Presented by SESCO Management Consultants, these informa- tion-packed workshops are free for all attendees of the Show and will be held at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in classrooms adjacent to the exhibit floor. On Sunday, November 1st from 11:00 am 12:00 pm, Improving Employee Work Habits will be the topic of discussion. While not an issue for some people, poor work habits are a major cause of disciplin- ary action. Left unaddressed, poor work habits can lead team members to assume that the behavior is acceptable, and that can become a critical management issue. Discussing such concerns as absentee- ism, language issues, and dress and grooming habits can be a difficult but necessary part of leading a team. And just like others aspects of team leadership, correcting work habits that need improve- ment requires careful attention and skill. This program will provide the tools necessary to recognize and to address poor work habits even those of a team member who may be successful in his or her job. By focusing on the negative behavior and gaining the individuals acceptance and commitment to change, the manager effectively addresses the issue before it develops into a disciplinary problem for everyone on the team. Following this workshop from 1:00 pm 2:00 pm on Sunday the discussion will turn to the Family Medical Leave Act and Review of Final Published Rules. In November 2008, the U. S. Cutting Costs Versus GrowingAt one end of the spectrum you havebusiness people who say hunker downand cut your expenses. On the flip side, some say full speed ahead. The rightway to proceed is a combination of thesetwo ideologies.

In times like this a lot of people shift theirbusiness into reverse. They cut costs andabandon growth. You should be looking atinvesting in programs that will bring inrevenue. You cannot save your way toprosperity.

Most companies are willing to work withyou to keep you as a customer. Are youdoing the same with your customers?

And, of course, dont put all your eggs inone basket (customer). Diversify yourcustomer base as fast as you can. I hearfrom members every week about how theyhave lost a major customer. Some preparedfor this possibility. And, others did not.

Maybe you should look at your advertis-ing and start doing more. You should alsolook at increasing sales to your currentcustomers by expanding your product lineofferings. Your current customers may notbe aware of every product and service that

you do offer. And, you should also look atpersonal visits to old customers andpotential new customers to start selling tothem.

One member recently told me that theyvisited a customer who was unhappy withthe back orders, delivery schedules andquality of product from their currentsupplier. They switched to the member andgave them the names of three otherpotential customers who were having thesame problems with that supplier.

There also appears to be a lot of newopportunities as these car dealershipsstart closing up. So, be prepared to fill thisvoid by reaching out to more of theindependents that will be servicing thesevehicles.

Special Cleaning Issue and ClinicComingLast August the Global Connection wasdevoted to cleaning. It was such a hit withreaders and advertisers that we arebringing it back again next month. Idea SessionThis years International BIG R Showwill feature a return of the Idea Sessionon Monday morning. Last year's sessionresulted in a lot of take home ideas forthose who attended. Scrappage BonusAccording to a release from a EuropeanAutomotive News Agency, new carregistrations in Germany rose 40% in Mayas a result of the German governmentsscrappage incentive. The 40% increase inMay followed a 19.4% increase in April.

The German government pays motorists2500 euros ($3,500 US dollars) to scrapcars at least nine years old. The programruns until the end of 2009 and the Germangovernment will now spend 5 billion eurosor about $7 billion US dollars.

Scrappage programs in France and Britainseemed to work fairly well. The effect ofthese incentives in Spain and Italyappeared to be waning. So, it will beinteresting to see what happens here inthe USA starting in August when thedetails of these clunker discounts arereleased to our motoring public.

U.S. Postal Service Wins WhiteHouse Award for Buying GreenProductsThe U.S.P.S. has won a 2009 Closing theCircle Award from the White House for itsnational Green Purchasing Program, which encourages the purchase of retreadtires and other recycled-content products.

In fiscal year 2008, the USPS spent morethan $88 million in the acquisition ofretreads, remanufactured auto parts andother recycled goods, the service said in apress release. The USPS also received aWhite House citation for its Lead-FreeWheel Weight Program, which the USPSsaid has the potential to prevent 17 tons oflead from entering the environment.

Retreaded tires play an important part inkeeping vehicle maintenance costs downfor the U.S. Postal Service, said the TireRetread & Repair Information Bureau in apress release congratulating the USPS.And since tires are the third-highest costof running any fleet, right after the cost ofdrivers and fuel, the savings offered bythe use of retreads adds up to be verysignificant.

It is nice to see that the Postal Service alsopurchased remanufactured auto parts. How much, we were unable to find out.But it is a great beginning. Hopefully, moreFederal agencies and state and localgovernments will do the same.

Consumer Seeks ClunkerDiscountI happened to see a front-page story in theLas Vegas Review Journal recently abouta hungry woman who wanted a bargain.

It seems like this woman went in to aToyota dealer in Henderson, Nevada atlunch time to use the $4500 from theFederal Government under the new Cashfor Clunker program. She wanted to tradeher 1997 Ford Explorer with 212,000 milesfor a new Toyota Highlander and use her$4500 clunker discount

Theres just one problemthe newprogram does not go into effect untilAugust and she wanted the deal now. Shewas hungry and wanted lunch so she saidshe would be back in August to close thedeal.

Seems like this new program has receiveda great deal of attention in the news media. It will be interesting to see if this programreally sells more vehicles like proponentshope it will.

International Big R ShowIt is time to start thinking about attendingthe International BIG R Show in Las Vegason October 31-November 2nd. Heavy Duty OBDInformation Access RuleBelow is a clarification letter whichAPRA's Legal Counsel, Mike Conlon, received from EPAregarding his concernthat certain language in the heavy dutyon-board-diagnostics information accessrule appeared to state that if an aftermarketfacility worked on a heavy duty engineduring its warranty period, the warrantywould be voided. This language violatedthe CleanAirAct and would be verydetrimental to aftermarket service facilities.

DearMr. Conlon,Thank you for your December 22, 2008letter to Holly Pugliese regarding EPA'srecently published new final regulationsrequiring on-board diagnostics (OBD) forhighway heavy-duty engines (74 FR 8310).In your letter, you raise concerns regard-ing one of the provisions of the ruleregarding service information availabilityto the independent aftermarket serviceindustry. In particular, you expressconcernwith 86.010-38(j)(19)(iv) of theregulations, which reads as follows:

Manufacturers will not have any emis-sions warranty, in-use compliance, defectreporting or recall liability for service on aheavy-duty engine that is not undertakenby the manufacturer, for any damagecaused by their tools in the hands ofindependent service providers or for the

use and misuse of third party tools.

