April 2011 APRIL 2011 NO. 4 AMERICAN CORNER NICARAGUA Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States during 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated 1 million trees were planted that day. Many countries now observe a similar holiday. Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on climate and suitable planting season. Birdsey Northrop of Connecticut was responsible for globalizing it when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Villa- ge Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrup the Chairman of the committee to cam- paign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada and Europe. [1] Arbor Day reached its height of popularity on its 125th anniversary in 1997, when David J. Wright, noticed that a Nebraska non profit called the National Arbor Day Foundation had taken the name of the holiday and commercialized it for their own use as a trademark for their publication "Arbor Day," so he countered their efforts, launched a website, and trademarked it for "public use celebrations" and defended the matter in a federal district court in the United States [2] to insure it was judged as property of the public domain, the case was settled in October 1999. Today as a result of Wright's efforts anyone can use the term Arbor Day and anyone can hold their own Arbor Day celebration. Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it inter- national in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. [1][2] Earth Day is now coor- dinated globally by the Earth Day Network, [3] and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. [4] Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.
