivaju pouzdanje i veru u favorizovani tim. Kao hodočasnici koji polaze dobro određenom maršrutom na svoje svetilište, gde će pronaći svoj duhovni smisao i mir, tako i navijači timova polaze na njihovo „sveto mesto“, mesto gde će uz pesmu i koreografiju izgovarati „molitvu“ u znak podrške svom klubu. Zvuk sudijske pištaljke za početak utakmice se oglasio i u tom trenutku sve je podređeno bodrenju omiljenih im timova. Dve strane, jedna protiv druge, i dve neutralne, uglavnom tako to ide na slavnom stadionu Marakane ili onom drugom, nešto manje slavnom ali ništa manje značajnom. Sever i Jug, u isto vreme uz ovacije prate svoje timove. Ovacije su prisutne sa svih strana, pesma je zapevana a dobro uvežbana koreografija prezentovana. „Svaka fudbalska utakmica nosi svoj poseban duh i čar, bez obzira na dobro uvežbanu proceduru navijanja koja se ponavlja iz utakmice u utakmicu. Ritual se ponavlja, ali je u stvari svaki jedinstven, jer ni utakmica nikad nije ista“. Jedan od navijača kaže da je navijanje njegov hobi, ono što

ga ispunjava jer na taj način ispoljava ljubav prema svom klubu. Mnogi navijači (pod tim „navijači“, isključivo se podrazumevaju navijači kao fanovi klubova, a ne huligani), nakon prvog učestvovanja u ovakvom vidu bodrenja svog tima, nisu želeli da ostane na tom, već su jednostavno to pretočili u jedan niz koji se nastavlja kako se broj utakmica povećava. „To je pravi doživljaj, jedan mali izlet, ekskurzija, super druženje, sjajan način da se ispolji ljubav prema ovom sportu i klubu za koji se navija“. Nažalost, u svemu ovome se mogu izdvojiti i neke negativne strane koje pre svega proizlaze iz konfliktnih situacija koje se javljaju tokom navijanja (tačnije huliganstva), ali koje neću navoditi kako ne bih pokvarila utisak onog što zaista i jeste pozitivno u priči. Kako kažu da je fudbal

najvažnija sporedna stvar na svetu pa isto to može da važi i za Srbiju. Fudbal je sport koji je u našoj zemlji uživa znatnu pažnju pa je u 2011. godini i dalje bio najpraćeniji sport, praćen košarkom a potom tenisom. Ono što bih mogla izdvojiti kao prednost u odnosu na druge sportove koji su popularni kod nas, jeste i to da je gotovo nemoguće proći kroz mesto koje nema fudblaski tim, pa tako i fanove koji bodre svoje ekipe. Očigledno je fudbal u Srbiji dobio mnogo na značaju. Popularan je kako među omladinom, tako i među starijom populacijom. Kako bih dočarala njegovu rasprostranjenost u našem okruženju, za shodno sam našla popularni slogan „Politikinog zabavnika“, koji kaže: „za sve one od 7 do 77“, tačnije 107. :)

Poslednjih pet meseci, Volonterski klub u u Njegoševoj 3 okuplja sve veći broj mladih ljudi na različitim radionicama. Pored konverzacije na engleskom i francuskom jeziku, održavaju se i radionice sahaja joge, zanimljive geografije, gitarske sekcije kao i radionice koja će vam pomoći da se kroz igrice profesionalno orijentišete.

Kroz radionice je prošlo više od 100 različitih ljudi tokom poslednjih meseci (koliko se radionice održavaju), od kojih su mnogi i više nego zadovoljni ponuđenim.

„Meni se radionice veoma dopadaju i radioničari su veoma prijatni i uvek spremni da pomognu. Mislim da je ovo odlična stvar, jer na besplatan način radimo na poboljšanju našeg znanja i to u odličnoj atmosferi.“ – kazala je Tamara Ambo, učesnica radionice konverzacije engleskog jezika.

