People live in a smaller homes for a variety of reasons. Some live in a smaller home so they can be right in the thick of things in a city or urban center. Others scale back on living space in an e ort to save money. But storage space in small quarters is often at a premium, and thinking creatively is a necessity to keep the home tidy and items out of view.
The rst step is to sort items and get organized. Then you can nd a place for everything.
• add shelves. Increase cabinet & closet space by adding shelves into them. This may double or even triple the amount of usable space, especially if you customize the shelving to t storage containers you use to store everything from shoes to craft items.
• opt for dual-purpose furniture.
Benches with lids that lift up and sofas that convert into guest beds. An ottoman is a great place to store extra blankets and linens, while a trunk or crate with a sturdy top can be used in lieu of a traditional co ee table to keep books or board games.
• think vertically. When oor space is at a premium, you may need to look up for storage. Frequently used pots and pans can be hung from a decorative rack in your kitchen. Use magnets on jars to store a spice rack on the wall near the stove. Racks above cabinets or on doors can be used to store everything from shoes to jewelry to toiletries. Shelving in children’s rooms can store lesser used toys away from the oor. Empty walls are valuable real estate in a small home, and tall bookshelves can house a number of di erent things.
• take advantage of oddly shaped crevices. If you have space under a staircase or a spot by a dormer or in an attic eave, use the space to store items. You may need to get creative, such as adding a door and small closet into the staircase.
• use see-through storage containers.Plastic storage bins are neater and more stackable than boxes. See-through bins enable you to quickly nd items. Clear storage containers work in the refrigerator, too. You can more easily spot leftovers,
and uniform stacking containers free up more room for bulkier items.
• make use of space beneath your bed.A bed frame with built-in drawers is the perfect place to keep bed linens and out-of-season clothes. Beds can be raised on blocks to create more space underneath for storing rolling plastic containers and even seldom-used suitcases.
• opt for an armoire. Armoires can be used in dining spaces or in dens to store items out of sight. An armoire can be used when retro tted with a pull-out shelf as a laptop desk, storing all o ce items behind closed doors when not needed.
• improve storage in the bathroom. Try to choose a vanity that has under-the-sink storage so you will have a place to store some toiletries. Home improvement centers sell cabinets and etageres that can be placed above the toilet tank as a storage space for bathroom items. In the shower, hang a second tension-loaded shower curtain rod on the inside of the shower enclosure that can be used to hold bags of kids bath toys and other toiletries, keeping them o the tub ledges.
When you think creatively, you can maximize storage space even in a small home.

on buying a new vehicle! Are you getting a share of that pie?
Campbell River Mirror readers are set to spend millions over the next 12 months. We know because we asked them in a series of wide-ranging interviews staged by Pulse Research, a company with 30 years experience in asking the right questions.
51,895 will park a new car on their driveway, 32,312 will house a sport ute in their garage, while another 28,395 will opt for a truck out front. Most people surveyed knew what kind of wheels they would be looking for and what they were prepared to pay. The sticker price range for most is $25-$30,000. However, premium car sellers will be pleased that 13,708 plan to spend an average of $45,000 on one of their products. Another 7,883 will shell out an average of $64,413 for refined vehicles in the $50-$75,000 price range. In addition, 2,937 more will spend an average of $82,448 on luxury marques. An eco-conscious 11,750 households will fork out more than $30 grand for a hybrid or electric vehicle. Utilitarian minivans top the shopping list at 9,791 homes, with budgets a shade under $30,000.We discovered that readers would spend another $2 billion on car servicing, preventive maintenance, oil changes and after-market products. Good news for used car sales: 105,750 households are prepared to spend $1.69 billion on pre-owned, nearly new.

It’s not a comprehensive list but a look at some key market seg-ments, from which our featured writers have each made five picks. Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider any other vehi-cles. The team members have picked examples that have caught their eye this year to help you start the car conversation at home. owning a car. Once you have a vehicle in mind, get an insurance quote. Regular maintenance costs are easily figured but some cars can be very expensive if parts have to be brought in from around the world.Once you have a handle on the above, you can narrow your choice. It is important you like the looks of the second most expensive purchase of your life. However, make sure it serves its intended purpose by answering some ques-tions. Typically, how many people do you need to transport and how far? Is there enough stowage space in the cabin and the trunk or luggage compartment? Do you need V8 power or will an economical four-cylinder suffice? Now go and kick some tires at a variety of dealerships and consider multiple brands because they all have much to offer.

