Power and productivity for a better world Due to its controllability , ease of use and high power ratings, the IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) has become the component of choice for many power electronic applications. It is today possible to build inverters rated to over 1 MW with IGBT modules without paralleling or serial connecting devices, in a common, 2-level voltage source inverter as shown in Fig. 1.  T o use the IGBT successfully , it is important to understand how both its electrical and thermal parameters are de- ned.
