NATIONAL Americans for the Arts Public Art Network (PAN) is pleased to offer scholarships for members to participate in

the 2012 Americans for the Arts Public Art Preconference, June 7-8.

DEADLINE: April 18, 2012

There are two types of scholarships:

Public Art Administrator

Texas-based Artist The scholarship is intended to help public art professionals gain valuable career development experience and

information resources.

Eligibility: Applicants who have never attended the Annual Convention nor a Public Art Preconference are

eligible to apply.

Applicants must be current members of Americans for the Arts.

The scholarships will cover the PAN Preconference registration fee and offer travel stipends.

FLORIDA The 2012 Florida Public Art Year in Review is now accepting submissions through CaFE: www.callforentry.org

Florida Association of Public Art Professionals is pleased to announce the Call for Submissions for the annual

juried state of Florida Public Art Year in Review.

Participate and bring valued recognition through the arts to your city and/or to you as an artist. Public art

projects submitted will be reviewed and selected by this year’s jurors Helen Lessick and George Bolge.

The deadline to submit is April 18, 2012

All projects submitted, as well as those selected by the jury for the 2012 FLORIDA Public Art Year in Review will

be presented at the statewide Annual Florida Association of Public Art Professionals conference in Fort Myers,

Florida, May 3 – 5, 2012.

BRADENTON

'Located in Florida, Bradenton’s Village of the Arts is a gem of an arts

community surrounded by industrial commercial roadway. Motorists would

often drive right by the Village, unaware of its existence.

The Village residents desired a signature artwork which would alert passing

motorists to the presence of their distinctive community.

Historically, the neighborhood had seen better days. Then artists began to

move into the 1920s era bungalows, painting their properties wild tropical

hues, transforming the area into a colorful treasure trove of galleries,

residences and studios.

This transformation was the inspiration for the sculpture entitled ‘Chrysalis

Launcher’ which utilizes a classic symbol of metamorphosis, the butterfly

emerging from it’s chrysalis.

Chrysalis Launcher is tilted at a dynamic angle to invite visitors in,

introducing them to the metamorphosis that art has made in the

community, aiming ‘wings of art’ down a main street of the Village of the

Arts. The wings appear to flutter out and alight on lamp posts throughout in

the Village streets. The color palette of the ‘wings’ was inspired by the by

the vibrant colors of the homes, galleries and studios in the Village. Many

residents have walked up to the sculpture, pointed to a set of wings and

said, ‘Those are the colors of my house!’.

The sculpture is composed of three distinct parts; a concrete base and a

stainless steel chrysalis form topped with forty sets of colorful abstract

wings. It is designed to withstand Florida’s challenging environment and is

engineered to meet Miami-Dade hurricane code requirements. (Dade

County has the strictest requirements in the state of Florida for wind-borne

debris and wind load. )

The sculpture has been well received by the community, garnering attention

from passing motorists and getting multiple thumbs-up from viewers of all

ages during installation. Requests are being made for additional lamp-post

wing sets to be installed on more of the neighborhood streets.'

BROWARD The Broward Cultural Division Public Art and Design Program has named local Broward

artist Steven Sylvester, as the Allied Artist for Terminal 3 Terrazzo Floor Design Project

at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The artist’s team commissioned

for the project is David M Griggs and Scott Parsons. The Duane Hanson Allied Artist

Award Program was established in 1994 to honor internationally-recognized artist

Duane Hanson, who resided in this community and who was instrumental in

encouraging the careers of Broward artists. Allied Artists are partnered with

commissioned artists based on their level of experience, artistic medium and general

interests.

The Terminal 3 Terrazzo Floor Design Project is a major component of the modernization and reconfiguration

plan that the airport is implementing to provide passengers and visitors with a more efficient and pleasant

airport experience. It is designed for Concourses E & F, and the Departure Level of Terminal 3, approximately

67,500 sq. ft. The design is based on the vastness, beauty and complexity of the environments of Fort

Lauderdale, Broward County and South Florida and the uniqueness of its ecosystems that is defined by the flow

of water, from freshwater to saltwater; by the Everglades biome to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Steven Sylvester was selected by the commissioned artists to be their Allied Artist because of his drive and

appreciation for uncommon uses of materials. Sylvester creates exceptional, noteworthy work. His current

work-in-progress series of life-sized ladies dresses made from clay and wire continues to amplify this drive as it

develops into the traveling museum show for which it is slated. Sylvester became a member of Architectural

