APRIL 1, 2012 . PALM SUDAY OF THE PASSIO OF THE LORD
You can bet that whatever team wins the NCAA title on Monday
night will be honored with a parade. Victory on the basketball court ensuresthat the members of the team are treated as heroes by the school from whichthey hail. A marching band, a motorcade, and a street lined with cheering fanswill recognize the effort and celebrate the prowess of college athletes who bringhome the crown. Some of those who won the championship will likely considercareers in the NBA. Others will follow another path, and find their own per-sonal victory in whatever degree they obtain upon graduation. The cheers forthe athletes will be exciting and well-deserved for the few days that they last, but not one of the players will be able to build a life on the fact that they wonthis one game.
The hosannas in today's Gospel pretty much reflect the same reality in
the life of Jesus. As Messiah and Son of David, Jesus is not out to build a lifebased on the cheers of the crowd. Their adulation will soon enough turn to jeers of "Crucify him," as we hearin the Passion story proclaimed today as well. Jesus' ultimate victory comes not from a triumphant entry intoJerusalem, but from his conquest over sin and death through his own passion, death, and resurrection. By of-fering his life on the altar of the cross, Christ promises new life to all.
An NCAA victory will certainly give new life to the winning institution. Everyone on campus will beexcited and elated for a few days. But for the vast majority of students being a winning school does not ulti-mately affect their lives in the way their classes and their degree will. For Christians, the waving of palms is ajoyous act this day, but the real meaning lies in what comes next: what the death and Resurrection of the Lorddoes to our lives.

The Washing of Feet on Holy Thursday April 5th,
7:30 p.m. Mass
The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the
Last Supper as a sign of the new com-mandment that Christians should love
one another. Such as my love has beenfor you, so must your love be for each
other. This is how all will know you formy disciples: by your love for one another. (John 13,
34-35). For centuries the Church has imitated the Lord
through the ritual enactment. Were looking for both
men and women of the parish that would be interested
in participating in the ritual enactment during the
7:30 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday, April 5th. Parish-
ioners must be at least in the 8th
grade to participate. Please contact Theresa Szippl at 934-5933 if you areinterested.
