Young Professionals Conference, 3 June 2018

It is my pleasure to attend the CILT Convention 2018 in Poland on behalf of the CILTHK Young Member Committee (YMC). I presented our latest development in YMC, including our connections with the secondary school, our student ambassadors program and our representatives in each committee. International Young Professionals Committee fully recognises our representatives in each committee. They consider this is the best practice to develop the next generation of the Institute. Providing opportunities to young members to participate in different committees will achieve a number of benefits to our Institute and young members. It gives young members an opportunity which will make our Institute more appealing to new members. Young members may participate more actively in order to strive for this opportunity. They may have chance to work with and learn from the senior members in the committee. This can develop their skillsets while they can provide extra manpower to each committee. The Institute can also look for and cultivate suitable candidates to take up more important role in the future.

CILT International Young Achiever 2018Participating in the CILT International Convention 2018 was a rejuvenating experience for me.

The Convention was held in Wroclaw, Poland. The 4-day programme featured many advanced seminars, case studies, site visits and networking sessions. Many top level transport and logistic specialists from all over the world were attracted to the Convention, over 200 members from 35 CILT chapters. All the participants were quite experienced so it was indeed an inspirational and energising opportunity for me to connect with the greater transport & logistics community.

The twin themes for this year were Linking Central and Eastern Europe to the World, and The Impact of the Electric Car Revolution. I had a chance to learn from the insights of 22 international speakers on different topics that were associated to the themes. During the Convention, senior members of the Institution, including the International President, also re-emphasised the importance of delivering high quality education offering and developing young professionals in the industry.

On the 2nd day of the Convention, I was most humbled to receive the prestigious award, Winner of International Young Achiever 2018, presented by Alan Jones, Trustee and Chairperson of CILT’s Awards Committee, during the President’s Dinner. I was truly thankful to CILTHK for the unreserved support to my nomination.

Attending the Convention also gave me a chance to visit Poland for the first time. Before the trip I did some research and was impressed by the fact that Wroclaw had been named as European Capital of Culture in 2016 and considered as one of the most beautiful cities to live in. After landing in Poland and having chances to walk around, I was even more fascinated by the exciting blend of cultures, religions and politics in Wroclaw and inspired by the city’s profound academic heritage – the University of Wroclaw had produced 9 Nobel Prize winners since the beginning of the 20th century! During the casual chats with helpers of the Convention, I also got to know that Wroclaw is positioned as a major logistics hub in Central & Eastern Europe and there were many top logistics companies having operations here. For instance, Amazon has its 3rd biggest distribution centre located right in Wroclaw. Cruising around the city was indeed a perfect complement to the Convention after an entire day of learning, observing, and connecting.

All in all, the experience in CILT International Convention has been perfect for me to keep abreast of the latest trends & technologies, get new ideas, and meet other brilliant professionals in the industry. I am looking forward to the Convention next Year!

In a highly competitive operating environment, retention of talent is a key factor for success in the business community. The same speaks for the supply chain, logistics and transport industry. The survey was conducted between 12 March and 9 April 2018 and the key findings are summarised below:

CILTHK YMC Pitch CompetitionIt is an amazing competition emphasising on sales pitch and industrial innovation. Students are required to have deep data mining on latest projects in Transport and Logistics. Most importantly, they were required to deliver their sales pitch to industrial experts and have quick and appropriate responses to all those challenges from the judges. The YMC thanked for the supports from members of the judging panel: Mr Sunny Ho, Immediate Past President of CILTHK; Dr Isaac Ng, Council Member and Chairman of E&T of CILTHK; Dr Raymond Kan, Lecturer of IVE. Also, our heartfelt appreciation for the financial sponsorship on the awards from The Janel Group of Hong Kong Ltd.

HKUST – The Great Bay Area, the Champion

The results and summaries of submissions:

The Greater Bay Area arose our interest as it is regarded as a vital component of the One Belt One Road Initiative. Being positioned as a prominent global logistics hub with a high percentage of cargo transfer, in a foreseeable future, the region will contribute substantially to the economic boost and rapid growth of logistics industry that port throughput and capacity of freight will surge. Moreover, as the concomitant of technology growth, artificial intelligence and blockchain will be fully utilised with the advance of warehouse and e-commerce development. Logistic thus turns into a technology-based industry.

HSMC – IoT & Big Data in Hong Kong Transportation, the 1st Runner-upWith rapid development of technology such as 5G networks, “Smart Transportation” could become a new focus in Hong Kong by applying the idea of Internet of things (IoT) and big data. IoT is a network of physical devices, appliances and other items which embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to connect things for data exchange. The large volume of structured and unstructured data gathered and exchanged is analysed for insights that lead to better decisions and strategic business moves. The idea would transform local transportation to an automated, system-guided and real-time responding transportation – Smart Transportation in Hong Kong.

HKU – Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao-Bridge, the 3rd Runner-up

PolyU – Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, the 2nd Runner-up

The project aims to review the significance of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The impact in terms of E-commerce business and its own safety issue are discussed in the project. As the e-commerce is growing in an aggressive pace, the logistic fundamental have to be eligible to support the expanding business. HKZM Bridge plays a crucial role which provides additional transportation and logistics option for logistic operation. Despite the fact that the bridge offers various advantages, the safety issue do deserve our attention. The dolosse issue is a controversial topic recently, hence, some recommendation have to be provided so as to ease the public confusion.

Through preparing for the pitching, we find that the Guang-dong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area can bring advantages to Hong Kong through providing the opportunities and turning the threats into the opportunities. Some people think that the logistics industry of Hong Kong is facing serious challenge, so Hong Kong needs the Greater Bay Area to maintain its competitiveness. But it is not true, since Hong Kong stills plays a vital role in international marine industry. Hong Kong has its own strengths such as comprehensive legal system, free trade market and great geographical location. Hong Kong can assist the operation and the development of the greater bay area. Therefore, it is more correct to state that “The Bay needs Hong Kong”.