Ceramic artist Peter King's StoneHaus team, where, by the side of this world-renowned artist, he worked on

numerous public and private commissioned art projects, thus further feeding the drive for uncommon material

use in addition to large scale public works.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

Glass Art Proposals Deadline April 6

The deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 6 to submit stained glass art proposals to the Hillsborough

County Public Art Program. The County intends to award contracts to stained glass artists and

fabricators for the creation of artwork at various new or existing County libraries, anticipating a

$15,000 - $20,000 budget for each project. From initial submissions, the County will develop a

short list of artists for further consideration. These short-listed artists will develop themes and

site-specific visual proposals to will enhance and support the mission of the specific County facility.

OSCEOLA COUNTY Osceola County Mural – Valencia College

To commemorate the significant contribution that Osceola County made to support the construction of Building

4, they have commissioned a local artist, Juliana Davidson, to create a 16 foot by 8 foot mural that will be

permanently installed in the Atrium of Building 4. Their vision for the mural is to create a collage of images that

depicts Osceola County's history and represents each of the distinct communities in Osceola County.

KISSIMMEE Join us as we host the 2012 Sculpture Pub Crawl on April 14th in Downtown

Kissimmee sponsored by Yuengling who will be on hand, serving 6 different

beers that aren't even available to the public! Live music, a silent auction and

SOUTH FLORIDA EcoArt South Florida is working with local grassroots group in Belle Glade, Palm Beach County on a Summer

EcoArt project featuring our dynamite former EcoArt apprentice Jesse Etelson who will be creating several

EcoArt projects related to Torry Island and Lake Okeechobee, involving Workforce Alliance interns and other

young people, introducing them to EcoArt practice.

JACKSONVILLE CALL TO ARTISTS

Eligibility: Open Call to all Professional Artists, no geographic restrictions Not more than five finalists will be selected from the RFQ and asked to develop concept proposals for this

project. Each will be paid a $1,000 proposal fee and reimbursed up to $1,000 for travel to Jacksonville for

presentation of proposal.

Project Description / Scope of Work

JAA and JIA Arts Commission are seeking artists to develop and submit site specific artwork proposals for the

Courtyard Restroom Fin Wall and two Water Fountain Surrounds within JIA, which is centrally located within JIA

between the Haskell Gallery and the Sky Gallery. This will be a focal point of the courtyard, which is JIA’s most

heavily traveled area, with nearly six million passengers per year. JAA and JIA Arts Commission expect that a

signature work of art will create a memorable experience for all who visit Jacksonville. The Courtyard Restroom Fin Wall is in a location that will withstand substantial wear and abuse. Materials for

final fabrication must be highly durable and permanent in nature. Artists will have the opportunity to install

artwork directly to wall surfaces. Artwork may not be floor mounted. Artwork may not extend out from wall

surface more than four inches. Maintenance of work should be able to be accomplished by unskilled staff.

Artists Daryl McCann, Lucy Keshavarz and Jesse Etelson will showcase their recent work, presented by EcoArt

South Florida and the US Green Building Council at Jupiter’s annual Artigras festival of the arts. Their public

EcoArt featured a "living wall," art-as-stormwater treatment, and sculptural habitats for small animals, birds and

bees designed for natural areas in restoration.

WINTER PARK The City of Winter Park's Art on the Green 2012 is in process. The Call to Artists was posted at the end of

February and artist applications are due April 20.

Art on the Green 2012 is a competitive sculpture exhibition where eight sculptures will be exhibited for six

months in Downtown Winter Park from September 2012 through March 1, 2013.

The primary juror is Olga Viso, current Director of the Walker Art Center, former director of the Hirschorn

Museum and former curator for both the High and Norton Museums. Olga is a Florida native and Rollins

graduate.

This is a serious competition for both emerging and established artists. Selected artists will receive a $1,000

stipend and will be eligible for the $500 People's Choice Award.

Artists who are 21 or older and have participated in at least three juried shows are eligible to apply.
