Since NBIA hosted its first conference in Philadelphia in 1987, the organization has been bringing together business incubation and economic development professionals to explore strategies for entrepreneur support. As we mark our 25th conference, we look ahead to the future of the business incubation industry. Over the last several years, incubation has become widely recognized as a proven strategy for sparking economic growth and creating jobs around the world.

NBIA’s 25th International Conference on Business Incubation will take place April 10-13 in San Jose, Calif. The San Jose area is home

to the largest concentration of technology expertise in the world – more than 6,600 technology companies employing more than 254,000 people. Widely considered a hub of innovation, San Jose will provide the perfect backdrop to comprehensive training and networking for incubation professionals. Fac i l i t i es ManagementSaturday, April 9 // 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.In addition to running entrepreneur support programs, most incubator managers also are responsible for a physical facility, with duties such as writing and enforcing lease agreements, contracting for utilities and deciding how to allocate space. This workshop will focus on facility design, planning, function, maintenance and operation; policies and procedures will not be discussed. The presenter will cover various aspects of managing an incubator facility, including new building construction vs. renovation projects, energy conservation, and strategies for generating revenue and controlling costs. He will share several examples across a broad spectrum of incubation programs – from mixed-use and rural incubators to technology and nontraditional programs.

The Fundamenta ls of Incubator ManagementSunday, April 10 // 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.This workshop – for managers of established incubators – will cover strategies and techniques for running successful programs. Topics will include defining a mission and governance structure, working with a board of directors, generating revenue and achieving financial self-sustainability, recruiting clients and more. The workshop is divided into four sections:

This workshop will focus on the complex matter of incubator funding, specifically during the initial start-up phase. The presenter will share advice on writing grants – especially to federal funding agencies – and discuss the steps involved in an effective capital campaign. You’ll receive examples of successful grant applications to the U.S. Economic Development Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture and private foundations, as well as materials used in a capital campaign, such as a fundraising brochure, a consultant RFP, a solicitation letter and a guide to soliciting funders.

Tentat ive Keynote Address : John FernandezJohn Fernandez was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the assistant secretary of commerce for economic development. As the administrator of the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, Fernandez is charged with leading the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, and preparing American regions for growth and success in the global economy. Prior to his appointment, Fernandez worked for Krieg Devault, an Indianapolis-based law firm, where he advised private and governmental organizations on economic development, public finance and policy issues.
