For terminal blocks with a rated cross-sectionbetween 0,2 mm2 and 35 mm2 inclusive, theminimum range contained in table 2 applies. The
conductors may be rigid (solid or stranded) orflexible. The manufacturer shall state the typesand the maximum and minimum crosssections of
conductors that can be connected and, ifapplicable,the number of conductorssimultaneously connectable to each clampingunit. The manufacturer shall also state anynecessary preparation of the end of theconductor.

A special agreement shall be made between userand manufacturer if the conditions duringtransport and storage, e.g. temperature andhumidity, differ from those defined in 6.1, exceptthat, unless otherwise specified, the followingtemperature range applies during transport andstorage:between –25 °C and +55 °C and, forshort periods not exceeding 24 h, up to +70 °C.

7.1.1 Clamping units P
All parts of terminals which maintain contact andcarry current shall be of metal having adequatemechanical strength.

Terminal connections shall be such that theconductors may be connected by means ofscrews,springs or other equivalent means so asto ensure that the necessary contact pressure ismaintained.

Terminals shall be so constructed that theconductors can be clamped between suitable
surfaces without any significant damage either toconductors or terminals.

Terminals shall not allow the conductors to bedisplaced or be displaced themselves in amanner detrimental to the operation of equipmentand the insulation voltage shall not be reducedbelow the rated values.

If required by the application, terminals andconductors may be connected by means of cable
lugs for copper conductors only.

If the manufacturer has declared a value of therated impulse withstand voltage, the requirementsof 7.2.3 and 7.2.3.1 of IEC 60947-1 apply. If
applicable, the impulse withstand voltage testshall be carried out in accordance with 8.4.3 a)

7.2.3 Rated short-time withstand current P
A terminal block shall be capable of withstandingfor 1 s the rated short-time withstand currentwhich corresponds to 120 A/ mm2 of its ratedcross-section, in accordance with 8.4.6.

The voltage drop on a terminal block caused bythe conductor connection, measured according to8.4.4, shall not exceed the values specified in8.4.4 and, where applicable, in 8.4.7.

next smaller cross-sections shall be insertedunhindered in the opened clamping unit and be

8.3.3.5 Verification of rated cross-section (special testwith gauges) P

The measuring section of the gauge shall be ableto penetrate freely into the terminal aperture tothe full depth of the terminal (see also note toTable 7).

b) The power-frequency withstand verification ofsolid insulation shall be made in accordance with8.3.3.4.1, item 3), of IEC 60947-1. The value ofthe test voltage shall be as stated in table 12A ofIEC 60947-1 (see 8.3.3.4.1, item 3) b) i), of IEC60947-1).

8.4.4 Verification of the voltage drop P
The voltage drop shall be verified P
a) before and after the test of mechanicalstrength of clamping units (see 8.3.3.1);b) before and after the temperature-rise test (see
8.4.5);c) before and after the short-time withstandcurrent test (see 8.4.6);d) before, during and after the ageing test (see
8.4.7).

8.4.5 Temperature-rise test N
The test is made simultaneously on five adjacentterminal blocks connected in series byPVC-insulated conductors of the rated
cross-section, as shown in figure 2.
