APPOSITIVES

• A word or phrase that identifies or explains the noun or pronoun it follows

• Clarifies or adds details to your sentence

• Ex. Rachel, the girl with the long brown hair, is my best friend.

• Ex. Football, the greatest sport ever invented, is played during the fall months.

PUNCTUATION OF APPOSITIVES

• If the appositive occurs in the middle of the sentence, a comma is needed at the beginning and end of the appositive– Ex. Eric, a talented musician, plans to study in

Europe.

• If the appositive occurs at the end of the sentence, a comma is needed at the beginning of the appositive– Dr. Jackson has a degree in entomology, the

scientific study of insects.
