1. Program Overview The mission of Osaka University is to nurture outstanding individuals who possess a high sense of ethics and wish to become global citizens and leaders in a variety of fields worldwide under the objective of “Live Locally, Grow Globally”. For this reason, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, and the Department of Chemistry in the School of Science have established the International Undergraduate Program in Science for international students. The program will take 4.5 years in total and award a bachelor’s degree. This program is overseen by the International College of Osaka University. The outline of the program is: ・ Entrance examinations are conducted in English for each department. ・ For six months prior to enrollment, Osaka University will offer intensive
Japanese language education and some preliminary science classes depending on the chosen major.
・ Enrolled students mainly take classes in English at the beginning of the undergraduate program. In the first 1.5 years of the program, students study liberal arts subjects and major subjects in English and/or Japanese together with Japanese undergraduate students.
・ Osaka University offers advanced Japanese language education for the first 1.5 years.
・ Students then focus on specific subjects in the students' respective majors, which are taught mainly in Japanese.
・ Students enrolled in this program will be assigned to on-campus dormitories for the first year on a preferential basis.

2. Duration of the Program Preliminary and extensive Japanese language education: From October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021 (6 months) Undergraduate School: From April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2025

4. Eligibility for Application
In order to apply to this program, applicants must meet certain requirements set by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Accordingly, students meeting at least one of the following criteria by September 30, 2020 can apply.
1. International applicants (students from outside of Japan) who have completed a standard 12-
year school education curriculum of a country other than Japan. Included here are applicants who have completed a standard 12-year school education curriculum in a country outside Japan in less than 12 years as a result of being promoted up a grade ahead of their peers.
2. International applicants who are at least 18 years of age and who have passed an examination in a country other than Japan which certifies that they have scholastic ability equivalent to a person who has completed a standard 12-year school education curriculum in the said country.
3. International applicants who have completed a school curriculum in a country other than Japan that corresponds to that of a senior high school in Japan (including those who have passed an examination which certifies that they have scholastic ability equivalent to a person who has completed such a curriculum), and who have completed pre-university preparatory education required for admission to Japanese universities as designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
4. International applicants who have completed a curriculum in a school that is considered to be the equivalent of high school (upper secondary) level and met the requirements stipulated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The applicants should have completed at least 11 years of education in a country outside Japan at institution(s) that meet standards laid down by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
5. Applicants who have completed a program of study at an educational institution considered within the educational system of a foreign country to be equivalent to the school curriculum corresponding to Japanese senior high school in that country (only if completion of the program is considered comparable to completion of a standard 12-year school curriculum under the country’s school education system).

6. Applicants who have completed a program of study at an educational institution considered within the educational system of a foreign country to be equivalent to the school curriculum corresponding to Japanese senior high school in that country (even if completion of the program is not considered comparable to completion of a standard 12-year school curriculum under the country’s school education system) and who have completed pre-university preparatory education required for admission to Japanese universities as designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
7. Applicants who have obtained the International Baccalaureate qualification awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Switzerland.
8. Applicants who have obtained the Abitur issued by the Federal Republic of Germany for college entrance.
9. Applicants who have obtained the Baccalaureate Diploma issued by the French Republic for college entrance.
10. Applicants who have obtained the General Certificate of Advanced Level accredited as a qualification for admission to a university in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
11. Applicants who have completed the standard 12-year school curriculum in one of the special schools for foreigners in Japan that are certified by the international evaluating organizations designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (WASC, ACSI, CIS).
Notes: 1. Applicants who have completed their studies at a non-accredited international school
in Japan or are unsure whether they are eligible to apply, should contact the office of the International College as early as possible before applying.
2. Applicants are encouraged to apply only if they plan to pursue their studies continuously and without interruption from enrollment to graduation. In particular, applicants from countries with compulsory-military-service requirements should ensure they do not have to fulfill their military-service requirements while enrolled in the program.
3. In case applicants do not arrive in Japan by the date designated by the university, their enrollment might be cancelled even if they were able to start their studies on October 1, 2020.
4. Even after enrollment, applicants can be expelled for poor attendance or unsatisfactory grades.

