Brief descriptions of existing scholarships are currently posted to the BBPA National Scholarship Fund’s website at www.bbpa.org . These descriptions are updated periodically. In 2013, 53 scholarships valued at approximately $200,000. were granted. The number of scholarships that will be available for 2014 will be finalized at a later date, but we anticipate that there will be more than 53. As you prepare your 2014 scholarship application, consider the following definitions:

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDE (2014-15)

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS

HERE ARE SOME USEFUL DEFINITIONS:Scholarship: Financial aid provided to a student in order to fund his/her academic studies. Unlike a loan, a scholarship does not require repayment. Scholarships are granted based on criteria outlined by the person or institution granting the award, includ-ing academic merit, financial need, extracurricular activities and other distinctions.

Non-Renewable Scholarship: This kind of scholarship is awarded for one year only. Most scholarships offered by the BBPA NSF are non-renewable.

Renewable Scholarships: A scholarship is called ‘renew-able’ if its duration spans more than one year. Each year, the recipient must meet the university/college’s criteria for academic progression in order to continue receiving the scholarship. The following BBPA NSF scholarships are renewable: The TD Finan-cial Group Scholarships, and The Dentons Canada LLP Scholar-ship.

WHO SHOULD APPLYTo be considered for a scholarship, you must be:1: a member of the Canadian Black community (i.e. a Black person of discernible African ancestry and self identity),2: a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada,3: a maximum 30 years of age at the start of the 2014-15 academic year,4: enrolled or accepted for enrolment as a full-time student in the academic year 2014-2015 at an accredited post-secondary institution, and5: must certify that all information provided on your application form and in all accompanying documents is true, accurate and complete to the best of your knowledge.

SELECTION CRITERIAThe decision to grant a scholarship is based on the following criteria: 1: high academic achievement, 2: financial need, 3: recognized contribution to the Black community, and 4: additional criteria that are established by the donor (e.g. subject being studied; attendance at a specific university; etc.)

Page 1

Page 9: APPLICATION DEADLINE: MAy 30, 2014 · 16 What is your level of study? check one. q Certificate or Diploma (less than 1 year) q Certificate or Diploma (1 year or more) q Associate

BASIC SELECTION PROCESS The basic process for evaluating applicants and awarding schol-arships is as follows:

STEP 1: Three Standard Selection Criteria: All appli-cants are evaluated by at least three judges based on the follow-ing three standard criteria: i) High Academic Achievement. This is based on your academic transcript, and by testimony to your scholarly excellence that is provided by a letter of recommendation by a teacher. ii) Financial Need: This is based on the financial information that is furnished in Section E of your Application, by information provided by your letters of recommendation, plus any reinforcing narrative you provide in your essay. iii) Recognized Contribution to the Black Community: This is based on information presented in Section F of your application, by information provided by your letters of recommendation, by your resume, plus any reinforcing narrative you provide in your essay. STEP 2: A Fourth Criterion Which is Donor Deter-mined: Step 2 applies the fourth selection criterion which is unique criteria determined by donors. These unique criteria may include (i) enrolment in a particular field of study, (ii) personal attributes and achievements such as leadership, (iii) special community service or volunteerism, (iv) overcoming certain life challenges, (v) residence in a specific geographic area, or (vi) other distinctions. Many donors do not specify unique criteria. Descriptions of scholarships in the BBPA NSF website provide guidance regarding donor determined unique criteria. Here are some examples of unique donor-driven selection criteria: - The TD Financial Group Scholarships require recipients to be enrolled in business and be available to intern at the bank during summers. - The Dr. Anderson Abbot Scholarship requires enrolment at the University of Toronto.- The Dentons Canada LLP Scholarship requires enrolment in law. - The 2 Tristan Thompson Scholarships require significant engagement in sports. Express this in Item 31 of your application, plus your essay and support letters. - The Lucille May Gopie Scholarship requires the recipient be from a home headed by a sole-support parent. Express this in Item 25 of your application, essay and support letters. - The Cadillac Excellence in Marketing and Communication requires the recipient to be enrolled in marketing or communication.- The Madeline Blackman Scholarship requires the recipient to have heritage links to Antigua and Barbuda. Express this in your essay and support letters. - Currently being finalized are new scholarships targeted at recipients who reside in facilities/areas operated by Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC). Express this in your essay and support letters.

