PA S T O R J O A N ’ S C O L U M N

Many of you, if you’ve ever visited with me in my office, have seen the wooden sign that is there on a shelf of the book-case. It says, “Don’t tell God that you have a big problem; tell your problem that you have a big God!” And those of you who were able to be in church a couple of weeks ago know that I used that in my mes-sage that Sunday.

Well, the message on that sign is something that we all need to keep foremost in our minds each and every day. We all have problems that loom over us, that dominate our thinking on that day (or for several days/weeks). Maybe we keep praying eve-ry day for God to take care of the problem, and then we sit back and wait for Him to do just that.

I don’t know about all of you, but I tend to get a little impatient waiting for God to take care of my “problem of the moment!”

What we forget is that God has already taken care of the problem by giving us au-thority through Jesus Christ to directly deal with whatever is troubling us. Yes, we can pray for God to give us the strength and the wisdom we need, but the basic authority is already with us as believers

in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

There are several passages in God’s Word where Jesus tells us that we are given that authority. One is in Mark 11, after Jesus curses the fig tree for not having any fruit on it. He tells His disciples (and us) to “have faith in God. Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.” (Mark 11:22-23)

Jesus also gives us this au-thority when He commissions His disciples to also “go and make disciples of all the na-tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

And again, in Mark, we hear that “signs will accom-pany those who have be-lieved: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues…they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recov-er.” (Mark 16:17-18)

The key is that we believe we have that authority – the

same authority that Jesus gave to His disciples. We are also His disciples –- He didn’t mean any of His teaching contained in the Scriptures to be limited only to those disci-ples who actually walked with Him. He meant it for every disciple down through the ages. We need only to claim that authority in His name and believe!

The other part of under-standing our authority as a believer is to remember that Satan is already defeated. He lost his battle when Jesus hung on that cross and took all of our sins upon Himself.

What really clinches the whole “believer’s authority,” though is the resurrection –- Jesus did not stay dead. He rose from the grave and is living today, seated at the right hand of the Father. He lives in me and He lives in you! Always remember that God loves you, Jesus loves you, and I love you!

God’s Blessings!

Pastor Joan

Let's celebrate our Risen Lord in fellowship with one another! The men of our congregation will be serving pancakes, sausage, eggs, fruit, and beverage. Come anytime between 8:15 - 9:45 am! This is a free-will donation! Worship services on Easter are at 7 am and 10 am. If you would like to help cook or serve, please sign-up at the Welcome Center.

MIA FROM OUR FILES? Last August, the church office computer was hacked and subject to ransomware, where our files are encrypted and a ransom is demanded to return the files unencrypted. We refused to comply with this illegal ac-tivity, had our computer cleaned and our backed-up files downloaded from the cloud. HOWEVER! Much of our Directory info was still lost and we need everyone to contact the church with their current contact information.

Trinity Lutheran Church’s VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) presents THE WA-TER OF LIFE!

We are excited to host VBS beginning the week of Monday, June 12 through Thursday, June 15! Kim Will has volun-teered to be the coordinator.

This year VBS will be held in the after-noon so that youth can participate in sum-mer school in the morning. Children enter-ing pre-K through 6th grade are invited to attend.

Also new this year will be additional leadership assistance from 3 - 4 counselors from Luther Point Bible Camp!

There will be detailed time information and registration available at the end of April.

Our Good Friday service will be held on April 14, at 7 pm. Past Good Friday services have featured mural paintings, shadow dramas, and video presentations — all unique and different. This year’s service will continue that model, providing each worshiper the opportunity to partici-pate in the experience of remembering that Good Friday from long ago.

So come, worship, participate and feel the meaning of Good Friday. . . It will truly be a “focus on the Cross.”

Dear Friends in Christ,

You are invited to participate in what promises to be a life-changing Bible study. "Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God" is a study designed to help you:

Know when the Lord is speaking to you

Recognize His activity around you

Identify how the Lord wants to work through you

Respond to his activity

There will be one daytime class and one evening class of-fered. The exact day and times are yet to be determined. If you are interested, please contact Jerry Scheffler at 815-440-9967.

OOPS! Forgot to put the results of the Chili Cook-off in last month’s Journey, so here they are.

Trinity’s 7th Annual Chili Cook-off was held Saturday, February 25, at the church. While the attendance might have been smaller than past years, all present had great fun sampling wonderful of-ferings from __ competitors.

As per popular vote, the best chili cooks pictured are: (left to right) Harry Heath, first place; Dianne Buxton, second place, and Sue Svitak, third place.

A free-will offering was tak-en and divided between the

Birchwood Food Pantry and the Community Love Fund. Thanks to the Fellowship & Growth team for taking charge of this event and to all who participated and helped put this on.

