Welcome to the Gen2 Apprenticeship Information Guide for 2018. By now you will probably be thinking about your future and what to do after you leave school or college. This can be a daunting experience, so we are here to offer you the best possible start and make the first step towards a highly rewarding career!
Whether you are choosing our engineering, science or business apprenticeships you will be taught by industry leading specialists, all whilst becoming qualified and receiving a wage.
You will be getting your first step onto a career ladder and gaining skills that are essential for industry and business which are recognised by employers nationally.
An Introduction to Gen2We currently train over 1,350 apprentices and our programmes continue to be sought after as employers and young people realise the benefits of an apprenticeship.
After your apprenticeship, you potentially will have the opportunity to progress from an apprenticeship to a Higher Apprenticeship. From there, you can continue with further learning, to gain employer-funded qualifications all the way to degrees and beyond.
We have been delivering exceptional apprenticeship training for over 18 years and continue to be the leading trainer of engineering, manufacturing and business apprenticeships in Cumbria. We have also been awarded a Grade1 ‘Outstanding’ in our most recent Ofsted inspection.
Your employment prospects with a Gen2 apprenticeship couldn’t be better. An impressive 92.5% of apprentices that have been trained by us, progress immediately into full-time employment.

How to Apply
All applications for apprenticeships with Gen2 should be made via our online recruitment portal, which can be accessed from our websitewww.gen2.ac.uk.
Be sure to sign up using an email address that you have easy access to. You will need to check your e-mail regularly for updates on the progress of your application! If you have applied before, please use the same email address to log back in to your application, and update it for this year. Please be sure to check your spam/junk folder and mark any emails from [email protected] as ‘safe’ going forward.
Please note: If you have learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or any disability where you are given extra time for exams, please disclose this during your application so that we can make adjustments for your needs. It will be necessary for you to provide proof of your requirement for additional time by bringing evidence to your aptitude test session. Gen2 encourages applicants to disclose any disability in order for learning to be tailored and also assist with any special requirements.
Recruitment Schedule
November 2017Open days will be running from November across the centres. Check website for details.
January 2018Apply via the Gen2 website from 3rd January 2018. You will then be redirected to our recruitment portal. Open days at all our centres are available. Check website for details - www.gen2.ac.uk.You will be invited via email to book your aptitude testing slot. Aptitude testing will start.
March - April 2018Applications for Sellafield will close mid March. Applications for remaining schemes across the County will close at the end of March. Aptitude testing will continue and pre-assessment days will commence.
May - June 2018Your CV will be sent to local employers looking to recruit apprentices. Employers will contact you directly to arrange interviews or Gen2 may contact you on their behalf.
July - August 2018Gen2 will start to send out offer letters to all successful applicants. Those who do not receive an offer will be placed on the reserve list or could then apply for our study programmes. Gen2 will keep you informed about your application along the way, but please let us know if you have any change in circumstances.
September 2018Learner induction and commence Apprenticeship. Don’t worry if you’ve missed out this time, we have a range of roll-on roll-off schemes, such as business courses, that we recruit for during the rest of the year too!

The role of a Welding, Fabrication & Plating Apprentice: Fabrication is a discipline which covers a wide range of occupational areas including Welders, Platers, Sheet Metal Workers and Pipe Fitters.
Fabricators are essential in all fields of engineering and manufacturing, and need to be able to work in all environments.
Fabricators and Welders need to be able to interpret engineering drawings, mark out components, form components using a range of powerful equipment such as guillotines, presses, formers and folders to drawing specifications. The welder then prepares the materials and welds the components to specification.
In many firms a Fabricator will be expected to carry out both fabrication as well as welding work, but in some cases you will specialise in one of the two areas.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres with one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job at your place of work.Year 2 Onwards - Employer workplacement, with day release for TechnicalCertificate Study and Gen2 progressassessments every 6 weeks.
Pre-requisites: GCSE Grades A-C (or new equivalent) in Mathematics, English Language and Science although employer requirements may vary.