STEP 3: Decision Making: Using information gathered in Steps 1 and 2, the judges, most of whom are current or former educators/administrators from post-secondary institutions, will determine which candidates should be assigned specific scholar-ships. Donors who request participation in the final decision for their particular scholarship are party to the decision.

STEP 4: Conditional Offers of Scholarships: candi-dates selected in Step 3 will be emailed conditional offers of scholarships (by August 27). They will be asked to provide ad-ditional information (e.g. validation of enrolment in the 2014-15 academic year, etc.) by a given deadline. Should they respond in a timely way with the requested information, the conditions will be removed and they will be awarded a scholarship.

STEP 5: Confirmation of 2014 Scholarship: With all conditions met, scholarship recipients will be officially advised by email of their award. As a courtesy, applicants who are un-successful in the 2014 scholarship program will be notified by email.

STEP 6: Scholarship Awards Ceremony: This ceremony is scheduled for the first week of October and will be located at York University, Toronto. All scholarship recipients and their families and friends will be invited. An applicant’s inability to at-tend the awards ceremony in person will not impact on his/her eligibility for a scholarship.

QUESTION 1: WILL I BE CONSIDERED FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS? The application form does not ask that you target your candidacy to a specific scholarship. This is because the judges will assess your application against scholarships with donor determined criteria. Where you fulfil specified donor criteria you will be evaluated for those scholarships plus you will be considered for all other scholarships which do not have specific donor criteria. Consider the following example. Should you be enrolled in the study of music, (i) you will be considered a candidate for The James Massey Music Scholarship, (ii) you will not be considered a candidate for scholarships requiring studies in law, business, science or other donor requirements you do not possess, and (iii) you will be considered for all other scholarships. In the end, all applicants will be considered for many scholarships.

QUESTION 2: WHO SHOULD I CONTACT FOR HELP WITH MY APPLICATION? To ensure you do your best work in preparing your application, we recommend that you consult all the resources available to you. If in high school, consult your parents, your guidance counsellor, a community mentor and/or any teacher who has been particularly supportive of your development. The same may be said if you are currently in a college/university, but additionally, you may consult staff in your institution’s financial aid and awards office or a person familiar with you school work or employment record.

SECTION A – YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATIONGeneral: Write your surname and given name at the top of each page starting at Page 2. Item 8: Current Citizenship Status: Scholarships will only be awarded to applicants who are citizens of Canada or permanent residents of Canada. - A Canadian citizen is a person who possesses Canadian citizenship by birth or through the naturalization process under the Canadian Citizenship Act. - A permanent resident is someone who has been given perma-nent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a

Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other coun-tries. A person in Canada temporarily, like a student or foreign worker, is not a permanent resident. Item 9: Email Address: Since communication with you will be primarily by email, you must provide an active and frequently-monitored-by-you email address. You must be the owner of the email account. We will not accept the email address of a third party as the means for communicating with you. Item 10: Permanent Canadian Address: Your permanent address is where you permanently reside and the reliable default address for postal contact with you, even if you are temporarily living elsewhere (for purposes of attending school, etc.). This must be a Canada-based address. Item 11: Mailing Address: Your mailing address and your permanent address may be the same. However, it is possible they could be different, with your mailing address being a temporary address to which hardcopy mail may be delivered to you. This mailing address could be your student residence or an off-campus apartment or a temporary out-of-country address.

SECTION C: INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE PROGRAMItem 14: Name and Address of Your University/Col-lege: This refers to the university or college you will be attending in the academic year 2014-15. Give the address of the particular campus of the university or college you will be attending. Item 15: Name of Your University or College Program: Give the full official title of the program you will be enrolled in during the academic year 2014-15 and include your subject of major interest. Refer to the institution’s official documents for official program titles. For example:- Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), majoring in Accounting- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), majoring in Biochemistry We should be able to find your program in your school’s website and all your documentation should be consistent with this program. In stating your ‘subject of major interest’, consider the following: A subject of major interest is essentially a “major” or a specialization within a more general degree program. For example, a university may offer a Bachelor of Arts degree program. Within this program you may specialize in a number of areas such as Economics, Political Science, English, French, Sociology, History or Drama. Item 16: Your Level of Study: Consider the following definitions when completing this section: Certificate or Diploma: These are non-degree programs offered primarily by colleges, and some universities, and normally span one to three years. These programs generally lead to employment in an occupational field. Associate Degree- The designation granted upon completion of an educational program of at least 2 but less than 4 years of college work. Bachelor’s Degree: The degree customarily granted upon com-pletion of a program of study normally requiring three, four, or five academic years of university (or combined college/univer-sity) work. The bachelor of arts (BA) and bachelor of science (BS or B.Sc.) are the most common bachelor’s degree. Master’s Degree: This is customarily the first graduate degree in the liberal arts and sciences and usually takes one to two aca-demic years of study beyond the bachelor’s degree to complete.

