“Integrity: A Virtue”At our school we ask the students to think

about and try and apply to their lives eight core virtues: Integrity, Courtesy, Self-Control, Modesty, Indomitable Spirit, Compassion, Perseverance and Gratitude.

Our monthly theme this month was, “I Can Listen to My Parents!”

We have “matt chats” before class. When an instructor asked a few of our younger students why it was important to listen to their parents, the answer was, “So I won’t get in trouble!”

The instructor followed up. “What if your mom told you not to eat a cookie

before dinner and you knew you could sneak one out of the cookie jar and not get caught. Would you do it?”

Little faces brightened. A few kids smiled. There was a lot of thinking going on. The teacher spoke about the need to be honest and sincere, to do what’s right even if no one is looking. He told the class he had a big word for that – integrity.

Our older students weren’t asked about cookies but about what they would do if they saw someone being bullied…

It’s important to try and do what’s right and be motivated in this choice not by fear of punishment

but out of respect for others. It’s a goal worth striving for – a life of integrity.

All my best, Alan Kessler

Don’t do it for the gas mileage.

During the twentieth century, it became commonplace to consider individual decades as historical entities where trends, styles, and attitudes defined us. In the

first decade of the 1800’s, the US doubled in size with the Louisiana purchase. In the 1960’s, the first astronaut landed on the moon. The 1990’s saw a booming economy while the 2000’s saw a huge jump in internet usage.

I’ve been a member of the BillericaColonial Minute Men for many years. I’vebeen Captain of the organization for thelast 5 years. As I became more involvedwith BCMM and discovered the richhistory Billerica had in the AmericanRevolutionary War, I wondered why therewasn’taminutemanstatueonthecommon.Concord and Lexington each has one andnowIunderstandBedfordhasone.

About two years ago Richard Mackay,BCMM’sQuartermasterandBoardMemberof the Billerica Historical Society, askedus to critique a Line of March road sign, commemoratingthemarchtoConcord, thatthesocietyhadcommissioned.

Wenoticedthattheminutemandepictedon the sign was, in fact, the Concordminuteman. We decided to take this as anopportunitytodesignan“original”Billericaminuteman logo, in deed, a minutemancharacterwhowouldrepresenttheTownofBillerica.

We started with BCMM’s logo at thetime,whichwasdesignedbyGrecoGraphics16 years ago andpresented to theBillericaColonialMinuteMen.

Shane Clarke, a local artist, added legstothecharacter.Mr.Mackaypresentedtheartwork to Sign Effects, who worked withMr. Mackay and the Historical Society on

the design of the road sign and the resultis the signyousee installedalongConcordRoadtoday.TheBillericaHistoricalSocietydecided to use only the upper torso of thelogo.Itmakesforaveryuniqueroadsign.

Thefullfigurelogo, completewithlegs, has been adopted by the Billerica ColonialMinuteMenastheirlogo.Asthischaracterevolved and legs were added, I saw theMinuteman statue Ihadenvisionedon thecommon.

At the annual meeting of the BillericaHistoricalSocietyandlaterattheLionsClub,Ispokeandsharedmydreamofan“original”BillericaMinutemanStatueonthecommon. This generated some interest so I foundedtheBillericaMinutemanStatueAssociation.MymissionistoraisethefundstocastandinstallaMinutemanStatueonthecommonin the town of Billerica.
