Spring fever also hits the restaurants, as patios open and sidewalk cafés fill up at noon. Would you like to eat some deliciously fresh vegetables this summer, grown in your own garden? Now’s the time to get to work. In April, or as soon as the soil is no longer waterlogged, roll up your sleeves and get out your shovel and garden fork.

Preparing the soil is a crucial step. Loosen the soil to aerate it and care-fully remove any weeds. If you want to produce big, beautiful vegetables, be sure to add compost and organic fertilizer, such as a seaweed fertiliz-

er or bone meal. One thing is sure: improving the quality of the soil in your garden will guarantee a better harvest.

To sow seeds or plant seedlings? It’s your decision, but if you choose plants you’ll have to wait until all danger of ground frost has passed before starting your vegetable garden, or use a cold frame to protect them. If you decide to sow seeds directly outdoors, you’ll find lots of seeds that thrive in cool weather at your garden centre.

But beware: seeds have to be sown at the right moment according to the hardiness zone you live in. Here again, you should only sow your seeds when all risk of ground frost is passed.

If your patience is being put to the test, why not start your seeds indoors? During April you can start preparing your garden with all kinds of seeds: tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, brocco-li, and the list goes on.

For a garden brimming with vegetables, be sure to water and weed throughout the summer months. If you get busy now, you can look for-ward to crunching into your very first carrot in only a few short weeks!

Spruce up your homeWinter is almost over and the cold weather has probably left its mark all over your home, inside and out. Now’s the time to get out your tools!

If you’ve noticed that your windows are poorly sealed, this is the time to remedy the problem. Replace your old windows with more energy efficient models. Inspect your home and identify places where water is likely to infiltrate. Make any necessary repairs without delay.

Did you notice that lots of icicles formed on your evestroughs over the winter? That is caused by heat loss and the situation has to be corrected. Ensure that there is adequate insulation in the attic. Take this opportunity to also check that the gutters are fixed securely, and clean them if they’re full of leaves.

Once these basic jobs are completed, you could tackle some renovations to improve the comfort and look of your home. After all, spring fever always involves a desire for change. Perhaps you’d like to spruce up the deck or add a sun porch to the house. Be sure to plan these projects well in advance so that you can relax and make the most of the warm spring sunshine.

Criss-crossing the countryside on roads and bike paths is an appealing idea, now that the longer summer days are fast approaching. Not only is cycling a fun activity that gets you out in the fresh air and seeing the world around you, it’s also a great way to get fit.

Many types of bikes are available on the mar-ket. So, before making a choice, you’d better ask yourself a few questions about how you’re planning on using it. In the city, urban bikes are ideal, as they feature an upright riding posi-tion that allows you better visibility. Hybrid bikes are great for exploring bicycle paths. They are designed to carry transport bags and have several gears to facilitate climbing hills.

There is also a wide range of specialized bicycles, designed for the cycling fanatics out there. Those include mountain bikes, downhill bikes, cyclocross bikes, and road bikes.

Don’t hesitate to ask for advice from a bike dealer or sports equipment expert about an appropriate bike for you. Expect him or her to ask you about the way you’ll use the bike, and then about the right size of frame, seat, and handlebars.