5. Application Procedure 1. First of all, applicants should visit the following Application Registration website
and complete their registration. https://e-apply.jp/n/osaka-u-inter After completing the registration, applicants will receive an automatic reply e-mail
containing a mailing address for the application documents and a URL for downloading the application form.
2. Next, applicants should pay the application fee. For more details, please refer to page 12.
3. Finally, applicants should post the required application documents to the mailing address that is provided in the automatic reply e-mail after completing the registration. Please note that application documents must reach our mailing address by March 19, 2020. The application documents must be sent by a registered mailing service such as EMS, FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc. We cannot accept responsibility for loss or delay in the delivery of the application material.

Application Documents-2 Documents Certifying Eligibility for Application See below for documents required for applicants under each of the application eligibility criteria (see 'Eligibility for application' in pages 3–4).
Criteria 1 and 4
1. Certificate of graduation from the last school attended or a corresponding certificate of
scheduled graduation. In case the last school attended is of a higher education level
(university or other tertiary institution), then the secondary level certificate of graduation
(corresponding to high school in Japan) should also be included
2. Academic transcript from the last school attended. In case the last school attended is of a
tertiary education level (e.g. university), then the secondary-level academic transcript
(corresponding to high school in Japan) should also be included

Important notes when preparing the application documents
*Applicants who have not yet graduated from high school at the time of application may submit a certificate of expected graduation and predicted scores for the academic transcript.
*If subjects and score details on the academic transcript are written in codes or abbreviations, the appropriate description in English should be attached.
*All certificates and other documents need to be certified copies as issued by the school principal or the corresponding highest-level administrator.
Application Documents-3 Letter of Recommendation
Applicants should have a letter of recommendation submitted from the principal and/or a senior science teacher of the last secondary school they attended. The letter should include an evaluation of their personality and academic results. The format is not designated. A science teacher who knows the applicant well is preferable. The letter should be sealed and signed by the principal / teacher (opened letters will not be accepted).
Application Documents-4 Results of Standardized Tests for University Admission
Applicants should submit official scores of any standardized academic tests for university entrance that they have taken. See (1) to (18) below for information about tests in each country. In cases where the test result is either pass or fail, applicants need to have passed the test. We will accept predicted scores for those who have not graduated yet. Applicants may submit the following scores or results, or their school may send them directly to Osaka University.
Applicants who are from a country or region without a national standardized test, or who cannot submit their standardized test results during the application period designated by Osaka University, for a reason related to the education system of their country or region, will need to take (13) or (18). We recommend applicants take EJU (18) if possible (Chemistry and Physics for Science, Course 2 for Mathematics either in English or Japanese); otherwise SAT (13.1) (Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics- Level 2).
Please note the following: If the documents to be submitted are written in a language other than English, a
verified translation into English needs also to be sent. Verification of a translation (consistency between the translations and the originals) may be obtained at an embassy, at the high school of the applicant, or at other organizations.

(1) Under the International Baccalaureate Educational System
Applicants should submit a copy of their International Baccalaureate Diploma and their IB final examination performance evaluation certificate. The Institution Code of Osaka University for IB is 036164.
(2) Under the German Educational System
Applicants should submit a copy of their Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife and their performance evaluation certificate.
(3) Under the French Educational System
Applicants should submit a copy of their Diplome du Baccalauréat de l'Enseignement du Second Degré and their Relevé de Notes.
(4) Under the Chinese Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of the National Higher Education Entrance Examination, or their results of a standardized test for university admission administered by the Shanghai Municipal Educational Examination Authority or the Beijing Municipal Educational Examination Authority.
(5) Under the Korean Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of the College Scholastic Ability Test.
(6) Under the Malaysian Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia). Applicants who wish their results of the U.K. GCE to be considered in the University’s screening process, should follow the instructions below described in ‘(12) Under the U.K. Educational System’.
(7) Under the Singaporean Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of the Singapore GCE ‘A’ Level. Applicants who wish their results of the U.K. GCE to be considered in the University’s screening process, should follow the instructions below described in ‘(12) Under the U.K. Educational System’. Applicants who wish their results of the Malaysian STPM to be considered in the University’s screening process, should follow the instructions above described in ‘(6) Under the Malaysian Educational System’.
(8) Under the Thai Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of the National University Joint Entrance Examination.
(9) Under the Hong Kong Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of the HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination). Applicants who wish their results of the U.K. GCE to be considered in the University’s screening process, should follow the instructions below described in ‘(12) Under the U.K. Educational System’.

