Leadership Highlights

Each year the ELCA is interested in how much emphasis churches in the Northwest Washington Synod put on specific programs and activities in the past year. In the Executive Committee meeting we discussed how much emphasis we believe is applied in each of those areas here at KLC. We were pleased to report "worship" and "community service activities" are Kent Lutheran congregation specialties. We also noted some areas where we are not as strong. We continued this discussion in the Council Meeting as part of our activities to goal mapping exercise. At the KLC Leadership Retreat this year we set a goal to "Grow Our Faith and Share The Gospel", and decided on four focus areas: 1 - Intentionally communicate to the community, 2 - Enhance our worship environment and broaden our worship experience, 3 - Provide targeted faith development and growth activities, and 4 - Equip members to share the gospel. At Council this month we discussed activities planned for each committee in 2011 to determine which focus area they supported, and where an activity did not support a focus area, we discussed ways in which we could enhance that activity to help us work toward our goal. It is important to be intentional, rather than just plan activities because we've done them in the past. Council is a board of leaders that represent the KLC standing

committees. Each committee has many activities planned throughout the year, and relies on volunteers from the congregation to keep our

ministries strong. If you have interest In a particular ministry, I hope you will let people know so that we can help you find the best fit for your particular interests and gifts. What's New? Speaking of interests and gifts, we are encouraged by the progress of the organ installation, and if you haven't looked at the web site lately, you can find the latest Chimes is posted there. Adult Sunday School classes are featuring a different parable for 12 weeks. The study materials are excellent. The perspectives are enlightening and thought-provoking. Seasonal Activities: Have you been reading the Lent devotionals distributed by Mission Support? We've been hearing some very positive feedback about these materials. I hope you will have an opportunity to attend the Lent soup suppers and services if you have not done so. Choir is already working on the Good Friday cantata, "Song of the Shadows". If you have never heard this before, I hope you will plan to see it this year. It is a very powerful piece of music and wonderful reminder of Jesus Christ's love and sacrifice for each of us. Council meetings are always open to anyone who would like to attend. They are scheduled the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Hunt (Council President)

Lenten Season: God’s Gift To Us April 3 John 9:1-41 April 10 John 11:1-45 April 17 Matthew 26:30-36 EASTER: April 24 Matthew 28:1-10

Themes & Texts

Make the Desert Bloom! We thank the The KLC Arts Committee for turning our narthex and sanctuary into a barren desert, causing us to reflect on the meaning of the Season of Lent. If you have not yet worshipped during Lent, plan to encounter a setting with three rugged crosses (cut from our Christmas trees) set among stones, sand and leafless vegetation in the narthex. As you enter the sanctuary, no baptismal waters stand ready. No flowers adorn the altar; rather, rough burlap and stone are at the foot of the cross. Thankfully, the Season of Lent lasts just a few weeks! With Easter morning, fresh water will brim the baptismal font. Symbols of new life will return. We invite you to help us transform the desert with life in the vivid colors of spring by sharing your plants and bouquets on Easter morning! Flowers may be brought to the church on Saturday, April 23rd (open all day for the Prayer Vigil) and left on the designated table in the fellowship hall where they will safely await Easter services. Or, you may bring them before either 8:30 or 11:00 service on Easter Sunday and take them with you as you leave. Flowers may also be picked up during office hours in the church office Tuesday-Friday.

Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday, April 21st, serves as a time to reflect on events

of Jesus’ final hours before His crucifixion and resurrection. This

Taize based service is at 7:00 p.m. For those who would like to

attend this service but need a ride, please call the church office to

make arrangements.

Sudanese Worship A Sudanese Worship Service will be on Sunday, April 17th at 1pm in the white building. The services are conducted in Nuer and anyone is welcome to attend.

“Song of the Shadows” is a service of hauntingly beautiful music, sung by our Festival Choir, and dramatic readings which lead worshippers to reflect on Jesus’ great sacrifice for us. Honor Him on His path to the grave by adding your presence to this service. The prayer vigil will begin immediately after the Good Friday service. (See related article.) We invite you to sign up to pray and/or serve as hosts during specific time slots, but remember our sanctuary is open to everyone throughout the entire prayer vigil. Stop by and spend a few minutes at the prayer stations. Come alone or bring the entire family.

