SPRING REPERTORY SPRING REPERTORY

Our latest Great Directors series focuses on an artist known for quiet films of great emotional power. In a career that stretched from the silent era to the dizzying time of progress that visited Japan after World War II, Yasujiro Ozu crafted no fewer than ten films now considered masterpieces. He is perhaps best known for sympathetic portraits of youngsters yearning for independence and elders cast aside by impatient modernizers — often with stars Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara. Though his great subject was Japanese domestic life, Ozu’s films addressed infinitely relatable themes of loneliness, intergenerational tension, and the simple beauty of the everyday.

SUPPORTED BY OMAHA STEAKS

Tokyo Story Apr 21, 23 & 25 Dundee Micro1953 — Japan — 137 min — Japanese with subtitlesIn this profoundly stirring evocation of elemental humanity and universal heartbreak, an elderly couple travel to bustling Tokyo to visit their indifferent adult children. Widely considered Ozu’s crowning achievement.

Equinox Flower May 26 & 30 Dundee Micro1958 — Japan — 118 min — Japanese with subtitlesOzu’s first color film also marked an abrupt change in tone, now fully sympathizing with a younger generation.

Late Spring Apr 28, 29 & May 2 Dundee Micro1949 — Japan — 106 min — Japanese with subtitlesThis powerful story of a widowed father who feels compelled to marry off his only daughter is a poignant tale of love and loss.

A Story of Floating Weeds Jun 9 & 11 Dundee Micro1934 — Japan — 86 min — SilentAn aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all.

Early Summer May 5, 6 & 9 Dundee Micro1951 — Japan — 125 min — Japanese with subtitlesTradition is pitted against independence when Noriko insists on picking her own husband in this nuanced examination of generational upheaval.

Floating Weeds Jun 10 & 13 Dundee Micro1959 — Japan — 119 min — Japanese with subtitlesOzu remakes his 1934 silent classic A Story of Floating Weeds, setting his later version in a seaside location, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot.

The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice Mar 24 & 27 Ruth Sokolof 1952 — Japan — 135 min — Japanese with subtitles Secrets and deceptions strain the already tenuous relationship between a childless, middle-aged couple when their headstrong, thoroughly modern niece sweeps into their household.

Late Autumn Jun 16, 18 & 20 Dundee Micro1960 — Japan — 104 min — Japanese with subtitlesA loving mother gently tries to persuade her daughter to marry in this reworking of Late Spring.

Early Spring May 19, 21 & 23 Dundee Micro1956 — Japan — 145 min — Japanese with subtitles A familiar Ozu ennui is explored through the eyes of a young salaryman, dissatisfied with career and marriage, who begins an affair with a flirtatious co-worker.

An Autumn Afternoon Jun 23, 25 & 27 Dundee Micro1962 — Japan — 113 min — Japanese with subtitlesAn elderly widower encourages his only companion, his daughter, to marry and move away. Ozu’s final film was one more aching masterpiece.

Hayao Miyazaki, considered one of the greatest animators of all time, said, “The creation of a single world comes from a huge number of fragments and chaos.” This Course attempts to make sense of this chaos, and give students the tools to appreciate the masterful work of those who bring animation to life.

The Course introduces students to the history and development of animation as both an art form and an industry. We will explore animation from historical, technological, and cultural perspectives. Focusing closely on American and Japanese work, the class will examine early examples of the form, the transition to sound and feature film, as well as contemporary experimental animation. Students will also learn about techniques like silhouette animation, cel animation, stop-motion, rotoscoping, and CGI.

At the end of the class students will be familiar with the key people and studios who have contributed to the development of the form and expanded the definition of moving images.