We would like to take this opportunity toclarify EPA's intention for this provision. This provision is intended to be anacknowledgment that, absent a businessrelationship between them, a manufactureris not liable for any errors in repair madeby a third party. However, you raised aconcern that this provision is too broadand implies that manufacturers areabsolved of any obligation to honorwarranty claims if any service is performedon a heavy-duty engine by an indepen-dent service provider. It is further assertedthat absolving the manufacturers of thisobligation is not permitted by the CleanAirAct. EPAdid not intend for thisprovision to absolve the manufacturersfrom their warranty or any other statutoryobligations. EPAagrees that allowingmanufacturers to deny warranty claimssolely because the service was performedby an independent service provider is notpermitted by the CleanAirAct. Therefore,we want to clarify that this provision doesnot allow manufactures to deny warrantyclaims or otherwise limit their obligationswith respect to a heavy-duty engine (1)because emission-related service andrepair of that engine was performed by anindependent service provider; (2) becauseemission-related service and repair of thatengine was performed by an independentservice provider using the manufacturer'stools; or (3) because emission-relatedservice and repair of that engine was

performed by an independent serviceprovider using third party tools. However, this guidance is not intended to requiremanufactures to reimburse independentservice providers or vehicle/engineowners for warranty service performed byindependent service providers.

Thank you again for your letter and I trustwe have addressed your concerns. A copyof this letter will be provided to the EngineManufacturers Association (EMA) as wellas the public docket for the HD OBDrulemaking. If you have any furtherquestions, please contact Holly Puglieseofmy staff at 734-214-4288.

AUTO ELECTRIC CORNER

Mohammad Samii

These days theeconomicrealities of theauto electricbusinessrequiresoccasionallysteppingbeyondrebuildingstarters andalternators andventuring into

things that are somehow related, butcannot be solved by a discount auto partstore. Sometimes merely selling a new unitwill not solve the problem!

Nowadays we see a good number of retailcustomers who have already made theirpurchases either locally or via the internet, but they are still having the same problem. This group of customers can be a viablesource for our service business if we go alittle beyond our tried and true conceptsand venture into diagnostics and repair ofthe systems that are required to make astarter crank or an alternator charge.

Once our skill level has been honedenough and we gained the knowledge byacquiring the required training beyondstandard starter and alternator repair, then

we can establish a good niche as aproblem solver and get into areas of repairservice that the price is not dictated byvarious auto part stores and cheapinternet replacements. A few highlyqualified rebuilders and auto electricshops that I know of are doing suchrepairs routinely and are very successfulin their field.

In this issue I will go over a couple ofthese cases, very briefly explain Fordssecurity system and see what it took to getthe vehicle going.

Trouble with PATSA 2001 Ford Ranger was brought in, andthe complaint was that it would not crankor start, even with the new starter that hadbeen recently installed.

A checkout of the system indicated it wasa security issue, and when the vehicle didnot crank or start, the Theft light rapidlyflashed, showing a problem with the anti-theft system.

Ford's Passive Anti Theft System (PATS)has been used since the late 1990s butfrom 2000 on, it became a common thing inmost Ford passenger cars and light trucks. There are a few versions which operate alittle differently from each other, but here I

will explain one which is called a System-Bin some detail, as laid out in Figure 1,before I go on with the rest of the story.

The key itself contains a battery-lesstransmitter which, upon insertion andturning to the On position, musttransmit a specific code in response toPATS modules inquiry. Once the PATSmodule receives this signal and determinesthe correct key is being used, it sprintsinto action and starts the rest of theprocess. The communication between thekey and the module is received andtransmitted via the PATS Transceiver thatis installed around the ignition keytumbler. It is hard wired to PATS moduleand is in charge of ID request signal fromthe module to the key, and the keysresponse to the PATS module. (Figure 2)

removes a PATS module from one car andinstalls it in another car, the vehicle willnot start, even with the correct keys!

When the PCM determines the PATSmodule signal concurs and is correct, itallows the fuel and the ignition to carry on.The PATS module will also ground theintegral starter relays coil, thus allowingcranking. Once the engine cranks andstarts, since the PCM has received thecorrect code from the PATS module, itproves out the system, turns the Theftlight off, keeps the fuel and ignition going, and the engine running. The PCMsapproval takes a second or less!

If any of the elements of the process donot work or do not match, the engine willnot crank and the theft light will flashrapidly, indicating an unauthorized key orperhaps theft! The PATS module, depend-ing on the system, can stand alone as inthis example, or be incorporated into theHybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC), VirtualInstrument Cluster (VIC), or InstrumentCluster Module (ICM), depending on thevarious types of PATS and the particularvehicle line that it is used on.

Getting back to our Ranger truck, I had todetermine the problem. The first step wasto look at the data in the PCM and PATSmodule for any related Diagnostic TroubleCodes (DTC) using an appropriate scantool. The code P1260 popped up at thePCM, which always suggests there is asecurity issue, and that you have tocontinue looking into other related PATScomponents. A code B1681 was alsodetected, which simply means the PATSmodule and the transceiver were notcommunicating! Using the owners secondkey (a must) did changes thingstheproblem still existed.

The next step was to find out what wascausing the lack of communication. To bebrief, I simply looked at the signal sent bythe module to the transceiver with mypicoscope and found out that the module

Figure 1- Fords PATS (System-B) Component Layout

When the PATS module recognizes thecorrect key signal, it starts communicatingwith the PCM via the vehicles SCPcommunication bus (explained at theToronto APRA Electrical Clinic), andexchanges another security code (withPCM) that is peculiar to only that vehicle, and is programmed into them at birth onthe assembly line! This is completelydifferent than the key code! So if a thief

was indeed requesting a response but the transceiversreturn signal was badly garbled and sometimes missingcompletely. So the problem at this point was the PATSTransceiver (Figure 2). One was ordered through thedealer. Once received and installed, the Ranger crankedand started every time and the job was finished.

This was a clear case that being familiar with nuances ofthe modern starting systems and taking stepsbeyondsimply rebuilding the starterwill pay off, is profitable, and very much in line with the work of an auto electricfacility. It can provide a niche in a segment of the servicemarket that not many shops are familiar with and will haveto send the work out.

Blowing Alternator FuseSpeaking of referrals, a local shop called and said thatthey could not find out why the 7.5 Amp alternator fuseon a 1998Honda Civic kept blowing out immediately.Obviously it would not charge with a blown alternatorfuse, but to my surprise they had not replaced thealternator, or if they had, they put the original back onbecause the replacement did not do any better.

