Wow. True Story is a fun little book. The opening page depicts two cats, Buddy and Max as convicts in jail, and from there you just know the story is go-ing to be good. And it is. We follow the main character, a little boy, and his sister through a series of unfortunate house-hold mishaps with his defence always being “Dad, it wasn’t me. “ I’m sure any 5 year old can identify with those words, and I think every parent will end up turn-ing the pages repeatedly as their child asks to read the story every time they are ready for bed. Lorna Bennett’s masterful illustrations bring the fun story to life with each page filled to the brim with bright colours and exaggerated facial expres-sions. As referenced on the back of the book the story is a kind of “Boy Who Cried Wolf” tale set in a modern house-hold with the two innocent looking cats being the villains in the piece. Inspired by his two real life rescued cats, author Marty Chan delivers an entertaining story that will resonate with its intended audience and is sure to be a great seller for the local Edmonton author. Make sure you check out his website: www.martychan.com for news about his book launch in conjunction with the Edmonton Humane Society. I hope that more au-thors will take their cue and write about the marvels of owning a rescue animal. I’m sure Mary’s book will prove to be inspiring to many.

They say I was named Cassiopeia because of my unrivalled beauty, but you can call me Cassie, it’s not so pretentious. I have a great time with my foster brother and the guys at doggie

daycare, and quite enjoy the company of cats. I’m fine if you leave me at home, but I sure think it’s great when my people return. I love games, walks, treats,

cuddles…did I mention treats?!? My needs are simple, having a family to love and care for me. I am about 2yrs old and waiting!

My name is Copper and I am a 1.5yr old Shep X. I’m a really good boy who loves kids, other dogs and at-tention. I am happy, and well rounded. I am looking

for a permanent position in a home environ-ment. I have great companion skills, undying loyalty and can offer serious commitment. Wage is negotiable; room/board/love/ex-ercise is all I require. I am looking to be a foot warmer and best friend but will consider a position as door greeter, dining room floor cleaner or children’s face washer.

Harpy...what an awful name! Please adopt me and change it!!! I am a 1yr old sweetheart who loves children. I am a smart gal and love to learn new things. I would

do well with the jogging type...or maybe someone who wants to have the fastest dog at agility and fly ball. Just give me a job and we are good to go! I am good with other dogs, but I do need some work on my cat skills.

My name is Maggie and I am about 7yrs old. I am an Alaskan Husky, although I do love to run and play I am a low energy dog. I get along very well with both children and

other dogs, and I love snuggling up beside my special human. Do you have a home for me?

My name is Monte and I am a 1yr old Collie/Lab X. I have high energy and require a firm, but kind, hand. I have learned how to ride beside a bicycle, run on

a treadmill and I’ve even done some agility. I get along wonderfully with other dogs and love being with people. I was rescued last April in the snowfall when I was just 5wks old.

They call me Laddie and tell me I am about 2yrs old. I am a Rough Collie X and was rescued with my two puppies who were around 3mths old. I am a nurturing dog

and took great care of my puppies. I am an energetic and playful guy who loves two leg-gers of all sizes!

Dear Readers:

It seems we just got past black cats at Hallow-een and puppies under the tree at Christmas, yet here we are worrying about the holiday pet fads once again. Please do not buy baby chicks and bunnies as presents for the kids.

Baby chicks never stay small yellow or fl uffy, and careless pur-chasing of bunnies often end with adult rabbits being caged up and forgotten in small pens. Instead of adding to the problem please consider rescuing a spayed or neutered rabbit in des-perate need of a home from the EHS, The Mcdonald Family Animal Rescue or Hoppy Endings Rabbit Rescue.

We are pleased to feature an article on Puppy Scams this month on page 12. With all of the less than moral, but sadly common scams these days we hope this will help bring more awareness to those searching for a new pet. If you are partial to a certain breed of dog please keep in mind the many breed specifi c rescue organizations where you can often fi nd pure-bred pets in need of good homes. For a wonderful listing of breed specifi c rescues please visit the NASAP website ‘links’ page at www.nasap.ca/links.

Happy Easter!

