IntroductionThis booklet tells you about the secondary schools inthe district and how you can find out more about them. Itexplains how we deal with your request for your child tostart secondary school and gives advice about how youcan get financial help with paying for travel.

We have written this booklet for you if you have achild who is due to start Year 7 at secondary school inSeptember 2020. These are children born between1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009. We hope you findthis booklet useful in helping you decide on a school foryour child.

We have split the booklet into five sections.l The first contains general information.l The second contains advice on where to view policies

on admissions (decisions schools make on whichchildren they take).

l The third contains details about every secondaryschool in the Bradford district.

l The fourth contains information on where to viewschool priority areas.

l The fifth contains information on Atypical Age of Entry.

A growing number of secondary schools are becomingacademies and it is the school governing body that makesdecisions on who to offer places to. You can find details ofthese in section 3.

If you would like general information about schools, youshould go to their open evenings or look at their websites. If you need information about applying for schools, pleasecontact the Admissions Team at the address below.

Many schools are popular and oversubscribed so itis important that you are fully aware of the admissionprocess and ensure your application is completed properlyand on time. We will do our best to offer you a place at oneof the schools you list on your application form. Last yeararound 93% of children starting secondary school wereoffered a place at one of their preferred schools.

Changes for 2020Please be aware that some schools have changed or maybe changing their status. Please see ‘Types of schools’ atthe foot of this page for information.

New Schools Opened September 2019Bronte Girls Academy and Eden Boys’ Leadership Academyare new Free Schools that opened in September 2019. Forfurther information regarding the schools and their admissionpolicy please visit www.bradford.gov.uk to view the ‘guide forparents’ and to see the schools admissions policiesApplications for places at the school must be made in thesame way as all other schools, on the Bradford Councilwebsite. No additional forms are required to be filled in by theschool or the council to gain admission. Please ensure youread the admission policy so you are aware of the prioritiesand the criteria used to offer places.

Co-ordinated admission arrangementsUnder the Education Act 2002, local authorities (LAs)must draw up a scheme which co-ordinates admissionarrangements for all secondary schools (but not specialschools) in their area. Our co-ordinated admission arrangements make sure thatevery parent of a pupil living in the Bradford local authorityarea who has applied for a secondary school place during thenormal admission round receives an offer of one school placeon the same day. Each authority exchanges information aboutany preferences for a school outside the LA in which the pupillives with the ‘home’ authority. You can apply for up to five secondary schools on-lineor on a form (known as the ‘common application form’) ifthe child is offset. We have fully co-ordinated admissionarrangements with Calderdale, Kirklees, North Yorkshire and

There are four types of secondary school in Bradford. It is important to know which type of school you wouldlike your child to go to because different people areresponsible for making decisions on which children toadmit. Either we, as the local authority, or the schoolgovernors decide who gets a place. Voluntary-aided,foundation, trust schools, free schools and academieshave their own oversubscription rules. These are therules used when there are too many children for thenumber of places available at the school. The following list tells you who is making the decision forthe particular type of school. Applications for all schoolsmust be made on the online common application form. Some schools require parents to completesupplementary forms. These are used if you areapplying for faith reasons or to register for the fairbanding assessment.

Please refer to Section 3 (page 17) which lists the typeof each school.

Academies/Free SchoolThese are state schools, independent of the localauthority, and funded directly from the Department forEducation.

Community schoolsThese are schools which the Local Authority providesthe funding for and who are responsible for decidingwho gets a place.

Voluntary-aided schoolsThe Local Authority provides funding for these schoolsbut the governors are responsible for deciding who isgiven a place at the school.

Foundation and Trust schoolsThe Local Authority provides the funding for theseschools but the governors decide who is given a place.

Types of schools

Leeds authorities. We also co-ordinate with otherlocal authorities in England. This means that afterinformation has been exchanged, if more than oneLA can offer a place at a preferred school, the ‘home’authority will offer a place at the school which you haveranked highest. All offers of a secondary school place will be sent byemail or letter to parents on 2 March 2020.