The master’s of arts (MA) and master’s of science (MS or M.Sc.) are the most common master’s degrees. First Professional Degree: The first professional degree signifying completion of the minimum academic requirements for the practise of a profession. Programs in this category are: - Chiropractic (DC) - Dentistry (DDS or DMD) - Law, General (LLB or JD) - Medicine (MD) - Optometry (OD) - Osteopathic Medicine (DO) - Pharmacy (Bpharm, PharmD) - Podiatry or podiatric medicine (Pod.D., DP., or DPM) - Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

Item 19: Student Category or Time Status: When enrolled, your college or university will assign you to a specific time status or student category. This status could be (i) full-time student in which case you pay corresponding full-time fees, (ii) part-time status in which case you pay part-time fees, or (iii) other. To receive a BBPA NSF scholarship you must be enrolled as a full-time student. However, should you be enrolled in a graduate program (master’s or doctorate) your status may be other than full-time and we are prepared to consider variations in your time status (e.g. half-time/thesis program). Please note this at Item 19 on your application form.

SECTION D: INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CAREER/OCCUPATIONAL OBJECTIVESItem 20: Career or occupational objectives: Use this section to explain your career or occupational objectives. If your current program of study does not readily match your stated career objective, clarify this. For example, if you plan on attending a post-graduate program to pursue your stated career, you may use your essay to further expand on your rationale for this career trajectory.

SECTION E: DECLARATION OF YOUR INCOME AND EXPENSESGeneral: This section explores information that enables our judges to assess your level of financial need. If you have applied for government financial assistance such as the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) in Ontario, it is a good idea to make sure that the information you present in your scholarship information aligns with information in your government-assistance application. As well, you may further your case for financial support in your essay and also have aspects of your financial status confirmed by your recommendation letters. Consider the following definitions: Parent: Parent(s) refers to your birth or adoptive parent(s), step-parent(s), legal guardian(s), or official sponsor(s). Dependent Minor Child: This refers to a child under the age of majority, which varies in each province (age 18 in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta). Dependent Child: This refers to a child who is (i) under the age of 22 and not married or in a common-law relationship, or (ii) is 22 years of age or older and, since before the age of 22, has been continuously enrolled and in attendance as a full-time student in an accredited post-secondary institution; and substantially dependent on the financial support of a parent. SECTION F: INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Item 30: Community Engagement: Community engage-ment, particularly contribution to the development and well-being of the Black community, is a criterion that supports our belief that scholarship selection is ‘more than good grades’. Applicants may showcase their contribution to the community in their response to Item 30, and Item 34 (the Essay). In Item 30, list the three most significant situations in which you contributed to the Black com-munity and to the wider Canadian community. Did you initiate a project that benefited the community? Did you have a leadership role or other pivotal role within an organization or group in the community? Have you given your knowledge, skills and talents to any community endeavour that is given to improving the lives of others or benefitting the community? Have you had a signifi-cant volunteer or paid experience with a community organization? Tell us about it by listing the organization, and by describing the role/activity you undertook. Item 31: Extracurricular Activities: Some scholarships place a high priority on extracurricular activities which essentially are about activities that are “outside the realm of the normal activities of the school/college/university curriculum”. List the three most important extracurricular activities you participated in and depict the level of your participation such as the recreational, intramural or national level. If in college or university, do you play for the varsity team? Tell us since the Tristan Thompson Schol-arships consider participation in sports an important selection criterion. Were you involved in your school’s orchestra, drama club, debating club? Did you establish or lead a club or initiate an extracurricular activity that benefited your fellow students? We want to know.