The role of an Electrical Apprentice:Electricians are highly skilled crafts people, who work with electrical equipment and supplies on a wide range of engineering machinery and equipment. They also control and maintain instrumentation equipment that is used to accurately measure and regulate process variables such as the flow rate of liquids or gasses, temperature or pressure. Their work ranges from installation of domestic electrical circuits for houses, to the installation and maintenance of sophisticated, highly complex machinery and equipment in major processing plants and factories. Electricians install, maintain and test electrical and instrumentation equipment, systems and appliances, and have to be able to diagnose and fault find problems with electrical equipment. For these reasons they need to be highly skilled with a logical and methodical approach to their work.

Electricians need to have perfect colour vision and therefore must undertake a colour vision test.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Year 2 - Employer work placement. The role of a Mechanical Apprentice:Hand fitting, machining, maintenance of pumps, gearboxes and compressors are just a few of the things that you will work with as a mechanical apprentice. The apprenticeship involves the installation and maintenance of a wide range of engineering plant equipment, it may also involve the manufacture of new components using machinery. Mechanical Craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors with complex plant and equipment. They are involved in the manufacture of component parts for machines, the assembly and installation of machinery, as well as the maintenance of equipment. They must work with precision and accuracy, and have a logical approach to work. They also need to be able to read and interpret drawings /diagrams, diagnose and fault-find problems with equipment, and work co-operatively with other colleagues.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1 - You will learn for four days a week in one of our Skills Centres plus one day per week for your Technical Certificate, or your training may be on the job, at your place of work. Year 2 - Employer work placement. The role of a Control Systems Apprentice:All production and manufacturing plants require control systems, without them the plants simply wouldn’t function properly. Control System Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the plant operates satisfactorily and with peak efficiency. Control systems are particularly essential to industries such as Nuclear, Chemical, Petrochemical and Manufacturing. Control systems engineering has become a modern and complex discipline that requires the worker to have a wide experience of subjects such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), software engineering, plant instrumentation, electronics, communication networks and process control.The role of a Control Systems Technician is varied but may involve design, development, maintenance and servicing of plant control systems, within the nuclear and process plant industry. Students completing this apprenticeship may possibly progress onto a Foundation Degree qualification.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1- Apprentices are based with their employer from day one and would typically attend one of our Skills Centres one day per week for their Technical Certificate. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.
Year 2 - Apprentices continue to attend Gen2 one day per week for their Technical Certificate. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Pre-requisites: The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by each employer, but may typically be three GCSEs at Grade C or higher or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing.

The role of a Process Apprentice:As a Process Operator you will typically work in a manufacturing company that makes use of large and often complex pieces of machinery and equipment.
It will be your duty to keep it operating safely and efficiently, you will also need to take sam-ples of materials used for analysis.
Since many manufacturing plants run day and night, you may be required to work shifts.
You will also be required to maintain a safe work area to ensure the effective running of plant and equipment.
Where will my training be delivered?You will work with your employer from day one, undertaking your training in the workplace.
You will be granted day release in order to study for a Technical Certificate at one of our Skills Centres for at least one day per week.
You will be visited by Gen2 around every six weeks to assess your competence.

What will I study as a Pipefitting Apprentice with Gen2?• General health and safety in engineering
construction • Specific pipefitting safety and safe working
conditions• Technical drawings• Use of basic hand and power tools• Cutting and preparing pipe work systems• Cold bending ferrous and non ferrous pipe• Fabricating pipework and supports, • Assembling and installing pipework systems• Preparing and testing pipework systems
The role of a Pipefitting Apprentice:A pipefitter is similar to a plumber in that both work with, install and manipulate pipes. The pipes a pipefitter works with must carry liquids or gases at high pressure for industrial purpos-es, while a plumber deals with pipes that carry water at low pressure.
Pipefitters fabricate pipework and supports using detailed engineering drawings, cutting, shaping and bending pipe in preparation for welding. Pipefitters also fit sections of metal pipe together by cutting them precisely and may use techniques such as threading and bending.
Often working alongside welders they connect piping efficiently and safely, sometimes in difficult conditions.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1 - Apprentices are based in the West Cumbria Gen2 training centre completing their practical foundation training. Students will also study their technical certificate one day per week with Gen2.
Years 2 to 4 - Apprentices are placed with their employer and are visited every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