I have been with SCARS for well over a year now and though my foster mom loves me to pieces, she just can’t adopt anymore! No one can understand why I am still here because I am the most beautiful boy ever

and try so hard to be good. Sometimes us larger mature guys have a hard time getting adopted but I know there is someone out there for me somewhere. For more info call SCARS (780) 466-7227

Rocco is the name they gave me but you can always just call me super duper handsome! I am a Husky/Collie X around 1yr old. I get along great with everyone (even the cats!)

and I am extremely gentle with children. I have quite a bit of energy and a whole lot of love!

Hello, I’m just a baby, only 9mths old. I’m so young they can’t even tell if I’m a boy or a girl yet but it doesn’t really matter, I’m a cute little Iguana either way. My owner surrendered me to ERAS so I could find a really good home. Keep in mind that even though I’m just a little feller right now, I’ll grow to be quite big and will require a very large cage.

There are two of us Star Agamas and we came from the same home as our young friend the Iguana. They told us we were born just last August so we’re pretty young too. We are hungry little bug eat-ing machines and we just love our worms and crickets! We are pretty small and won’t take up much room…maybe we can come live at your house?

I am a 9yr old Himalayan Seal Point named Baby. I know, I know, I’m too old for that name but it just stuck with me since I was a kitten. I am a beautiful girl who loves to

strut my stuff. I really enjoy people and want a home where I can just be my gorgeous self...what about yours???

Edmonton Reptile & Amphibian Society (ERAS)

Howdy, my name is Jimmy and I am 5yrs old. I am an Australian Cattle Dog (heeler)/Shep-herd X and I am already both crate and house trained. I am good with most dogs, great with people of all sizes and don’t seem to mind living around cats. I am super sweet and want badly to please but I do tend to be an alpha male. I like to get to know other male dogs slowly because I’m kind of used to being the boss.

I am a 6mths old Lab X named Buddy. I am very playful but they don’t consider me a high energy dog. Although young I am already house, crate and leash trained. I am a

very loving and sweet pup, but I do need some obedience training. I am currently living with cats, dogs and kids –I love them all!

The volunteers at SNAP named me Sam. I am 2.5yrs old, very affectionate and lovelovelove everyone! I am a high profile, attention seek-ing Poodle and have an intense need to be with people. I am fine with other dogs but my heart still lies with my two leggers so I would probably prefer no competition for lap space.

Tia is the name & being abso-lutely gorgeous is my game. I am a beautiful girl with grey smudges above my beautiful eyes, which by the way are two different colors. I love

to play with other felines and just can’t get enough cuddling in with humans. Can I be your Easter snuggle bunny?

My name is Sweetie...cause I’m just that! I am a 5yr old very friendly Retriever X who is good with people & other dogs. Somewhere in my past I was injured in the mouth, and as a result I kind of have a crooked smile. Everyone here says it makes me even more special and gives me character.

Mic & Mac are our names & we’re brothers. We look alike except Mic has some white patches. We are 4mth old boys who must stay together because we are truly inseparable and really love each other. We play well with other kittens, but we also enjoy our human friends. Is anyone out there interested in two handsome fellows to add to their family pictures???

They call my sweet furry face Cocoa! I am a 1yr old Shep-herd X and I am already house, crate and leash trained. I am also good with children and other dogs. I suppose I

could use some obedience training...but what teenager doesn’t??

Hey, I’m Sampson, and as you can tell from my name, I’m a GREYt big boy. My favorite thing is to be told how hand-some I am. I am terrific on leash, quite independent and do just fine alone. I am 6.5yrs old and like to be top dog, so I’m looking for a home with a female dog who will follow my lead, or even a home where I’m the only dog. I prefer a home with no cats. If you’re looking for a handsome, steady companion who loves to make his people proud, I’m

your man! Just call the number below and ask for the “Big Guy.”

Hello. I’m a senior Greyhound around 8.5yrs old named Gracie who still has a lot of life to live and tons of love to give! I love playing with stuffies, going for walks, and getting belly rubs (but not necessarily in that order!). I am patient and polite. I have an eye condition called Pannus, but it’s well managed with inexpensive ointment and I know I need the medicine, so I’m really cooperative.I desperately want my own foreverhome so I can enjoy my golden years. I won’t

ask for much, and you’d definitely get all my love and devotion.

