Today is the octave day (eighth day) of Easter, which is the second Sunday of Easter. On April 30th, 2000 at the canonization of Saint Faustina, the late Pope John Paul II designated today as Divine Mercy Sunday. It is therefore very appropriate that today is also the date that John Paul II and John XXIII will be enrolled among the saints.

The risen Jesus Christ in today’s Gospel shows the Divine Mercy and entrusts it to the Church:

“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you… Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20: 21-23).

In addition, Jesus has invited Thomas to touch His wounds, especially the wound in His Heart, the source from which flows the Divine Mercy poured out for all humanity.

The Church ultimately celebrates Divine Mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Part of Reconciliation is Absolution, which the priest begins: “God the Father of mercies, through the death and the resurrection of his Son has

reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins…”

Moreover, through the Sacrament of Eucharist, the Church reflects the peace that the risen Lord has granted to his early friends. After the Lord’s Prayer, the presider continues: “Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles: I leave you peace, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom, where you live for ever and ever” (Sacramentary, p. 562). In turn, the assembly is called to share the sign of peace.

The very beginning of the Eucharistic celebration, the presider invites the participants to take part in the Act of Penitence. On Sundays, especially in the Season of Easter, which we are in now, in place of the customary Act of Penitence, the blessing and sprinkling of water to recall Baptism may take place (see General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 2003, number 51).

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

PALABRA DE VIDA

“Si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos, si no meto el dedo en el agujero de los clavos y no meto la mano en su costado, no lo creo.” (Jn. 20, 25)

El relato evangélico de esta semana nos invita a meditar sobre la aparición de Cristo resucitado a los apóstoles en ausencia de Tomás y la posterior aparición del Señor en presencia de éste. La petición de Tomás, que reclama pruebas “palpables” para creer en la resurrección de Cristo, es la petición de muchos hombres, que se niegan a aceptar todo aquello que no puede ser demostrado por la razón o comprobado por los sentidos y que, al hacerlo, se cierran a sí mismos las puertas de la fe. La “palabra de vida” la viviremos intentando ser una especie de “cuerpo vivo de Cristo”, un Cristo resucitado que puede decir a los incrédulos de hoy: ven y toca, mete tus dedos en los agujeros que han dejado en mis manos los clavos. Esos agujeros no serán sólo simbólicos, sino que a veces tendrán también huellas físicas, producidas por el desgaste que lleva consigo amar al prójimo, o lo que es lo mismo, echar sobre nuestros hombros pesos que no son nuestros pero que alivian a los demás. Cuando alguien pregunte por qué lo hacemos, será el momento de contestar: porque Cristo está vivo, porque Él ha cargado con mis problemas y yo tengo una deuda que pagarle y la pago así: complicándome la vida por los que están agobiados para que ellos puedan vivir un poco mejor. Por lo tanto, date cuenta de que te observan. Si te comportas como un buen cristiano, serás el cuerpo resucitado de Cristo que convence a los incrédulos de que el Señor está vivo. Son las heridas de la caridad las que atraen a los que quieren pruebas para creer en el amor de Dios.

Propósito: Ser testigo de la victoria del amor sobre el egoísmo. Ser testigo con mi comportamiento, para atraer a los demás, para convencerles. Que toquen mi amor y crean.
