Thank you for your prayerful observance of Lent, Holy Week and festive Easter Celebrations! Even with all our social distancing requirements we had so many joining us via Facebook and YouTube!

Thanks to John Zale and Jeoff Slawson from Zale Media Group for the video production of our Holy Week church celebrations, and thanks to Fr. Przemek for his expert assistance on his cell phone for the Adoration Chapel masses and prayers too! Liz McGowen played a key role in the production, too, by getting things posted correctly and all the daily Weekender blasts sent out.

Thanks to Michael Klatt, who read most of the sacred scripture readings. Michael is a Third Year Theologian from Mundelein Seminary, The University of St. Mary of the Lake, who is living in the rectory for his Pastoral Year. Hopefully, next May he will be ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Chicago and go on to be ordained a priest.

A big thanks to Marek Rachelski, Deacon Andy Beierwaltes, Fr. Przemek, Fr. Carlton, and John Mazur, and part-time maintenance worker Danny O'Donnell who did so much to make our celebrations so complete. Thanks to Joe Wojtowicz, our business manager, Liz McGowen, and their teams who take care of so many of the behind the scene details to insure all the Lent and Easter ceremonies

are celebrated with proper reverence.

A very special thank you to Dr. Mary Maloney, our School Principal, for her hard work with her staff to ensure that e-learning is smooth and productive for our children. Thanks also to Emilia Walasik, our Youth Minister, who has been in contact with our teens and has supported Fr. Przemek in connecting to our Religious Education families and providing a weekly e-learning. Thanks to Mac Karaban, our Pastoral Associate, who has been in contact with our very young families who recently had a baby baptized; and to Maria Garcia, our Parish Secretary and bulletin editor who has helped process our mail, returned phone calls, and made sure our office was operating smoothly during this challenging time.

I am thankful for all the service our parishioners continue to do during this time as well. The leadership of Uncle Pete’s Ministry has found a way to continue to help the most needy in Chicago, and the members of our St. Vincent De Paul Society is providing emergency support to parishioners and others in the community. I am also extremely grateful for all our parishioners who prayed with us and supported us during these difficult days.

We especially reach out to our young families, and all our children and teens in this most sacred time of the Church Year. Easter Blessings to you and yours!

Jesus is encouraging Thomas, who had difficulty believing grasping the full meaning of Jesus’ death, to reach for the divine life that flows through him. Jesus’ message, a consistent message in the Gospel of John, is that believing is not a matter of physical observation but of realizing a spiritual truth. In fact, it is in the community of believers enlivened by the presence of the risen Christ that Thomas comes to know Jesus at a level that eluded him when he was in the flesh.

This is so true for all of us. It is in the community of St. John Brebeuf Parish that we come to know the deepest truth of Jesus’ life and death. Yes, indeed, we are loved and forgiven. Hope never dies.

Jezus zachęca Tomasza, który miał trudności z uwierzeniem w zrozumienie pełnego znaczenia śmierci Jezusa, aby sięgał po boskie życie, które przez niego przepływa. Przesłanie Jezusa, konsekwentne przesłanie w Ewangelii Jana, głosi, że wiara nie jest sprawą fizycznej obserwacji, ale realizacji duchowej prawdy. W rzeczywistości to we wspólnocie wierzących ożywionych obecnością zmartwychwstałego Chrystusa Tomasz poznaje Jezusa na poziomie, który umknął Mu, gdy był w ciele.

Pandemic Parish Project

Wipes, Disinfecting Sprays, & Homemade Masks

Thank you to those who donated last week!

We delivered 10 bottles of disinfectant spray and

16 homemade facemasks to the Niles Police Department.

Homemade face masks delivered to our Niles first responders on Monday, April 13!

Fr. Meany recently spoke with Niles Police Dept. They are in need of two things: • Un-opened disinfecting wipes and disinfecting sprays to keep their vehicles and facilities germ free. • Face coverings -- N95 masks ideally, or medical facemasks, but because of the shortage homemade face

masks are requested for police and fire personnel use while serving the public. Instructions:

Simple instructions from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) may be found at www.sjbrebeuf.org/pastoral. Please wash your hands, clean your work area, and use clean materials. 1) We encourage all parishioners to make face masks for donation. Please put the completed masks into a sealed bag, such as a sandwich bag. 2) Parish staff will collect face masks, un-opened disinfecting wipes, and un-opened disinfecting sprays (e.g., Lysol) in front of the church on Monday, April 20, from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. We plan to collect items at the same time on Mondays in front of the church while maintaining social distance until the stay-at-home order is lifted. Donations will be accepted from your car window, similar to how we collect bags for Uncle Pete's Ministry. If you have questions please call 847-966-8145 or email [email protected]. Our staff is working from home but will respond to your messages as soon as we can. Thank you.


