By Mackenzie LoopFashion in Toronto constantly changes, as quickly

as the city-paced life does. Moving here from the small town of Wheatley, I have been introduced to the many diverse styles set by a variety of groups of people. Having a job modeling has allowed me to have a backstage pass to the fashion world.

I have learned that there is definitely no right or wrong answer when it comes to fashion. Sure there are many fashion faux pas, but there is also no such thing as normal. In the city, people seem less afraid to play around a little bit with fashion. This anonym-ity has taught me to take more risks and be more confident when wearing an outfit that just may not be everyone’s definition of “normal”.

Since there are thousands of stores in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), many of them compete to stand out and be different, while still incorporating the trends at the moment. This spring I have no-ticed, of course, the introduction of brighter colors but also the mixing and matching up of them with

darker shades. The two colors I have noticed re-ally making their appearance so far this season are dark army green and a light amber color. Sometimes adding a nude color to coordinate can create a very classy look as well.

Nowadays, it seems it’s all about following the basic trend outlines, then adding your own flare and making it into your own personal style. I find in To-ronto that fashion rules have been tossed to the side for the most part, making way for individualism. In this city, finding a businessman in a $2000 suit, a homeless person begging for change, top fashioni-stas, a hipster and a casually dressed person all on the same street is nothing out of the ordinary. As the weather gradually warms, styles are changing too, and I cannot wait to see what will be next!

Spring 2011 Hair Trends

• Style •The Extreme Side Part

Parts are going bolder this season, so instead of a centre or slightly off-centre part this spring, be a little more daring and do the extreme side part. This style has ultimate versatility in that it works on both long and short hair and can go sleek and shiny or wavy and curly.

Low Buns & PonytailsLast season’s top knots are moving way down for

spring 2011. Hair is twisted, knotted or simply long and sleek, but all are going to be gathered very low and worn close to the nape.

Natural WaveThis flowing, tousled, and sometimes messy look

is best suited for these warmer seasons to come. For those of us not fortunate enough to achieve this look naturally, apply a leave-in conditioner or light texture-enhancing product to your hair and rough-dry it. Then take random sections of hair and wrap them around a medium to large-barrel curling iron to create these ropey loose waves.

• Cuts •Blunt Bangs for Long Hair

Let your fringe become your main accessory this season. Blunt bangs have been trendy for some time now, and for spring the look is especially hot. Wear them heavy and just below your eyebrows, or go retro by wearing them above your brows.

Punk Inspiration for Short HairShort hair is seeing a change this spring with

messy punk-inspired shapes. The most versatile way to get this look is an undercut with length on top which maintains femininity, while the sharp sil-houette and loads of texture take centre stage.

• Colour •Blonde

Say goodbye to winter’s cool shades of platinum, as spring’s blondes are warming up along with the temperature in tones of rosy pink and metallic gold. This year’s ombre trend has become much more subtle in spring where the color goes on darker at the root and then fades into lighter and brighter highlights on the mid-shaft and ends.

BrunetteBrunettes will go to a whole new level this season

with an overall cooler base for spring 2011. Light, medium and darkest shades of brown alike have be-come blue and violet based. This season’s brunette is predominantly worn single-toned and solid and boosts extreme shine.

RedRed hair color is a huge trend in 2011, and for

spring it remains all the rage. You can opt for a more natural look or be daring and go dramatic. Darker skin and hair better suit violet based shades of red. Lighter color skin-tones can try brighter colours in coppers and fire-engine reds, which also tend to go better with fairer skin tones.

Goth can be fashionableGothic clothing, unique goth t-shirts and gothic

jewellery can complete the goth look and make a huge fashion statement for those into the goth cul-ture scene. Popular with anyone from rock stars, ce-lebrities, to someone seeking a new look – young and old, it is a style all its own.

History of the Goth Look and Gothic

Clothing Fashion SceneThe Goth culture and the distinctive gothic cloth-

ing that is affiliated with it have been around since as early as the late seventies. Unknown by many people and thanks to a couple of bands, that first generation of the goth society materialized mainly in the UK as an offshoot of the punk generation in the late 70s and early 80s. Gothic clothing and goth jewellery is traditionally worn by people who are in-volved in the gothic subculture, although it has be-come a little more mainstream today.

The goth subculture known as being rather dark and mysterious and in some circles it is extremely erotic. Although this style of gothic dress is gener-ally comprised of dark colours including black, dark grey and purples it is quite eclectic, and as with

any type of fashion it is always open to personal interpretation. Along with the darkly coloured gothic clothes, goth jewellery and imaginative goth shoes, most goths will opt for black make-up for the lips, eyes, fingernails and dyed black hair. This is true of both the men and the women that choose to adopt this type of fashion.

