NSERC staff meets companies during Manitoba Manufacturing Week

More than 200 Manitoba high school students experienced who they could become when they enter the job market as they designed, developed, assembled and tested their way through the hands-on manufacturing simulation of a mini hovercraft. “It was a good, fun educational tour” expressed a student from Elmwood High School. A Senior 4 student from Landmark Collegiate agreed: “It was cool and we learned a lot!”

Students performed some of the basic technical and innovative tasks involved in manufacturing-based careers; 3D CAD, vacuum forming, electronics, assembly and fabrication. Students from Shevchenko school enjoyed the “hands-on opportunity it gave”, and one student from Westwood Collegiate reminded us how cool manufacturing is: “it was really cool to try different activities such as vacuum forming and the 3D modeling”. All students agree: they’ll be back next year!

OUR MISSION

Enable Manitoba’s manufacturers and exporters to excel and grow in domestic and global markets.

Proclamation and TourThe week’s activities were launched March 21, 2011 at Magellan Aerospace with an official Manufacturing Week Proclamation by Minister of Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Peter Bjornson. Guests were also treated to a tour of the Magellan plant by Don Boitson, the company’s Vice-President and General Manager. Highlights included a look at the new CNC equipment used to manufacture F-35 fighter jets as part of Canada’s Joint Strike Fighter project.

ConferenceThe 2011 Manufacturing & Trade Conference was a day of networking and insightful presentations. Over 250 industry members from across manufacturing and supporting sectors enjoyed clever and thought-provoking ideas from keynote speakers Dr. Earl Fry, Nicholas Parker and Jim Harris. Conference attendees were delighted with exceptional presentations by Manitoba’s own Paul Soubry, Larry Dyck and Gavin Rich who engaged audiences in topics related to employee engagement, continuous improvement and competing in today’s business environment.

Gala AwardsThe 2011 Gala Awards Dinner was truly a night of celebration as over 500 delegates and VIPs honoured this year’s CME Award Recipients. The evening’s program commenced with greetings from Honourable Minister Bjornson, Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade, CME President Jayson Myers and Reynold Martens, Chair of the CME Manitoba Board. Also in attendance were Deputy Ministers: Hugh Eliasson, Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade; John Clarkson, Innovation, Energy and Mines, and Dean Emeritus of the Asper School of Business Jerry Gray. Award recipients for the evening included: Peter Nygård, Hall of Fame Inductee; IMRIS, Emerging Award; Magellan Aerospace, Export Award; and, Albert Abram (A.A.) DeFehr, Pioneer Award (awarded posthumously).

CME would like to extend a special thanks to all of the 2011 Manufacturing Week partners and sponsors for their continued support in making Manufacturing Week an outstanding success.

“Fall is our busiest time of year and that’s when we run at maximum capacity. The issue was that we had more orders than we were capable of filling. We needed to find a way to meet the demand,” recalls Currie.

Adapting a concept he had heard about at a conference, the team decided to track plant results on an hourly basis on a production board to make the results more visible. Then, to overcome any bottlenecks that could prevent them from meeting their goal, they formed a huddle or group that represented all functional areas of the operation and started meeting twice daily.

“Our huddle is comprised of six to eight people from management, the front line, key operators and the leads from the respective manufacturing areas. When we meet, we review the tonnage produced versus our target and talk about any issues. When you have a variety of backgrounds and expertise involved – from maintenance to warehouse workers – it’s easy to determine who is in the best position to solve a problem and work quickly to resolve it. Sometimes problems are related to communications. Under this system staff can weigh in and clear it up immediately”, adds Currie.

Making the changes required to meet a new target wasn’t easy. “This new target was a real stretch when everybody already felt that we were working at maximum capacity. It created some tension at first, but with everyone in the room asking the tough questions, it helped keep us realistic.”

The new approach also revealed some issues related to plant equipment. Says Currie, “If we hadn’t started the huddle, we might not have identified a couple of minor equipment issues. We ended up making a minimal investment and it has made a big difference. Ultimately that investment paid off in just three days.”

Today, the new stretch goal is ‘business as usual’ and the plant has become adept at meeting and sometimes exceeding it. Since its implementation last October, the Portage la Prairie plant has improved production by 27 tonnes per day, a 10% increase that translates into over one million dollars in production opportunity.

But the benefits extend far beyond the bottom line. Notes Currie, “It’s been great for relationships – people feel like they are being heard and understood. It’s created a bridge between front line employees and supervisors and, of course, we’re now able to meet increased customer demand.”