Reading 1 ACTS 2:42-47 They devoted themselves

to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life,

to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone,

and many wonders and signs were done through the

apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in

common;

they would sell their property and possessions

and divide them among all according to each one’s need. Every day they devoted themselves

to meeting together in the temple area

and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart,

praising God and enjoying favor with all the people.

And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Reflection

We hear today this portrait of the ideal community of faith. In allowing the Holy Spirit to take the lead, the community exhibits many admirable qualities. These qualities as St. Luke notes are rooted in communal prayer which helps them to keep their focus on the Lords' new commandment to love one another as he has loved them. Led by the Holy Spirit, they seek out the spiritual and material welfare of each member. The Church, the community of believers (not the building or the institutions), cooperates with the Risen Lord in a life of personal detachment from the things of this world. In this way the believers are able to share what they possess for the benefit of their brothers and sisters. Only together do we grow in love of God and neighbor. Our culture and the turmoil in the Church have posed many challenges to faith and provoked many questions. Our current pandemic has in some circles only fueled more questions of uncertainty and the relevance of organized religion. These questions begin with: “How can God allow...” “Why should we believe anything they say when...” and “What difference does it make?” .. and, one that I hear the most, “You don't have to believe anything to be a good person.” This last question I feel compelled to respond; “Yes, the world is filled with many good people who don't attend Mass or a Sunday service somewhere, but are we the best that we can be? Is our “goodness” more about “good manners” or doing what is socially approved of in order “get ahead” or is our “goodness” rooted in something

deeper? Today's reading and the Feast of Divine Mercy reminds us that faith and therefore our “goodness'” is a gift from God's infinite mercy which is nurtured in community. Dr. Anthony Fauci from the CDC was asked by Jake Tapper from CNN on Easter Sunday, “How does faith speak to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic?” After noting that he is Roman Catholic and was educated by the Jesuits, Dr. Fauci responded, and I'm paraphrasing here, that his own father had a very strong faith. He was an inspiration to Dr. Fauci, and his father held onto his faith all through his life. Fauci continued that faith can be a source of hope and comfort for many who are grieving and suffering the effects of the current pandemic.

He did make it clear, however, that faith is faith and science is science and each, from what I gathered from his remarks, has to be respected. Believers should not ignore the health warnings from doctors, nor should non believers totally disregard faith.

Dzisiaj słyszymy jak powinien wyglądać obraz idealnej wspólnoty wiary. Pozwalając Duchowi Świętemu przejąć inicjatywę, wspólnota wykazuje wiele godnych podziwu cech. Te cechy, jak zauważa św. Łukasz, są zakorzenione we wspólnej modlitwie, która pomaga im skupić się na nowym przykazaniu Bożym, aby kochać się wzajemnie tak, jak On ich umiłował. Prowadzeni przez Ducha Świętego szukają duchowego i materialnego dobra każdego członka. Kościół, wspólnota wierzących (nie budynek ani instytucje), współpracuje ze Zmartwychwstałym Panem w życiu osobistego oderwania się od spraw tego świata. W ten sposób wierzący mogą dzielić się tym, co posiadają, z korzyścią dla swoich braci i sióstr. Tylko razem możemy kochać Boga i bliźniego. Nasza kultura i zawirowania w Kościele stanowią wiele wyzwań dla wiary i skłaniają nas do wielu pytań. Nasza obecna pandemia w niektórych kręgach tylko podsyciła więcej wątpliwości i znaczenia zorganizowanej religii. Te pytania zaczynają się od: „Jak Bóg może pozwolić”… „Dlaczego mamy wierzyć we wszystko, co mówią, kiedy ...” i „Jaką to robi różnicę?” .. i, który słyszę najczęściej: „Nie musisz wierzyć w nic, aby być dobrym człowiekiem”. To ostatnie pytanie, na które czuję się zmuszony odpowiedzieć; „Tak, świat jest wypełniony wieloma

