PhysicsCOURSE TITLE PHYSICSQUALIFICATION AS AND A2LEVEL 3AWARDING BODY OCR

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:A minimum of 5 separate subject GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A*-C, to include grade C or above in English Language or Literature and grade B or above in Maths.

Also GCSE grade B or above in Additional Science or Triple Science, Physics.

Brief outline of courseA level Physics starts by continuing the work done in GCSE. In Year 1, students study topics on; Mechanics, Electric circuits, Materials and Waves and the Particle Nature of Light. In Year 2, the course introduces students to topics not met before including: Further Mechanics, Electric and Magnetic Fields, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Thermodynamics, Nuclear Radiation, Oscillations and Space.

The amount and level of mathematics contained within the Physics course is higher than other sciences and pupils not taking A level Maths are welcome to take A level Physics. However, they must be aware that there will be an expectation that those pupils will complete additional work, above and

beyond the normal homework tasks, at home, to learn and practise the specific mathematical skills that are a fundamental part of achieving success in advanced Physics.

The AS qualification will no longer count towards the final grade of an A Level but will be a separate qualification in its own right. Students should also be aware that Year 1 is common to both the AS qualification and the A level qualification.

The assessment of practical work in Science will not contribute to the final A Level but will be reported separately in a certificate of endorsement. The exam board will set out the requirements for the practical skills. Each student will need to carry out a minimum of 12 practical activities. Students will be required to sit a separate exam (40% of the total mark) in the context of these, and other, practical activities at the end of Year 2. To achieve the highest marks, students will need to show knowledge and understanding of the experiments that they have conducted throughout the 2 year course and be able to apply their skills and knowledge of practical skills to experiments never seen before.

Who can I contact for more information about the course?Mr S Chodzynski, Mr J Snow

What could this qualification lead to?The course contains an enhanced level of Mathematics and students who achieve the highest grades often match Physics with Maths and/or Further Maths. It is common for students to also match Physics with another Science, a Humanity and/or an Engineering subject. This results in candidates who have a good range of subjects to offer to Universities and employers. Physics is an “in demand” subject by Universities and Employers around the world. There is a shortage of Physicists, especially girls, and the subject leads into a wide variety of further courses and occupations including: Research, Teaching, Particle Physics, European and US Space Industries, Theoretical Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Manufacturing, Business Management, Project Management, Consultancy, Technical Writing, advising Government bodies and many more.
