IN THE HEAT WITH THE TAYLOR FIRE DEPARTMENT

Well, March has been busy with the Village on a Diet show coming to and end and Taylor Fire Department Calendar sales! Thank you for your support Taylor! And, for that matter, Thank You Canada!! We have mailed calendars to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and all over British Columbia. Our first 200 calendars were sold within the first week and we had to order more. What a pleasant surprise! So, if you still need a calendar, have no fear, we have lots to sell. Just, come into the District Office, fill in your order form and pick up your calendar. For those out of town folks, order forms can be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to the District Office, Attention: Sadie (see order form for contact information). Remember, net proceeds from our calendar sales are going to the Burn Unit at BC Children’s Hospital!! Thanks again to Village on a Diet for helping us with our calendar. Training, training and more training. Taylor hosted an Air Brakes Course in March and is looking forward to hosting other training throughout the year. So far, we will be holding a Display Fireworks course, and are looking at a number of Driver Training courses for the spring. With new members on the team we need to make sure everyone is up to speed. We are also looking forward to Spring! Looking outside and seeing all that snow makes a person wonder if Spring really is just around the corner! Can you believe it was snowing on the first day of Spring? However, before we know it, the sun is going to come out in full force and the melt will begin. Roads will become messy and it is very important to keep your window washer fluid topped up on your vehicle. Those windows need to be clean to see through and it makes driving soooo much easier! As we wait for spring to come the Fire Department is starting to think about things to come like Emergency Preparedness Week and our Mother’s Day Breakfast. Stay tuned to learn more in the coming months.

Building Permits

If you are planning a construction project or renovation this summer, you may need to obtain a Building Permit prior to commencing any work on the project.

Section 2.2 of Building Bylaw No. 391, 1991 states; “no person shall construct or authorize the construction of any building or structure or part thereof unless a permit for the work has first been issued by the Building Inspector.”

Some of the projects that do not require a Building Permit are: replacing your asphalt shingles, replacing a door or window with one of the same size as the original, and installing new siding.

If you are altering any plumbing, making any structural changes, or building a deck or new structure, you will be required to obtain a Building Permit prior to beginning any work.

If you are not sure whether or not you will need a permit, you can contact the District Office at 250-789-3392 to make an appointment with the Building Inspector. A Building Permit application can be picked up at the municipal office from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Backflow Preventer Reminder

Although the Public Works Department does its best to ensure that the municipal systems (such as sewage disposal and water supply) are operating properly, unexpected problems can arise For example, supposing a sewer main became plugged in the night and sewage backed up into adjacent buildings. Or during a heavy rainstorm, a ditch was overloaded and flooded a basement.

Each property owner within the District is required by bylaw to have a back flow preventer on their sanitary sewer lines, and ensure that they are regularly maintained and working properly.

Due to the fact that many incidents are recognized as being outside of the control of the District, there is a provision in the Community Charter, that provides immunity for all the municipalities against any claim for damages that may arise, directly or indirectly, as a result of the breakdown or malfunction of:

A sewer system,

A water or drainage facility or system, or

A dike or a road.

According, owners and occupiers of property are strongly advised to:

Have their back flow preventer checked annually; and

Review their property insurance policies with their brokers and confirm that coverage is provided for the kinds of

incidents mentioned above

The Step of Faith

It‟s been said that if you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat. That statement speaks a lot about faith. It takes faith to climb out of the safety of our boats and walk with God, trusting Him. And, God calls us to a life of faith that will often require us to leave the safety, security and comfort of our current situation and follow Him. What we have to remember is that the life to which He is calling us is far greater than the state in which we find ourselves now. Walking on water is far greater than sitting in a boat. So, the question we need to ask ourselves is this; “What boat am I currently sitting in?” Where in this world are you looking to for security, safety and assurance? Who or what are you placing your faith in? Where do you run to when you‟re afraid, anxious, or angry? Maybe your boat is your financial status, and you find peace in knowing how much you have. Or maybe your boat is some habit or addiction that you run to for escape from the pressures of life. Your boat could even be a job that makes you feel important and gives you a pur-pose. Now, obviously there is nothing wrong with having jobs, hobbies and money. But, if we are placing our hope, assurance and faith in those things they have become gods to us. And, the Living God is calling us to stop trusting in those things. If we are sitting in the boat rather than placing our hope and trust in the Lord Jesus, we need to step out in faith and get out of the boat and follow Jesus. God‟s been teaching me a lot personally about faith over the past year. My wife Corinne and I are coming into a time of transition in our lives where I will no longer be on staff at Peace Community Church. My job at the church and my role as associate pastor were becoming my boat, and I needed to step out and find out what God has for me next. I‟m still waiting to find that out, but I know it will be great because it will be what God wants. And, in this process of change and waiting and praying, my faith is being stretched and tested and worked, and I think it‟s getting stronger. I guess anytime something is exercised, it naturally grows stronger. So, if I can leave a parting challenge with you, it‟s this from the book of Proverbs; “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” That‟s found in Proverbs chapter three, verses five and six. I memorized that when I was a child, and it‟s amazing how poignant it has been throughout my life. I pray that you will trust the Lord enough to get out of the boat. And, I pray that He will make your paths straight as you place all of your trust in Him.