My name is Honey because I’m so sweet! I’m just 1yr old and I am already halter trained. I’m not just a pretty face I’m very smart and learn quickly too! I have also ridden in a trailer and I’m a registered Paint. My registered name is HT Titan Pocodee Jazz (phew –what a mouthful!). I really like people and cookies too. I still have some grow-ing up to do before I’m old

enough to ride but I’d really like a home to call my own!

Hi my name is Zimba and I’m available as a companion horse. I had an injury when I was young and as a result I am ‘unsound’ for riding. I am however happy, friendly and healthy. I would love to be a pasture mate to another horse and a good buddy to you! I’m quite stunning, they tell me I am a blue roan quarter horse.

Hi my name is Travis and I’m a TB/Holsteiner. I’m a big handsome boy around 15yrs old. I have mainly been ridden English and not too much over the last few years but I also used to jump. My dad’s name is Silberfiel and I need an experienced rider who can handle me as I can be a bit strong!

Hi my name is Chanel and I am now available for adoption. Wild Rose Equine Rescue has just started me ‘under saddle’ and I’m now getting ridden almost every day. I’m very patient and just learning what leg and hand cues mean. I’m cautious but not spooky -I can even go on trail rides with no other horses! I’d be good for an intermediate or experienced rider who could finish my training.

I’m a 14wk old Boxer/Shepherd X named Dasher. My foster mom keeps telling me I’m such a pretty girl. Not only that but I’m playful, cuddly and love playing with other dogs. I keep wearing out the resident dogs! I adore playing hide ‘n seek and always come out from wherever I’m hiding when I hear that certain tone from my foster mom. If you want to meet me you will have to come and find me.

My name is Athena. I’m a very pretty de-signer X under 1yr old. I’m very bright, a quick learner and love to play. I have a loving nature, maybe I should have been a nurse as I’m most concerned about other dogs’ welfare. I am looking for a loving home I can call my own forever and ever. Do you have room in yourheart for me?

8 pet rescue magazine April 2009 local stories...local people...local pets

That’s all that was left by the people who dumped a new mother and her nine puppies on the side of a country road during a cold snap in early March. A call was received about

a young mother dog franticly jumping around the roadside, running to and from her babies in the ditch. She was desperate, every in-stinct on alert but still helpless to keep all her babies warm and safe. Their eyes are not yet open and with only a thin blue sheet to separate her newborns from the snow, and no protection from predators or the freezing temperatures, she could not even leave long enough to fi nd a safe haven let alone transport one at a time. With the day already growing dark and the snow starting to fall Second Chance Animal Rescue volunteer, Janice Johnston, rushed out to try and fi nd them. The mother dog, Teri, and her 8 surviving pups, are now currently in foster care with Second Chance Animal Rescue and looking for new homes.

It is heartbreaking to hear story after story of domestic pets being abandoned in the countryside or left on the side of the highway like garbage...it’s surprising our society has not stopped littering to begin with, but to literally dispose of dependent pets in the middle of nowhere is shameless. It’s diffi cult to imagine how confused these animals must be while they watch car after car drive by, or how terrifying it would be in unfamiliar surroundings suddenly having to fend for themselves. Innocent faces watching the road, hoping and having faith that the centre of their little worlds will still return.

To think that so many pet owners just don’t know any better is a hard sell. The term “out of sight, out of mind” sure rings convenient, though how anyone could sleep at night knowing the suffering and terror they have caused to their pet is beyond comprehension. Yes circumstances do change; people sometimes have to move, allergies do develop, jobs or fi nances are lost and sometimes they just aren’t the right size or color. No matter the circumstances, it’s very sad to think of how many people are able to bury their heads in the sand and abandon their living responsibilities.

Harsh judgement you say? Not really. Harsh is what volunteers, bylaw offi cers and rescue workers have to witness when they pick up the pieces others have so carelessly tossed aside.

Harsh is when you watch a grown man show his 10yr old son how to abandon a box of puppies in the middle of nowhere, or when you see a 40lb dog (later named Princess) as she is thrown out of a vehicle on a freeway.

JustJust One One

Harsh is when volunteers drive for hours to pick up a puppy in the ditch with road rash, a swollen eye and a busted jaw because the people who took hours to drive out to a remote area could not take another 10 seconds to slow down.