Pastor Jane

At the Leadership Retreat in February Kent Lutheran leaders set forward a framework, a goal, by which all our efforts and activities would be assessed in 2011: Grow our Faith and Share the Gospel. Does that sound difficult? It might be if it was dependent on our efforts. But this is God’s job - to grow our faith and share the gospel. The gospel – “good news” – is spoken by angels (Luke 2), taught by Jesus (Matthew 4) lavished on us by God the Father (Ephesians 1), proclaimed by the disciples (Acts 2), and baptized in to us by the Holy Spirit (Mark 1). We live daily in the “good news” of God’s love. To share the gospel is simply to share what we live.

The third weekend in May four adults took 19 youth on retreat to Decatur Island (one of the San Juan Islands). Besides thoroughly enjoying the surrounding nature, we appreciated the community of each other and practiced sharing the gospel. Several times youth were in small groups experiencing easy discussion about a Bible text. We worshipped with praise and we shared in prayer for our loved ones.

One afternoon we were playing on a rocky beach. Someone commented on all the rock shapes and I added that God did a good job in creation. A youth spoke up and just “that’s just like people – all of us different.” I asked, “And what’s the Jesus’ word about that?” Quickly one youth answered, “That God loves us all no matter what.” Another youth showed me a rock shaped like a baseball and I suggested it “symbolized times in life when our “edges” were smooth. However, lots of times we have “rough” edges.” Rapidly several rocks were found that had

rough edges. Again I asked, “And what’s the Jesus word about that?” Immediately youth responded, “That God loves us even when we have rough edges – and in fact helps smooth our edges.”

That’s how easy it was for our youth to share the gospel. It will be that easy for you. Let God’s good news flow right on through you.

If you would like assistance our KLC Outreach Team will be finding ways to help you share the gospel. For instance, on April 10 you will be offered a method for inviting friends and neighbors to Holy Week worships. Later in the month the Outreach Team will be selling Mother’s Day cards ($5) with meaningful script and a CD with ten “good news” songs.

Your sharing of the gospel will be in your style – from your experience of living the good news - and from your heart and soul. Your sharing will be a gift to be re-ceived by another’s heart and soul.

Here’s a “good news” prayer from one of our youth. I use it to share the gospel so that this day your heart and soul will again embrace the good news of God’s love:

Wassup, Jesus, how you doing? Hey guess

what? I love you so much. You are the best

gift that ever happened to me. You live to

die and give us everything, Lord. Your love

is so amazing and I would like to thank you.

Sabbatical PlansSabbatical PlansSabbatical PlansSabbatical Plans

Plans are continuing for Journey of Adventure: Faith in the midst of Community, a 2012 sabbatical for Pastor Jane. Since her salary will continue during the sabbatical, we hope to obtain a grant to fund the planned travel and a contracted pastor’s time. A team of grant writers, including Cindi Bentz, Emily Bumpous, Joann Kildow, Bill Naslund, and Barbara Strom, is at work on a clergy renewal grant from the Lilly Endowment. Even if Kent Lutheran is not awarded a grant, it’s past time for her sabbatical respite.

During the sabbatical, Pastor Jane plans to renew through challenge, discovery and adventure. She will visit some of Europe’s faith communities and on the journey, re-discover God’s creation and people. A road trip is also

planned, this one with her husband, Fergus, visiting western U.S. Lutheran congregations similar to Kent Lutheran demographically and examining their relationship between church and their community.

We expect these adventures will renew Pastor Jane’s faith and ministry and also be an opportunity for the congregation to grow stronger and deeper in faith as we step into and use our gifts.

KLC Mutual Ministry Committee: Cindi Bentz, Emily Bumpous, and Joann Kildow.

We know that Jesus spoke to his disciples through parables. And we know that the parables deal with people and life and everyday events. But do we know how those lessons for living apply to our own lives? We will take a fresh look at some of Jesus’ lessons for the disciples and for us with the book “Twelve Parables of Jesus.” The class will be led by various members of the KLC family, each of whom will choose a parable from the twelve collected in the book. All adults are welcome to join us in the library at 10:00 on Sunday mornings beginning on March 6th.