How do I decide which schools toapply for?Information from schoolsEvery secondary school has their own website whichgives a lot of information on the day-to-day runningof the school. See section 3 for school websiteaddresses. Each school also produces a booklet forparents with similar information.Bradford Council websiteLook at ‘School Finder’ to locate the schools inyour area. You can also view school priority areaadmission maps.Visiting schoolsBefore you decide on a particular school, you shouldvisit the schools in your area.Other information to considerIf you would like information on how particularschools are performing, you can get a summary ofthe latest Ofsted report on their websitewww.ofsted.gov.ukYou can find information on the school’s examresults on www.gov.uk or on the school’s website.Section 3 gives you information on the schools inthe Bradford district and details of their applicationsfor last year.

Read this booklet: before you apply for any schools,it is important to get a realistic idea of whether your childis likely to be offered a place. This guide provides a lot ofinformation to help you, such as:

l a link to the admission criteria for each school (theseare the rules under which applicants are considered)and who makes the decisions;

l how many applications there were last year and howthe places were allocated;

l the total number of places at the school; and

l a link to maps showing school priority admissionareas.

Be realistic: although we will do all we can to giveyou the school you want, we cannot guarantee a place.Demand for schools varies each year, and the fact thatyour neighbour was offered a place last year does notmean you can rely on being given a place this year. Manyschools are oversubscribed, in other words they receivemore applications than they have places to offer. Westrongly advise you to apply for five schools and includethe one you live closest to or the school in whose priority

admission area you live as one of your preferences.

Make your preferences count: You should apply forfive secondary schools. If you only apply for one school, you will only be considered for that school and will bewasting the opportunity to be considered for any others. You will only be able to put your child’s name on thewaiting list or appeal for schools that you have appliedfor. Last year, 93% of children were offered one of theirpreferred schools.

The school I would like is in another localauthority – what should I do?If you live in the Bradford district and want your child to goto a school outside the area, you must still apply on-line onthe Bradford common application form. If you live outsidethe Bradford district, you can apply for any of our schools. However, you must apply to your ‘home’ authority. Thereis a list of our neighbouring authorities at the back of thisbooklet. You can also phone admission officers on01274 439200 for more help.

Do not apply for private schools via this system. Applydirect. If you secure a place at a private school pleaseadvise us in writing.

How does this information help me?

You will find a full timetable of important dates on theinside front cover.

Applying online is the best way to apply. If you applyonline you will receive the offer of a school place on 2ndMarch, by email and will not have to wait for the postalservices (unless you opt out of receiving any emails).

If your child is currently in year 6, but was not bornbetween 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009, pleasecontact the Admissions Team for a paper application form. You will be unable to apply through the online system.

If you are unable to apply online, please contact yourprimary school who can assist parents with the onlinesystem. Parents can also contact the Admissions Teamfor assistance and make an appointment to meet with anofficer who will discuss the issues and decide if a paperform is required. The closing date for all applications is31 October. You should not rely on the post to ensureyour form is received, you may wish to send it recordeddelivery. You should request a receipt if you hand yourform in personally.

We strongly advise you to use all five preferences andpreference all the schools whose Priority Area you maybe in to maximise your chances of being offered a locallyaccessible school.

You can apply for any school in the Bradford districtor outside the district except fee paying schools. Youshould find out about the admission arrangements for

each school by visiting the schools website or readingtheir admission policy.

Supplementary information forms (SIF)If you are applying for a Catholic school, BradfordAcademy, Bradford Forster Academy, FevershamAcademy or Immanuel College on faith grounds, youmust also fill in the school’s supplementary informationform (SIF). You must fill in a SIF for each faith school thatyou are applying for and return them to the school by 31October. If you do not do so, your child will be consideredfor a place within another category of the admission policy.Contact the schools for more advice. Supplementaryinformation forms (SIFs) are available from the schools orcan be downloaded from the council’s website.

Please remember that you must still apply onlinefor a school place.

