Community Theatre A play reading group will begin in April, with an aim of providing a monthly social event for people who like plays. They will give a chance to get together over a drink, read all or parts of some of the best plays around and have a chat about them. You don't have to read if you come along though: you can just listen if you like. Some are p lays which might be put on in Tideswell, some are unlikely, and some would never be done here ! While the idea is to read the plays you want, those sug-gested so far include Noises Off, Little Voice, The Ghost Train, Bouncers, The Weir, Art, The Birthday Party...even Waiting for Godot ! But you choose which get to be read. The first will be Flare Path by Terrence Rattigan, a story about fighter pilots in the Battle of Briton, at the Youth Club 7.15pm for 7.30pm 9th April - all welcome, refreshments provided; the plays for the next two months readings will be decided then too. For more information please phone Nick Brelsford on 871684 or email [email protected] or the email address below. Soon the visiting professional productions will be chosen for the coming seasons. So far three plays have been brought to Tideswell and were very popular: more will come this year. If you want informat ion about plays being put on in the village, or know the type of entertainment you'd like to see (not just plays), please phone 871063 or email [email protected] Gerard Rogers
Photographs Wanted!
After some consideration we have decided to produce a follow up to “The Spirit of Tides well”. If you have any ideas of subjects and people you think should be included, we would like to hear from you. (We are aware we missed out on some notable local people in the first book) We have at least a hundred more interesting photographs that are worth publishing, but we need as many again for a new book. If you have any photographs/snaps, which you think would be suitable for publi-cation, and you would like to give us permission to copy would you please contact Paul Black on 871482 or Tony Hill on 871519. They can usually be copied at Hills’n’Dales while you wai t. Many Thanks, Paul Black and Tony Hill

Village Plan for Litton, Cressbrook and Litton Mill
∗ Do you live in Litton, Cressbrook or Litton Mill? ∗ Have you got ideas about what you want to see happen in your village
now and in the future? ∗ Do you like certain things about where you live but wish some things
could change? ∗ Have you got a good idea for something that would benefit you and your
family, your friends and your neighbours but are unsure about how to take it forward?
∗ Do you want help with fundraising for a Parish Group or for a Parish idea?
If so, please come to Litton Village Hall on Saturday 5th April from 2-4 p.m.

Peace Vigil in Tideswell.
On Sunday 16th March the world witnessed a “rolling” Peace Vig il – starting in New Zealand at 7pm their time, people gathered together to light can-dles to express their wishes and hopes for peace to prevail. So, as the world turned and darkness fell in
each time zone, like a Mexican wave across our planet some s mall g limmers of light shone out. It was not to pass Tideswell by – though the gathering was small, those present felt that they were joined in spirit to thousands of people in dozens of coun-tries, all from different races, faiths and political allegiances, but with one common humanity, and a wish to see our problems resolved without resource to violence to-wards other humans. At 7 pm in the pot market a small group gathered to light their candles. One reason the gathering was so small is that it was an impromptu affair. Many other people would have joined but did not find out about it in time. If you want further in formation on peaceful antiwar protest go to www.sheffieldagainstwar.org.uk or [email protected]. Chesterfield activ ists can be contacted on 01246 203552. You can view photos of the vigils around the world – (Tideswell’s in there too ! ) if you find [email protected]

The March Lecture. Dave Axon on Birchover I logged onto www.bichovervillage.co.uk and saw what Dave Axon had been telling us. Well if little Birchover can produce so much material, what can Tideswell do !!!!!!!!!!!Dave has a wonderful relaxed manner and the stresses of building a web site evaporated as he talked. He has inspired us to start. Next meeting on Thursday 10 April. Ken Smith, senior archaeologist to the Peak Park will talk on the Landscape of the Peak and introduce some of the scenery we shall see on Brian Rich’s tour. The Tour of Sheffield postponed from last year starts at 6.15 prompt on 8 May and Settlements, Scenery and Tracks on 12 June with Brian Rich in the helm. There may be a seat or two left, Elaine has the bookings – phone 871468. The NEWSLETTER No 2 will appear for the first meeting on Nov 13 and --- OH Boy !!! we are putting together a superb programme for 2003/4 Eric Heaf

from any other club, pub, other organisation or even individuals.
Teams will consist of 4 players, of which only 2 r egular bowlers will be allowed.
Entry fee £4 per team
£20 prize and trophy to winning team
The exact format of the competiti on will depend upon the number of entries but
play will be in pairs (l regular + 1 novice) Everyone should have three games against three di ffer ent
coupl es.
The overall winners will be the team with the best aggregate points difference from all of their games.
Refreshments will be on sal e.
Tideswell Bowling Club As you read this our quite successful indoor season will be over and our outdoor season will have begun. Old and
new members will be made most welcome, the only requirements being a flat pair of shoes and a sense of humour.
Juniors A coaching session will be held on Saturday mornings (weather permitting) for any interested girl or boy twelve
years old and upwards, commencing 10th May 10.30 am until 12 for any youngster willing to give it a go. The
charge for each session is only 50p and balls will be provided. Flat shoes or trainers with a light tread are essen-
tial. Come on you youngsters prove it’s not an old persons game! You will probably enjoy it! Why not ask ‘Wazuk’
Turner what he thinks?
Pen Portrait This month’s personality is – wait for it – concentrate – Gisela Emilie Meta Adelheid Albertime Teeney. Apparently
the vicar who married Gisela and Leo had a nervous breakdown, as did the registrar. The passport and driving
licence people weren’t too happy either. I think you will agree though, that it’s a lovely name for a lovely lady.
Gisela was born in Oker/Harz in Germany and is happily married (well most of the time) to one of our star bowlers,
Leo. They have lived in England for 48 years moving to Tideswell two years ago. They have three ‘children’
Andrew-Eckhard, Jacqueline (yes, the famous one up at the school) and Laurence-Leo, five grandchildren and two
great grandchildren. Gisela, although she has only been bowling for a short time is an extremely able competitor
and her enthusiasm and love for the sport is a joy to behold. She does however have trouble with her eyesight at
times as she always seems to think that her bowls are nearer to the jack than they actually are. Gisela is a
‘bubbly’ lady with a lovely personality and a keen sense of humour. In conclusion – were glad you moved to
Tideswell.