Harsh is when you rush out in the middle of our cold Alberta winter because a caller says there is an injured dog in a rural ditch who has not moved for days. Only to fi nd on arrival that the poor mother (later named Faith) was not injured, but guarding her frozen puppy.

Harsh is fi nding one senior pet after another with not even a gas station within a few hours drive. Worse yet, when you can tell they have part of a family right up till their fi nal car ride. “Wanna go for a car ride? Huh? Do ya? Do ya?”

Now, as we have been discussing harsh, we can’t stop there. As sad as they may be, those are all the happy stories, mainly of successful rescue. It is devastating to think of how many pets are not spotted or reported. How many fi nally fall in physical defeat, are attacked and killed by predators, get hit by vehicles and left where they land, get shot, succumb to the elements or crawl into the bush hungry, dehydrated, and exhausted never to get up again.

Dependency is a trait shared by many in our community. Our children, our seniors, and, whether some dislike it in the same sentence or not, our pets. There are resources available to help re-home, pounds and shelters where you can drop animals off, and even some rescue organizations that will intake surrendered pets. Please do not fool yourself, if you abandon your pet you have subjected them to far greater hazards of cruelty, neglect, fear and often a long suffering and lonely death.

When searching the internet you can fi nd hundreds of sites contain-ing useful information. Of the many we viewed, we found www.citykitties.org to have a great, well rounded guide to re-homing pets, and not just cats! Just click on ‘Resources’ and choose ‘Responsibly Rehoming a Cat’. They offer many invaluable tips on advertising, how to screen potential adopters, important warnings of what not to do and even a downloadable adoption package with a sample adoption contract.

Please be responsible pet guardians and ensure your pets care and safety for their lifetime.

They call me Lady and I am about 8yrs old. I like to spend time with my friends Apollo and Breeze, it’s so much fun to run around! I am very good on leash and like to explore

puddles. Please call and take me home.

Everyone calls me Tabatha. I am a very sweet 4mth old Col-lie/Lab/Shep X. I love to run around the shelter and then sit in one of the office chairs. I

really don’t like my leash –I would rather be carried! I am pretty skinny but I am being fed lots, so hopefully I will gain some weight and catch up soon.

I am a 9yr old beautiful Collie X named Breeze. I am very good with other dogs but a little stand-off-ish with people until I get to know them. My former owner recently died

and it has been very difficult on me because we were very close.

Teka is my name and having fun is my game! I am a 4yr old Miniature American Eskimo/Jack Russell Terrier X. I love going for car rides but I am a bit of a snoop; I like to explore the entire car! I am not good with small children, especially boys as they scare me. Can I be your love bug?

I am a cute 2yr old Shepherd X named Apollo. I am well social-ized with other dogs and I love to play ball at the park. I am really hoping to find a new home soon so I can start my

new life. Please call so we can play ball!

We are 1yr old Coon Hound/Shepherd X’s. I, Zyra, am very sweet, good on leash and love running around with my brother, but often I play shy with strang-ers. Squirt is strong on leash

and just loves to be with his humans. I need to be securely crated when home alone as I suffer from separation anxiety.

My name is Terry…aren’t I cute? I am an Airedale X and love attention, trips to the park and riding shot gun! My favorite thing is cookies...YUMMY! I am very wiggly

when I am excited but I don’t jump!

Forget Me Not Cat Sanctuary

My name is Dixie and I am about 3yrs old. I like people’s company and being petted but I’m not much of a cuddler. I am very quiet but do still have a playful streak in me. I need

to be the only cat in my new home. Maybe it could be yours?

Hi. My name is Murphy and I am a very handsome dude. I am about 2yrs old and while I tolerate the other cats at my foster Mom’s, I would rather be by myself or

with only one other cat. I am so affectionate and love to snuggle in your lap and watch TV or be brushed. I am a very calm and laid back kinda guy. I’m hard not to love!!!

Hi, I’m Becky. I am about 1yr old. I’m a tiny girl with the prettiest face and although I was timid when rescued it only took me a few days to come around. Once I did I sure made

up for lost time because now I love attention! I love being petted and playing. I get along well with the rest of the gang here but would love my own place.

