Short history of EDA• 2003: EDA (European Directory Assistance) founded• 2004: EDA launches its voice-based DA (directory assistance)

service through 13-13 on Dec. 1st 2004• 2006 : 12-12 & 14-14, aimed at the Flemish-speaking

Belgians & the expat community are launched • 2007: codes acquired abroad: 11881 (IRL) and 1810 (NL)• 2008:

– EDA launches the online versions of its DA services on www.de1212.be, www.le1313.be and www.1414.be

– Funding secured with 4 VC funds and one private investor • 2009: launch of Formular1 professional (B2B) services• 2010:

Why mobile apps?• EDA has a valuable raw material: its telephone databases:

– Why “limit” utilisation to DA only?– Why not extend product portfolio, by making extra use of raw

material• Willingness to port 1212 & 1313 to the mobile space while

catering to the specific needs of mobile users: – Adapted UI– Make use of the functions inherent to mobile phones such as

geolocalisation, click-to-call, callerID intercept, etc…• Local content + local languages => apps specifically

designed for the Belgian market, unlike most apps present in app stores

• No “iPhone-only” strategy: apps will be available on iPhone, Androïd, Symbian, WM, Blackberry (?)

EDA’s Belgian telephone database • All publishable numbers of all active Belgian operators: – All fixed-line: residential or B2B – All (3) mobiles + some MVNO’s– Cablos– VoiP– Additionally, foreign databases: A, E, F, I, L, N, NL, UK, etc..

• Data is cleansed, normalised, enriched, etc… and regularly updated

• Data contains all possible firstnames, lastnames, company names, VAT numbers, streets, zip, communes & sub-communes, exonyms and of course… telephone numbers (> 4.5 million)

• Partnership with several 3rd parties, especially with a yellow-pages publisher => enriched business listings

Page 5: Apps Marathon - Reverse callerID app

App1: White/yellow/reverse pages• Possibility to search residential & business telephone

subscribers • Reverse searches: finding out to whom a number belongs• Local search : find businesses through their category• Maps & more:

– Display the map corresponding to the found result– Around-me function: search around the user’s current

geographical position• Auto-suggestion: UI lists all existing all names & cities &

categories => by simply typing a few letters (ex: “bru”), user is prompted with all matching cities (ex: “Brussels, Brussegem, Bruges, etc…”)

• Possibility to instantly call the found result, and/orsave it onto the phone contact list

App2: reverse callerID• No more unidentified calls: Woo da Fook

easily identifies the party currently calling, by having the name & address of that caller being displayed instantly as the call comes in

• Save contact: whether the call was accepted or not, save the caller’s details into the handset’s address book

• Update contact list: for the entries already in the phone’s address book and which only contain telephone number, update them with the corresponding address

• Even if the call is received from abroad, identify who the caller is

• If the number is not publically available, still display to which country and/or to which city it belongs

App3: automatic filling of user-forms• E-commerce:– Out of the top-15 reasons why people leave an e-commerce

site without buying: 4 are linked to the registration phase (source: E-Consultancy 2009)

– 49% of all e-commerce site visitors have at least once zapped & quit specifically because of the user-form (source: Opinionway 2008)

• A user-forms is already a pain-in-the-neck on a standard site, it’s a show-stopper for an m-commerce site or app

• Formular 1 is an Ajax-based module for e-commerce sites, m-commerce sites & m-commerce apps:– automatically fills-out a user-form by simply

using a telephone number– and/or semi-automatically fills-out each field

(firstname, name, city & zip, street, email) of a user-form by simply typing a few letters(auto-suggestion)