Gothic ClothingDesigners

Over the years there has been many famous de-signers affiliated with the scene including John Galliano and Alex-ander McQueen. Several famous musical celebrities have led the scene over time, for instance Ozzy Osbourne and the acclaimed graphic artist Vince Ray. You can see Vince Ray’s artistic talents on many of the gothic t-shirts available. It is celebrities like these that have made goth fashion and alchemy gothic clothing so pop-ular with the younger generations.

Buying Gothic T Shirts and Goth Clothing Online

There are literally hundreds of different outlets where you can obtain a gothic t-shirt or any other goth items to build up your gothic ensemble. You may be able to locate a few specialist shops

in some cities but the majority of them simply do not have a good enough se-lection for you to create the unique and stunning look you are after.

There is a plethora of excellent goth websites that have everything from gothic jewellery to gothic clothing and goth shoes, if your city or town doesn’t have the selection, because let’s face it, there’s not a huge market for goth, but there is a market.

Dressing as a goth gives you the op-portunity to make yourself a true indi-vidual and stand out from the crowd.

Scarves

Animal Prints: These prints are nowhere near going extinct. This trend started in 2008 and three years later celebrities like Jessica Alba are still wear-ing it. Animal print scarves add excitement to any plain outfit without being over-the-top.

Tie Dye: The 70s are coming back this spring. The retro flashback to the 1970s and tie-dye is making a comeback. It will add a splash of co-lour and what better way to stand out this spring than vibrant colours?

Bandana Style: The triangle shaped scarf, the square scarf, or even the kerchief-style scarf. However you want to categorize it, the style just hit the runway and is soon to hit the streets. Learn how to tie a ban-dana scarf.

The Tied Silk Scarf: Silk scarves are very popular this time of year and often seen tied with a knot. Use a silk scarf to pull together and dress up casual outfits.

The Fringe Scarf: Fringe scarves became popular last fall and it looks like the trend is here to stay. Deep cuts in fabric add a dramatic touch to a simple out-fit and also creates a textured edge. Fringe scarves come in a vari-ety of fashions including patterned or solid co-loured.

Floral: When you think of spring, you al-most always think of flowers. So what better to add a spring flair to your wardrobe this sea-son than flowers? Floral print is very popular this year and it adds a soft subtle touch to your out-fits.

With more and more men growing fashion conscious, there seems to be a trend for men’s scarves in almost all parts of the world.

The most popular among all the categories of men’s scarves are silk scarves, which are preferred for their soft feel and rich lustrous look. There is a huge variety of men’s silk scarves. You can either go for the unique men’s Ori-ental silk scarves which are made of 100 percent silk and are therefore very soft, smooth and silky. They are provided with unique Ori-ental calligraphy and fringe for added appeal. The most interesting aspect of these scarves is that they are double-sided and therefore, you can wear them any way, either front-side up or reverse-side up to match with your attire.

Currently, the whole fashion world is talking admiringly about the white silk aviator scarves. These stunningly beautiful scarves are made of 100 percent silk and have a soft and silky feel. They are longer and wider than their counter-parts, and are folded length-wise, which makes the scarves appear to be made up of two layers. Apart from white, the silk aviator scarves are also

Dressing for the officeDressing up for work can be a tedious task for some, mainly because they are not accustomed to wearing

formal clothing every day. These people should at least know the basics of proper office wear so as to avoid being under dressed or being too fashionable at the work place. The best office wear should reflect a sense of professionalism and a proficient image regardless of one’s career level.

The style, cut, and colors of your office wear will reflect the personality you have towards your work. If you rely and focus on your career path, then you are more in tune with a professional look rather than a trendier style at work. For women, it is best to keep their chandelier earrings and big-cuffed bangles for after work use, since this will only distract them and other co-workers during a meeting.

In general, both men and women should apply minimalism when it comes to office wear. They should avoid wearing big accessories and big bold prints that easily distract people, and should take good notice of proper fitting, especially when it comes to pantsuits, skirts, and blazers. The jackets should be fit enough even when buttoned, and tops should not have gaps or holes in between the buttons.

Choose colors that work well in the office environment. Colors like gray, black, navy, or red may be used in everyday work attire. One can manage to incorporate these colors by making use of accessories such as a navy top/blouse or a red tie. Since most of these colors work well in skirts and pantsuits, they can be

worn easily by professionals. A softer shade can be mixed into any work ensemble, such as lilac and ice blue, but beware of loud and wild colors.

The accessories you wear should reflect a sharp image on your professional appeal. Go for a red tie or a structured style handbag, and avoid slouchy style accessories and wrinkled clothing. Give high importance to details. Go for neat hair, manicured nails, clean shoes, and run-free hose.

It is easier for you to measure the level of profes-sional work attire if you base your work clothes with your boss’s. If he wears a red tie to work, maybe you can wear a purple one instead. It helps to have a guide like this for future reference.

What women think of a man who

wears a pink tieThere is absolutely

no reason for men to fear wearing pink ties. Yes, society by in large has touted the color as feminine and fragile. Yes, it is the women who are usually seen wearing pink clothes and accessories. These should not be enough to make men turn in the opposite direction from pink neckties, though. If anything, these norms should prompt men to wear the accessory more.