Hi, my name is Fritzie and I’m about 3-4yrs old. After spending a lot of time in the cold, I was very lucky on Christmas Eve to wander right into the arms of a kind lady

from the pound. They kept me and my pound buddies warm, fed us and then they sent me to the sanctuary where I grew healthy and strong. I get along well with all the friends I’ve made here but I would love to go live with my very own family.

I’m Maggie and I’m from a litter of the best behaved kittens that you ever did meet. We are all look-ing for forever homes, and I’d really like to be adopted with my brother Whiskers. We are just like book-ends! I am a dainty little girl and new situations leave me a little timid at first, but given a chance to get to know and trust you I become my little 9mth old affectionate self.

My name is Casper. I am a male, about 6mths old with short hair. I am a bit shy at first but once I get to know you I am very loving and affectionate. I

love belly rubs and will follow you around and flop at your feet to get one. I am laid back and get along fine with others cats. I would make a great addition to your family.

I’m Sadie, also Casper’s sister. I am short haired and solid black. I am a dainty little girl and extremely shy. My siblings and I were rescued from

living under the steps of a house. Although it is much warmer and nicer living in a house, I need some extra time to adjust to living with people. I am very quiet and will need a home without kids or dogs. Do you have it in your heart to give me the love and patience I need?

My name is Ivy and I’m the cutest little fur ball of a cat with a button nose. Why I was left to fend for myself, I’ll never know. My favorite pastime is to have a snooze knowing

that someone who loves me is nearby. I have a calm and peaceful disposition. Might I be the best friend you are looking for?

I’m a Husky X named Steel. I seem to be a young guy and so far I just ig-nore the other dogs. I’m a little shy at first but I love to get attention. I’m still new so please check back on the SCARS website for more information.

I am a Retriever X named Pipa and I am about 2.5yrs old. I have lots of en-ergy and have been great with other dogs, but I am not crazy about cats. I listen well and love to run and

I am a wonder-ful and loving girl named Puff. I am a 1yr old Terrier (or Schnauzer?) X. I love to cuddle, play, and eat. I can be a bit of an adventurer so

I need a home with a secure yard for me to play in. I get along great with other dogs and I’m also good with those cat thingys. In fact ‘Squeak the kitten’ is one of my foster home roomies!

Funny enough, my name is Fluffy! I came to NASAP terribly matted and needed to be closely shaved. I’m a 10yr old healthy and affectionate boy. I have a quiet personal-

ity and love attention. I especially love to lay on your chest for a snooze. I need a quiet home and can’t wait to show you how great of a companion I can be!

I’m Chica! I love to chase shadows and play with my toy mouse. I’m quite the cud-dler and really love to curl up on laps. I also like to tell you all about my day and how

much I missed you when you return home. I love to be brushed and would adore a home with mature people and friendly animal friends. I need special food and daily medica-tion (they are inexpensive and available at local vet clinics), but I take the medication very easily with food.

My name is Maddy and I am a sweet 2yr old Beagle who was surrendered by my owner. I am a friendly dog who loves company of all ages however I do not like cats or small pets such as rabbits, birds, or rodents. I am not a big fan of my crate but I will use it if I have to. I would love to go to a home where someone is home with me and preferably with kids and dogs to play with. Like many Beagles, my listening and recall skills are not great, but with patience and some obedience classes we could overcome these issues together. I have a calm, happy, gentle temperament and I am only asking to be loved.

I’m the hand-some 10yr old guy in the photo, Tigger. My teeth were terribly painful when I came to NASAP and I had to have 6 removed! I’m now in great spirits and feel-

ing fantastic. I’m happy to be healthy and I’m looking forward to being placed in my forever home with a lucky family!

My name is Sophie and I’m a delight-ful little girl! I was found by the side of the highway lost, alone, and very cold. The skin abrasions on my nose and head have now

healed. I’m only about 8mths old. I’m social, crate and house trained, love to play with other dogs (and the cat if he’s game!), and enjoy all human company. I haven’t spent any time with children, but I think it would be fine if they treat me with respect. I look like a min-iature Lab but I have a wiry coat like a Terrier. I stand around 18 inches at the shoulder and weigh about 24lbs.