The 13649 alternator used on these cars has a 4-pinconnector shown in Figure 3. The L terminal is not foractivation but for warning light indication. The activationis via the IG or G terminal, and that pin was fed by thefuse that was blowingand thus no charging. Discon-necting the regulators connector did not stop the fusefrom blowing, so this was not an internal alternatorproblem.

Tracing the culprit took a little time once we knew that thewire was touching the ground somewhere in the carbefore reaching the alternator. To make a long story short, after tracing and suspecting various connections, theproblem was found about 10 inches back from thealternator; the wiring loom was rubbing a support bracketright under the intake manifold. (Figure 4)

Figure 3 - Hondas 13649 Regulator Plug

made a simple test lead from scrap which only has a IGand L wire.A194 light bulb is incorporated into thishomemade test lead (Figure 5) and all that is necessary isto plug it in, connect the clips to the battery positive, andstart the motor and see if the bulb goes out and thealternator works. In the above case it did not, although Iwas not surprised due to the high mileage on the odom-eter upward of 135K miles. I should add here that I haveno plans for getting into the test lead manufacturingbusiness!

So the alternator replacement, in addition to the diagnos-tic and labor time for the grounded IG wire made up fora decent-sized invoice and turned out a happy customerwho had been to a couple of repair shops before usbefore finally getting his car going again!

Retirement?Well, I am going tomake if official: as ofMay 2009, I havereached full retirement age, and going by what SocialSecurity considers, I have been retired!

So just how much has retirement changed my dailyschedule? Honestly, not much! I still go to work everydayand do the same things I did before I retired. My joke is Ihave trimmed my working hours down to only 50 hours aweek and nomore!

Frankly I cannot think of any major changes in my routineanytime soon. The business will still be open and keep ongoing. I just may take a few more days off here and there, maybe teach more classes, seek training myself with thenewer stuff, and experiment with a long list of projectsthat has been piled up on my to do list.

It has been said that there are three possible reasons whywe continue on in this business; we love it, we have to,and/or we are insane! I think the reality is somehow acombination of the three, and I am no exception. However,as the time goes by, I realize my insane part is taking over!

Of course, I will still continue to write this column for aslong as I am able to. I have no choice in the matteras Ihave been warned repeatedly byAPRA in general and myeditor in particular with threats of harm and possiblebodily injury if I ever quit writing! Of course, I am justkidding, they have never been violent!

So, thats all for this issue and until I see you again, keepup the good work.

Mohammad Samii can be reached at 217-398-3864, orvia email to [email protected]

Once the short was eliminated, the fuse stayed put, butthe alternator would not charge! In Hondas (and similarsystems) that incorporate a C terminal function, it isimportant to verify the wiring to the C terminal is notpulled down (grounded) by the PCM or some wiringanomaly. This will disable the alternator and replacing thealternator would not make any difference in the end result.

Short of cutting the C wire from the regulator loom(which must be soldered and reconnected later), I have

Newly Assigned Numbers from Lester Catalog Company, Inc.The following list represents Lester numbers for STARTERS & MOTORS, and ALTERNATORS that were added to the system in April2009. In some cases, the Lester number is not itself a new number, but rather represents a new unit that now shares an existing number. Unitsthat share a Lester number (which we consider to be a sales number) will always have a different PIC number (which we consider to be atechnical number). Alternators beginning with 20XXX through 23XXX and starters beginning with 30XXX through 33XXX have primarilynon U.S. applications. Our intent is to publish a monthly list in the APRA GLOBAL CONNECTION, of numbers added in the previous month. For additional information on these units, refer to the Lester Kwikfinder® or contact Lester Catalog at 530-823-0963, [email protected].

REMAN WORLDDealers TransmissionExchange LaunchesNew DTE Power GearGroup DivisionThe professional industrial transmissionsremanufacturing firm, Dealers Transmis-sion Exchange (DTE), recently announcedit has expanded its current service offeringto include a new division, the DTE PowerGear Group. After more than three years ofextensive research and development, thenew division was launched to better serveDTE's wide customer base.

One of the premier transmissionremanufacturing firms in the world, DTEsets itself apart from competition throughits highly skilled staff of Reman Special-ists, expansive inventory and professionaltechnical support team. For more than 30years, DTE has specialized in theremanufacturing of the top transmissionbrands, including Caterpillar transmis-sions, Komatsu, Terex and more. The firm'swell-rounded service offering alsoincludes a specialized industrial marinetransmission division. Known for itscustom approach to remanufacturing, DTEnever uses assembly line methods in itsrebuilding process.

Not only can DTE Power Gear Groupoffer our customers complete

remanufacturing of transmissions andtorque converters, but now we are able tosupply the entire roll out assembly, including the differential, axle group, andbrake assembly. With the creation of theDTE Power Gear Group, we can meet ourcustomers' growing needs for completedrive train component remanufacturing, says Dan Horvath, Vice President ofMarketing and Sales for DTE.

The creation of the new DTE Power GearGroup division was a direct result from thefirm's interaction and feedback with itsestablished mining, steel and roadconstruction clients. DTE noticed thatsome of its clients were experiencingfavorable economic conditions, but theyhad to wait over 18 months for newequipment to be delivered. Additionally, other clients in tougher economic marketswere experiencing severe budget cuts fornew machinery. As a result, both of thesetypes of clients were turning toremanufacturing of the complete machineas a potential solution that offers bothfaster delivery and lower costs thanpurchasing new machinery.

On average, DTE has found that itscustomers save approximately 60 percentby remanufacturing the complete powertrain group (Transmission / TorqueConverter, Differential, Axle and Brakegroup) instead of purchasing all new

equipment. To ensure the highest qualitypossible, DTE conducts itsremanufacturing for all divisions in thesame facility. The firm's consistent outputof high-quality remanufactured productshas generated a large, loyal customerfollowing. Source: The Earth Times

Rising Son: Jack Stack'sSon Moves into SamePost His Father Heldby Matt Wagner Reporter, SpringfieldBusiness Journal online

There's nothing all that unusual about ason whose career track parallels hisfather's, but in Ryan Stack's case, thesimilarities are downright uncanny.

