“And if you’ve never seen it before,” actor Andrew Varela says, with a laugh, “then what’s wrong with your life?”

What was state-of-the-art by 1986 standards, when the show premiered, now seems old hat. The spectacular centerpiece then — a giant turntable — was used to convey the historic sweep of the story, which is based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel. In 2012, theater technology has evolved to include elaborate video projections and

other visual effects capable of making audiences feel that they’re right in the middle of the French Revolution.

“The whole design of the show has changed significantly,” says Varela, who plays the dogged police inspector Javert. “Instead of a turntable, it’s now an ever-changing display of images projected against the back wall of the stage – from beautiful pastoral scenes to a sequence in the Parisian sewers that will take your breath away.”

Even if you’ve seen the wildly successful Schonberg-Boublil musical version of Les Miserables during its 17-year run on

Broadway or on any number of national tours to Atlanta, tonight’s performance of producer Cameron Mackintosh’s newly reimagined epic promises a new experience.

Les Miserables still epic, but in a brand-new way By Bert OsBOrne

C’est Magnifique

Page 12: April 2012 Les Miserables at the Fox Theatre

The iconic score remains the same. So, too, the famous story of the reluctant hero Jean Valjean, and Javert, his determined pursuer. Varela himself is another constant: He’s played Javert in this incarnation of the show since it first hit the road five years ago.

He played Valjean on Broadway and in earlier tours but admits to preferring the “darker, heavier” role of Javert. “Even as a little kid, I always enjoyed pretending to be Darth Vadar more than I did Luke Skywalker,” he says.

After some 2,000 performances as the undaunted inspector, how hard is it for Varela to keep it feeling fresh – for himself and his audience? Where’s the acting challenge in a character he essentially established years ago?

“As a theater actor, playing the same part over and over again is part of the job,” Varela says. “On the one hand, I’m really thankful just to be working, so it’s easy maintaining my interest and enthusiasm because I love what I do. If you’re bored with your work, then you shouldn’t be doing it at all.

“Yes, I’m playing the same character, but within his specific framework and within the general guidelines of his story, there are myriad opportunities to put different little beats or spins on a scene,” he says. “You can’t change the character from 1 to 10, but you can change him from 1 to 2, to finesse your performance in new and subtle ways.”

This 25th anniversary tour of Les Miserables has kept Varela on the road for more than 18 months now. (He

also has four other tours of the show on his resume.) “Touring is definitely an acquired lifestyle, but one of the benefits is getting to see so much of the country,” he says. “Over the years, I’ve been to every state but two.” The exceptions: Maine and New Mexico.

Another benefit is getting to “drive the tour” on his own, with his wife and manager, Susan. “We’ve been having a blast driving from place to place,” Varela says. “We make a point of getting out every day and doing something or seeing something interesting. That’s one of the ways you make touring more palatable.” On a recent stop in Buffalo, for instance, they took a day trip to Niagara Falls.

Not even a producer of Mackintosh’s caliber could fully re-create onstage such a natural wonder as that. The spectacle of the show might be what has most plainly captivated audiences for the past 25 years. But, as Varela observes, “It’s based on this amazing story, spanning

30 or 40 years of the human experience, and the fact that it’s sung-through, with no spoken dialogue, and because the music itself is so seamless and well-written, it puts Les Miz in the pantheon of great opera, not only great theater.”

That isn’t to say that audiences don’t also connect on a more intimate emotional level. “The story transcends its own time and place,” Varela says. “It’s about the joy and sadness of life, about falling in love and fighting for something bigger than ourselves, about the search for freedom and redemption.

“All of those emotions are the same now as they’ve always been. The only thing that’s changed is the reason we feel them.”

Bert Osborne has written about Atlanta theater for nearly 20 years. Formerly the critic for Creative Loafing and The Sunday Paper, he now reviews for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

ACT ONE

PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNEAfter 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew.

1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MEREight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to monsieur madeleine, has become a factory owner and mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead. The mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter, Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes.

1823, MONTFERMEILCosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris.

1832, PARISNine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognise Valjean until he has gone.