Although the general male population would never admit it, men ac-

tually care to a certain extent what women think of their clothes. One of the reasons why they avoid pink outfits and accessories is that they are wary of the impression it would make on the ladies. And though it is characteristic of a man to remain tight-lipped about it, he would love to have insight into what goes on in a woman’s mind when she sees him wearing a pink necktie.

ConfidentThere is nothing more attractive than confidence.

Most women think that men wearing pink-colored neckties are secure enough in their masculinity to break the gender norms attached to the color. Word from the wise, though – one must actually be con-

fident for this to work. Simply wearing a pink tie won’t mean a thing if one doesn’t have the strength of character within.

SensitiveAnother trait that women associate with pink ties

is sensitivity. Women like men who have sensitive sides to them. There is a common thinking, though, that men would go through all the hoops just to avoid matters of the heart. By wearing a pink tie, they can show they are in touch with their emotions, and that they are not afraid to show it.

AdventurousWhile pink is thought of as a delicate color, some

women get the opposite vibe when they see guys in pink ties. They think these men are adventurous enough to make such a risky fashion decision. Even if pink generally looks good on almost any complexion, people are not used to seeing men in pink apparel and think that it exhibits a daring side on the part of its wearers.

Sophisticated There is also a cer-

tain elegance brought by pink, especially on men who wear pieces of the same hue. Pink ties lend a certain polish and class to suits, provided that they are chosen correctly.

By Tanya TurnerDo you want to change dark eye color to some-

thing different, but you are unsure if color contacts will work for your eyes? If you have brown eyes and tried color contact lenses several years ago, you were probably disappointed. Color contacts of the previous generation ether gave your eye color only a very slight change or your eyes looked blue but completely unnatural.

Creating color lenses that would truly transform brown eyes into sky blue or emerald green is a very difficult task, but modern color contact lenses can do it. The trick is to select the lenses that would work for you.

There are two types of color contacts - enhance-ment color contacts and opaque color lenses. En-hancers usually come in different shades of blue, green and gray and are designed to make your natu-ral eye color look brighter. They are translucent and create a natural-looking effect. Unfortunately, en-hancement color contacts work only for light eyes. Over brown eyes, enhancers would be either com-pletely invisible or create only a very light tint that is not enough to change your color.

Opaque color contacts, on the other hand, are specially designed for brown eyes. As the name sug-gests, they aren’t transparent; only the center of the lens is clear, so you can still see. Opaque lenses aren’t solid color, of course: they simulate the natu-ral pattern of a human eye.

However, not all opaque color contacts do a good job of recreating a natural pattern. Here, I will high-light the brands that create a vivid, but natural-look-

ing effect.Freshlook Colorblends by Ciba Vision

look very realistic because the base color for each lens is actually a mix of three dif-ferent shades - just as it usually is in the human iris. The lens is lighter toward the middle and darker at the edge, with a pat-tern imprinted on it. The color created is vivid, but dark, so Freshlook Colorblends won’t make your eyes appear light. Fresh-look Colorblends are monthly disposable color lenses. In my opinion, Amethyst and True Sapphire are their best colors.

Acuvue 2 Colors Opaques also create a beautiful, realistic effect. Like all Acuvue contacts, Acuvue 2 Colors is a comfort-able lens. The lenses are designed to be replaced every two weeks - this is what the “2” in the name means. Acuvue 2 Colors is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

Illusions, also by Ciba Vision, can transform your brown eyes into light blue or green. The effect they create is truly amazing. One drawback of Illusions, though, is that they are traditional, annual replace-ment contact lenses, which means that they are thicker and not as comfortable as Freshlook or Acu-vue.

Problems opaque color contact lenses can create

One problem is that a lens can slip a little on your eye, so part of your brown iris is visible. Most people, however, don’t worry about it, because the brown is

visible only under close scrutiny; otherwise it blends with the black of your pupil.

Another problem is that opaque color lens might affect your vision. As you know, pupils get larger or smaller, depending on the lighting conditions - it is smallest under a bright light and largest in the dark. Since the clear part of color contact lens isn’t adjust-able, in low light situations, part of your pupil will be covered by the opaque lens and your vision will be decreased. It doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to see in the dark, just not as well as you would see if

you weren’t wearing your contacts. For this reason, driving at night while wearing your color contacts isn’t recommended - at least, not until you know for sure how they affect your eyes.

If you wonder how you will look with different eye colors, give color contacts a try. Eyes are the focal point of your look, and you would be amazed how different you appear with eyes of a different color.

Tanya Turner is a contact lens expert and a founder of http://www.1-contact-lenses-con-sumer-guide.com/, where you can find unbi-ased information about eye health, all types

of contact lenses and comparison of color contact lenses.