2017 CHILI COOK-OFF WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Difference Between Easter and Christmas

by Vince Wilcox

As we prepare our hearts for worship during Passion Week, may we consider the profound differences between celebrating Christmas and celebrating Easter.

With his incarnation, we proclaim the good news to all people that a Savior is born.

With his crucifixion, we confess the sobering truth that God’s Messiah died as payment for our sins.

The cast of his birth includes joyful parents, obedient wise men, a cruel king, as well as astounded shepherds looking down at a newborn babe.

The cast of his death includes a grieving mother, a disobedient assembly of wise men, a cruel governor, and an astounded centurion looking up at the crucified Christ.

At his birth, he leaves the splendor of heaven by himself to be delivered as a newborn.

At his death, he experiences the horror of hell to deliver everyone who re-ceives him from their sins.

Christmas crescendos on that holy night in Bethlehem when Christ is born in a stable manger.

Easter erupts with an earthquake at dawn on the first day of the week in a garden tomb.

While Christmas is a gift from the heart of a loving father,

Easter is a ransom required by our rebellious hearts.

“Consider the wonder of it: God determined that he would rather go to hell on our behalf than live in heaven without us. He so much wants us not to go to hell that he paid a horrible price on the cross so that we wouldn’t have to.” –from “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn

Christmas is joyful.

Easter morning is joyful.

But the path from the occupied manger to the empty tomb is filled with more sorrow than we can imagine.

“...For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” –Hebrews 12:1b-2b

For all this and more, Christ is worthy of our praise.

April 10 deadline for registration . . . LCMC WOMEN’S 4TH ANNUAL RETREAT ON MAY 5-6 The April 10 Registration deadline is fast ap-proaching for the Sweet Life Café Retreat.

Join us at our Sweet Life Café retreat for an experience that allows women to slow down and sa-vor time with God and each other. It feels like a cozy day at your favorite coffee shop — where women can find rest, laugh, share their stories, and grow closer to each other and God.

The retreat will be held at Forest Springs Camp, in Westboro, WI. This beautiful facility is situated about 100 miles away from Birchwood, along the rus-tic glacial ridge of north central Wisconsin and offers a wonderful opportunity to unplug, have fun, learn and grow.

Rooms have been reserved rooms in Neale Lodge, each with two twin beds, a bunk bed and a trundle bed, which can accommodate up to 5 people/room if one person sleeps on the top bunk! Brochures will be available at the Welcome Center. If you missed last year’s retreat, you won’t want to miss this year’s!

WOMEN OF TRINITY MEETING MINUTES The March monthly meeting was held on Thursday, March 16.

The 2017 Women of Trinity Service Book is done, ready to be picked up at the desk in the narthex. The cover is a nice, bright yellow. Thanks to Marcia Kampf and Ginger LaMotte for creating and designing it.

“Thank you” notes were read from Benjamin House and Trinity Youth thanking us for our annual dona-tions.

April Altar Guild person is Carol Addington.

The kitchen is completely cleaned, and organized, and looks wonderful. Now we just have to keep it that way! Thanks to Ginger LaMotte for all her hard work.

Prayer Shawl Ministry is a success! So successful that we’re out of prayer shawls. Marcia will buy some more yarn and make kits, and volunteered to give an instruction class on Thursday, March 30, 10:45 am, for those who are willing to try knitting prayer shawls.

Women of Trinity will be serving the meal prior to the Wednesday Lenten Service on March 29. The menu: Cheesy broccoli soup, tomato bisque soup, crackers, fruit salad, cottage cheese, bars, cookies, cake, milk and cof-fee.

Confirmation is coming up May 7, with two confirmands.

We need to get a new tax exempt status card at Walmart as the one we have is woefully outdated.

The next meeting is Thursday, April 20, at 11 am.

April 22 is Earth Day! What better way to celebrate than by helping those in our congregation and community who need some assistance with Picking up

sticks, raking leaves, washing windows — WHATEVER!!

We’ll gather at the church at 10:30 am and “go forth” to help others.

A sign-up sheet for volunteer workers will be at the Welcome Center. If you NEED help with some chores, please call the church office and let them know what you need. We’re here to HELP!

The Trinity Council wants to keep the congregation informed of important issues affecting them. Please remain after worship on Palm Sunday, April 9, to receive an update on:

Trinity’s Financial and Budget Status

Call Committee status

Update on former pastor, Jon Paquette

Questions? Call President Leo Diehl or Pastor Joan.

On April 13, Maundy Thursday several young people will celebrate their First Communion. They will also experience how the disciples felt when their teacher, Jesus, became like a servant and washed their feet.

Maundy is derived from the Latin word for "command," and refers to Jesus' commandment to the disciples to "Love one another as I have loved you."

Please join us for this worship service and cele-brate this landmark event in their Christian lives.
