Standards Based ApprenticeshipDefinition:
The Apprenticeship Programme is an:
• Employer demand driven, education and
training programme for employed apprentices
• Aimed at developing skills, knowledge and
competence to meet industry and labour
market needs
Existing Apprenticeship Features• Only route to become a Qualified Craftsperson
• Employer Recruits and Registers Applicants
• On and Off–the-Job Training
• Minimum 4 Years Duration
• Can Commence Any Time of Year

Structure of Training• 7 Phases of Training
• 4 Phases On-the-Job with Employer

• Employer pays apprentice On-the-Job
• ETBs pay training allowances Off-the-Job
• Minimum 4 Years Training
Entry Requirements• 16 years of age – no upper age limit
• Minimum Grade D in 5 subjects in Junior
Certificate or approved equivalent or
Approved Pre Apprenticeship Course
3 years relevant work experience in
designated industrial activity
• Colour Vision Test (ISHIARA) required for
certain trades
How to Become an Apprentice
• Select your Craft / Occupation
• Obtain a Job with an Employer
• Employer must be Approved by SOLAS
• Employer Registers the Applicant
• SOLAS Registration Date is the official Start Date
of Apprenticeship

• 1 day per week Study Release within the Company
• Blended/distance learning/Online lectures/Case Work
• Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Insurance Practice L8
INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIP
• Progression Route for Qualified Electricians
• 24 Month Apprenticeship Contract with Employer
• 70% of time On the Job
• 2 Blocks of 15 weeks each Off the Job Limerick IT
at Stages 2 and 4 over the 2 years