The 30-year-old was recently namedgeneral manager of SRC Heavy Duty, thesame role his father, Jack, assumed 30years ago when the remanufacturingcompany's corporately owned predeces-sor, International Harvester, was staringdown a recession of historic proportions.Jack Stack, who was sent in to shut downthe company's Springfield manufacturingoperations, remembers those days all toowell: 11 percent unemployment, 22 percentinterest rates and a Dow Jones IndustrialAverage struggling to stay above 700points.

It's really kind of ironic to see (Ryan) stepinto that position with not necessarily asdraconian statistics, but still a really, reallyscary future, the elder Stack said.

And if the economic challenges aren'tdaunting enough, there's that inevitablefather-son comparison.

They're different but, in a lot of ways, they're exactly the same, said SteveChoate, who was Ryan Stack's predeces-sor before taking the lead on a new SRCventure, CNH Reman Technical Center.

Jack Stack is widely respected in entrepre-neurial circles for spreading the gospel ofopen-book management and otherbusiness practices aimed at fostering whathe calls a culture of ownership. He co-authored The Great Game of Businessand A Stake in the Outcome - two booksviewed by many as small-businesssurvival guides.

But Ryan Stack said his new job isn'tabout living up to his father's legacy as aone-of-a-kind leader, manager andspeaker.

It would really be a painful experiencementally to try to put that pressure onmyself, he said. I've been very fortunatehe hasn't put it on me.

Accessory DriveTensionerby Al Steadman, Litens

It appears that the worldwide electricalrebuilding industry still has not learnedthat cutting corners may have seriousconsequences and end up costing theowner more in the long run. VWEuropehas just recently issued a technical servicebulletin (see below) regarding thesubstiution of solid alternator pulleys forone-way clutch pulleys. The swaping in ofthe cheaper solid pulley in a belt drivesystem that has been designed with a one-way clutch pulley or Litens IDP may causethe tensioner to break apart.

The tensioner failing is directly related tothe increased vibration levels within thebelt drive system once the solid pulley isinstalled. Bottom line is, you shouldalways check the Lester Kwikfinder(www.kwikfinder.net) or your localdealership to see if the alternator you arerebuilding requires a one-way clutch or aLitens IDP. Use only what the manufac-turer has designed for the system.

Some of the carsI drovewere theTesla EV, 2010 Prius, 2010Lexus RX450h, 2010 Insight and FordFusion Hybrid. Other cars I spent timestudying were theMini E (all electric),CamryHEV,CivicHEV, andmanyotherfuel efficient cars. I was in hybrid heaven.

Hybrid Sales are Heading Up AgainAlong with Fuel PricesYou all know that CAFÉ standards havebeen raised and every car maker can andwill hit the new targets. 39mpg by 2016 forcars and if less cars will be classified astrucks like so many are today (PTCruiser,HHR, etc). Howwill they do it? Hybridtechnology in most cases. It works, it isproven and it is smart. What will gas costthen? Depends on where you live. Manyof our readers live outside the USA asACDC has become an internationalcompany. USA, 2016 and gas is $7 agallon. That is my best guess. If you liketo read buy a book called HubbertsPeak by Ken Deffeyes, Princeton Press.Written in 2001 he lays out a map of wheresweet crude is located and how much theworld has. It is a book about oil. I read itback in 2001 a year or so after I bought my

first of many hybrids cars. It speaks towhere we are today and what the futurewill bring.

Tech Tip: A Simple 12-volt ChargingTest for HybridsMake sure you have Class 0 1000 v glovesand a CAT III rated DVOMwith leadsbefore you get into any part of the car withorange colored parts. Take any good meterand hook it up to the 12-volt battery underthe hood or trunk. Turn the key to on, ICEoff. Is it 12.6v or close to that? Charge the12v and load test or substitute a knowngood 12 v for now if it is low on SOC ordefective. Once you have 12.6 volts startthe car. It should start silently (unless youhave a BAS system). What is the voltagenow at the 12v bat? 13.0 - 14.5? Less thanthe 12.6 you have a12 volt chargingproblem? This is your charging test. If lessthan 12.6 (like 12.2) theDC-DC converter(Ahybrid alternator) is not working. Yourjob now is to find out why before replac-ing parts. That will require safety training, the above gloves and meter, a good scantool and/or a call toACDC.

PS Light on a Lexus or HighlanderSUVHEVIn an accident or even a small hit on theside of a front wheel the PS light canilluminate. After you have tested the EPSsystem according to the Toyota / Lexusprocedure it may condemn the DC-DCconverter that is used only for the 42 voltsto the PS motor; do not believe it. You willreplace the converter and it will not befixed. What happened was a voltage spikehit the PS computer and killed a circuit thatis used to control the converter. Replacingthe PS computer will fix the car.Ascan toolis required to reset the torque sensor aftera new PS ECU is replaced. This applies tothe 2006 2007HighlanderHEVand 2006-2009 RX400h. The newer versions of theseSUVuse a 12 volt PSmotor now.

GM 2 mode AC CautionAdditional refrigerant dye for leakdetection is not required on the 2008 -2009Tahoe and Yukon 2-mode Hybrid. The dyeis added to the system at the assemblyplant and will remain there unless removedduring a flushing process, at which timethe dye can be replaced only by replacingtheAC accumulator. The newAC accumu-lator contains a new dye tablet that willdissolve when the system is recharged.

Most ultra violet (UV) dyes (includingdyes fromGMSPO andKentMoore SPX)contain PAG oil that is not compatible withthe Hybrid Polyolester (POE) oil. Introduc-ing even small amounts of PAG oil(contained in most AC dyes) can causedamage to the high voltage insulation inthe hybrid AC compressor. The insulationdamage may lead to a ground isolationfault that would result in a no-crankcondition.

If the vehicle HybridAC system hasalready been injected with a commerciallyavailable ultra violet (UV) dye, the systemshould be flushed of all system oil.

Economic OptimismEmerges From GAAS2009by Gary McCoy

With predictions that the global economyis poised for a rebound in the near future, the 2009 Global Automotive AftermarketSymposium (GAAS) was held Wednesday,May 6 and Thursday, May 7 at the HyattRegency OHare (near Chicago). Thisyears event included 338 aftermarketprofessionals who gathered for educa-tional and networking opportunities.

Featured presentations on the currenteconomic climate included: Jeff Applegate, chief investment officer, Citi Global WealthManagement; William Strauss, senioreconomist and economic advisor, FederalReserve Bank of Chicago; and TonyCristello, senior vice president, BB&TCapital Markets.