SECTION G: ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS TO SUPPORT YOUR APPLICATIONItems 32 & 33: General Comment on Letters of Recommendation: Please submit ONE letter from a member of the community and ONE letter from a teacher. Ideally, they should be written on official letterhead. Do not submit more than the two letters that are required. Those writing letters on your behalf should know you well, and be able to describe your achievements, character, challenges encountered, commitment to your community and your special personal attributes. These letters can be very persuasive in convincing judges of your eligibility for a scholarship. Therefore, it is best to ask persons who are willing to make the effort to write an impactful letter. Letters should be addressed to The Selection Committee, BBPA

National Scholarship Fund, 675 King Street West, Suite 210, Toronto, Ontario, M5V 1M9, and should be included by you in your application package. Item 32: Letter of Recommendation from a Member of the Community: This letter should be written (on official letterhead if possible) by someone outside your school but within your community. This person may be an employer, coordinator of volunteer community services, someone from the faith commu-nity, a member of the Black community or a leader of an organi-zation to which you belong. Ideally, this person should know you well enough to write of your record of community service, your family situation, challenges you have faced and to make your case for a scholarship. Item 33: Letter of Recommendation from Teacher: This letter should be written on official letterhead by a high school teacher, guidance counsellor, principal or vice-principal who knows you well and can speak to your scholarly excellence and other outstanding attributes. It may also be written by a college/university professor or head of an academic department. If you are currently in college/ university and prefer having your letter from your former high school, this is acceptable. If you recently changed high school and prefer a letter from your former high school, this is acceptable. If you are unable to get a letter from your school, then you may replace the letter with a second letter from someone from the community. This letter should forcefully support your case for a scholarship. Item 34: Essay of Approximately 500 Words: This essay gives you an opportunity to make a powerful case for a BBPA NSF scholarship. Think carefully about the scholarship selection criteria and develop a strategy for focusing your arguments on the factors that matter. Do you wish to be a candidate for a scholarship with unique donor criteria such as family history, sports, subject of study, community service and so on that you were unable to highlight in the rest of the application form? Now is the time to focus on these. Are you experiencing incredible financial hardships that need to be highlighted? Should scholarship judges be aware of special aspects of your family’s history? Do you want to emphasize your community-service and student leadership records and the awards you have been given? Have you excelled in your academics and have been recognized by your school, or other agencies? If you were involved in a project did you initiate it, did you lead it or was your role that of a participant? The essay provides you with a platform to persuade the judges to the merits of your application. Make a point of discussing how you plan to ‘give back’ to the Black community if you are granted a BBPA NSF scholarship. Trustees of The National Scholarship Fund want to see more ‘scholarship alumni’ engaged in committed and sustained service to the Black community. How will you contribute your knowledge, skills and talents to developing the community? We require that the essay be typed and that it be your creation. At the top of each page of your essay, note your surname and given name. Item 35: Academic Transcript. If you are in high school/CEGEP, then provide your academic transcript from this school. If currently attending college/university, provide an academic transcript that goes up to your most recent study term/semester. Some schools will stamp the transcript with the term Issued to Student and give it to you. We will accept this. In your package,

we require the original copy of the transcript plus three photo-copies.(In adding three photocopies of your original transcript, ensure that you also include photocopies of the section of the transcript that explains the grading and grade point systems. This may be the back of the transcript and/or a separate document.) Some schools insist on mailing an official transcript to the per-son or organization that you designate, and this could result in the document being received after the May 30 deadline. Should this apply to you, submit the rest of your application before the May 30 deadline, and indicate your school will later send your transcript directly. It is your responsibility to follow up with your school to ensure it mails the transcript. While we prefer that you submit a ‘complete application package’ by the deadline, we are willing to accept your academic transcript arriving a few days af-ter receipt of your application or shortly after the May 30 applica-tion deadline.Item 36: Your Resume: Your resume is an account of your personal, educational and professional history and experience. It is what you would submit with a job application. Please include it with your application. Item 37: Two Copies of Your Photograph (Portrait): Your photograph must be high-resolution and high-quality. It should be, or be similar to your graduation portrait. It must have a clear background and it should not be a ‘selfie’.

SECTION H – CHECKLISTGeneral: The checklist is noted on Page 6 of the application form. Be guided by it in ensuring your application is complete. We require FOUR COPIES (i.e. 4 complete sets) of your application form and related documents.