POLICE BULLETIN .
We have been informed of the following scam which is targeting females .in particular. They receive a phone call from the Post
Office asking .them to confirm their postcode. When this is given, they are told that .they have become eligible for some gift
vouchers for their co-operation .and are asked to provide their home address and postcode in order to .receive the vouchers. So
far 90% of the women who have provided this .information have been burgled, as it is assumed that their homes are .empty
during office working hours. The police are aware of this scam and .the Post Office have confirmed that they are NOT conduct-
ing any postcode .surveys. .
Also, it has been reported that if you receive a telephone call from an .individual who identifies him/herself as being an BT
Service Technician .who is conducting a test on that line, or if anyone else asks you to do .the following DON'T. They will state
that to complete the test the .recipient should dial nine, zero (90) then the hash key and then hang : this will give them
full access to your phone line, which allows them .to place long distance, international or chat-Iine calls.
These are then .billed to your account. The information which the Police have, suggests .that many of these calls are emanating
from prisons. The information has .been checked out by the police and is correct. DO NOT PRESS 90 FOR .ANYONE. .
Would anyone reading this please pass it on to friends and colleagues, .etc, otherwise it could cost someone a lot of
money. . .PC Paul Toseland Corby .Business Anti-Crime Network Administra-

It has been brought to Darkbrook' s attention that there exists unfavourable village comment regarding the
flow of water, in t imes of flood, through Darkbrook' s boundary wall and down Buxton Road.
Natives of the village will be aware that the whole length of T ideswell brook through the village has been
culverted and that, after Darkbrook, the brook has been yet again culverted through the neighbouring
property and then, at the boundary with the next property , that its flow has been three quarters restricted
by the fitting of a large gritstone lintel by former occupants.
This man-made restrict ion in the brook's flow creates the problem for Darkbrook of an unnaturally high
expansion of water on site. Nature consequently has found another water course off Darkbrook' s site and
down Buxton Road.
However, since Derbyshire County Council's introduction of a paved footpath along its boundary , Dark-
brook feels that there exists an increased health and safety risk which necessitates a resolution to the mat-
ter . A solution for Darkbrook to defend itself against the unnaturally high extent of water expansion cre-
ated on its site would be to culvert the brook, as has the rest of the village, and this view will be conveyed
to the Environment Agency. Naturally , Darkbrook which took its name from the Tideswell brook, would
very much regret the brook being culverted on its site.
TIDESWELL YOUTH CLUB
The nature of Tideswell Youth Club has changed and the programme will run on a fortnightly basis,
one week Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the following week a Youthtrain Unit.
Youthtrain accredits young people for work in subjects for which they have an interest and are not
necessarily offered through school. It also offers young people an alternative way to traditional
academic assessment to gain recognition in subjects such as citizenship, sports, creative arts etc., and
is accredited by the Open College Network and nationally recognised, there are 135 subjects in total.

TIDESWELL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Overnight between the 23rd and 24th March , two aerials were unscrewed off vehicles whilst parked on
High Street, Tideswell. One of the vehicles was parked near to the pub. Unfortunately no offenders wer e
seen or heard or have been reported to the Police. Did anybody see or hear anything? If so, pl ease con-
tact Buxton Police Station on 72100.
There has been a spate of car break -ins along the A515 during the last month. Several cars have been
targeted in one night. The Police ar e concerned that most of the cars broken into were unlocked. They
would like to stress the importance of l ocking vehicles up when they ar e left. As the old saying goes -
LOCK IT OR LOSE IT!
There has also been a number of vehicl es br oken into recently whilst they were parked on pub car parks
in village locations. The Police are concerned about the excessive amount of'knock-a-door-run' that is
being played on High Street and Chur ch A venue in Tideswell. Whilst they are aware that children play
these games, and a certain level is acceptable, certain houses are being targeted again and again to such
an extent that the residents feel harassed . This has now gone beyond being a game and the Police would
like it to end . Please keep an eye out for any such un neighbourly behaviour. Another concern the Police
have is that drugs may be being used and/or sold around Tideswell. If anyone sees anything suspicious,
please contact the Police on 72100. There appears to be an incr ease in unacceptable behaviour by some
youngsters in Tideswell and this has included at least one incident of verbal abuse during the last few
weeks. If you see anything at all which you ar e concerned about, pl ease contact the Police on 72100. If
anyone who owns a Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Fr eelander or Range Rover would like to buy a
steering wheel lock for £25.00 from the Police, please contact Tracy Critchl ow on 872012 and you will be
added to the Tideswell Neighbourhood Watch order.
If you see anything suspicious or have any information about any of the above incidents or would like to
report new ones, pl ease contact ei ther: Buxton Police Station on 72100 or .Tracy Critchlow on 872012 or
Call in at the mobile police station which is parked in the Pot Market every Monday morning