Hey...anyone out there look-ing for a smart handsome young dog to join their fam-ily? I’m Galen, a 1yr old Labrador/Re-triever X with a big heart and a steady person-

ality. I’m just as happy to cuddle up with you on the couch as to join you for long walks or camping trips. I’m easy going, alright with cats, and I get along just fine with other dogs. I listen well and try to please. I’ll need exercise on a regular basis of course, so if you take me home you’ll have to dust off your walking shoes and get ready for the off leash park!

Greetings! I’m Pumpkin Souf-flé. I’m a long haired 2yr old boy with the world’s longest whiskers! I’m an easy going guy and I start purring as soon as you look at me. I do well in

new situations, like to be picked up and love attention! I also love to play with toy mice and get up to all of the high spots. I hope I can be your best bud for life!

Hullo, I’m Sphinx and I was found abandoned in the country-side. I am a Lab/Hound X around 6mths old with a very loving nature. I am quiet, crate and house

trained, and love to play with toys…I never had any toys before! I enjoy the company of dogs in general. I’m looking forward to obe-dience classes and going for lots of long walks and romps at the off leash park.

My name is Mya and I am a very beautiful Retriever X. I am only 10mths old and I already know many com-mands. I am very well man-nered, good with other dogs

and cats, house trained, and can be crated if necessary. I am looking for a new home where I will get lots of love, regular groom-ing for my silky coat, and plenty of exercise. I have been raised with children ten years of age and over.

Hi I’m Wilson and I’m at NASAP because my owner is moving to an apartment. I’m house and crate trained (though my favourite place to sleep is on your bed with you!) and

I’m pretty well mannered indoors. I love going to the off leash park and I have great recall. I’m a loveable kind of guy and my cute scruffy face is pretty hard to resist, so I’ve been told anyway! I don’t often get the chance to look in a mirror!

Buyer Beware, a phrase most of us know, but some do not heed. More and more prospective pet owners are falling prey to internet scammers. We thought, in this issue, we’d bring you three of the most common internet pet scams seen today.

An Overpayment Pet Scam. This is similar to other scams relating to other products and services. A scam-mer answers a pet ad that’s been placed on the internet by a pet seller. The pet seller outlines the costs for the pet and the scammer forwards a cheque in an amount that exceeds the pet owners expectation of the agreed price. When the pet seller contacts the scammer to let them know of the mistake, the scammer asks the pet seller to forward the difference back to them via wire transfer which is non-traceable. By the time the pet seller discovers the cheque is fraudulent, they are out the excess money and sadly the pet if they’ve already shipped it.

Nigerian Pet ScamIn this case, the scammer places a pet for sale or pet for free ad, or creates a credible looking website to lure unsuspecting victims. Usually the pets are purebred or designer breeds that are being sold at discounted prices, or are free due to many concocted reasons. When the prospective pet buyer contacts the scammer they are given the total cost of acquiring the pet, which usually includes any or all of the following: cost of pet if not free, shipping, spay/neuter and vaccinations. Scammers are very creative in being able to drum up fi ctitious reasons to keep “bumping” the costs. They usually ask for a down payment and shipping costs via wire transfer, which again is non-traceable. Once you have wired the money, they will either delay the so called shipping of the pet to extract more money due to other “fees” or the prospective pet buyer will never hear from them again, their money is lost and the pet never arrives.

Bait and Switch:If you fall for a scammer’s breeder site or classifi ed advertise-ment, the scammer in all likelihood will send you a picture of

internetPuppy Scams

a healthy pet that you think you’re getting. However, there is no guarantee you will be shipped the pet in the picture. Scammers will take large amounts of money for pets that are in very poor health or are from puppy mills. They bank on you not checking them out, or trying to send this cute, help-less, puppy back to them, that’s if you get the puppy in the fi rst place.

The best way to avoid internet pet scammers is NOT to buy a puppy off the internet it’s as simple as that. Find a reputable breeder in your area and go and meet the puppy that’s going to become a part of your family. If you must purchase from a distance research the breed and ask questions that a breeder should know, ask for references, check out the breeder with their local Better Business Bureau and with the CKC and AKC, although they can’t guarantee quality they can advise if a breeder is registered. Pay using a traceable method and never via wire transfer. (For example: Wire transfers can be sent to a location in Ontario, but the scammer could pick up the money in BC.)