Cristello expressed to the GAAS audiencea note of encouragement about theautomotive aftermarket. Wall Streetspositive on the space. Theyre makingmoney on the aftermarket, explainedCristello. Theyre investing in it. And Ithink it's a good place to be and its gonnacontinue to be a good place to be. And,you know, I just think you guys are just onthe cusp of some really positive develop-ments coming forth.

1. Flush the system immediately followingthe procedures in SI document 2047704

2. Replace the AC accumulator.

3. Drain the compressor and perform theproper oil balancing procedure. See SIdocument 2105559.

GAAS Chairman Dave Caracci said,Though no one was predicting a quickturnaround, all of our featured speakerswho addressed the economy sounded anote of optimism about the opportunitiesthat are available now and when theeconomy fully turns around.

He also expressed appreciation for thesuccess of this years event, We weregreatly encouraged by the strong turnoutfor this years event and the positivefeelings that reverberated from the podiumand in the hallways during networkingsessions.

Dont Waste This CrisisIn his presentation, Dont Waste ThisCrisis, John Waraniak, Specialty Equip-ment Market Association (SEMA) vicepresident of vehicle technology, encour-aged attendees amidst the recession andautomotive industry difficulties to createnew strategies to move their companiesforward.

Were in a crisis environment. Lets faceit. And the instinct during a crisis is towait out the uncertainty, explainedWaraniak. Well, that strategy is wrong. You cant wait. You have to learn andadapt and find the wind, and find a newway to compete. Now is the time to beenergized, to prepare, to challenge theconventional wisdom of the past with non-traditional thinking, and think of new waysto compete through these historic times.

Vehicle Technology A Key ToFuture Majority To Spend More ThisYear On Car RepairDavid Portalatin, director of industryanalysis, The NPD Group, presented theresults of research NPD conductedexclusively for GAAS on consumerattitudes toward repair and maintenance.Among other things, the research showedthat 58 percent of those surveyed wouldspend more this year to keep their cars onthe road longer.

ABSTRACTThe brake caliper internal seal is considered one of themost critical components in the caliper. Made from EPDMrubber, the square cut seal ring performs the dual functionof sealing the piston bore and retracting the caliper pistonafter brake application. As a result, EPDM brake caliperseals require firm adherence to minimum standards to besure the material compounding, manufacturing processand final installation of the seal in the brake assembly allassure optimal performance. Non-conformity in any ofthese critical areas can potentially cause a brake failureresulting in a possible injury or even fatalities. This paperwill attempt to identify the most likely cause of fluidseepage in cold temperatures as well as attempt toidentify important inspection parameters to detect and/orprevent conditions that may result in fluid seepageprimarily in cold temperatures.

INTRODUCTIONThe brake caliper is comprised of the ductile iron oraluminum casting (or housing), piston (steel, aluminum, orphenolic), seal (EPDM rubber) and Disc Pads (frictionmaterial). When brakes are applied, fluid pressure isgenerated forcing the piston (and the brake pads)outward until they clamp against the brake rotor convert-ing motion energy into heat while stopping the vehicle.

EVALUATIONBrake calipers operate in harsh environments and endureexposure to extreme temperature changes within shortperiods of time. A typical brake caliper may be exposed totemperatures as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit in wintertime, but quickly reach 180 degrees Fahrenheit withinminutes from heat generated during heavy braking. Brakefluid seepage has reportedly occurred (although in a very

small percentage) on some calipers in environments wheretemperatures have dropped below zero degrees Fahren-heit and the vehicle has been sitting undisturbed. Un-official reports have placed these incidences to thenorthern region of North America as well as Canada wherewinter temperatures can be extreme. These particularcalipers exhibited dripping or seeping fluid at the pistonseal causing the vehicle low fluid light to illuminateand/or fluid to puddle under the wheel.

In some cases, the vehicle served in a livery capacity(transporting passengers); therefore is subjected toregular state vehicle inspections. Those with brake fluidleaking are immediately removed from service untilrepaired and re-inspected. Some calipers exhibiting coldtemperature fluid seepage were collected and carefullytested at ambient temperature of approximately 65 degreesFahrenheit with low and high air pressure measuring leakdecay.

All but one of the brake calipers passed the tests (onecaliper failed due to excessive debris in the brake fluidthat became lodged between the seal and piston boreinterrupting the sealing ability.) The other calipers thatpassed showed obvious signs of prior fluid seepagearound the piston area.

To investigate further, the remaining calipers were placedin a freezer until they reached a temperature of -3 degreesFahrenheit. Each caliper was removed when ready to befluid tested on a Lorimer hydraulic brake fluid test devicethat is equipped to apply brake fluid pressure up to 1000psi and can isolate the brake caliper and hose to accu-rately measure for any leakage/loss of pressure within 0.1psi increments. The respective caliper being tested was

connected to the fluid supply hose, any air bubblesremoved and then fluid pressure gradually applied to 10psi.

The brake caliper and hose were then isolated from thetester by closing the supply valve and releasing theremaining pump pressure. The temperature was monitoredevery two minutes using an infrared thermometer with thetemperature and fluid pressure documented each time. The respective caliper exhibited fluid seepage betweenthe seal and piston bore and fluid pressure droppedapproximately .5 psi over four minutes. The brake fluidcontinued to seep until the caliper temperature reached 19degrees Fahrenheit when the fluid seepage suddenlyceased. Not only did fluid seepage stop at 19 degreesFahrenheit, but fluid pressure began to rise.

The caliper pressure was manually increased to 430 psiand isolated once again to see if pressure would hold.Temperature and pressure was then monitored andrecorded every two minutes until the caliper reached 62degrees Fahrenheit when the pressure finally stabilized.Over the observed 40 minutes, pressure increased from430 psi to 865 psi with no leaks observed. The caliperpressure was released and the caliper was carefullydisassembled.

The caliper seal groove (gland), phenolic piston and sealwere all visually inspected for any non-conformity.Various data points were marked, measured and recorded. The separated components were then placed back intothe freezer until they reached -3 degrees Fahrenheit wherethey were again measured and recorded. The Durometerreading was also measured and recorded at both ambienttemperature and -3 degrees Fahrenheit. There was nonon-conformity with the castings or pistons, but anotable deformity of the seal shape was noted. TheDurometer reading measured 72 for at both -3 degrees andambient temperatures.