Tugging at the tails of top selling trucksIf there is one segment of the auto business that takes dynamite to get people to change brands, it’s the full-size pickup truck category,I’m sure most of us know of someone who is a “Ford guy” or “Chevy diehard” owner, and getting him or her to move to a new truck would be almost impossible. It wasn’t until the last Toyota Tundra was introduced in 2007 that Toyota was a real con-tender. That 2007 Tundra and this refreshed 2014 model are designed, en-gineered and even built in America, helping to pull loyal domestic buyers away. The Tundra is even as capable as many of the domestic brands but in some ways it still has a way to go to truly be an alternative to Ford, GM and Ram.
LooksAs part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille. The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, fram-ing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum. The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers.
InsideJust as the outside was redesigned to have a unique character for each trim, the inside mimics this idea. The Platinum model I tested is covered with a diamond pattern, or quilted look used on the leather seatbacks, side door inserts and dash front panel. It
is a step up from the lower trims but not nearly as supple and luxurious as the new batch of interiors from Ram and GM. Those trucks, in particular, have almost luxury-sedan interiors that make the driver forget they are in a truck. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers.
DrivePowering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines. The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the
number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort. The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have im-proved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride.
VerdictThe Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class. What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domes-tic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic.
The LowdownPower: 4.6L V8 with 310hp or 5.7L V8 with 381hpFill-up: 15.8L/11.0L/100km (city/highway 5.6L) Sticker price: $26,750-$54,000

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight
brands like Ford, GM or Ram?
Cracking Canada’s small car conundrumGENEVA, Switzerland - Small cars are huge here in Europe, if not in size certainly in numbers.Everywhere you turn, it seems there is either a Ford Fiesta or an Opel Astra (the General Motors subsidiary) about to cross your path. If it is not those examples, there are any number of other similar sized economy cars from the likes of Citroen, VW, and Peugeot buzzing by. Micro cars such as the tiny Smart, with which we are fa-miliar, and even smaller vehicles zip into roadside parking spots where previously only a motor-cycle would park.My two-prong mission at the Geneva Motor Show was to view small cars we might see sometime soon and others we never will see but wish we could! Then ponder whether small cars will ever catch on here in the way they have in Europe. There was something familiar about the first car I encountered in the giant Palexpo show buildings. Ah yes, a European version of the trusty Honda Civic – Canada’s hottest seller in that market segment. I am sure Honda Canada would sell more if they resembled the very hot Type R concept, which is destined to be a racer. Yes, the new North American Civic is sportier than the last generation but the Euro versions always seem that bit sharper in design.Next up was the Mazda Hazumi hatchback, expected successor to the current Mazda2 and
likely to adopt the same numeric moniker. The concept vehicle has an all-new 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel engine. Citroen no longer sells in North America though periodically we hear rumours of a return by the French manufacturer and its home rivals, Peugeot and Re-nault. Their lines are so different to the often indistinguishable small cars we get. Some of the French creations are positively funky and I found myself gaw-ping at such an example in the new Citroen C4 Cactus. It’s designed to challenge the likes of the Ford Focus and the VW Golf. It uses lightweight materials ex-tensively, including an aluminum hood, which means it sips gas. The rubberized pads along the side would be perfect for people
who regularly have close encounters with garage doorframes!General Motors looks to penetrate the difficult younger buyer marked with its Opel/Vaux-hall Adam. It’s dressed up in interesting colours but it’s what is under the hood that makes it really interesting. It has a variety of bigger engines as options but its smallest engine is a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder gas engine, mated to a six-speed manual trans-mission, with the pulling power of 1.6-litre power plant. Fuel consumption is expected to be a miserly 4.5 L/100 km (combined city highway). It may show up here in some form but right now GM has more than its fair share of small cars.
So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substan-tially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1.It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong.

From rather ordinary to rather extraordinaryTampa, Florida – Being the best at something is an achievement, and doing it repeatedly is impressive. The Honda Civic’s 16-year streak as the best selling passenger car in Canada is nothing short of astounding. For the introduction the 2014 Civic, Honda chose usually sunny and hot Tampa, to introduce their latest update. It was sunny but anything from hot, with overnight temperatures near freezing. Honda has been improving the Civic continuously since the 7th generation model was introduced as a 2012 mod-el. Last year, for 2013, they updated the styling, handling and interior of the 2013 model and now for 2014 they are at it again.
LooksThe styling focus for 2014 is on the coupe. Roughly 15 per cent of all Civics are sold as a coupe, the most dominant player in the small coupe market. Last year, this sedan received updates to the front and rear styling to help make it look more upscale and sophisticated, and this year the coupe gets a similar update to the front and back, but the changes are meant to provide a sporti-er look with a bit more aggression. The most aggressive version of both
the sedan and coupe is the SI model that gets an even more forceful grille and front bumper design plus a rear spoiler and lower air diffuser. Wheel sizes have also changed with the regular coupe receiving 16-inch wheels, up from 15-inches, and the SI now bumps the size from 17-inches to 18-inches.
InsideOne of the reasons that the Civic is the best selling car in Canada is the practical, yet sporty interior in both the sedan and coupe. Many people, including me, didn’t initially like the split dash with the speedometer on the top and the ta-chometer on the bottom, but over time this design has proven to be a winner. I was wrong. The split design now incorporates more information to see without having to take your eyes off the road. The trip computer and other functions like radio station information are just below the front window. In
addition, the front seats are very supportive and the steering wheel is low and small for a racy feel. What is new for both the sedan and this coupe is the introduc-tion of Display Audio system that is available on the EX and Touring models. This is a large iPad-like touch-screen design that lets the driver access many functions from the radio to apps that piggyback off your iPhone. (No Android apps yet but they are working on this.) This taps into the power of your phone, in the big screen, with full
integration. I liked the speed and func-tion of the design but really missed a rotary dial to adjust the volume over a touch screen volume design. Yes, there is a volume control on the steering wheel but one next to the radio would complete the package.
DriveHonda has made one small change and one big change to help with fuel economy. The small one is the exhaust system has been adjusted in both the sedan and coupe to let the engine breath better, improving horsepower slightly from 140hp to 143hp. The big change is the introduction of an in-house continuously variable transmis-sion (CVT), replacing the old 5-speed automatic. This actually makes this little car more drivable and might be the best CVT on the market. The car snaps away from a stop and cruises with ease on the highway, with quick changes
in the gear ratio that helps mimic a conventional automatic design. In addition, there is a sport mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel to help liven things up. Honda has done a first rate job here and their efforts have been rewarded with a six per cent improvement in city fuel economy and an overall drop from 6.2L/100km combined to 6.0L, something very hard to do with such a small car. The driving dynamics of the Civic has always been very good due to a fully independent suspension and willing engine. The 143hp is a nice match for this car and the CVT is a great comple-ment. The 5-speed manual is a blast to drive but it could use a 6th gear on the highway, as the high-revving engine can get noisy. The steering is crisp and the car overall instills a high level of confidence.
VerdictHonda admits that their Civic might not be the top choice in every reason to buy a compact car but they are near the top in all categories. From fuel economy to reliability, resale value, cost of ownership and sportiness this car is a good choice. The many improvements made to the car over the past three-model-years, has taken the Civic from rather ordinary to rather extraordinary. They know how to make a good, solid, reliable car and for 2014t hings just got a little bit more interesting.
The LowdownPower: 1.8L 4-cylinder with 143hp or 2.4L with 205hpFill-up: 6.7L/5.0L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $15,690-$26,655

