Withdrawal of Home Economics and Economics elective (CAO Code: AS004)

St. Angela’s College, Sligo

St. Angela’s College has taken the decision to withdraw its offering of the AS004

Home Economics and Economics elective through the CAO. However, the overall

number of places available on the BAPME programme will not be reduced and

student places that would have been allocated to the AS004 Home Economics and

Economics elective will now be allocated to alternative electives. This decision was

taken due to difficulties sourcing Economics teaching hours for our students on

School Placement coupled with limited employment opportunities for our Economics

graduates.

CAO applicants for the AS004 elective who are still interested in pursuing the BA

PME programme should consider applying for another elective through the CAO.

New MA in Social Justice and

Public Policy: Waterford IT Dr Sean Healy, Director of Social Justice Ireland, will launch the new MA in Social Justice and Public Policy on 14 March 2018 at 2:30 PM in the Tourism and Leisure Building Atrium, Cork Road campus, Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).

Careers Newsletter No 1 April 2018: Colaiste Chiarain, Athlone

In partnership with Social Justice Ireland, the School of Humanities at WIT will offer a new MA in Social Justice and Public Policy from September 2018.

Dr Healy, comments that “In a time of great social, cultural, and political flux in Irish life, this MA offers a well-recognised qualification which facilitates graduate’s personal and career development in Social Justice and Public Policy.”

The programme participants, he says, will “develop a variety of practical skills from communications to strategic management to critical analysis, which can be applied in both work and voluntary settings. Students will learn with a range of lecturers, both academics and practitioners, using case studies from Irish and International contexts.”

Paul Clogher, course leader and lecturer with WIT’s School of Humanities says the MA is particularly suitable for students seeking to promote a fairer society, including people from business, community, voluntary, social inclusion, environmental organisations, trade unions, public service and religious sectors.

“Drawing on research and teaching expertise in both the School of Humanities and Social Justice Ireland, the programme explores diverse areas such as social analysis and policy, human rights and theories of justice, and traditions of social justice,” he says.

A two-year part-time programme, the MA seeks to engage meaningfully in social change towards a more just and inclusive society, focusing on influencing public policy. At the heart of the programme is a view of the profound and inalienable dignity of the human person, which is enhanced through meaningful participation in relationships and community, protected through recognition of human rights, and realised through opportunities to develop inclusive relationships. The programme seeks to form graduates with a belief that this vision of a more inclusive world and just society is possible.

The MA is delivered part-time over two years, normally over seventeen evening and all-day sessions and two block weeks over two years in a Dublin city centre location.

“The programme runs in a convenient Dublin city centre location and allows participants to study and network with other students and professionals from a wide range of experiences and disciplines. It equally caters for a balance with work or other commitments. The MA is embedded in flexible self-directed learning with a contact time of approximately two days per month over 2 years,” adds Dr Healy.

SUSI Student Grant Application System NOW Open

Key dates:

5th April 2018 – Opening for online applications

14th June 2018 – Priority closing for students renewing applications

12th July 2018 – Priority closing for new applications

SUSI, the national student grant awarding body, has announced that its online application system for the 2018/19 academic year is now open (today 5th April).

SUSI Communications and Information Services Manager, Aoife Greene advised, “We would encourage all students, both new applicants and those progressing to the next year of their course, to make their application as soon as possible to assist in timely processing.

Aoife Greene added, “We advise students to visit our website www.susi.ie and use our Eligibility Reckoner before making their application. This will give them an indication as to their eligibility for student grant funding. We also have a number of self-help tools available on our website, including videos and detailed guidance notes for making an application.

“It is important to reiterate that students who are progressing to the next year of their course must renew their grants and we have e-mailed students in the lead up to opening to inform them of the process for renewing. The priority closing date for renewal applications is 14th June, 2018.

“In relation to new applicants, last year we had awarded over 20,000 new applicants prior to CAOoffers. This alleviated an element of financial uncertainty that had previously existed for new students. To ensure a continuation of this we would encourage all students to submit their application as soon as possible. They do not need to have their leaving certificate results, or to have accepted a course, in order to submit an application. The priority closing date for new applications is 12th July 2018 .

“We would also encourage all students who apply to ensure prompt submission of any documents that SUSI may request as this will assist in the timely processing of

their applications. “We are aware this can be a stressful time for students and their families and we are committed to engaging with them to ensure that all applications can be processed as smoothly and efficiently as possible.”

experience. You have the option of further study and training as a fully qualified accountant. You will qualify for some exemptions on professional body accountancy exams such as ACCA and CPA.

So why choose this new path over the more traditional route?

No college fees.Earn money while you study.Gain work experience.Suits practical students who thrive when they put their learning into practice. Also offers you the opportunity to train to be a fully qualified accountant and offers exemptions from professional accountancy exams (as offered to graduates of most Level 8 Accountancy courses.) How does Accountancy Fare on the Labour Market?

Qualified and part qualified accountants are currently in-demand, particularly in the pharmaceutical, manufacturing and energy industries, as are accountants with experience in insolvency and forensics. There is also a steady demand for compliance and risk professionals. According to the National Skills Bulletin 2017 talent was sourced from abroad to fill accounting positions showing a real skills shortage in this area.

The future demand for business and financial skills is likely to be particularly affected by the impact of Brexit. On the one hand, numerous financial institutions are expanding their business or setting up in Ireland, including JP Morgan, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, with IDA announcing in July 2017 that they have secured deals with more than a dozen London-based banks and finance houses to move some of their operations to Dublin in preparation for Brexit42. On the other hand, a report by the Department of Finance (2016) states that insurance/financial services are one of the three services sectors considered to be the most exposed in terms of exports to the UK. As such, the overall impact on skills requirements in the financial sector is yet unclear.