Fair banding assessmentsIf you are applying for any of the Dixons Academies (apartfrom Dixons Allerton Academy, Dixons Cottingley Academyand Dixons Trinity Academy) or Bradford Girls’ Grammar, you will need to complete the schools’ own supplementaryinformation forms in order to register for the ‘fair bandingassessments’. This is because their admission policiesstate that their pupils must come from a wide ability range. To achieve this, all applicants need to take an assessment

We also send applications toother local authorities and they tell us which children theycan offer places to. For community schools, we look atthe applications and use the Council’s admission policy todecide which applicants will be offered a place. We alsocheck any supporting letters you have provided thatcould affect the decision. Please ensure you also fill inand return any required supplementary informationforms (SIF).

Any parents who apply online will receive an email on2 March informing them of the result of their application(unless you opt out of receiving emails). Parents who optout of receiving an email or who apply on a paper form willreceive a letter through the post. Letters will include anacceptance slip (for Bradford Schools only) which parentsneed to return to the relevant school by 16 March 2020.

Am I more likely to get a place at my firstpreference school?

Each school you apply for will be treated as a separateapplication and we or the governors decide if yourchild qualifies for a place at each school using theoversubscription rules (see section 2). This means that, for example, if how close children live to the school is animportant factor, the children living closest are most likelyto be offered places, regardless of the order the schoolwas listed on the application form. The order in which younamed the schools only matters if more than one of theschools can offer your child a place. If that happens, we willoffer you the school which is the higher preference.

It is important that you list five different schools – asking forjust one school or naming the same school several timeson the application form will not increase the chances ofyour child being offered a place there. You cannot appealor be placed on a waiting list for a school that you havenot applied for, unless there is a significant change in yourcircumstances (for example, you move house).

What happens if I miss the deadline orwant to change my preferences?

Before we start to consider applications

If we receive your application after the closing date it willonly be considered as ‘on time’ if we receive it beforedecisions about offers of a place start to be made andif there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptionalcircumstances may include a family moving into the area, returning from abroad or moving house.

After we start to consider applications

Applications will only be considered where exceptionalcircumstances exist. In the Bradford authority, parentscan apply for five schools. We will not accept any furtherapplications after 18 November 2019 unless:

l there are exceptional circumstances (as describedabove); or

l the late application is for an undersubscribed school (inother words, a school with unfilled places).

After national offer date

We will accept late applications from 2 March 2020. Youmay be able to add additional preferences, if you did notoriginally use 5 preferences and/or you wish to apply forundersubscribed schools.

Parents can make an in-year application for any schoolsthey wish to preference after 1 September 2020 (see ‘In-year admissions and transfers’ on p12 for further details).

Other local authority schools

We will send late applications to other admissionauthorities, but they may not consider them. You may needto check with the relevant authority to see how they treatlate applications and changes of preferences.

Does moving house affect myapplication?

We hold details on all of the children attending a BradfordLocal Authority school. If the address you give on yourapplication is different from that which we have on ourrecords, or if you move house during the applicationprocess, you will need to provide proof of your housemove. Please provide a copy of your council tax bill and aminimum of two additional documents from the following- gas, electricity, phone bill and child allowance or benefitdocument in your name or that of your child.

When considering applications, the address that is used isthe ‘child’s permanent address at the time of admission’.

If you expect to move by September but you are still livingat your current address when you apply, we can onlyconsider your application from the new address if youprovide the following documents:

l Proof of completion on your new property and asolicitor’s letter to confirm the sale of your previousproperty; or

l A rental agreement on the new property andconfirmation of the sale or ending of your tenancyagreement for the previous property.

We will not accept mortgage offers or letters from estateagents as proof. If your house purchase or rental has notreached a stage where you can provide these documentsby 13 December, we will consider your application fromyour current address. However, it is important that you tellus if you move house at any time, as it could affect yourchild’s allocation. Investigations will be made if we havereason to doubt where your child lives and this could resultin a place being withdrawn.

If you have applied for a school located in another localauthority or have applied for a school which is its ownadmission authority, we cannot guarantee that they willaccept changes of address which take place after the31 October 2019.