One bad Durango in a good wayThe 2014 Dodge Durango test truck was the perfect Christmas treat. This is the perfect kind of vehicle to have when you need to cart around extra kids and family from events like skating parties to Christmas dinners to anything else that needs getting done over the festive season. With three rows of seats and seating for six or seven passengers, the Durango is a large comfortable vehicle for any large family or a family of four that needs to take extra people to soccer or hockey practice. The Durango tester was the top of line Citadel model with a beau-tiful two-tine interior, large polished wheels and classy looking grille. It was not fitted with winter tires but we had no skiing plans, plus all Durango models come with AWD as standard equipment.
LooksI can’t remember the last time a large SUV turned heads but this model had passersby, friends, and family all taking notice. Several neighbours commented on the stylish “racetrack” rear light bar that has migrated from the Dodge Dart and Charger sedans to this big SUV for 2014. Because of standard AWD and other packaging changes, the starting price is higher than direct competitors, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfind-er. Both those vehicles have a base model that starts around $30,000, the Durango, in contrast, starts at $39,995 and tops out at $51,995. This Citadel model, with options, is over $60,000. The base model comes nicely equipped with 18-inch wheels, keyless entry and
Bluetooth streaming to name a few. Dodge be-lieves the $43,995 Limited model will be the volume seller thanks to a backup camera with sensors, heated seats over the first two rows and a higher level of interior trim.
InsideUpdates to the interior for 2014 include a new steering wheel that con-trols two new screens on the dash. The first is the intuitive and very quick uConnect screen in the centre of the console. All Durango models, except this top Citadel, get a 5-inch unit; this trim gets the 8.3-inch version, which is too bad. The second screen is embedded in the instrument cluster and can be custom-ized. I tried my hand at this but never really mastered it. The biggest selling point for the Durango is the amount of space it offers over three rows for 6 or 7 passengers. My youngest son loved climbing into the third row and could actually stretch out. I even tried it out and can report that adults have plenty of room in any seat. The Citadel model came equipped with a stun-ning two-tone interior featuring black carpets and tan seats. This contrast won over my wife who wouldn’t have looked twice at a Durango but after the first week she admitted how much she enjoyed the experience. If you
take extra passengers regularly, I would opt for the less expensive bench seat that allows room for 7 people inside.
DriveThe big update for 2014 is the introduction of an 8-speed automatic trans-mission to help limit the amount of fuel this big rig uses. When matched to the base 290hp 3.6L V6 the official fuel rating is 12.4L/100km in the city and 8.3L on the highway. The optional 5.7L V8 with 360hp uses much more fuel and is rated at 15.6L/100km in the city and 9.1L on the
highway. Over two weeks, in almost 100 per cent city driving and short trips, I used a whopping 20L/100 in the city. If the Durango were allowed to stretch its legs on the open road that number would have been much better. Handling
is first rate thanks to a Mercedes-Benz derived platform (GL-Class). There is a good amount of road feel but bigger bumps are eaten up with no fuss.
VerdictThis latest Durango is yet another ex-ample of what Chrysler is doing right. It is loaded with the latest technology, has a class leading 8-speed automatic, attitude and room to spare. I enjoyed my entire time with it and so did the rest of the family, we even gave it a name, “The Badongo” I don’t know why, but it really is one Bad Durango. If I can read the tea leaves for a moment, I would bet the EcoDiesel will be com-ing to the Durango, hopefully sooner rather then better.