If you are a breeder of puppies then do not ship a puppy or return any overpayments until you’re sure that your purchaser’s cheque has cleared for your puppy’s sake if nothing else.

Last but not least, check with your local rescue organizations fi rst to see if they have a puppy or dog that could become part of your family, or if you are partial to a certain breed, then check for breed specifi c rescue organizations, after all, the rescues are just as deserving of a loving home. prm

Hoppy Endings Rabbit Rescue (HERR)Hi my name is Bert. I’m looking for a new home for myself and my brother Ernie. We’re 5yrs old, easygoing, both neutered and best buds. We must go to a home together, we would be very sad to be separated. They tell us we are broken orange Holland Lops.

Hi my name is Finnegan and I’ve been at Hoppy Endings pretty much my whole life! I came here when I was just 8wks old. Luckily they found me a nice foster home where I get lots of attention, but it still isn’t the same thing as having a home to call your own! I am a “dwarf” and I come neutered…whatever that means!

Hi my name is Wally and I am told I am an “orange torte” colored bunny. I’ve been at Hoppy Endings Rabbit Rescue for almost eight whole months and they’re very nice to me, but I’d really like to find a forever home. I too am neutered and we all come with a free vet examination (with Dr. Marcia Waye).

Hi I’m Priscilla! I’m a big girl, they call me a Flemish Giant. Just like other big bunnies, I’m easy to hold and very laid back. I love to play and run around. I get along with children and kitties, but I’ve never met a dog before. I’m pretty sure I’d like a dog as long as he was gentle with me and people watched us to make sure of that!

Hi My name is Ernie and I am 5yrs old. My brother Bert and I are a wonderful pair full of entertainment and as you can see very handsome! We love to have the freedom to play and run around...do you have room for a dapper duo like us?.

I think my foster fam-ily changed my name from “Poco” to “Pogo” because I jump just like a pogo stick. I am a Poodle around 2yrs old. I get along great with people, have no issues with cats, and I love getting out and playing with all of my doggie

friends. I am looking for a family willing to give me all the hugs and kisses you can imagine, and be willing to go back to basic training with me. I do need a little help with house training but I am smart and promise to learn fast!

PAWS For Life

Cosmo here! I don’t have a lot of time to talk about myself because I am a really busy guy. I am a 1yr old Poodle X. I am a very unique and friendly boy with an outgo-ing personality.

I love receiving attention and will bounce right into your arms and give you the biggest cuddle ever –but it can’t last too long cause I have things to do and people to see!

I am Trigger. They tell me I am a young Border Collie X but all I know for sure is that I am a handsome devil! I would be a great dog for a family that could give me a “job” to do. I love playing with the agility equipment and may excel at herding.

My name is Molly! I am a Lab X and I am about 2yrs old. I am currently living with my foster family on a farm and think I would make a great outdoor or indoor family

member. My foster mom even thinks that I might do well at agility. I live in a home with three children and I get along great with other animals; my best friend is a cat!

Hi there, my name is Sadie and I am a little shy. I need some time to get to know you before I am will-ing to trust you but if you give me some space we will be best friends in no

time! I am a Bull Mastiff X and I’m roughly 1.5yrs old. I always aim to please and require a family that is patient and willing to work with me. I love playing with balls, shaking a paw, and playing with my friends.

Hi, I am a German Shep-herd and I am roughly 1yr old. I am looking for a wonderful family willing to take me on walks and work with me. I need a job to do, even if that is

just working on my obedience. Ooops I forgot to give you my name! I am Cleopatra, like the beautiful and charismatic queen of Egypt.

I am a new addition to the PAWS family named Tater. I have only been here a few days so they don’t know a lot about me yet. I am a Miniature Pinscher who is between 1-3yrs

old. Words cannot explain how adorable I truly am.

Aries: March 21 - April 19This may be an upsetting month as old friends and family surface around the 10th, but history is just that...history.

Forgive and forget. Be selfish and stop hurting yourself by focusing on furballs from the past!

You are not alone in feeling this period of uncertainty and stress. It is difficult to keep the wolf from the door in tough

times but you must stay positive and think constructive thoughts. Hang in there, everything has a cycle.