How do you decide who is offered aschool place?

Please read the admissions policies by following thelink contained in this booklet.

Please also refer to the individual school websitesand ensure you understand which criteria, of theadmission policy, you meet and if the school requiresyou to submit a supplementary information form (SIF)and/or sit a fair banding assessment test.

If you do not fill in all the required forms and sit anyrequired tests you are unlikely to be offered a place atthe school, even if siblings are attending.

Parents should also check the individual school policyto see if priority is given under social and medicalgrounds and what proof is required, if they wish toapply under this criteria.

Would you ever withdraw the offer of aschool place?

Yes, but we would only withdraw the offer in limitedcircumstances as outlined in the School AdmissionsCode 2014. These are:

l if you have not accepted the place you have beenoffered within a reasonable time;

l if you have deliberately made a fraudulent or

misleading application (for example, you have falselyclaimed that your child’s permanent address is nearerto the school, which means that another child has notbeen offered a place that they would have qualified for,had you not applied with the incorrect information; or

l If your child has been offered a place by mistake andthe offer should not have been made as your childdoes not qualify for a place

If we are unable to give you any of your preferred schools,we will offer your child another school with an availableplace. This may include faith and single sex schools.

We decide which is the most appropriate school, takinginto consideration all children without a school place andavailable bus routes, where possible. If you do not applyfor a local school and it becomes full, you may find thatthe school allocated is some distance from your homeand more than one bus journey.

Misleading or fraudulent information

If you apply for a school place under sibling criteria and theadmission policy requires the sibling to be in attendanceat the school when the younger child starts in September, then the place may be withdrawn if it is considered thatyou have given misleading information in your application.

Similarly, if you move house and no longer qualify for aschool place as the address you applied from is not youraddress in September and the policy specifically saysthe address you must use is the address at which youlive in the September, the place may be withdrawn if it isconsidered that you have given misleading information inyour application.

Waiting listsYou can ask for your child’s name to go on a waiting listfor any schools that you applied for. For schools outsidethe Bradford district, you must contact the relevant localauthority.

If any places become available, they will be filled in thesame order as the admission policy and not how longthe name has been on the list. It is possible for namesto fall down the waiting list if other children are addedwho qualify higher within the admission policy. Waitinglists are generally kept until the end of the Autumn term(December) either by us or the school.

When we write to you to tell you which school your childhas been offered, we will tell you who to contact regardingthe waiting list for your preferred schools.

Independent appealsYou can make a formal appeal, to an independent appealspanel for any school that you have applied for.

This is a legal process and places are not ‘reserved’ forappeal panels to decide which children should be givenplaces. The year group will be full and the panel will onlyconsider exceptional reasons why your child should beadmitted to the school above the admission number.

Appeal forms are available from the Admissions Team, except for Bingley Grammar and Dixons Academies(except Dixons Cottingley Academy). You must contact

the schools direct for an appeal form. For schools outsidethe Bradford district, you must contact the relevant localauthority.

For any academic year you can only appeal once for aparticular school, however you may request a furtherappeal if your circumstances have changed significantly.

If your appeal is unsuccessful, you can contact theAdmissions Team on 01274 439200 to discuss whathappens next. We expect parents to take up anyplace offered by an independent appeals panel withina reasonable time, which would normally be by thebeginning of the next term.

We urge you to accept a place at the school you havebeen offered – it will not affect your chances of getting aplace at your preferred school either from the waiting list orat appeal. You could also risk your child having no schoolplace in September.

Can I educate my child at home?If you prefer to educate your child at home, the law allowsthis. However, the law says that you must make sure yourchild gets ‘efficient full-time education suitable to her or hisage, ability and aptitude and to any special needs she orhe may have’.

