2016- Children Advocacy of NJ- Chronic Absenteeism: participated in a Panel on the discussion of Asthma as one cause for absenteeism and The Childrens RESPIRA Education Program

2006-2011: The Childrens RESPIRA Education Program has been my clinical/educational research it provides Spanish asthma education to Latino families who have children with asthma. It was designed in 2006 and initial seed funding given by the Health Care Foundation of New Jersey. We have created partnerships with schools, faith based organizations, Latino organizations, daycares, UMDNJ- School of Nursing Mobile van unit, and Health center in the cities. We have worked in 7 counties in New Jersey (Essex, Union, Hudson, Passiac, Middlesex, Morris, and Bergen). We have also done many health fairs in the communities.

We have been fortunate to work the UMDNJ Marketing and Communications Department as well as with the Foundation of UMDNJ on press and marketing related projects. There have been press releases which were circulated and approved through the UMDNJ internal review process.

We were interviewed by the Daily Record and the Star Ledger press.

Two articles have been published in the Daily Record and in Nurse.com (in March 2008), and one will appear soon in the Star Ledger.

UMDNJ issued a news release posted on the UMDNJ website and through UMDNJs E-news. Our educational programs have been posted monthly on the UMDNJ website.

We were recently interviewed by NJ Healthwatch Channel 9 news. Channel 9 reporters spent time in the sanofi-aventis asthma center with me, Dr. Barbara Suarez and the public health representative on home visits.

The American Lung Association of New Jersey has also been very supportive and is incorporating the program into its own press releases, including an interview with a RESPIRA mom who has shown great appreciation for the benefits received through the program.

The University Hospital community outreach health fairs, which have occurred at churches, parks and other community organizations and locations, have included the RESPIRA Program in their materials.

We were interviewed on Radio Cristiana in March, 2008.

We have posted advertisements in church bulletins in Latino communities.

We have listed our program at the United Way community service listing.

We are currently working with two Latino community newspapers to place a press release regarding May Asthma Awareness and the RESPIRA program.

We have been interviewed by Spanish radio stations such as FM 93.1, radio WADO, Univision and Telemundo. We recently had a supporter, Michael Chundak who is a 13 yr old Latino adolescent with asthma who had a fund raiser in Passaic County for RESPIRA spreading the word about our program.

We have advertised in the following newspapers: El Nuevo Hudson, El Especialito, Variedades TV, El Cambio, El 4 to Poder Magazine, Latino News and Jersey Journal.

An article focusing on me appeared on the page facing the inside back cover in the June 2008 issue of 4to Poder The Latinos Power, a Spanish-language magazine covering northern New Jersey. This was accompanied by a full-page ad for the RESPIRA program on the inside back cover including their website.

Willy Sanchez from WNJN presented a TV special documentary Tu Salud Primero on medical problems in the Latino population where the RESPIRA program was presented in addition to problems encountered in Latino Children with asthma. This documentary won the Philadelphia Press Association award and received two Emmy nominations.

We have a health program on RESPIRA on the Cable network of Essex County Public Access channel which has been presented in cablevision and now the internet.

LATINOS UNIDOS dinner presentation recognition of our community efforts with RESPIRA.

I was interviewed for the Gloria B morning show for Telemundo (Channel 47). They were able to present the program to a large audience in the Hispanic population.

The RESPIRA Program has been posted at the Community Asthma Friendly website.

We posted press releases in several Latino newspapers during May of 2009 for the Asthma awareness month.

I was interviewed by Joe Torres ABC Channel 7 on 9/14/2009 for the Tiempo discussing the Childrens RESPIRA Education Program.

I assisted the CARAS 10 years anniversary celebration hosted by Joe Torres on October 29th 2009.

We were invited to assist in the launch of the Health Van in Elizabeth, NJ as part of our partnership with this initiative on October 30th, 2009.

We were interviewed by a Columbia University Journalism student regarding the Childrens RESPIRA Education program home visits and environmental triggers in November 2009.

Our staff promoted the Program at Dr. E Alma Flagg School Career Day on May 19th 2010 in Newark NJ.

Our staff promoted the program on May 21st, 2010 at Alexander St. School Annual Career Day in Newark NJ.

We promoted our program at a meeting with Save Latin America director on July 2nd 2010.

We met with the school nurses and Head Start nurses at Middlesex county so we can provide education

We have continued to advertise our program through the two major Latino newspapers in the area that we service: El Especialito and Cambio.

The program has recently been recognized by the El Cambio newspaper 2011

Recognized by Aetna Voices of Health 2012 for the best practice asthma model education program.

Public Outreach

Toll free number 1-888-KID-ASMA was established for the community as a bilingual asthma helpline with topics about asthma including hot topics (eg. asthma related awareness issues) and events.

Website: we have been able to work with UMDNJ IST on a new and exciting website: www.respiranj.org. This link is given to all parents, schools and community based organization to be used to access updated information about our program, asthma related topics, and event information.

Community partnerships

The UMDNJ School of Nursing-Mobile Healthcare Medical Unit

We have reached out to the Board of Education in Essex, Hudson and Union Counties. We have also developed partnerships with the schools in Middlesex, Passaic and Morris counties.

Created a new partnership with Middlesex school nurses and Head start program to provide education and home visits.

We have also established a partnership with FOCUS (Hispanic Center for Community Development) in Newark and CARAS (Child Advocacy Resource Association) located in Union, Hudson and Essex counties. Both are Latino organizations which provide community services. We continue to work closely with La Casa de Don Pedro in Newark providing asthma education.

We have also made other inroads with other organizations like El Club del Barrio, Mantena Global, and The Ironbound Community Center in Newark. Also we have been able to partner with Save Latin America, and The Family Success Center under the NJ Horizon Health Center in Hudson County. In Passaic County we partnered with The Hispanic Community Center.

We have been involved with faith-based organizations allowing us to bring RESPIRA program to their churches.

The other partnership which started with RESPIRA in 2006 is Programs for Parents. We have maintained contact with Programs for Parents which is an organization which provides children health education to childcare providers in NJ. We have continued to provide bilingual asthma educational materials to day care providers.

We have partnered with Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey working with Teresa Lampmann in spreading our information regarding RESPIRA. In January 2000, the American Lung Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Thoracic Society initiated the formation of The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey (PACNJ) to act as a statewide clearinghouse for asthma programs and services.

Created new partnerships with the Childrens Services of the University Behavioral Health Care at UMDNJ, and also with Eric B. Chandler Health Clinic in New Brunswick. The RESPIRA Program has also partnered with the Regional Direction of Latino Health Equity at the American Heart Association.

C. Clinical Research Program

a. The Childrens RESPIRA Education Program (RESPIRA) is a replicable project founded and directed by Dr. Montalvo Stanton that promotes equity in healthcare for children experiencing the chronic asthma. RESPIRA empowers families to become proactive, educated and more in control of managing their childs asthma. Our program is unique we provide bilingual asthma education presentations (in Spanish and English) followed by two home visits and follow up with a quality of life survey which is disseminated to each family upon completion of the program. The program currently spans eight counties throughout New Jersey focusing on the counties with dense populations of Latino families. Our mission is to reduce emergency department visits and hospitalizations by empowering these families and helping them to improve their quality of life. We have been able to achieve this by developing and utilizing this best practice medical education model which serves the underrepresented and underserved families in New Jersey.
