It’s set to be a particularly exciting year at Harrogate College as we are undergoing a multi-million pound campus redevelopment. We have plans to expand curriculum areas and to build a new Technology Centre all designed to provide skills and training for our region.

The Campus Redevelopment Project will safeguard the ability of Harrogate College to deliver vocational education in the region. The redeveloped facilities will focus on a curriculum that meets the local priorities identified by local market intelligence and the Local Enterprise Partnership.

LEP funding has been secured to turn the vision into a live project, providing a dynamic, modern learning and working environment. It is intended to use modern technology to enhance the learning environment and improve the student experience.

The redeveloped campus will include industry standard facilities, such as our state of the art science laboratories, Café, Restaurant/ Bistro and Hair and Beauty salons which will be open to the public.

Apprenticeships

& Traineeships

Higher Apprenticeship(work towards NVQ Level 4 or a Foundation Degree)

Who are they for?Apprenticeships are open to all age groups over 16 years, whether you are just leaving school, have been working for some time or are seeking to start a new career. You just need to be living in England and not currently be in full-time education.

For more information and to download the Apprenticeship prospectus visit

Many of our programmes offer an Apprenticeship route which combines on and off-the-job training whilst earning a salary! Apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Most Apprentice training takes place on the job. The off-the-job training varies from day release to studying over a number of days in a block. The amount of time spent studying varies according to the framework. Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship, the Apprentice’s ability and the industry sector. Apprentices are paid from the first day of their Apprenticeship and they’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage. The current minimum wage rate for an apprentice is £3.30 per hour for those aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.

With fifteen years’ experience employed by Leeds City Council, Andy Hall is well positioned to pass on skills and knowledge to Apprentice, Olivia Hall.

Under the expert guidance of tutors Tony Parry and Peter Berry, Olivia attends Harrogate College once a week whilst employed as a maintenance Apprentice for Leeds City Council.

“Harrogate College is a quality Apprenticeship provider that we have worked with for four years. Olivia is one of seventeen QCF Apprentices who currently attend Harrogate College, all working at different levels. They offer a fantastic service as the tutors are easily approachable and are constantly working alongside of us” says Andy Hall.

“The apprentices are a breath of fresh air and an inspiration. They bring new ideas to the team and in a short space of time, really start to benefit the community.

Apprentices learn the skills at Harrogate College in a bite sized way, in second to none facilities. These

skills can then be implemented and honed in the workplace and

the effects of such are tremendous.”

Whilst well prepared to consider University

with her clutch of GCSE and A Levels, Olivia knew that a practical route was more appropriate for her.

“Olivia has a fantastic ‘get up and go’ outlook on life and is dedicated to achieving her future goal of becoming a quantity surveyor. She is determined to work her way up through the trade in order to achieve this.” Andy Hall says.

Olivia won Intermediate Apprentice of the Year after being nominated for overcoming the challenges she has faced in the workplace and volunteering.

Andy Hall explains: “It is great to have female apprentices as they benefit the community by allowing women to feel more comfortable with female operatives. This will inevitably allow expansion in businesses and produce many more opportunities for women in trades.”

Olivia has since enquired about becoming an Apprenticeship ambassador so she can continue to promote the pathways and encourage others to go down the same route.

Harrogate College enjoys a partnership with local radio station Stray FM, on which Olivia has been broadcasted talking about women in the Construction Industry, as she is already an ambassador, in her own right.

The Traineeships programme is part of the Apprenticeships family and is designed for 16-23 year olds. If you are not currently working and haven’t had the chance to gain much work experience just yet, then this programme is for you.

This individualised programme can be from 5 weeks up to 6 months and will include:

• Work placement in a vocational area of your choice

• Working towards maths and English qualifications

• Employability skills such as CV writing, job searching and other work related topics

In just six months, this individualised programme could lead you to an Apprenticeship or a job in your chosen field. It will help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress.

Whilst on this pre-apprenticeship programme individuals will have the opportunity to qualify for and receive either free driving lessons, a push bike, or a work wear clothing allowance.

Work in the health and social care sector.

Natasha is a 27 year old mum of two young children, who up until a year ago, was working in the local supermarket whilst juggling the children. One day she woke up with an urge to change the current path she was on and to better herself by going back to education.

She called Harrogate College on the off chance that could speak to someone about potentially starting a course, even though she would be be-ginning a month later than everyone else.