If you plan to educate your child at home, you musttell us as we have a duty to make sure you do thisproperly. Please phone us on 01274 439340 or [email protected]

Special educational needsThis section explains the admissions process for childrenwho have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

For all children who have an EHCP, we want to makethe move to secondary school as smooth as possible. To prepare for the move, a representative from the LocalAuthority will discuss it with you and your child at their Year5 Annual Review; this review is known as a TransitionalReview. The process will be repeated, if necessary, at theYear 6 Transitional Review.

At this review, your choice of schools will be discussed andthe one chosen will be noted down on the Annual Reviewpaperwork. This does not guarantee a place, but it startsthe process of looking at what is available. The Councilhas a duty to name the school you ask for unless:

l The school is unsuitable for your child’s age, ability,aptitude or special educational needs;

l The placement would be incompatible with the efficienteducation of the other children with whom yourchild would be educated, or with the efficient use ofresources.

If your child has an EHCP, you do not follow the standardadmissions process, you will be sent a letter and aSchools Preference Form. You need to fill in this form withyour preferred school(s). To find out about the schoolswithin the Bradford district with specialist provision forchildren with Special Educational Needs, please refer tosection 3.

The Special Educational Needs Assessment & ReviewTeam will decide whether the school you have chosen isappropriate to meet your child’s needs and then consultwith the school about a place for your child. Schools haveup to 15 working days to respond to the consultation.

Places at schools outside the Bradford district will only beconsidered in very exceptional circumstances.

Frequently asked questions:

When a transfer of school takes place, will the EHCPbe changed?

Yes. Your child’s EHCP will be amended to name the new

school. Unless the needs of your child have changed, all other parts of the EHCP will stay the same. Once aschool has been agreed and named on the EHCP you willnormally be offered a place at that school.

Will the support received in primary school continuein the same way in secondary school?

The level of support will be discussed at your child’sAnnual Review. Staff from your proposed secondaryschool may also attend to learn more about your child.Sometimes the level of support, and the way it is delivered, may change. The new school may do things differently.Once you know which school your child is going to, youcan contact the school’s Special Educational NeedsCo-ordinator (SENCo). They will be more than happy todiscuss things with you.

Does my child have to go to a secondary specialschool or resourced provision?

If your child is already at a primary special school orresourced provision, it may be more appropriate for themto go to a secondary special school. If you would like toconsider a mainstream school, you will only be able to doso if:

l The school can meet your child’s needs;l Your child’s attendance will not affect the education of

other children. The Special Educational Needs Assessment Team canhelp you with this. They can advise you whether the schoolyou have chosen is the best one to meet your child’sneeds. Again, all this will be discussed at your child’sTransitional Reviews in Years 5 and 6.

Will transport be available to secondary school?

Many pupils who have an EHCP travel to school with theirparents, or independently. Some pupils may be eligible fortravel assistance.

Provision of transport to and from school will be discussedwith you at your child’s review meeting. The outcome willdepend on your child’s needs and the distance from yourchild’s home to school.

If transport assistance is needed, you will need to make anapplication to the Transport Team.

A Transport Panel will consider your child’s needs andmake a decision about whether some form of transportassistance can be provided. This may include providing abus pass or, in some cases, a taxi, to enable transport toand from school.

If I do not agree with the naming of a school on mychild’s statement or EHCP, can I appeal and wherewould I go to do this?

Yes, you can appeal. However, the first thing you shoulddo is speak to your child’s named Special EducationalNeeds Casework Officer and let them know that you areunhappy with the school named on the EHCP. You may beable to resolve the issue between you.

When we name the school on your child’s EHCP, you willbe sent a letter. This letter will explain your rights of appealif you are unhappy with the school named; and who youshould contact in the first instance.

Where can I go for help and advice?

If you are still unhappy, the Special Educational Needsand Disability Information, Advice & Support Service(SENDIASS) may be able to help. They offer free, impartialadvice and can help with all issues that may affect yourchild, including admission to schools, school placementsand the Council’s special needs procedures. Their role isto work with you and the Council to try to find a solution, which includes:

l providing information on all aspects of SEN, includinglocal procedures

l helping you to complete forms or write letters

l helping you to understand documents and reports

l helping you to prepare for meetings and accompanyingyou to meetings with other professionals - e.g. staff atyour child’s school - if this is required

l signposting to other local and national sources ofsupport

They will also explain what you need to do if youwant to make an appeal. If you wish to contact them, you can call them on 01274 513300 or email them [email protected]

Please don’t hesitate to contact them. They will be only toohappy to help.