Measuring the casting gland at both low and ambienttemperatures noted a seal groove diameter change of.0005" larger at -3 degrees Fahrenheit. Measuring thePiston at both temperatures noted a difference of .001"larger outside diameter at -3 degrees Fahrenheit. Measur-ing the seal wall thickness at both temperatures noted achange of -.001" at -3 degrees Fahrenheit. This informa-tion indicates that at -3 degrees Fahrenheit, the stack-uptolerance could be reduced by .00175" due to coldtemperature alone (Figure 1). Additionally, the +/-specifications for the casting groove (gland), piston andseal can affect the stack-up tolerance by a total of -.0055"(Casting Groove = +/- .001", Piston OD = +/- .002" andSeal Wall thickness = +/- .004"). Common industrystandards indicate that Radial Compression should bebetween 9 17% to achieve sufficient seal squeeze toprevent leaks (Figure 2).

Note the chart above that indicates the measured seal wallthickness due to non-conforming Compression Set andhow it affected Radial Compression below the recom-mended 9 -17% Seal Squeeze. (Figure 3) as well as thecharts that indicate where Radial Compression wasrecorded within the recommended 9 -17%% Seal Squeeze.(Figures 4 & 5).

Various seal samples were submitted to Akron RubberDevelopment Laboratory for Compression Set testing andthe results indicate the seals removed from calipers whereseeping brake fluid occurred, showed compression set atslightly over the 25% maximum. Although this resultcould be considered insignificant compared to the 20-25%maximum compression set; this slight deviation can haverelevant impact in cold temperatures.

CONCLUSIONSOur conclusions based on the above observations, measurements and results from the caliper as well asrubber testing are:

Seal radial compression must be between 9 -17% toperform the expected fluid retention function.

Compression set test results above 25% can signifi-cantly affect the seals ability to maintain its requiredshape and cold temperature will further restrict theseals flexibility therefore significantly impact radialcompression resulting in fluid seepage.

Fluid seepage will increase particularly as thetemperature warms up as Ideals Gas Law causes thebrake fluid to naturally expand with temperature rise. This reaction will generate enough pressure to pushfluid past the seal until the temperature rises above20 degrees Fahrenheit when the seal will re-soften aswell as expand and cease leaking.

These observations lead us to suspect compression setabove the allowable limits that could be caused by in-sufficient material cure or incorrect material compoundmix. Our research and testing results suggests that theproblem discussed here was mostly likely caused byincorrect methods used in curing the rubber seals.

Considering all of the variables, it is evident that RadialCompression of the seal and Compression Set areextremely critical measurements necessary to compensatefor the noted variations that can affect fluid leaks. As aresult, seal manufacturing strict adherence to processesand cure methods approved by the material compounderas well as monitoring, measuring and recording of data, are vital to consistent performance of the seal in alltemperatures. Our research into the various compoundsand suppliers lead us to conclude that requesting andinterpreting Rheology Charts and Material Lab Reports todevelop statistical data ranges may be necessary todetermine conforming versus non-conforming materials, but the most conservative approach is to immediatelyrevise our required Compression Set test specification toa maximum of 20% from the previous 25%.

Big R Show FeaturesTraining Workshopsfrom RIT

The Rochester Institute of TechnologysNational Center for Remanufacturing,Resource Recovery will be presenting fourtraining workshops during the AutomotiveParts Remanufacturers Associations(APRA) International Big R Show in LasVegas on October 31 November 2, 2009.

Automotive parts remanufacturing isbecoming more competitive every year.Progressive remanufactures are alwayslooking for new ways to save moneythrough process improvements. Surfacecleaning is a remanufacturing processwhere companies can typically findimprovement opportunities due to the everincreasing number of new chemistries andtechnologies available. Once indentified, how does a company determine whichoptions are most cost effective for their

operation? On Saturday, October 31 from1:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. RIT will presentCalculating the True Cost of Cleaning. This presentation will discuss the costsassociated with cleaning and the methodsused to calculate the true benefits to theorganization.

Another topic which impacts everyremanufacturing operation is workstationdesign. On Sunday, November 1, 2009 from2:15 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. RIT will present their

Workstation Design for Lean Initia-tives seminar. Companies can benefitfrom applying industrial engineeringtechniques for increased productivity atany station where work is performed. Thisseminar will focus on proper workstationdesign while giving examples of commonproblems and ways to overcome them.Insight on why fixture use or misuse canimpact productivity, quality and workersafety will also be discussed. Seminarparticipants will gain an understanding ofwhat should be considered and imple-mented for optimal workstation layout. Ifyou feel that your current workstationdesigns are in need of improvement, thenthis seminar is for you.

Following, at 3:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., thediscussion will turn to Improving Quality- Straight to the Bottom Line. Warrantyreturns. In-process scrap. Rework. Arethese necessary evils? In many cases, these financial burdens can be reducedthrough a root cause analysis andsubsequent corrective action. Thisseminar will focus on the processes usedto analyze and troubleshoot the causes offailure to meet requirements in any shop. Ifyou havent seriously explored qualityimprovement as a lucrative opportunity, then this seminar is for you.

Then on Monday, November 2, from 9:30a.m. 10:45 a.m., RIT will discuss Oppor-tunities for Remanufacturing. Oftenremanufacturers focus on their existingcapabilities and customers when lookingfor new opportunities to advance theirorganization. This focus can yieldexcellent results, but all too often opportu-nities can slip by unnoticed. This presen-tation will cover a variety of topics, relatedto the automotive remanufacturingindustry, which will challenge the attend-ees to refocus on emerging opportunities.Topics such as the momentum buildingaround environmental sustainability willbe discussed as it relates to material reuse, increased governmental awareness ofremanufacturing, the turmoil in theautomotive industry, and current emphasison green economy jobs.

As the Internet continues to increase inprominence and accessibility for shoppersand those researching purchases, partsand accessories, sellers should exploresites and services that make marketing andmoving products online easier.

Before heading to a store or making a call, the majority of consumers now go onlineto find out what parts or accessories theymay need and how to fix or modify theirproject. Consumers are also relying on theInternet to order the parts they need orsearch for a physical location to purchasethe desired products. Now more than ever, parts and accessoriescan be found online in addition to, orsometimes in place of, a physical location.Online marketplaces such as eBay Motorsallow buyers to participate in a communityto research, provide feedback, interactwith other buyers and sellers and ofcourse, purchase the products they need.

Recently, eBay Motors announced anexclusive agreement with Hollander, aSolera company and the leading providerof auto recycling and parts yard manage-ment solutions in the U.S. and Canada, toprovide access to more than $2.7 billion inretail value of used parts inventory oneBay Motors.

