2019 Alberta Provincial Election

Monday, April 15th Students will participate in the Student Vote election at JR Robson School the day

Future in Education Technology Conference 2019. This was a huge conference attended by delegates from all 50 states in the U.S.A. and from 75 other countries around the world. I truly did learn a lot about what is happening around the world when it comes to technology in the class room. As a one de-vice –one student school, I did realize that our school is middle of the pack when com-pared to other school systems around the world. I was pleased to learn that the infu-sion of one device to one student learning that we embarked on 5 years ago here is typ-

ical of leading educational systems around the world. For example, I visited a school in Orange County, Florida that is part of a school system where every high school stu-dent is expected to have their own personal device for learning. The school I visited had over 3200 students on their campus. I wit-nessed how that school employs strategies to infuse the use of technology into student learning. I would equate the work we do here as equal to what that particular school is do-ing. That definitely gave me reassurance that we are on the right track here at JR Robson. I also realized that using new technology and

using web based programs in student learn-ing never ends. It is a constantly changing dynamic. The challenge for educators like us in our school is to be able to adapt to the new learning and new ways of learning that new technology constantly provides to us. There is little doubt in my mind though that this is a challenge we all must accept. School counsellors are busy registering high school students for the 2019-20 school year. It is very important that students make course selections very carefully as this signif-

icantly influences how the timetable will be built. The biggest priority in building a time-table is trying to ensure that each student gets all the require core courses they request. While some students will end up with unbal-anced schedules, understand that this is not a driving force in building or changing the timetable. Often minor adjustments can be made, but with trying to offer the amount of in-class courses we do with a very limited number of teaching staff, there are many challenges when building the timetable. Thus priorities are established prior to its construction and adhered to.

The Alexan-der Rutherford applications are also availa-ble on this website. In order to receive funding you must apply at least one month prior to your attendance at a post-secondary institution. If you take a year or two off before attending post-secondary school, as long as you qualified, the funds are available make sure you apply. For infor-mation on how to apply use this website:

The same login, password and email will be used to apply for your Ruth-erford Scholarship and Student Loan site so use one that is familiar to you, hopefully you will remember the password.

Registration for Grade 10 and 11 students is nearing the completion stage. For Grade 11 Students, Mrs. Hart has met with you to assist in the planning and selecting of courses for grade 12. For Grade 10 students Mrs. Polishuk met with the class to timetable stu-dents for grade 11. Following our discussions,

the registration forms were sent home for parent approval. We ask that you review the registration form with your child and sign the form indicating you are familiar with your child’s course selections. Please return the form to your counsellor as soon as possible as so timetabling can begin shortly after the Easter Break. Remember: our timetable is built upon the student selections so we ask you to have a discussion with your child about his/her course choices and choose classes wisely. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact

Mrs. Polishuk or Mrs. Hart at any time.

Registration for Grade 9 students going into Grade 10 will take place on Thursday, April 17 at 7:00 pm at J. R. Robson School in the Learning Commons. Mrs. Hart has met with the grade 9 classes to enroll stu-dents in classes for grade 10, the grade 9 teachers have reviewed their course selec-tions and have indicated where they see your child being the most successful and now we just need parent approval to complete the registration process. The grade 9 and 10 teachers will be on hand at the parent meet-ing for you to ask any questions you may have regarding enrollment in grade 10 cours-es. If you cannot attend please contact the school to arrange a meeting with Mrs. Hart to complete your son/daughter’s registration for grade 10.

On April 9, a recruiter from Grant MacE-wan University will be giving a presentation in the CALM class from 12:30-1:15 in Room 206. Any grade 11 or 12 students who would more information about this institution are invited to attend.

For students enrolled in Work Experience, RAP or Green Certificate, please continue to submit your hour, any midterm and final evaluations that you may have to com-plete. It is important to hand in your paper-work regularly to meet the required course requirements.

On May 1, the grade 10 students will be at-tending Try-A-Trade in Lloydminster for the

throughout the weekend. But most im-portantly, the competed with sportsman-

FSL: Building constructive study habits

with your child

We have basic needs as humans – we must look after these basic needs first before we can effectively study! - Food, Water, sleep, physical activity. Ensure your child’s basic needs are all met to ensure they will be suc-cessful in their study habits! Sit down with your child and schedule an assigned study time each day. Routine is es-sential and you know your child’s schedule best. Carve out a time in each day to assign to study time. With setting a time each day to study, en-

sure your child has a space they continually use to study. This area should be free from distractions and allow them to feel comforta-ble and remain focused.

Follow up with your child on important dates, including exams, major assignments, and encourage them to use an agenda to en-sure they are prepared and meeting dead-lines. Have you connected with your school parent portal? Here you will be able to access infor-mation on your child’s attendance, grades, courses, homework, etc.

Benefits of Serving Others

Serving others can help children feel good about themselves, believing they can make a difference in the world. When children start to reach out and help others, their world grows and so does their confidence.

Benefits of Serving Others

Conversation starters with children: • What gets you excited about doing things for others? • How does it make you feel when you help in your family, school or neighbourhood? • How can we make a difference in the world? How can we as a family begin?

Benefits of Serving Others

Ways to serve as a family: You don’t need to do a large project to make a difference. Here are 5 simple tips to get started: 1. Visit residents at a nursing home. 2. Take a dog for a walk. 3. Organize a yard sale for charity. 4. Visit or call someone who can’t leave home. 5. Cat-sit. House-sit. Child-sit. Plant-sit.

Benefits of Serving Others Teaching the value of giving back: The best way to teach young people the value of helping others is to be a role model. Activities such as providing a meal to a new parent, driving a neighbor to an appointment, or babysitting can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