Who else can I speak to about the change of schools?

You can speak to staff at your child’s current school or atthe new school. You can also talk to the Council’s SpecialEducational Needs Assessment Team. You can contactthem on 01274 435750 (choose ‘Option One’).

What if my child wants to transfer toanother secondary school?

Transferring schools, other than at normal transition times, can be very disruptive to your child’s education and is notrecommended. If you want to apply for admission into anyyear group after 1 September and at any other time duringthe school year, you must fill in an ‘in-year applicationform’.

In Bradford, children can only change schools at the startof a full term unless there are special reasons.

In-year application forms are available from schools, fromthe Admissions Team or can be downloaded from theBradford Council websitewww.bradford.gov.uk. If applying for any Catholic schoolplease contact the school direct.

Fair Access Protocol

All local authorities must have a Fair Access Protocol toensure that access to education is secured quickly for

children who have no school place. Children who aredealt with under the protocol are likely to be the mostvulnerable or present challenging behaviour and whocannot reasonably be managed through the normaladmissions process. Children admitted through the protocolmay be placed in a year group which is full and will takeprecedence over other children on the waiting list. It is thelocal authority’s decision to determine which children aredealt with by the protocol and therefore the procedure fallsoutside the normal admission arrangements set out in thisbooklet.

Planning ahead for your childYour child will probably be both excited and anxious aboutchanging school. This is normal. Some children may needmore support in managing change and challenge at thistime. You, your child’s primary school and the secondaryschool can help to prepare your child for this change.

AttendanceYour child must go to school regularly so she or he canlearn, achieve and make friends. Even if your child onlymisses school occasionally, it can affect their work. It isyour responsibility to make sure that your child goes toschool regularly and on time. It is really important that yourchild builds up a good pattern of attendance early in theirsecondary school. Good attendance at school will helpyour child to achieve.

Holidays in term-timeYou should take family holidays or trips abroad duringthe school holidays. If you have to take holidays duringterm-time you must make an application, in advance ofthe holiday, to the Headteacher who can give permissionin exceptional circumstances. It is up to the headteacherhow many days they give permission for, if at all. If youtake your child on holiday in term-time without the school’spermission, you may be fined.

The school may take your child off its register if they donot return on the agreed date. This means you would needto apply again for a place for your child when they return. There is no guarantee that they will be able to continue atthe school. You may have to apply for a place for them atanother school, which will disrupt their education.

What can I do to help my child succeed at school?

Your child’s journey to schoolKey points to remember:l Make sure you read and understand the Home to

School Travel and Transport Policy for Childrenof Compulsory School Age if entitlement to schooltransport is important to you.

l School priority admission areas and feeder schools arenot relevant to transport eligibility.

l Transport is generally only provided to the nearestavailable qualifying school where the distance criteria ismet.

l The Council uses a GIS measuring system, no othermeasurement is valid.

l The priority area school for your address may not be thenearest school.

l It is vital you carefully consider the transport implicationsbefore you make your application for a school place.

l Please contact us if you need advice.

Home to school travel assistance

You should consider carefully how your child will get toand from the school(s) you apply for before you makeyour application for a school place.

Children will only be entitled to free travel assistance if thereis an entitlement under the Council’s Home to School Traveland Transport Policy for Children of Compulsory SchoolAge. If a sibling or other local child is already in receipt oftransport to a school, this does not guarantee that a newchild will automatically qualify for transport to the sameschool. The policy criteria must be met in all cases.

Where there is no entitlement to travel assistance from theCouncil, parents are fully responsible for all financial costsand transport arrangements for their child.