(10) Under the Taiwanese Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of General Scholastic Ability Test.
(11) Under the Egyptian Educational System
Applicants should submit their results of Thanawiya Amma.
(12) Under the U.K. Educational System
Applicants should submit one of the following:
1. Their results of three subjects of the GCE Advanced Level, or
2. Their results of a total of four subjects: two of the GCE Advanced Level and two of the GCE Advanced Subsidiary Level.
(13) Under a U.S. Educational System
Applicants should submit their official scores of one of the following:
1. SAT Subject Tests
Recommended SAT Subject Tests are Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics-Level 2.
Institution Code of Osaka University for SAT is 7895.
2. ACT
Institution Code of Osaka University for ACT is 7042.
3. AP
Recommended AP Subjects are Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus
Institution Code of Osaka University for AP is 7895.
(14) Under a Canadian Educational System
Applicants should submit the results of a national standardized test administered by their province as a pre-requisite to study at university.
(15) Under an Australian Educational System
Applicants should submit the results of a national standardized test administered by their country or state as a pre-requisite to study at university.
(16) Under the New Zealand Educational System
Applicants should submit their record of learning of the NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) Level 3, or their record of the University Entrance, Bursaries and Scholarships Examination.
(17) Under the Educational Systems of Other Countries or Regions with National Standardized Tests
Applicants should submit a performance evaluation certificate of a standardized test that they took in compliance with the test regulations.

(18) Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)
Applicants should submit their official science and mathematics scores. Applicants should take chemistry and physics for science, course 2 for mathematics either in English or Japanese.
Application Documents-5 Essays
Applicants should submit 2 essays on the following topics.
1. “Describe why you wish to study in the International Undergraduate Program in
Science.”
2. “Describe what topic in science has captured your imagination recently, and why.”
Approximately 500-1000 words in English for each essay. Statements with less than 500 words and handwritten ones may be rejected in the screening.
Application Documents-6 Application Fee Payment Certificate
Applicants should submit a transaction confirmation or a remittance receipt. An application fee of 26,800 JPY (Japanese yen) will be required for all applicants applying for admission to the International Undergraduate Program in Science. The application fee must be paid before submitting the application documents.
Application Documents-7 Copy of the applicant’s passport
Applicants should submit a photocopy of the page of their passport showing the photo, name and passport number. Applicants who do not have a valid passport, should submit a photocopy of another official certificate issued by their country, such as a birth certificate or an official registry.
Application Documents-8
Certification of English Language Proficiency Applicants whose native language is English, or who have graduated / are expecting to graduate from a high school in which English is the language of instruction, do not need to submit any English proficiency examinations score.

Other applicants need to take one of the English proficiency examinations listed below and send their official score reports, which need to be no more than two years old at the time of submission.
● TOEFL iBT (Internet-based TOEFL)
A minimum score of 80 is required. If submitting a TOEFL score, applicants need to send one of the below reports. My Best ™ scores is not treated as a TOEFL score in the IUPS.
1. Official score report (sent directly from the American Educational Testing
Services (ETS) to Osaka University)
2. A copy of the examinee’s score record (the document sent to the examinee)
Note: When submitting scores, the points below should be noted:
・ It usually takes at least one month for the official score report to reach Osaka University after issuing a request to the ETS. Applicants should take the exam well ahead of time to ensure that the score reaches our office by the deadline.
・ The Institution Code of Osaka University for TOEFL is 7895.
・ A score from TOEFL-ITP (Institutional Testing Program) cannot be accepted.
・ For more information, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website (http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/) for an overview of TOEFL.
● IELTS Academic Module
A minimum score of 6.0 is required. If submitting an IELTS score, applicants need to send one of the below reports.
1. Test Report Form (sent directly from IELTS to the Osaka University International College Office)
2. A copy of the examinee’s test score report (the document sent to the examinee)
Note: When submitting scores, the points below should be noted:
・The General Training module does not qualify for screening.

Certification of Japanese Language Proficiency Applicants who have a certificate of their proficiency in Japanese language, are recommended to send it as an additional document. In particular, the following certificates are accepted as application material: ・ A copy of a Certificate of JLPT Level N3 or higher. ・ A document certifying that the applicant has Japanese language ability equivalent to or higher than JLPT level N3 prepared by the principal or a Japanese Language teacher of an educational institution. 7. Application fee 1 Application fee The application fee is 26,800 JPY.
●Payment Period is from 10:00 am, February 21, 2020 to 4:59 pm, March 12, 2020 (Japan Time). Please note that the application deadline is March 19, 2020, while the payment deadline is March 12, 2020.
● Application fees are not refundable except in the following cases.
(a) The applicant did not submit the application documents.
(b) The application documents were not accepted.
(c) The applicant made a duplicate payment by mistake.
● Request of a refund of the application fee
Applicants who meet at least one of the above conditions will receive an email containing the instructions to request a refund. The email will be sent to the registered email address.
Please follow the instructions and complete the refund request within 7 days.

