Essay DetailsThis essay is a space for us to know and understand you better as a person.
Write about an experience from your past, which has signicantly shaped you as a person and your perspective(s) on life.Elaborate upon the experience, your personal engagement with it, and the manner in which it has changed you. Provide otherrelevant details to help us better understand you.
It wasn't until very recently that I became comfortable with spending time by myself. I have spent a large chunk of my life living in large communities of people, boarding school, and hopefully soon, a residential college. The familiarity of being surrounded by people enabled that to become my default. The aspect that I practiced subconsciously and did not pay much attention to, was thepressure I put on myself to constantly please everyone in my life. Growing up, it was very important for everyone to enjoy my company and actively seek it. In retrospect, the downside was that I found myself molding my behavior to suit the larger group, orto specic people. The challenge of being caught up in an attempt to keep everyone happy and provide comic relief is that I neverstopped to think about what I was like when I was by myself. It was only after I transitioned to senior school (Grade 10 onwards) that I found myself amidst a sizeable number of people that let me be myself. I rediscovered interests and passions I had sidelined and found that those give me joy even in the absence of company. Over time, I have started to engage in various activities by myself and nd that I often nd those much more enjoyable. The ability to do so has exposed me to experiences I would not have normally had and given me the condence to explore interests that I never considered as a part of a crowd.
In the course of a liberal education, you will learn to unlearn and question opinions and beliefs that have been important to yourcommunity or you. Reect on a time in the past when you examined or questioned a belief or opinion. What initiated yourthinking? What was the result?
Growing up, I always believed that parents could universally do no wrong. I think children are conditioned to follow instructions and not ask questions. There comes a time after which it is impossible to do so, natural curiosity takes precedence but is never rewarded. These children graduate from school where they are expected to toe the line and are expected to magically grow into curious individuals once they graduate. Over the years, I have tried to replace the lens of emotion with rationality. While it is understandable that we perceive parents to surpass typical experiences, the realization that they come with their own individual struggles is an eye-opening one. I began to realize this when I found my parents torn between some of the choices I made and thechoices they envisioned for me. Subsequently, it has led me to be empathetic, yet stand for the choices I make.
Ashoka University values a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative culture which has a focus on learning from each other and ismindful of its community. In light of this, if you could communicate with your future roommate at university, what would you wantthem to know about you?
I have spent the last seven years of my life living in a dormitory with 15 other girls and I eagerly look forward to nally sharing thespace with only one individual! While I enjoy being around people, there are often times when I prefer solitude. I laugh a lot, mostly at myself and look forward to doing things we both enjoy together unless that involves developing a love for cats!