Volonterski klub postoji kao deo Volonterskog centra Vojvodine od 2010. godine, kada se došlo na ideju o formiranju edukativnih radionica, budući da su istraživanja pokazala da je na teritoriji Novog Sada veoma malo sadržaja koji se tiču neformalnog obrazovanja. S toga, klub se ponovo aktivira u tom svojstvu 2011. godine pod finansijskim pokroviteljstvom grada Novog Sada.

Radionice vode motivisani i nasmejani mladi ljudi, volonteri, uglavnom studenti . Oni, pored brojnih obaveza na fakultetu, svoje vreme izdvajaju upravo da zajedno sa učesnicima radionica zaključe, nauče i utvrde ono što su nisu ili jesu znali. Pored njih, tu su i volonteri koji u Srbiji borave preko Evropskog volonterskog servisa (EVS), mladi ljudi iz Engleske, Poljske, Belgije, i Austrije. Oni preko svojih veština kroz održavanje radionica, našim mladim ljudima prenose i svoju kulturu i jezik.

Volonterskim klubom rukovode dve mlade koordinatorke – studentkinje završne godine pedagogije: Vesna Laković i Katarina Žarković, koje kažu: „Očekujemo da klub bude prepoznat među mladim ljudima kao mesto koje pruža mogućnost za kvalitetno provođenje slobodnog vremena, mesto na koje ljudi mogu da dođu i podele znanja i veštine koje poseduju.“ – navode koordinatorke i dodaju: „Cilj nam je da što većem broju mladih ljudi pružimo raznolike i korisne sadržaje, pre svega besplatno.“

Svakim danom nam stiže sve veći broj pozitivnih komentara, što nas dodatno motiviše da nastavimo I poboljšamo funkcionisanje ovog projekta’’.

Njegoševa 3 – gradski kutak za slobodno vreme!

One of the tools SCI uses to spread its mission and vision is non-formal education. In this framework we find many different sessions held mostly on trainings and workcamps to reflect on ways towards a culture of peace and/or discuss topics related to this. Of course in this area of our work we can also find sessions on identity, so I would like to invite you now to take a couple of minutes and think about answers to the following questions. The answers you would give would most probably be complex, but try writing down only one sentence per question.

• What are my roots?• What am I?• What do I like?• What do I want?• Where am I going?

I hope you took the time to write this down for yourself. It is interesting to play it again and again from time to time and see how all those things can change depending on the context you are in and the way your life is going at that moment.

Time: 30.4. – 7.5.2012The Region Perm was during the Soviet period one of the main regions where the repressive policy of a totalitarian regime was carried out. In 1927 one of the first camps of GULAG were built here and mass use of prisoner labour on industrial projects began. Till the last moment of the Soviet Union political prisoners (so called “prisoners of conscience”) were held in custody in Perm region. Volunteers will do interviews with the locals and gather ‘oral history’, search for witness accounts of the history of political repressions in the USSR and the local area, trace the coordinates of former resettlement areas and GULAG zones which were located here, and erect temporary signs to commemorate the victims of political terror. The gathered interviews will be collected into a electronic historical archive and the most interesting ones will be published.

Svake nedelje Volonterski klub organizuje različite tematske radionice.Neke od radionica koje organizujemo su i francuski i nemački za početnike,engleski konverzacijski klub, capoeira muzika, osnove astrologije, reciklažna umetnost,profesionalna orijentacija kao i sahaja joga.Radionice su besplatne i otvorene za sve zaintersovane bez obzira na uzrast.Nedeljni raspored i proceduru prijavljivanja na radionice možete pogledati na sajtu www.volontiraj.rs

Ištvan Farkaš (1962) je beskućnik, ali njegovo svakodnevno čergarenje umnogome prevazilazi filozofiju „od jutra do sutra“. Njegova je ličnost spoj različitih krajnosti, ali prevazilazi umetnost „sastavljanja kraja s krajem“. Studirao je na Pedagoškoj akademiji. Sluša i živi bluz. Bori se za prava Roma, ali i za sopstvenu egzistenciju. Za prvo se bori rečima; za drugo rukama i kantom. Na onome što se eufemistički zove „sekundarne sirovine“ može da zaradi za hranu, a ponekad ni toliko.