Puppy love is in the air! Who can resist those furry faces and adorable antics? Don’t let your people make any rash

decisions though, all pets require a serious commitment and should be adopted for life.

Your spring itch will finally be scratched as the outdoors call your people. BBQ’s, long walks, open-air games and

camping are all possibilities. It’s also a great time to concentrate on your health and tone up your muscles.

Leo pets are sometimes known to have a domineering personality and you must keep that in mind when hanging

with the neighbourhood pack. No one likes to spend time with a bully so be sure to keep your self in check!

You may be facing some big decisions this month so remem-ber to take some time to chew things over and consider all

of the possible consequences. Look ahead, weigh your options and try to think realistically.

Cancer: June 21 - July 22

Leo: July 23 - August 22

Virgo: August 23 - September 22

Special efforts must be made to accept that your people are being a little neglectful this month. They are preoccupied

with cleaning closets, garage sales and yard work but keep faith they will make it up to you soon.

Ok...you messed up! Don’t hide or burrow under the couch, this is a time of growth and humility. Travel forward and

learn from your mistakes. Your people will be more understanding and supportive then expected

Things are going well right now, your devotion and hard work are starting to pay off. If you want it, the world really

is your oyster. Use caution though, you still must maintain an end goal of staying happy as a clam!

Time to go hog wild and push out some stored up energy as the days are finally long enough for decent walks at night.

Careful though –using the once valid excuse of being destructive due to lack of exercise may be in the past!

Taurus: April 20 - May 20

Gemini: May 21 - June 20

When everyone begins to point fingers at the new guy this month try to be the one who stands out in support. Instead

of joining the pack, consider taking them under your wing and guid-ing them in the right direction.

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19

Aquarius: January 20 - February 18

Pisces: February 19- March 20

Libra pets are known to have the odd stubborn mood where their paws get planted a little too firmly. Try to stay aware

and make certain you are not hurting your own cause by being stubborn as a mule.

Libra: September 23 - October 22

HoroscopesWhat’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month?

Grande Prairie SPCA

Hello! Cherish is my name and if you adopt me I know you will cherish me forever! I am about 8mths old and as pret-ty as a flower! I love to run and leap and play. People

are my favorite cause they pet and cuddle me. I hope you like what you read and come see me soon!

My name is Angel and I have been here since Novem-ber, 2008 and I am beginning to wonder if this will be my forever home. I don’t know why I’m still here. I am so pretty and my personality is very sweet, calm and quiet. I am very clean and don’t mind other cats. I am putting my two front paws together to pray for a new home.

I am Celine and I was born here at the shelter. I am about 4mths old. I know I am a good girl because the SPCA staff always tell me so…but I don’t understand why

I am still here. Do you know why?

Hi, the name’s Jinxy and I am awesome! I am about 2yrs old and I love ear scratches and belly rubs. I also really enjoy being snuggled and really just any attention at all! I have been here for about 2 months now, but I know my perfect match will walk through the door one of these days!

Hello! I’m Chip and I am about 9mths old. I went to foster care for some extra TLC and people time but I’m back at the shelter now and ready for adop-tion. So if you are wondering

where to find such a handsome furry little boy, come to the Grande Prairie SPCA!

Georgia here! I am Cherish’s best gal pal! I am about 9mths old and love to play or hang out with all of my SPCA friends. It’s really sad when I have to say goodbye to them when they get a new home, but I know I will get my turn…it could be any day now!

HI! HI! HI! My name is Stoli and I love you! I am about 1yr old and love to go for walks. I am a very good boy, great on leash and already know some basic commands. I

have been here since mid January and I’m really hoping I will get my turn for a new home soon….who couldn’t love this happy face?

My name is Lucky and there is a story behind my name. I was found during a -40 cold spell. When I came in they weren’t sure if I would come around. I was really, really cold and soooo tired. The SPCA staff put me on a nice warm blanket with a heating pad, but after a couple of days I was still not improving. I had pretty bad frostbite and part of my tail had to be amputated. It was decided that I needed extra TLC and one of the staff members took me home. Well that seemed to do the trick! I started coming out of my shell and I am healing well. Now I am waiting for my new “Forever Home”. BTW if you go on Facebook and go to the SPCA site you can see a video of me!