dobrymi ludźmi, którzy nie uczęszczają w Mszach Świętych lub niedzielnych nabożeństwach, ale czy jesteśmy najlepsi, jakimi możemy być? Czy nasza „dobroć” polega bardziej na „dobrych manierach” lub robieniu tego, co jest społecznie aprobowane, aby „iść naprzód”, czy też nasza „dobroć” jest zakorzeniona w czymś głębszym? Dzisiejsze czytanie i Święto Bożego Miłosierdzia przypomina nam, że wiara, a zatem nasza „dobroć”, jest darem od nieskończonego miłosierdzia Bożego, które jest pielęgnowane we wspólnocie. Reflection The idea of testing in the realm of faith is always a challenging one. Saint Peter touches on that subject when he says in his letter: “In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor, at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Peter highlights the fact that faith does not come without struggles, but in fact struggles in faith make it more precious and grounded. It’s a similar dynamic to physical exercise, where muscles get stronger when they are challenged by weights and intense workouts. Having that in mind, I have a challenge for you today -- how can you turn the current situation of pandemic into an exercise of faith in God? Current situation is not only bad news, it can become a gym for your trust in God :) Fr. Przemek Tomczyk Refleksja Idea sprawdzania się w dziedzinie wiary jest zawsze trudna. Jest to dynamika podobna do ćwiczeń fizycznych, w których mięśnie stają się silniejsze, gdy stają przed nimi ciężary i intensywne treningi. Mając to na uwadze, mam dziś dla Was wyzwanie - jak zmienić obecną sytuację pandemii w praktykę wiary w Boga? when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,

Jesus came and stood in their midst

and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.

As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to

them,

“Receive the Holy Spirit.

Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve,

was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the

Lord.”

But he said to them,

“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks

and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them.

Jesus came, although the doors were locked,

and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my

hands,

and bring your hand and put it into my side,

and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my

God!”

Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?

Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples

that are not written in this book.

But these are written that you may come to believe

that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Peter highlights the fact that faith

does not come without struggles, but

in fact struggles in faith make it

more precious and grounded.

Reflection There are two images from this Gospel that I wanted to highlight: the locked doors and the peace of Jesus. First, I think that it is worth noticing the fear of the disciples at the beginning of the Gospel: “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews…” As I have mentioned in other reflections, I think that St. Ignatius of Loyola’s practice of trying to place yourself imaginatively into a scene can be very helpful in trying to pray with and learn from it. The image is a simple one: the disciples, out of fear, locked themselves in a room. This image, though, is probably a familiar one for too many of us in our lives. How many possibilities have you locked out of your life? Far too often, and largely because of fear, people put unnecessary and arbitrary limits on their lives and, as a result spend too much time inside of locked doors that necessarily limit what they are able to do with their lives. Whenever I think of this idea, I think of a commencement speech given by Jim Carrey where he said: “…fear is going to be a player in your life but you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future. All there will ever be is what’s happening here and the decisions we make in this moment which are based in either love or fear. So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect so we never dare to ask the universe for it.” But, what is the message of this Gospel and the stories that we have read this week about the Resurrection? That Jesus wants to meet us in the impossible places in our lives and when we limit ourselves to what we think is “practical” and so live our lives behind locked doors, we will never get to those impossible places and, as a result, we will not meet Jesus. If that is not enough, then think about the first thing that Jesus says to the disciples: “Peace be with you.” He says this for several reasons - one of which is that when you go out of the locked doors and go to the impossible places then you will experience a peace that you never would have otherwise. O wiele za często i głównie z powodu strachu ludzie nakładają niepotrzebne i arbitralne ograniczenia na swoje życie, w wyniku czego spędzają zbyt wiele czasu za zamkniętymi drzwiami, który zdecydowanie ogranicza to, co mogą zrobić ze swoim życiem. Ilekroć myślę o tym pomyśle, myślę o przemówieniu wygłoszonym przez Jima Carreya, w którym powiedział: „… strach będzie graczem w twoim życiu, ale ty decydujesz o ilości. Możesz spędzić całe życie wyobrażając sobie jakieś widma, martwiąc się o drogę do przyszłości. Wszystko, co kiedykolwiek się wydarzy, to to, co się tutaj dzieje a decyzje, które podejmujemy w tej chwili, oparte są na miłości lub strachu. Tak wielu z nas wybiera naszą drogę w oparciu o zamaskowany strach. To, czego naprawdę chcemy, wydaje się niemożliwe do osiągnięcia i niedorzeczne, więc nigdy nie ośmielamy się prosić o to wszechświata. ” Ale jakie jest przesłanie tej Ewangelii i opowieści, które czytaliśmy w tym tygodniu o Zmartwychwstaniu? To request a mass intention, please visit our website at www.sjbrebeuf.org and click on the yellow "Mass In-tentions" box. Fill out the form, and click "submit." Requests may also be mailed to "Mass Intentions, St. John Brebeuf Parish Office, 8305 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, IL 60714." All mass intention offerings should be mailed to the Parish Office. Please make your request 2 weeks in advance so we have time to receive it and place it in the bulletin. Please, no phone calls regarding mass intentions.