Within the day, she had been invited in for an interview, was offered a place and was looking forward to embarking on her new journey, by studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

“It was scary at first, as it all happened so fast, but I’m really glad it did or else I would have talked myself out of it.

The course is mainly care based, which is ideal for me and I absolutely love it. I’ve made some amazing friends and we all support each other, as it can be a challenge.”

Natasha is working towards the grades needed to go on to study Social Care at University so she can fulfil her dream of becoming a social worker who works with children or adults with disabilities. This further supported as Natasha has already been offered a job as a Personal Care Assistant at Spring Waters.

“Going to Harrogate College has changed my life. I never thought it was possible for me to be pursuing my dream, but I am and I love every minute.”

Louise ClaxtonLevel 3 Motor Vehicle case study

Harrogate College Level 3 Motor Vehicle student Louise Claxton, has secured a job as a Junior Sub Assembly Engineer at Ginetta.

Having studied at Harrogate College for two years, beginning at a Level 2 due to prior knowledge of the subject, Louise is leaving and entering straight into full time employment with racing company Ginetta.

Louise speaks about why she chose to study at Harrogate College.

“I chose Harrogate College because not many places offer a course in Motor Vehicle and that is exactly what I wanted to do, so it was a perfect choice.”

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed studying on this course as the work shop facilities are second to none. There is a great combination of practical and theory based work and the tutors and technicians are incredibly knowledgeable and will do anything to help.”

Louise is following in the footsteps of her Father and Grandfather, in the world of racing.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mechanic as I’ve grown up around cars. My Dad and Grandad have always both been into racing and it’s definitely a road I want to go down too.”

“In the future, I’d like to own my own racing business, so the knowledge and skills I’ve learned at Harrogate College have put me on the right track to achieving that goal. My confidence has grown massively and allowed me to secure this job at Ginetta, which I’m incredibly excited to begin!”

Louise also won Best Novice at the Three Sisters race track in Wigan, in her very first sprint race.

Founded in 1958 by the four Walklett brothers, Ginetta Cars Limited are a company with a passion for motor racing and one that produces predominantly race or road/race orientated cars.

“Ginetta offer young people such as myself, fantastic opportunities to begin a career within the racing industry. I can’t wait to put the skills I have learned into action.”

A Motor Vehicle technician at Harrogate College mentioned to Louise that Ginetta was hiring staff, so the 18 year old took it upon herself to submit an application. Shortly after that, she was asked to attend an interview, followed by a second interview where Louise had to use her practical skills to ‘track up a car’ which involves making sure the wheels are properly aligned. Louise pulled out all the stops and impressed the team, and a couple of days later she had been offered a permanent and full time job as Junior Sub Assembly Engineer at Ginetta.

Harrogate College stun audience with Performances of musical ‘Chicago’

Harrogate College’s Performing Arts students stunned audiences over four shows in the College theatre.

Each show was met with a full house, all singing and tapping along to the well-known and classic songs from the musical ‘Chicago’ originally written by John Kander.

After enjoying a welcome drink and buffet created by the Harrogate College catering students, the audience were plunged into darkness, with the familiar tune playing and narrator welcoming the late night stop-outs to the performance of ‘Chicago’.

The American accent was mastered by the performing arts students and they all immersed themselves into their characters remarkably well. Roxie was played brilliantly by both Vicky Gaunt and Rebecca Morten, with the audience letting out a unified gasp when the character shot Fred Casely dead.

The big show tunes were belted out, sending shivers of excitement down the spines of the audience, with exceptional performances from Velma Kelly, played by Amelia Gill, coupled with very neat and enticing choreography performed by all of the students.

“There were lifts, spins and an abundance of energy on stage and it was truly captivating to watch.”- Says Grace Todd- Harrogate College.

Other passionate solo performances came from Sean Geldart who played a lonely and left out Amos, and Nathan Taylor who played ladies’ man Billy Flint.

Kim Hutchinson played vivacious Mamma Morten, often on stage with reporters Chloe Hutchinson and Rebecca McCluskey, and detective James Riley.

“The students all committed to the project wholeheartedly and worked hard, so I am proud of their effort and the fact that they also improved their work with every show, getting better and better.”

Robin BurchPerforming Arts lecturer.

“It was absolutely fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed it and my heart nearly stopped when Roxie shot the gun!”
