Cyber Security
The interdisciplinary PhD in Computing program brings together faculty members from the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Geosciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and Physics. With this broad reach lies strength: faculty and students are able to leverage a diverse and unique set of approaches, skills and expertise that enable and complement their research effort.
Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) is concerned with constructing mathematical models and quantitative analysis techniques using computers to analyze and solve problems in science and engineering. The knowledge gained through CSE differs from understanding achieved through traditional science and engineering, which uses theory and laboratory experiment.
One of the more recent fields of academic study, computer science is fundamental in today’s digital world. Almost every major challenge facing our world is turning to computing for a solution, from conquering disease to eliminating hunger, from improving education to protecting the environment. In another ten to fifteen years, it is expected that all major systems and infrastructure in the world will be controlled by software. Computer science will play a critical role in this transformation.
Cyber security aims to design secure and privacy-preserving protocols for computers, networks, programs, and data. Faculty and students at Boise State pursue cutting-edge research and best practices in defending infrastructure from cyber-incursion caused by hackers or hostile state actors. We address emerging national challenges and advanced threats to the nation’s power grid, water supply, and other critical infrastructure.
