HAVE FUN & LEARN OVER SPRING BREAK!
Mobile Stories ProgramContinuing this Spring, the MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO, in partnership with SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARIES, introduces a new way for youth to have a voice within their
communities. MOBILE STORIES is a FREE afterschool program that uses the popularity of mobile phone technology to connect local youth (ages 9-18 years old) with the extensive resources available at their local library in a format that is both current and easily acces-sible. The library recognizes the ubiquity of cell phone technology; the need for under-represented youth to express their voices re-garding news and events in their neighborhoods; and MOBILE
STORIES potential to connect youth and their interests and needs with the information and resources of the library.
“The stories we tell in our local communities are part of the larger stories happening around the world. By partnering with the local library using the same tools to tell these stories, we are not only highlighting the importance of these stories, but showing the importance of libraries as active parts in the creation and interpretation of these shared histories for the public,” said Ethan van Thillo, Executive Director, MEDIA ARTS Center San Diego.

MOVIES TO WATCHBy: MACSD Staff Members Glenn Heath and Julia Richardson
Alambrista! (USA) 1977, Criterion CollectionAlambrista! is a scathing critique of modern im-migration issues and class division. Alambrista! tells the harrowing story of one undocumented worker’s struggle to transcend the harsh realities of his surroundings. Robert Young’s brilliant film lies somewhere between the work of Richard Lin-klater and Luis Buñuel, a funny, tragic, and surreal slice of social realism that feels more important now than ever.
Even the Rain/Tambien la Lluvia (Spain/Mexico) 2010, LionsgateAs if you need another reason to watch Even the Rain other than it stars the incredible Gael Garcia Bernal! Featured at our 2011 Que Viva Cine Lati-no Series, Even the Rain is a film-within-a-film about a director and producer who set out to Bolivia to make a movie in the midst of political unrest. The scenes are gripping, the emotions high, and the film blurs the line between reality and fiction.
El Bola (Spain) 2000, Film MovementIf you want to watch a great Spanish film, El Bola is one that’ll really pull at your heartstrings. It’s about Pablo, a 12-year-old boy living in an abusive home who befriends his new classmate, Alfredo. Pablo is able to find some solace as Alfredo and his caring family reach out to him. The acting is great, and you really want to give Pablo a big hug and tell him, “Everything’s going to be all right.”