The Thénardiers’ daughter, Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country.

ACT TWOThe students prepare to build the barricade. marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save marius. The next day the rebels are all killed. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to marius and insists he must go away. At marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s “father” is a murderer and as proof produces a ring that he stole from the corpse the night the barricade fell. It is marius’ own ring, and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. He and Cosette go to Valjean where Cosette learns for the first time of her own history before the old man dies.

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. The Fox Archives has over 500 original signed star photos stored in its temperature and humidity controlled Special Collections Room.

When restoration work requires the removal of original brick, finish, or plaster from the building, a part of the original material is saved in Archives for future reference.

The Fox retains fragments of the original fabrics that once covered its historic furniture. These remnants are critical components in recreating reproduction fabrics and patterns.

The Fox Theatre’s poster collection comprises over 1,100 show posters dating back to the 1930s.

In recognition of the Fox Theatre’s contribution towards sales in excess of 500,000 copies, MCA Records presented the Fox with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s One More from the Road gold album.

When the Fox opened in 1929, it housed a projection booth full of state-of-the-art equipment, including a

1928 Brenkert F-7 Master Brenograph projector to project effects, backdrops, and lantern slides featuring lyrics of songs that were popular at the time. The Fox Lantern Slide Collection is comprised of approximately 569 song titles, made of up countless individual glass slides for each song.

Feeling French? You needn’t leave Atlanta By Kenny norton

W hen considering French culture in the South, Atlanta may not be the first place that leaps to

mind. However, ever since Jean Ribault (anyone remember the Six Flags ride), Georgia has been shaped by French influences. As a true international city, it hosts French cultural and heritage events throughout the year, bringing the joie de vivre of Paris a little closer to home.

You can experience French culture in three dimensions through Théâtre du Rêve (pronounced tee-AHH-tre doo rev). The professional theater company, founded in 1996, is the only French-language company in the United States. It brings the culture and language of the Francophone world to Americans, doing bilingual shows and using subtitles or supertitles when necessary. Its education programming goes nationwide.

Join us as we follow Théâtre du Rêve Artistic Director Park Krausen on a tour of the French experience, Atlanta style:

“There are a number of fantastic French restaurants,” she says, singling out a couple of Buckhead bistros. “I think Atmosphere’s food is really authentic with the freshest ingredients,” she says, calling its escargot the city’s best. She also likes the authenticity of Anis Bistro’s cuisine, its cozy atmosphere and great staff.

Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta offers classes and programming about French culture, encouraging the study of the French language and culture by providing French classes along with cultural and artistic programs such as films, speaker, trips and exhibits. You can also catch soccer matches there on Saturdays.

Looking for something festive? The French Consulate in Atlanta does some programming each year and has a celebration of France in Atlanta. The France-Atlanta is a special event, Krausen says, usually held in the fall. The 2012 program will feature a French design exhibition at SCAD.

Each November the French American Chamber presents the annual Beaujolais Nouveau Festival, which celebrates the release of the wine Beaujolais Nouveau and includes tastings of other wines. Each May, the chamber holds the

Passport to France Gala, a celebration of French culture.

Of course Théâtre du Rêve makes Krausen’s list. “We bring the French language (often that of great French and French-language writers) to life on the American stage,” she says. The company recently closed The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, told with puppets and people in French and English. It premiered at TdR a year ago and proved so popular that the company reprised it this winter. Its student matinee performances are the heart of TdR’s education program, Krausen says.

Yet, the most anticipated part of the education programming is just beginning. “We are starting a huge program bringing French language and theater, helping students embrace French language creatively,” Krausen says. “It will have workshops to help kids

create their own theatrical productions using French literature.”

The theater also is working on a new production, Celles d’en haut (The Women From on High), a commission that received its first public performance at a staged reading at the Alliance Theatre in mid-March.

The international production features a Montreal playwright, a Belgian director and actors from Atlanta, Chicago and Quebec. Aiming for a full production in 2013, the theater plans to premiere the play in Atlanta and ultimately tour to Brussels, Montreal and Chicago.