The full Home to School Travel and Transport Policy forChildren of Compulsory School Age can be found on ourwebsite https://www.bradford.gov.uk/education-and-skills/travel-assistance/assistance-with-travel-to-home-school-and-college/

Please note that entitlement to travel assistance willnot be assessed on the basis of priority admissionareas, feeder schools or where travel assistance hashistorically been provided. Applications are assessedagainst the following criteria.

Bradford Council in accordance with its statutory duty, will provide free home to school assistance for children ofsecondary school age to the nearest available school totheir home address, if they live 3 miles or more from thatschool.

It is important to note that the ‘priority’ or ‘feeder’school for your address may not be the nearest school.

Bradford Council will measure using the shortest walkingroute to calculate distances to establish which is thenearest ‘suitable qualifying school’ to a child’s homeaddress. We determine your nearest ‘suitable qualifyingschool’ with places available at the time of allocation. If youapply outside of this time, because for example you moveaddress; we will determine it at the time of the application. The Council uses a Geographical Information System (GIS)to measure and calculate home to school distances. Themeasurements produced by the Council’s GIS are thedefinitive distance calculations that the Council will useto determine travel assistance eligibility.

For children from low income families, the policy isextended to provide travel assistance to any one of thethree nearest state secondary schools to the home addresswhich are between 2 and 6 miles from the home address.Children from low income groups are defined as those whoare entitled to free school meals.

Entitlement is also extended to those children from lowincome families who are attending their nearest faith school(the child must be of that faith) which is 2 miles or more, but not more than 15 miles from home by the shortest roadroute. To evidence that the child is attending a school basedon religion or belief, their baptism certificate or a written

Page 14: Applying for a secondary school - guide for September 2020 entry · 2019-09-05 · Timetable for applications to start secondary school for the school year 2020-2021. Closing date

statement supporting the reasons for selecting a faithschool must be provided.

Once eligible for assistance with travel because of lowincome, your child will receive assistance for the rest ofthe school year, subject to there being no other changesthat may affect eligibility, such as a house move or changeof school.

Unless the low income criteria are met, travelassistance will not be provided to a school if:

l There is any nearer school to the home for whicha parent did not apply on the original admissionapplication

l There is any nearer school which was listed asa lower preference on the original admissionapplication

l The parent has rejected an offer of a place at anynearer school

What is the nearest school for transportpurposes?

Any parent who wants to find out which school the Councilconsiders to be their nearest school for transport purposesshould send an email to [email protected].

The email should state the child’s name and address, asking what the Council considers to be the nearestsecondary school for transport purposes to that address

Points to remember

l An offer of a school place does not guarantee freeschool transport even if you live over three milesaway from the school you have been offered, evenif it is your priority admission area school.

l Before you apply for a school place and for travelassistance you should read the information madeavailable to you in this booklet and the full travelassistance policy on the website: https://www.bradford.gov.uk/education-and-skills/travel-assistance/assistance-with-travel-to-home-school-and-college/

If your child does not qualify for free travel assistanceyou may be able to purchase a bus pass for a vehicleoperating to the school. You can find bus and travel passinformation at https://www.wymetro.com/schools/

Pupils with an education, health and careplan (EHCP)

The admission of pupils with an education, health and careplan is dealt with by a separate procedure. Such childrenwill be admitted to the school named on the EHCP withoutreference to school admission policies.

Distances from school

In some of the admission policies in Section 2, proximityto school is used as a tie-breaker, those living the closestbeing given priority. This is a straight line measurement, taken from the Ordnance Survey reference point for thehome address to the main entrance of the school.

Where the offer of places to those applicants withequi-distant addresses would lead to oversubscription, the decision of whom will be offered the place will bemade by random selection.

Twins and siblings from a multiple birth

Where a family of twins or siblings from a multiple birthrequest admission and there is only one place available, the remaining siblings will also be offered places above theadmission number.

School Admissions PoliciesCatholic means a member of a church in communion withSee of Rome. A certificate of baptism in a Catholic church,or a certificate of reception into the full communion of theCatholic Church, will normally evidence this. This includesthe Eastern Catholic Churches.