2 How to make the payment Three payment methods are available.
A: Payment through the ‘Application Fee Payment System’ (a) Credit Card, (b) China Pay, (c) Convenience Store, (d) Pay-easy
B: Payment through overseas remittance from a bank (See page 14) C: Payment by domestic bank transfer (See page 15)
Method A: Payment through the ‘Application Fee Payment System’ 1. Preparation For applicants who choose to pay by Method A, the necessary requirements are as follows. ● A computer that meets the conditions below. The Receipt of Application Fee Payment System must be printed out for submission. ● An email address The registered email address will be used as the Login ID of the Application Fee Payment System. It may be a problem if the email address is not reachable or is changed or deleted before the end of the entrance examination. Also, applicants should ensure that they can receive emails from @comappjapan.com.” 2. After registering the ID (E-mail address), instructions for setting up a password will be sent to the registered email address. <2> Applicants should then input their basic information and <3> the information about their application

are needed. 3. Payment There are four payment methods that the ‘Application Fee Payment System’ can accept. (a) Credit card (VISA or Master Card only) The card numbers should be into the Payment System (b) China Pay The website of China Pay will be accessed via the Payment System (c) Convenience Store
The fee can be paid at one of the following convenience stores: LAWSON, Family Mart, Daily Yamazaki, Yamazaki Daily Store, MINISTOP, Seicomart
(d) Pay-easy It is possible to pay at a bank* or via the Internet banking service of Pay-easy (a
system operation fee (600 JPY) will be charged in addition to the application fee of 26,800 JPY)

* For (a), (b) and (d), the account holder’s name does not need to match the applicant’s name. * (c) and (d) are available only for those residing in Japan.

After the payment is completed, the receipt of ‘Application Fee Payment’ will be downloadable. It should be printed in A4 size and submitted with the other application materials. Method B: Payment through overseas remittance from a bank The applicants should cover transaction fees charged by both the bank in the applicant’s home country and the MUFG Bank, Ltd. The remittance must be made in the name of the applicant.
Applicants should submit the Remittance Receipt or the Application for Remittance bearing the authorization of the bank to which the money was remitted, along with the other application documents. If the payment amount is incorrect (e.g. because the bank fees were not included), we will not be able to accept the application even if applicants submit all the other necessary documents.

Method C: Payment by domestic transfer Yen-denominated wire transfer from a financial institution in Japan. When making a transfer, applicants must use a transfer application form provided by the bank and write the applicant’s name in the Sender’s Name box on the form. Applicants must submit, along with the other application documents, a copy of the bank remittance application/receipt.

8. Important Notes for Applicants ・ If errors are found in the application documents, the application will not be accepted.
Moreover, changes to the application documents after submission are not allowed.
・ Submitted documents will not be returned.
・ Applicants who have provided false information in their application documents will
not be allowed to enroll and will be expelled if they have already been accepted
・ All communications from the University, including the screening results, will be sent
to the e-mail address provided in the application form. If applicants change their e-mail address, they must update us with the new address immediately.
・ We currently do not accept transfer applicants. ・ The scores of any applicants who decided not to proceed with their application will
be held for two years and then disposed of in line with our program policy for application materials. Scores received after the application period will be disposed of in the same way.
9. Applicant Selection Applicants will be selected through screening of application documents. An interview
may also be held. If an interview is held, applicants will be selected based on the results of the screening of the application documents and the interview.
Interview
If Osaka University considers that an interview is required for an applicant, an interview will be held for the applicant as follows:
Interview period During the period from mid-April to early June, 2020
Location Osaka, Bangkok, San Francisco, or Groningen (Travel expenses will not be paid.)
Content
Interviews will be held on a day specified by the International College within the aforementioned interview period. A basic scientific knowledge assessment will also be carried out as part of the interview. The languages to be used in the interview and the subjects of the assessment will be as follows. 11. Preliminary and extensive Japanese language education
From October 1, 2020, to March 2021
The preliminary and extensive Japanese language education program will be provided at Osaka University to successful applicants who have completed the relevant enrollment procedures. Those who are enrolled in these courses will be registered with Osaka University as research students during that time.