Facing your own mortality has never looked so palpable or startling than at “BODIES ... The Exhibition” at

Atlantic Station. The dim exhibit scatters light across 200 specimens and human bodies that come from medical facilities in China. The bodies and organs were painstakingly dissected, preserved and skillfully arranged for public display.

Curious visitors are greeted by flesh and muscle rippling across human figures in a range of motion and style. The maze of anatomy leads past placards that explain how the body works. Some stops are a fascinating account of the entire nervous system. Others provide fun factoids like “your body grows 40 additional yards of hair every 24 hours.” But complete human body specimens are the main attraction with flashes of artistic touches and detailing.

An athletic body frozen in mid-sprint exposes contracting muscles and taught tendons at work. A hand tightly palms a basketball while eyes fall transfixed on an imaginary hoop in the distance.

“BODIES” houses various themes focusing on skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive and circulatory systems, and the treated body. Visitors stand BO

next to a dismembered circulatory system while learning more from nearby signage. Another station reveals the inner workings of the human anatomy with a body dissected into three vertical sections. A closer step reveals an intimate view of the digestive track zigzagging through a suspended cross section. You can also study the carefully positioned kidneys, stomach, heart and lungs.

The exhibition highlights what our bodies are capable of and sends a message about what we’re doing to them. It will stop the uneasy in their tracks with a hard look at the consequences of poor lifestyle choices. An array of discolored organs and tissues show complications from obesity, excessive alcohol use, habitual smoking and more. A case of discarded cigarette boxes lies between displays of healthy and diseased lungs and sheds light on the stark reality of our decisions.

An explanation of the freeze-dry preservation process is, perhaps, just as interesting as the dissected brains, hearts, tissues and bodies. The medical facilities used polymer preservation to permanently preserve the tissues for an indefinite amount of time. A series of steps involving dissection, replacing water with acetone, treatment in a vacuum chamber and silicone polymer hardening leaves behind a dry and odorless specimen. The individual tissues and organs look like nothing more than components of a science exhibit. But the meticulous re-creation of the face with lips, ears, jaw and eyes leaves the impression that the body simply froze and hardened in midsentence.

The stunning exhibit hopes to cater to all ages and offers children a customized audio guide. Comfort level, and not age, determines who should explore “BODIES,” and not every exhibit is deemed appropriate for all. An ectopic pregnancy gives way to a sign that cautions visitors about what to expect next. Anyone who is uncomfortable with the upcoming subject matter is encouraged to move past the popular fetal development room. Fetuses of all sizes line up in rapid stages of organ and tissue development spanning from mere days to months.

Although tastefully executed and void of the grotesque or macabre, “BODIES ... The Exhibition” is not for the squeamish at heart. To catch a glimpse of what to expect, visit www.bodiestheexhibiton.com.

Things that we take for granted — clean water, abundant food, shelter,

vaccines, schools — are a luxury for kids in developing nations. To prove this point and show Atlantans how they can help, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF will host the UNICEF Experience at Atlanta’s Georgia Public Broadcasting Studios on April 29.

The UNICEF Experience gives visitors information about what it costs to provide education, vaccines, sanitary living conditions and clean drinking water for children in the 157 developing countries that UNICEF helps. On display will be “school-in-a-box” kits, baby scales, early childhood development kits and other relief items, so people can see where their dollars go without having to travel overseas. UNICEF program experts will be on hand to answer questions. And there will be experiential elements, like a water carrying station, so attendees can experience firsthand the daily challenges UNICEF children face overseas.

“I want people to walk away from here knowing that every single day, as we go about our business, 21,000 children die of causes we know how to prevent,” said Caryl M. Stern, president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “We believe that number should be zero. And I want

[people] to walk away knowing they can make that happen.”

The ability to save lives is what prompted the event’s founding co-chair Vern Yip, host of HGTV’s “Deserving Design,” to become a global ambassador for UNICEF. “In the [six years] I’ve been involved, they’ve been successful in getting the number down from 26,000 to 21,000 — so that’s 5,000 kids a day that aren’t dying needlessly,” Yip said.

For more information on the family friendly April 29 event, visit unicefusa.