Hollanders inventory represents nearly 60percent of the available used parts marketand marks the first time their more than3,000 auto recyclers, rebuilders andcollectors have the ability to list itemsonline. The launch is expected to takeplace by year end 2009.

Millions of what are often described asused or recycled parts and accessories willnow be available for the first time on theeBay Motors automotive marketplace, creating broader access to an extensiveselection of great deals on a national scale. This includes many hard to find, usedoriginal equipment manufacturer (OEM) or

oftentimes refurbished items previouslyonly available through catalogs orrecycling yards.

Through research, marketing and commu-nication, auto parts sellers can create arobust online business that complementsan offline companys revenue source. Ifyou have considered selling parts andaccessories online but dont know exactlywhere to start, consider testing the watersfirst. If you want to know whether anotherproduct you are planning on selling canoffer the margins you need or generateenough consumer demand, look at thehistory of those parts and the sale pricescan provide a vast amount of data.

Sites such as eBay Motors can elevate acompanys search engine optimization, which means a company will appear higherin the rankings of search results when apotential buyer looks for a particular partor automotive accessory. More than 11.5million unique visitors and potentialbuyers visit eBay Motors each monthand it is consistently ranked the No. 1automotive site on the Web by Nielsen//NetRatings.

Online marketplaces also invest heavily inpaid search, often referred to as searchengine marketing. This form of onlineadvertising ensures that a large variety ofpotential customers are directed torelevant listings of automotive parts andaccessories they are seeking whenperforming a search.

To develop a successful eBay business, sellers need to understand the nuances ofthe online marketplace: supply anddemand, how listing enhancements canincrease success, timing, pricing, commu-nication and more.

Marketing products online comes down tothorough merchandising with completedetails in images, words and service. Onceonline, knowing when and how tocommunicate with buyers is essential.

Presentation, Details Essential inSelling OnlineThe key to successful merchandisingonline is to provide as many details aspossible. Research indicates that buyersare more apt to buy online when they havebeen given all the information they feelthey require. Clear photos, disclosingeven the smallest defects, and displayingthe full list of compatible vehicles for partsand accessories can help make potentialcustomers gain confidence when purchas-ing.

One principle that applies to all sales, online and offline, is to know yourcustomer. The key to boosting sales andgetting real value from selling online isoffering the right selection at the rightprices and utilizing available sales tools.

There are a few subtle differences, however, between in-store and virtualcustomers, and knowing these can helpdramatically improve your online salesreturns. Online customers are looking forcompetitive pricing. Not only is itimportant to price competitively but bewilling to negotiate. Online sellers cancreate auction-style listings or offerbuyers a choice with Buy It Now at afixed price.

Determining what to sell and when to sellit can help create a flourishing online partsand accessories business. The most activesellers know that the effort needed tomanage listings online pays for itself timeand again in increased profits.

Online buyers expect similar attention, service and responsiveness that theywould receive in a store. Dedicating staffto monitor and respond online can putcustomers at ease and increase sales.Dedicated staff can establish relationshipswith potential buyers and close the dealwithout disrupting existing in-storeoperations.

Responding to questions from potentialbuyers promptly, whether through e-mailor phone, is another way to increaseloyalty and sales. Always pay attention tothe feedback your customers are givingyou to help you provide even better

service in the future. If you are using aneBay Motors account, be sure to monitoryour official feedback. Positive feedbackis especially important, as it establishescredibility and helps comfort yourprospective customers when making alarge purchase online.

The Golden Rule of CommunicationReal estate has always been aboutlocation. With online selling, however, thegolden rule is communication. Whenbuyers sense a lack of communication, itcan be interpreted as lack of interest orlack of a solid business without adequateresources to respond to and manageonline traffic.

Always present your company in aprofessional manner. Your online presenceis an extension of your store it is criticalto maintain a professional, trustworthyatmosphere in all your online listings. Besure to incorporate the same logo, colorsand graphic style in your listings that youuse in your store signage and marketingmaterials.

Keep in mind that every inquiry on eBayMotors is a potential buyer and thereforeis a relationship that needs time and careon your part to build that question or offerinto an understanding and ultimately a andif it can be modified, in addition to asking

AFTERMARKET UPFRONTabout every detail regarding the sale and paymentprocess. Working with this customer can take time butcan pay off in the end.

As such, think of a listing as your one and only salespitch. Customers expect to see strategically-priced,professional-looking offerings in an online listing. Oneway to reduce an onslaught of inquiries is to alwaysinclude as much content and description as possible, andbe sure to offer several photos of the part or accessory.

Actively participating in the online sales process helps tobuild a customers trust. You should keep your contactinformation up-to-date on your eBay Motors accounts. Also, parts and accessories sellers should be ready toreceive questions from potential buyers and respondwhile the listing is active and after the sale when details ofthe transaction are finalized.

Sending an email to anyone who has bid on your listing isan easy process. Clicking on the Bid History link onyour listing page will take you to the Bid History page, where youll find a list of all the potential buyers whovemade a bid. You can then contact any of them by simplyclicking on their user names.

In addition to verifying buyer interest and intent, cus-tomer contact also helps generate leads, add sales andcan up-sell products such as complementary parts oraccessories by encouraging more buyers to bid moreconfidently.

When someone bids on one of your listings, its a goodidea to check the prospective buyers feedback rating andcomments. If questions arise, the seller should contactthe buyer to resolve any potential issues before the sale. Moreover, initiating contact can draw out any questionsprior to the sale, allowing the seller to answer questionsearly in the sales process.

Whether just getting started, expanding your businessonline or if you are looking for ways to increase successor selection of products online, it is a good idea toresearch similar parts and accessories, competitors andhistorical data to gain an accurate sense of the virtualmarketplace.

It may seem like a vast universe, but search engines cannarrow the playing field by displaying your listingsprominently through search engine optimization andmarketing, features that third-party marketplaces activelytrack and measure.

A clearly designed plan and execution, rooted in re-search, can produce a successful online business forautomotive parts and accessories sellers. !

parts manufacturers to survive, the future of the Internetin the aftermarket and a five-year outlook on the do-it-yourself (DIY) market.

A Look At The Environmental CrisisOther presentations included a look at the environmentalcrisis and the energy situation from Dr. John Wormald, managing partner, autoPOLIS. His presentation looked atthe consequences of the crisis for the automotiveindustry and the aftermarket.