God bless!

Chris Millington

Taylor Tornadoes Update! The minor hockey season has come to an end in Taylor. For some (the parents) it is with a sigh of relief, for

others (the children) it is a large disappointment! The weekends are no longer strictly for the children and

we (the parents) regain some semblance of control over our lives once again. It is a sure sign of changing

seasons – now all we need is for the weather to cooperate!

By all accounts, the season was a great success. If success is measured in fun, then it was a runaway,

slam dunk! It concluded with a 4 on 4 tournament and pizza party on the March 12 – 13 weekend. This

tournament brings all the teams together in a display of comradeship that speaks volumes about Taylor.

Each 4 on 4 team was made up of players from pre-novice, novice, atoms and Pee Wee, with the rules

structured to maximize the involvement of all players – no matter what your size or skill level. Kudos to the

tournament and pizza party organizers for such excellent functions!

If your children have not experienced the comradeship of team sports in Taylor, we would invite you

to ensure that you register them next year. If the display put on by the Can Skate hockey players at the

Peace Passage Figure Skating Club is an indication of what might be moving into the ranks ofminor hockey

next year, our success is assured. We would invite you to become a part of the growing hockey movement

in Taylor. By all accounts, we might even have 2 novice teams next year because of this growing interest.

The reality is that we welcome everyone! More on the Next Page........

If you are worried about the commitment it takes to get them to the games, let us assure you that the

comradeship extends to the parents as well – as everyone is willing to pitch in and help each other when

necessary!

But I would be remiss if I didn‟t describe some of the action before the final four on four tournament! Our

pre-novice team (which is considered the foundation or building block of your minor hockey program)

competed in two tournaments to wind up their competitive season - the Fort St. John and Dawson

Creek Tournaments. To say they carried on with their winning ways would be an understatement.

In the Fort St. John Tournament, Taylor went undefeated. They started with an exciting 4-2 win over

Dawson Creek Blue Thunder and finished with identical 8-4 wins over the Fort St. John Twilight and

Windsor Plywood teams.

In the Dawson Creek Tournament, it was a little different – but a 2 and 2 record saw Taylor bring home

the third place trophy. A nice bit of hardware to end the „competitive season‟ for the guys and gals as pre

-novice tournaments are rarely structured to have finishing „placements.‟

In the round robin, the tournament started of with a bit of shock and awe as Taylor lost to Tumbler Ridge

7 to 5. An unexpected turn of events as the last time the Taylor team played them it was a 14–0 victory.

Kudos must be give to the Tumbler Ridge team for all their hard work, as the level of improvement in

such a short period of time was astounding.

Taylor rebounded in the next game to beat Dawson Creek Blue Thunder leaving all three teams in the

round robin with a 1-1 record. Fortunately for us, we were awarded second place on goal differential tie

breaker and were able to move with Dawson Creek to the cross over.

As the second place team, we were challenged to take on the 1st place team of the other round robin –

the powerhouse that is Chetwynd, who are undefeated for the year! But our guys and gals were up to the

challenge and gave us perhaps the best game of the year in a losing effort. It was magnificent though,

no one really gave them a chance – except themselves. They hustled all game long, shut down the

Chetwynd team and took a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period behind the (as usual) stellar goaltending of Kagen

Wollen. They held the lead until the 8 minute mark and were pressing for another goal when the puck

bounced the wrong way and a 2 man breakaway resulted in the tying goal. Chetwynd then went on to

win 5-3.

Great job Chetwynd – but we are looking forward to challenging you again next year!

With the loss, we were relegated to the 3rd place game where we once again played Dawson Creek Blue

Thunder with the same result as the first game. Congratulations to all the players – the level of hard work

and commitment they demonstrated for 5 and 6 year olds was truly admirable! But, to be honest, it was

no different than the attitude displayed by all Taylor Teams!