If you have discerned that your child is ready for Holy Communion, or if your child has been receiving the elements but has not yet received instruction, Pastor Jane is available to do an instructional visit with your child(ren) in your home or to meet with you at church. If you desire this instruction or have questions, talk with P. Jane.

Maundy Thursday is April 21st. ‘Maundy’ comes from a Latin word that means commandment. On this special day, Jesus game his disciples a new commandment. Use the key below to figure out Jesus’ new commandment.

April 17th is Palm Sunday, a festival day. It is also the first day of Holy Week, the last week of Jesus’ life. At KLC on Palm Sunday, you will be able to wave a palm branch and parade into church.

Preparations have begun for the Vigil prayer stations, and the sign up board for praying and hosting times will be available in the Narthex for the next few weeks. If you have participated in prior years or are thinking about it this year, the Vigil will be ready once again, starting right after the Good Friday worship and continuing around the clock until Easter morning. To offer a sense of what it is about, here are thoughts and reflections from a few people who have participated in prior Vigils. In the business of life, it is easy to push prayer into a small rushed corner. The KLC Easter Prayer Vigil has been a great opportunity for me to dedicate an hour entirely to God without any distraction or interruption. - Rob Nelson Each year I look forward to being a part of the 3-day prayer vigil. Upon entering the candle-lit sanctuary at my designated time and moving from prayer station to prayer station, I have a sense of waiting… and of wondering what those three days must have been like for the first followers of Jesus. This time and place set apart for lifting up prayers, joined with faithful others, deepens the anticipation of wor-ship on Easter Sunday. - Carolyn Nirk

Insights on the Easter Prayer Vigil

If you have never been in a church, all alone, and prayed (really prayed) you have something to look forward to. I have been doing this for several years and the satisfaction and peace one receives is incredible! In fact, the whole Easter experience is awesome. Come to the Maundy Thursday Service, the Good Friday Service, take part in the Prayer Vigil, and come to the Service of Jubilance on Easter Sunday morning. The Lord will Love it, and you will too. There is no other experience like it!!! - June Beal Being a Host for the Easter Prayer Vigil presents a peaceful time for prayer, meditation, reflection and study. Hosts are the Welcomers for Praying people coming to the door (the door is kept locked for security), and have the rest of their time to ponder and pray. The time passes quietly and, surprisingly, all too quickly. I leave feeling ready and expectant for the coming announcement of Jesus’ resurrection. - Clayton Anderson Please consider this event. It can be a great blessing in our Spirit filled lives.

Kent Lutheran has had a goal for several years to give 10% of our budget to benevolences. Gift giving to our local benevolences is crucial in the current economic climate. Not everyone at KLC may be familiar with the local organizations we support, what they do and how much we seek to contribute to each of them. The list is far reaching: Holden Village , H.O.M.E, Kent Community Service Center , Kent Community Supper, Compass Housing Alliance (the new organization formed by the merger of LATCH and The Compass Center), Lutheran Social Services and Luther’s Table. Holden Village is a center for renewal, a Lutheran ministry welcoming all people into the wilderness to be called, equipped and sent by God. Thousands of visitors come to Holden each year to experience learning, worship, hilarity and renewal. Hospitality is at the center of Holden's mission. H.O.M.E. is the Kent area men’s homeless shelter. The shelter rotates between local churches spending one month at a time. They seek to help the men in the program with getting back on their feet and into permanent housing. Kent Community Service Center operates the local food bank and offers emergency assistance to those in need. Kent Community Supper offers a great meal every Monday night to those in need in the community. The meal is served in KLC’s fellowship hall. The Compass Center was founded in 1920 when a remarkable couple from Sweden (Reverend and Mrs. Alva Karlstrom) began a little mission in Seattle – part chapel, part employment agency, part reading room, part language school, part soup kitchen, part crash-pad for the stranded. Over the years, the face of homelessness has continued to change, and the Compass