Wormald said in his concluding remarks that he would notmake detailed recommendations, but three genericsuggestions. One, be aware, explained Wormald.Look beyond your immediate businesses, markets andcustomers to try to understand the changes that couldhappen in the wider circles of the automotive industryand beyond. And, again, the e-commerce example isextremely telling. These things could create threats foryou, but they can also open up monumental opportuni-ties.

His second point advised the aftermarket to be influential.Maintenance and repair are a huge business, socially, economically, environmentally critical, said Wormald. They matter; the aftermarket matters. It literally keepsthe majority of people on the road. Its often underratedand understated. I think its voice needs to be heard moreand more loudly by consumers and government agenciesalike and perhaps vehicle manufacturers, too.

Finally, he said since the aftermarket is made up of freeagents and businesses that set their own destinies thatthe industry is free to be ambitious. When I look back atmy experiences in the aftermarket over the last 25 years, Irealize that its the aftermarket thats been the source ofpractically all the genuine innovation in the downstreamsector of the industry. So I am confident, and actually Ithink this financial crisis is indeed a tremendous opportu-nity for the aftermarket if it's played right.

Next Generation InsightsOne of the newest and most popular features of GAAS isa presentation by the winning team from the popularUniversity of the Aftemarket Leadership 2.0 class. Fiverecent Leadership 2.0 graduates shared the findings oftheir team project, Our Next Generation How theAftermarket Comes Out on Top, which highlights theneed for an industry succession plan in light of theimpending retirement of tens of thousands of aftermarketprofessionals over the next decade.

Among the teams recommendations were programsdesigned to make the aftermarket more appealing toyoung people, including recent high school and collegegraduates, and to actively recruit and train professionalsfrom the troubled automotive original equipment industry.Scholarship Awards Reach $1.4 Million

M&T-2001 Ltd. AnnouncesInnovation in the Armature CoilTwisting ProcessIn conventional coil twisting machines, thetwisting torque moves the carriage thatholds the armature towards the twistingtoll. In case the distance to be achievedbetween the armature body and thecommutator is marginal, often the resultingspaces between the twisted coils are notequal and are unevenly formed. Sometimesthey even come into contact with eachother, which is absolutely unacceptable.

To avoid this problem the engineers atM&T-2001 Ltd. have designed a newtwisting machine where a PLC controlledaxial force moves the carriage towards thetwisting tolling. In addition, both theinside and the outside hairpins are movedindependently from each other. As a resultall parameters of the twisting process canbe controlled much better giving anexcellent outcome, shown below.

Ryan Stack prefers to work within theconfines of tangible benchmarks for SRCHeavy Duty, which remanufactures dieselengines and components for the construc-tion, trucking and agriculture industries atits 650 N. Avoiding layoffsand improving communication among theSRC family of companies are his toppriorities, and he's excited about theprospect of preparing the business forbetter times.

It's real easy to run fast when it's forsurvival ... but the real difficulty comeswhen you get past that, he said. You'resafe, and then the motivator becomesexcellence. I think the great companiesfigure out how to motivate with excel-lence.

Jack Stack said he's confident Ryan, whohe described as a humble, hard-workingguy with a high IQ, will excel as a GM.

He's always liked puzzles, Jack Stacksaid. And the more difficult the puzzle, the more he likes the challenge.

Ron Guinn, executive vice president ofSRC Holdings Corp., said Ryan Stack hasearned the respect of his peers by buildingrelationships and taking on responsibili-ties beyond those spelled out in his jobdescription. His analytical skills also madehim management's top choice for

shepherding the company safely throughthe economic tempest, Guinn added.Wework inside a company that is alwayslooking at forecasts and what could comenext, said Ryan Stack, who directlysupervises about 215 employees. In a lotof ways, we're very paranoid. ... We'vebeen preparing for a recession for 25years.

Heavy Duty has not laid off staff duringthis downturn, but SRC is offering earlyretirement and temporary leave throughoutthe company, Stack said, noting that SRChas become a source of stability for itsemployee-owners since Jack Stack and 12other managers bought the company fromInternational Harvester in 1983 for$100,000 down and $8.9 million in debt.

While history appears to be repeatingitself at SRC, Jack Stack pointed to oneimportant distinction: the circumstancesunder which he became GM.

When I stepped into the role, I didn'thave a choice, he said. I was sent thereby Harvester. My true job was to close itdown, and I couldn't do it.

A circuitous career pathSRC managers handpick their successorsand groom their understudies for advance-ment, Guinn said.

Choate said Ryan Stack was his top pickfor several reasons. The obvious onesare the drive and the enthusiasm, Choatesaid, adding that Stack's not afraid to askquestions. And he's been over there forseveral years, so he knows what the job'sentailed.

Stack began familiarizing himself withSRC's inner workings as a teenagerlooking to earn some spending moneyduring summer and winter breaks. Thepaid internships continued throughcollege, and Stack landed a full-time jobwith SRC offshoot PlentyofParts.com aftergraduating from Washington University inSt. Louis. His degrees are in finance, marketing, management and internationalbusiness.

PlentyofParts.com specialized in onlinesales of surplus and obsolete engine parts, but the company folded after a couple ofyears. Stack said lessons learned from thefailed venture laid the foundation for SRCLogistics Inc., another subsidiary formedin 1994 that's still operating today.

Stack then transferred to Heavy Duty'sfinance department, where he delved intonumbers that told stories about thecompany's performance and financialhealth. He said he also developed anappreciation for budgeting challenges andcost controls associated with newprograms.

Sales experience came next for Stack, whowas an account manager at Heavy Dutybefore taking over as director of sales and

marketing. More recently, he supervised scheduling, purchasing and warehousing as director of supply chainmanagement at Heavy Duty.

Stack said SRC employees routinely move throughout theorganization to take on new assignments, though headmitted that he might have been subconsciouslyavoiding the jump to GMa job that caused his fatherplenty of stress.

The first thought that came to my mind when my bosscame in and told me I'd be the GM was the thought ofplaying with tractors and construction equipment toys onmy dad's floor in his office, whichmade it extremely eeriefor me, Stack said.

Jack Stack said he was likewise conflicted about his first-born son's promotion.

I didn't want any of my kids in this business, said Stack,60, who appears to be rethinking a 2012 retirement. Andthen when your kids get in the business, it's very difficultfor you to walk away. ... I'm here for the fight. It's like déjàvu all over again. How do you walk out on these guysright now when their challenges are significant?
