The Paradigm Shift
“Consumerization” is happening, just as predicted
Software + Services is the best of both worlds
Taxonomy AND Tagging are BOTH important
Social networking & social software are on the rise
“Knowledge in modern organizations isn't just 80% undocumented, it's 95% invisible. Social software painlessly teases that hidden material into the light, over time, and I am looking forward to a better future when everyone in the group, division, and company is working to their greatest advantage as a result.”
-- Patrick, Guest blogger on Microsoft KN Blog

What is “Social Computing”?
“Social computing is a general term for an area of computer science that is concerned with the intersection of social behavior and computational systems. It has become an important concept for use in business.”
Source: Wikipedia
2 Generally Accepted Categories in Social Computing:
1. Web 2.0
2. Enterprise 2.0 or Enterprise Social Software
What is Web 2.0?The term "Web 2.0" is commonly associated with web applications which facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web.
A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them.
Source: Wikipedia
Enterprise Social Software (2.0)
Comprises social software as used in "enterprise contexts
Includes social and networked modifications to corporate intranets and other classic software platforms to organize communication
In contrast to traditional enterprise software, which imposes structure prior to use, enterprise social software tends to encourage use prior to providing structure
Teams versus Communities
Teams are groups of people that work together to get a job done, not necessarily to simply share knowledge
Communities are groups of people with similar skills or interests that come together to share knowledge and develop those skills and competencies
Blogs versus Wikis
Blogs:Opinionated
One-sided
Knowledge sharing
Wikis:Factual (mostly )
Community driven
Knowledge sharing
Web 2.0 enables Emergence of Social Software
"Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform." 2

Social Computing is the next big wave
“Social Computing is not a fad. Nor is it something that will pass you or your company by. Gradually, Social Computing will impact almost every role, at every kind of company, in all parts of the world. Firms should approach Social Computing as an ongoing learning process, using some of the best practices of firms that have successfully taken the first steps.”1

What Analysts Are Saying
“To thrive in an era of Social Computing, companies must abandon top-down management and communication tactics, weave communities into their products and services, use employees and partners as marketers, and become part of a living fabric of brand loyalists.” 1
“Enterprise social software provides an open and freeform environment that (1) stimulates large-scale participation through informal interactions, and (2) aggregates these interactions into an emergent structure that reflects the collective attitudes, dispositions and knowledge of the participants.” 2
“Executives say they are investing in Web 2.0 to communicate with customers and business partners and to encourage collaboration inside the company.” 3

“Blogging is a great option, for users can search blogs using keywords, and sharing firmwide intellectual property and collaborating with colleagues. It’s better than using e-mail because we can archive and retrieve all the posted ideas and information for later use.” 2

Know Your Organization & People
Must be openness and social equality
There will always be generational gaps when it comes to technology adoption
Find your evangelists
Leverage your “Generation Millennial” Employees
Encourage “lurking”
Remember the Wikipedia “90 – 9 – 1” rule
Why Do All This?
None of these examples are a means to an end, but collectively social software provides:
A way to discover new knowledge
A way to keep and leverage that knowledge for big impact, cost savings, innovation, the list goes on…
A way to get the MOST out of your MOST important asset: people