Center adjusted and expanded accordingly. By the end of 2009, the Compass Center was operating day services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing, and family shelter at 19 locations around the Seattle Area. LATCH was incorporated as a non-profit housing development organization by four Lutheran churches in 1990. At the time of the merger, LATCH had 36 member congregations and owned and operated 205 apartments, which provide stable, affordable homes to nearly 500 people, half of whom are children. In 2009, LATCH and The Compass Center began the process of merging into one comprehensive housing and services agency. Compass Housing Alliance was officially born on January 1, 2010 . Compass Housing Alliance is where Lent offering has being designated to go. Lutheran Social Services Northwest is a nonprofit human services agency serving communities throughout Washington , Oregon and Idaho . They provide a wide variety of services to adults, adolescents, children, families, schools, businesses, congregations, neighborhoods and communities. Each year they serve more than 120,000 people of all ages, cultures and faith. Luther’s Table is a new ministry of the ELCA, and it looks like nothing you’ve ever seen before. A coffee shop/bakery by day, and a music venue/pub by night. Luther’s Table is built around the idea that community, trust, conversation, and faith are found around the dinner table. KlC’s goal for 2011 is to give 2,000.00 to Compass Housing Alliance and 1,000.00 to each of the other very worthy organizations.

On March 11, one of the largest earthquakes in history with a magnitude of 9.0 struck Japan near the town of Sendai. The earthquake triggered 30-foot tsunami waves, devastating Japan’s coastal areas, and sent tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean. The ELCA is working very closely with the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Lutheran World Federation, and Church World Service in providing direct assistance to survivors of this disaster. Please continue to pray for the people of Japan and for our companion church the JELC, as they face dangers relating to the damaged nuclear facilities and the massive humanitarian crisis resulting from the earthquake and tsunami. Those who give to shared mission support and ELCA World Hunger are already helping to fund the ongoing work in Japan and the deployment of mission personnel through ELCA Global Mission. The ELCA invites gifts to ELCA Disaster Response in order to continue its work in Japan and surrounding region. For more information, go to www.elca.org and click on ‘Our Faith in Action’ then ‘Responding to the World’.

Through February income is slightly above the budget for the year, and expenses are below the budget. The top section of the Financial Statement Analysis Report printed on the other side of this page provides the detail. This is good news, but we are very early in the year. Traditionally the first third and the last third of the year have stronger income than the middle third (summer). We are paying our bills and keeping our commitments (like cash benevolences) for the year from current income. Our aged payables (over 30 old), near the bottom of the Analysis Report, are all internal “loans” to ourselves. KLC has several savings accounts that hold funds for specific pur-poses, and with Council’s approval we periodically use these funds to help balance our cash flow. A good example is our Memorial Account which holds funds donated in memory of someone until the Memorial Committee, working with the family, uses the funds. Recently a lot of the Memorial Funds have been directed to the Organ Replacement Fund, another of our “savings accounts”. We currently “owe” nothing to the Memorial Fund and approximately $3,500 to the Organ Replacement Fund. With our pending next generation pipe organ installation Mission Support Committee is working to get these funds repaid. The Cash Position lines near the bottom of the Analysis Report show our total outstanding commitments, including loans to ourselves. Cash position thru February is an improvement over last year at this time. We are slowly paying ourselves back, and this is also good news. Recently we had a change in one of our financial staff positions. Kathy Nixon is our new Financial Secretary. Monne Ironside, who was our Financial Secretary for many years “retired” at year end. The transition from Monne to Kathy is going well, and

Kathy can answer your donation questions. Thank you Monne for your years of service and thank you Kathy for taking on this important role. Several years ago Mission Support Committee introduced the Simply Giving program, sponsored by Thrivent and executed by VANCO. Simply Giving allows you to make your donations to KLC electronically, from your bank account to KLC’s bank account. Mission Support introduced this service in response to member requests for electronic giving and to also help level out KLC’s cash flow, especially during the summer months. This service has proven to be straightforward and very reliable, with more than ten of our families currently taking advantage of this service. You choose the frequency and the amount and your donation automatically happens, even when you are on vacation! Ron Kleven (Mission Support Committee) administers this program and can answer your questions and then sign you up. Mission Support Committee and FAB are also looking at other means of electronic giving, including the possibility of accepting debit and credit card donations. If you are interested, or have questions or concerns, please talk with a member of Mission Support or someone on Council. We are looking at including this capability in our website upgrade, both for general giving and to support giving to specific ministries or projects. This could help us fund projects that also benefit the community with money donated from outside KLC. Examples of this are operation and maintenance of the shower trailer and the cold weather shelter. Future Organ upgrades are also a possibility. Electronic giving is causing us to change how we account for our income, so it is important we understand your interest in this area.