The role of a Machinist Apprentice:
Machinists in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work. Work will involve machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multiaxis CNC machine tools centres.
You will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust conventional machine tools. When using CNC equipment you will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations you will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.
Where will my training be delivered?Year 1 - Apprentices are based one of the Gen2 training centres completing their off-the-job training. Students will also study their technical certificate one day per week with Gen2.
Years 2 to 4 - Apprentices are placed with their employer and are visited every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.
MachinistAdvanced Apprenticeship
Pre-requisites:Pre-requisites would typically be GCSE Grades A-C in maths, English or new grading equivalent. New apprentices also have to successfully pass the Gen2 aptitude testing.
Full Apprenticeship Title:Apprenticeship Standard: Machinist (Engineering Technician) - Level 3

The role of a Health Physics Monitor Apprentice:The principle function of a Health Physics Monitor is to provide a radiological safety and monitoring service to customers in order to meet business needs to defined standards.
The role is to monitor radiation dose rates, personnel, surface and airborne contamination, recording the levels detected and responding accordingly. Health Physics Monitors may also be part of the emergency response arrangements.
Duties and aspects of the role will also include: • Undertake clearance monitoring • Function test radiation protection

What will I study as a Nuclear WeldingInspection Technician with Gen2?As a Nuclear Welding Inspection Technician Apprentice, you will receive training in:
Material Science – Gain a knowledge of metal types, properties, and composition to support the selection process for nuclear applications.
Welding Technology – Understand the welding processes including accepted terminology, standards and abbreviations.
Welding Inspection – Learn about all of the quality control requirements during welding and gain the ability to undertake all three stages of weld inspection, This will also include the requirements for inspection reporting and verification of certification data in accordance with relevant standards
NDT Techniques – Acquire knowledge of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and understand why and when these techniques are deployed as well as the advantages and limitations of their use.

The role of a Nuclear Operator Apprentice:
The work carried out by a Nuclear Operator can vary greatly and this programme will prepare learners to engage in both nuclear decommissioning activities and process operations.
Nuclear decommissioning involves the safe shutting down and dismantling of nuclear power plants that have reached the end of their energy producing life, ensuring that there is no danger from radioactive materials and no chance of accident to people visiting the site.
Process operations entails the operation of large and often complex machinery and equipment, making sure they run safely and efficiently. These skills are transferable to other fields such as environmental restoration or general engineering activities that are carried out within many businesses in the chemical, polymer and petrochemical industries.
Year one will be spent giving you a wide range of engineering and nuclear related skills in preparation for assessment on your NVQ Level 2 in the workplace including basic hand skills, maintenance skills, process measurement and control.

Nuclear OperatorIntermediate Apprenticeship
Where will my training be delivered?
This apprenticeship is only available in West Cumbria. The first year will be spent training in our Energus facility at Lillyhall and you will be employed by Gen2.
The second year will be in the workplace, on site, and you will be employed by a company operating at a nuclear facility. During your second year you will be visited by Gen2 around every six weeks to assess your competence.
The Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship scheme is divided into two types of career paths dependent upon employer requirements:
1. Nuclear Plant Operators
These people are trained to operate and maintain chemical and process plants that make a variety of products. Operators will monitor levels of flow, chemicals, temperature, waste products and radiation.
They may take samples of products at different stages of the processes in their building and send them to another part of site for analysis for the business, customers, UK and international agencies.
Some Plant Operators will be trained in plant control rooms which are automated processes to allow chemicals and products to be moved around the building or site in a controlled manner. Other plants will manufacture products e.g. nuclear fuel pellets or put waste products into containers for UK and overseas customers.
2. Decommissioning Operators
The role of the Nuclear Decommissioning Operative is to control and operate basic decommissioning plant and equipment efficiently and safely.
They will report and investigate deviations from routine operating conditions and be able to deal with basic process problems. They are given the opportunity to progress to Nuclear Decommissioning Team Leader.
What qualifications will I obtain?BTEC or City & Guilds Level 2. Apprentices are also provided with an opportunity to improve Maths and English skills. The modules in your qualification will be agreed locally by each plant where the apprentice is assigned to.
This apprenticeship is awarded on successful completion of an end point assessment.
These qualifications are subject to Government changes.

IT is now an integral part of any business and this qualification allows you to develop IT systems and processes to support businesses and staff across a variety of activities.

Apprentices undertaking this qualification are suitable not only as general administrators but also suitable for specialist roles such as Court Clerks and HR Administrators.