- Da li namerno živite kao beskućnik?- Rekao bih da je to „polunamerno“. Mogao bih da živim bolje nego sada, ali bi u tom slučaju trebalo da napravim kompromis sa mojim osnovnim principima: morao bih da budem nečiji poslušnik. Ne želim da bilo kome poslužim kao igračka za sopstvenu afirmaciju. Dešavalo se da dobijem stan na korišćenje, a da se pritom ponašaju robovlasnički prema meni.

- Dekada Roma počela je 2005, a završiće se 2015. godine. Na koji način pomažete ostvarivanju romskih prava?- Završio sam niz seminara i kurseva u Srbiji i Mađarskoj, a sa Novosadskom novinarskom školom putovao sam u Bugarsku. Predsednik sam Romske asocijacije za nepristrasno informisanje „Basno“. Nemamo sopstvene medije, pa se služimo alternativnim načinima promocije romskih prava. Delujemo preko građanskih akcija i inicijativa, konferencija za štampu, saopštenja... Na taj način smo uspeli da promenimo količinu i vrstu informacija o Romima. Istovremeno pomažemo Romima, motivišemo ih u takozvanom „samoaktivizmu“, pomažemo im u rešavanju pravnih začkoljica, pronalaženju posla, ostvarivanju socijalne zaštite…

- Koji su najveći problemi Roma u Novom Sadu?- U Novom Sadu se odvijaju brojne akcije u vezi sa Romima, ali su gotovo sve usmerene

na Veliki Rit, Bangladeš i eventualno na Adice i Šangaj. Pritom se zaboravljaju desetine romskih porodica u urbanim delovima grada. Oni su izbegli sa Kosova, ne rade, nemaju stan, prose, žive u podrumima, zarađuju od „kantarenja“…

- Imate mađarsko ime, borite se za romska prava, govorite nekoliko jezika… Kako biste predstavili sebe? Koliko je nacionalna pripadnost bitan deo Vašeg identiteta?- Nacionalnost je bitna, ali nikako nije na prvom mestu. Kada bih rangirao, bila bi sedma ili osma stavka mog identiteta. Naravno, postoje određene situacije kada moja nacionalnost dolazi na prvo mesto. Ta promena u rangiranju važnosti dešava se onda kada branim nacionalne interese Roma. Najvažnije mi je da budem – čovek. Na drugom sam ja kao pojedinac, sa svim različitostima koje me odlikuju. Na trećem mestu sam ja kao građanin, pa Novosađanin, stanovnik ove ulice, pripadnik neke generacije, profesije, pola…

- Šta znači biti Rom?- Moje poreklo je romsko i ja se trudim da forsiram pozitivnu stranu romske kulturalnosti. Međutim, mnogo je toga negativnog. Mnogo je toga što treba menjati. Brojni su sukobi među Romima, po različitim kriterijumima: srpski Romi protiv mađarskih, seoski protiv gradskih, obrazovani protiv neobrazovanih, kovači protiv perjara… Zbog tog međuromskog fašizma, ponekad se zapitam da li želim da budem Rom, da me neko izjednačava sa njima…

- Da li Vas vređa izraz „Cigan“?- Sam naziv ne može da vređa. Sam naziv ne znači ništa ružno, kao ni „Srbin“, „Mađar“... Vređa ono ko kaže i kako ti kaže. Imam mnogo dobrih prijatelja koji mi kažu „Cigane moj!“, a kad se šale sa mnom, onda me nazivaju Rom. Sam naziv „Rom“ je, po nekim izvorima, pogrešan. On navodno znači čovek. Ali „čovek“ je „manuš“, a Rom znači „čovek iz mog plemena“.

- Verujete li u to da će se Vaš trud isplatiti?- Moj trud nije uzaludan. Možda tako izgleda u ovom momentu, jer vreme provodim u prizemnom, običnom svetu. Međutim, znam da ima efekata mog truda. Ljudi koji učestvuju u akcijama koje organizujemo prestaju da budu samo Romi. Oni postaju građani. Zahvalnost ne očekujem. Ipak, ljudi kojima sam makar i za milimetar pomogao, uvek će rado hteti da mi uzvrate.
